The absolutely Koszul property of Veronese subrings and Segre products

Absolutely Koszul algebras are a class of rings over which any finite graded module has a rational Poincaré series. We provide a criterion to detect non-absolutely Koszul rings. Combining the criterion with machine computations, we identify large families of Veronese subrings and Segre products of polynomial rings which are not absolutely Koszul. In particular, we classify completely the absolutely Koszul algebras among Segre products of polynomial rings, at least in characteristic $0$.

Betti splittings for powers of sums of ideals

Let $A$ and $B$ be standard graded polynomial rings over a field $k$ and $I$ and $J$ be non-zero, proper homogeneous ideals contained in $A$ and $B$, respectively. Denote by $P$ the sum of $I$ and $J$ in $R=A\otimes_k B$. Under reasonable conditions on $k, I$ and $J$, we provide exact formulas and describe the asymptotic behavior of the depth and the regularity of the powers of $P$ in terms of the data of $I$ and $J$. Thereby, we strengthen previous work of H.T. Hà, N.V. Trung and T.N. Trung. Our main technical result says that, under the aforementioned conditions, for all $s\ge 0$ and all $n\ge 1$, the simple decomposition $I^sP^n=I^{s+1}P^{n-1}+I^sJ^n$ yields a Betti splitting for $I^sP^n$. A decomposition of an ideal $L$ as a sum of two subideals is called a Betti splitting if the minimal free resolution of $L$ is completely determined by those of the summands and their intersection.

On the asymptotic behavior of the linearity defect

This work concerns the linearity defect of a module $M$ over a noetherian local ring $R$, introduced by Herzog and Iyengar in 2005, and denoted by $\text{ld}_R M$. Roughly speaking, $\text{ld}_R M$ is the homological degree beyond which the minimal free resolution of $M$ is linear. In the paper, it is proved that for any ideal $I$ in a regular local ring $R$ and for any finitely generated $R$-module $M$, each of the sequences $(\text{ld}_R (I^nM))_n$ and $(\text{ld}_R (M/I^nM))_n$ is eventually constant. The first statement follows from a more general result about the eventual constancy of the sequence $(\text{ld}_R C_n)_n$ where $C$ is a finitely generated graded module over a standard graded algebra over $R$. The second statement follows from the first together with a result of Avramov on small homomorphisms.

Notes on the linearity defect and applications

The linearity defect, introduced by Herzog and Iyengar, is a numerical measure for the complexity of minimal free resolutions. Employing a characterization of the linearity defect due to Şega, we study the behavior of linearity defect along short exact sequences. We point out two classes of short exact sequences involving Koszul modules, along which linearity defect behaves nicely. We also generalize the notion of Koszul filtrations from the graded case to the local setting. Among the applications, we prove that if $R\to S$ is a surjection of noetherian local rings such that $S$ is a Koszul $R$-module, and $N$ is a finitely generated $S$-module, then the linearity defect of $N$ as an $R$-module is the same as its linearity defect as an $S$-module. In particular, we confirm that specializations of absolutely Koszul algebras are again absolutely Koszul, answering positively a question due to Conca, Iyengar, Nguyen and Römer.

Linearity defect of edge ideals and Fröberg's theorem

Fröberg's classical theorem about edge ideals with $2$-linear resolution can be regarded as a classification of graphs whose edge ideals have linearity defect zero. Extending his theorem, we classify all graphs whose edge ideals have linearity defect at most $1$. Our characterization is independent of the characteristic of the base field: the graphs in question are exactly weakly chordal graphs with induced matching number at most $2$. The proof uses the theory of Betti splittings of monomial ideals due to Francisco, Hà, and Van Tuyl and the structure of weakly chordal graphs. Along the way, we compute the linearity defect of edge ideals of cycles and weakly chordal graphs. We are also able to recover and generalize previous results due to Dochtermann-Engström, Kimura, and Woodroofe on the projective dimension and Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of edge ideals.

Regularity bounds for complexes and their homology

Let $R$ be a standard graded algebra over a field $k$. We prove an Auslander-Buchsbaum formula for the absolute Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity, extending important cases of previous works of Chardin and Römer. For a bounded complex of finitely generated graded $R$-modules $L$, we prove the equality $\text{reg}~ L=\max_{i\in \mathbb Z} \{\text{reg}~ H_i(L)-i\}$ given the condition $\text{depth}~ H_i(L)\ge \dim H_{i+1}(L)-1$ for all $i<\sup L$. As applications, we recover previous bounds on regularity of Tor due to Caviglia, Eisenbud-Huneke-Ulrich, among others. We also obtain strengthened results on regularity bounds for Ext and for the quotient by a linear form of a module.

Regularity over homomorphisms and a Frobenius characterization of Koszul algebras

Let $R$ be a standard graded algebra over an $F$-finite field of characteristic $p > 0$. Let $ϕ:R\to R$ be the Frobenius endomorphism. For each finitely generated graded $R$-module $M$, let ${}^ϕ\!M$ be the abelian group $M$ with the $R$-module structure induced by the Frobenius endomorphism. The $R$-module ${}^ϕ\!M$ has a natural grading given by $\text{deg} x=j$ if $x\in M_{jp+i}$ for some $0\le i \le p-1$. In this paper, we prove that $R$ is Koszul if and only if there exists a non-zero finitely generated graded $R$-module $M$ such that $\text{reg}_R\,{}^ϕ\!M <\infty$. This result supplies another instance for the ability of the Frobenius in detecting homological properties, as exemplified by Kunz's famous regularity criterion. The main technical tool is the notion of Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity over certain homomorphisms between $\mathbb{N}$-graded algebras. The latter notion is a common generalization of the relative and absolute Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of modules.

Absolutely Koszul algebras and the Backelin-Roos property

We study absolutely Koszul algebras, Koszul algebras with the Backelin-Roos property and their behavior under standard algebraic operations. In particular, we identify some Veronese subrings of polynomial rings that have the Backelin-Roos property and conjecture that the list is indeed complete. Among other things, we prove that every universally Koszul ring defined by monomials has the Backelin-Roos property.

Koszul determinantal rings and $2\times e$ matrices of linear forms

Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $0$. Let $X$ be a $2\times e$ matrix of linear forms over a polynomial ring $k[\mathsf{x}_1, \ldots,\mathsf{x}_n]$ (where $e,n\ge 1$). We prove that the determinantal ring $R = k[\mathsf{x}_1,\ldots,\mathsf{x}_n]/I_2(X)$ is Koszul if and only if in the Kronecker-Weierstrass normal form of $X$, the largest length of a nilpotent block is at most twice the smallest length of a scroll block. As an application, we classify rational normal scrolls whose all section rings by natural coordinates are Koszul. This result settles a conjecture due to Conca.

Algebra retracts and Stanley-Reisner rings

In a paper from 2002, Bruns and Gubeladze conjectured that graded algebra retracts of polytopal algebras over a field $k$ are again polytopal algebras. Motivated by this conjecture, we prove that graded algebra retracts of Stanley-Reisner rings over a field $k$ are again Stanley-Reisner rings. Extending this result further, we give partial evidence for a conjecture saying that monomial quotients of standard graded polynomial rings over $k$ descend along graded algebra retracts.
