Source-Channel Secrecy for Shannon Cipher System

Recently, a secrecy measure based on list-reconstruction has been proposed [2], in which a wiretapper is allowed to produce a list of $2^{mR_{L}}$ reconstruction sequences and the secrecy is measured by the minimum distortion over the entire list. In this paper, we show that this list secrecy problem is equivalent to the one with secrecy measured by a new quantity \emph{lossy-equivocation}, which is proven to be the minimum optimistic 1-achievable source coding rate (the minimum coding rate needed to reconstruct the source within target distortion with positive probability for \emph{infinitely many blocklengths}) of the source with the wiretapped signal as two-sided information, and also can be seen as a lossy extension of conventional equivocation. Upon this (or list) secrecy measure, we study source-channel secrecy problem in the discrete memoryless Shannon cipher system with \emph{noisy} wiretap channel. Two inner bounds and an outer bound on the achievable region of secret key rate, list rate, wiretapper distortion, and distortion of legitimate user are given. The inner bounds are derived by using uncoded scheme and (operationally) separate scheme, respectively. Thanks to the equivalence between lossy-equivocation secrecy and list secrecy, information spectrum method is leveraged to prove the outer bound. As special cases, the admissible region for the case of degraded wiretap channel or lossless communication for legitimate user has been characterized completely. For both these two cases, separate scheme is proven to be optimal. Interestingly, however, separation indeed suffers performance loss for other certain cases. Besides, we also extend our results to characterize the achievable region for Gaussian communication case. As a side product optimistic lossy source coding has also been addressed.

Pseudo Sequence based 2-D hierarchical reference structure for Light-Field Image Compression

In this paper, we present a novel pseudo sequence based 2-D hierarchical reference structure for light-field image compression. In the proposed scheme, we first decompose the light-field image into multiple views and organize them into a 2-D coding structure according to the spatial coordinates of the corresponding microlens. Then we mainly develop three technologies to optimize the 2-D coding structure. First, we divide all the views into four quadrants, and all the views are encoded one quadrant after another to reduce the reference buffer size as much as possible. Inside each quadrant, all the views are encoded hierarchically to fully exploit the correlations between different views. Second, we propose to use the distance between the current view and its reference views as the criteria for selecting better reference frames for each inter view. Third, we propose to use the spatial relative positions between different views to achieve more accurate motion vector scaling. The whole scheme is implemented in the reference software of High Efficiency Video Coding. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed novel pseudo-sequence based 2-D hierarchical structure can achieve maximum 14.2% bit-rate savings compared with the state-of-the-art light-field image compression method.

Distortion Bounds for Transmitting Correlated Sources with Common Part over MAC

This paper investigates the joint source-channel coding problem of sending two correlated memoryless sources with common part over a memoryless multiple access channel (MAC). An inner bound and two outer bounds on the achievable distortion region are derived. In particular, they respectively recover the existing bounds for several special cases, such as communication without common part, lossless communication, and noiseless communication. When specialized to quadratic Gaussian communication case, transmitting Gaussian sources with Gaussian common part over Gaussian MAC, the inner bound and outer bound are used to generate two new bounds. Numerical result shows that common part improves the distortion of such distributed source-channel coding problem.

Video Captioning with Transferred Semantic Attributes

Automatically generating natural language descriptions of videos plays a fundamental challenge for computer vision community. Most recent progress in this problem has been achieved through employing 2-D and/or 3-D Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) to encode video content and Recurrent Neural Networks (RNN) to decode a sentence. In this paper, we present Long Short-Term Memory with Transferred Semantic Attributes (LSTM-TSA)---a novel deep architecture that incorporates the transferred semantic attributes learnt from images and videos into the CNN plus RNN framework, by training them in an end-to-end manner. The design of LSTM-TSA is highly inspired by the facts that 1) semantic attributes play a significant contribution to captioning, and 2) images and videos carry complementary semantics and thus can reinforce each other for captioning. To boost video captioning, we propose a novel transfer unit to model the mutually correlated attributes learnt from images and videos. Extensive experiments are conducted on three public datasets, i.e., MSVD, M-VAD and MPII-MD. Our proposed LSTM-TSA achieves to-date the best published performance in sentence generation on MSVD: 52.8% and 74.0% in terms of BLEU@4 and CIDEr-D. Superior results when compared to state-of-the-art methods are also reported on M-VAD and MPII-MD.

Comments on "Approximate Characterizations for the Gaussian Source Broadcast Distortion Region"

Recently, Tian et al. [1] considered joint source-channel coding of transmitting a Gaussian source over $K$-user Gaussian broadcast channel, and derived an outer bound on the admissible distortion region. In [1], they stated "due to its nonlinear form, it appears difficult to determine whether it is always looser than the trivial outer bound in all distortion regimes with bandwidth compression". However, in this correspondence we solve this problem and prove that for the bandwidth expansion case ($K\geq2$), this outer bound is strictly tighter than the trivial outer bound with each user being optimal in the point-to-point setting; while for the bandwidth compression or bandwidth match case, this outer bound actually degenerates to the trivial outer bound. Therefore, our results imply that on one hand, the outer bound given in [1] is nontrivial only for Gaussian broadcast communication ($K\geq2$) with bandwidth expansion; on the other hand, unfortunately, no nontrivial outer bound exists so far for Gaussian broadcast communication ($K\geq2$) with bandwidth compression.

Comparative Deep Learning of Hybrid Representations for Image Recommendations

In many image-related tasks, learning expressive and discriminative representations of images is essential, and deep learning has been studied for automating the learning of such representations. Some user-centric tasks, such as image recommendations, call for effective representations of not only images but also preferences and intents of users over images. Such representations are termed \emph{hybrid} and addressed via a deep learning approach in this paper. We design a dual-net deep network, in which the two sub-networks map input images and preferences of users into a same latent semantic space, and then the distances between images and users in the latent space are calculated to make decisions. We further propose a comparative deep learning (CDL) method to train the deep network, using a pair of images compared against one user to learn the pattern of their relative distances. The CDL embraces much more training data than naive deep learning, and thus achieves superior performance than the latter, with no cost of increasing network complexity. Experimental results with real-world data sets for image recommendations have shown the proposed dual-net network and CDL greatly outperform other state-of-the-art image recommendation solutions.

Jointly Modeling Embedding and Translation to Bridge Video and Language

Automatically describing video content with natural language is a fundamental challenge of multimedia. Recurrent Neural Networks (RNN), which models sequence dynamics, has attracted increasing attention on visual interpretation. However, most existing approaches generate a word locally with given previous words and the visual content, while the relationship between sentence semantics and visual content is not holistically exploited. As a result, the generated sentences may be contextually correct but the semantics (e.g., subjects, verbs or objects) are not true. This paper presents a novel unified framework, named Long Short-Term Memory with visual-semantic Embedding (LSTM-E), which can simultaneously explore the learning of LSTM and visual-semantic embedding. The former aims to locally maximize the probability of generating the next word given previous words and visual content, while the latter is to create a visual-semantic embedding space for enforcing the relationship between the semantics of the entire sentence and visual content. Our proposed LSTM-E consists of three components: a 2-D and/or 3-D deep convolutional neural networks for learning powerful video representation, a deep RNN for generating sentences, and a joint embedding model for exploring the relationships between visual content and sentence semantics. The experiments on YouTube2Text dataset show that our proposed LSTM-E achieves to-date the best reported performance in generating natural sentences: 45.3% and 31.0% in terms of BLEU@4 and METEOR, respectively. We also demonstrate that LSTM-E is superior in predicting Subject-Verb-Object (SVO) triplets to several state-of-the-art techniques.

Secrecy Communication with Security Rate Measure

We introduce a new measure on secrecy, which is established based on rate-distortion theory. It is named \emph{security rate}, which is the minimum (infimum) of the additional rate needed to reconstruct the source within target distortion level with any positive probability for wiretapper. It denotes the minimum distance in information metric (bits) from what wiretapper has received to any decrypted reconstruction (where decryption is defined as reconstruction within target distortion level with some positive possibility). By source coding theorem, it is equivalent to a distortion-based equivocation $\mathop{\min}\limits _{p\left(v^{n}|s^{n},m\right):Ed\left(S^{n},V^{n}\right)\le D_{E}}\frac{1}{n}I\left(S^{n};V^{n}|M\right)$ which can be seen as a direct extension of equivocation $\frac{1}{n}H\left(S^{n}|M\right)$ to lossy decryption case, given distortion level $D_{E}$ and the received (encrypted) message $M$ of wiretapper. In this paper, we study it in Shannon cipher system with lossless communication, where a source is transmitted from sender to legitimate receiver secretly and losslessly, and also eavesdropped by a wiretapper. We characterize the admissible region of secret key rate, coding rate of the source, wiretapper distortion, and security rate (distortion-based equivocation). Since the security rate equals the distortion-based equivocation, and the equivocation is a special case of the distortion-based equivocation (with Hamming distortion measure and $D_{E}=0$), this gives an answer for the meaning of the maximum equivocation.
