Magnetic Properties and Spin-orbit Coupling induced Semiconductivity in LK-99

Recent reports of a possible room-temperature superconductor called LK-99 have generated a lot of attention worldwide. In just a few days, a large amount of experimental works attempted to reproduce this sample and verify its properties. At the same time a large amount of theoretical works have also been reported. However, many experiments have drawn different conclusions, and many theoretical results are not consistent with experimental results. For one of the structures of LK-99 with the chemical formula as Pb9Cu(PO4)6O, many first-principles calculations did not consider spin-orbit coupling and concluded that it is a flat band metal. However, spin-orbit coupling is often not negligible in systems with heavy elements, and LK-99 contains a large amount of heavy element Pb. We performed calculations of electronic structure of Pb9Cu(PO4)6O with spin-orbit coupling, and the results show that it's not a metal but a semiconductor. This is consistent with many experimental results. In the ferromagnetic state Pb9Cu(PO4)6O is an indirect-bandgap semiconductor with a bandgap of 292 meV. Moreover, its conduction band is a flat band. At an electron doping level of 0.5 e/unit cell, Pb9Cu(PO4)6O becomes metallic and has a flat band with a width of only 25 meV at the Fermi level in the ferromagnetic state. While in the antiferromagnetic-A state, Pb9Cu(PO4)6O is a direct-bandgap semiconductor with a bandgap of 300 meV. As a magnetic narrowband semiconductor, Pb9Cu(PO4)6O may have potential application value in the field of optoelectronic device, photocatalytic, photodetector and spintronics device.

The Influence of Dimensionality on the Charge Density Wave Transition and Its Application on Mid-infrared Photodetection

Two-dimensional charge density wave (CDW) materials received much attention for high responsivity and broadband photodetection in recent years, due to their collective electron transport and narrow bandgap. However, the high dark current density problem hinders their real application. Here we report a sharp CDW transition in quasi-1D (TaSe4)2I, and apply it for broadband photodetection. Especially at mid-infrared region, the device shows both high photo responsivity of 1.18e3 A/W and large light on-off ratio of 80, which is superior than 2D CDW TaS2 and most reported low-dimensional materials. The fact for such high performance lies on two aspects. One is the much lower dark current density resulted from the pseudo gap associated with 1D Luttinger liquid state, which is supported by finite size scaling of nonlinear I-V at variable temperatures and occurrence of 1D structural phase transition consolidated by In-situ Raman spectroscopy. The other is the high photocurrent associated with the Frohlich superconductivity state, manifested by an ultrasensitive switching, which can be only accessible in 1D CDW materials, in agreement with our density functional theory calculation. Our work thus reveals the pivotal role of dimensionality in CDW phase transition, and paves a way for implementing highly sensitive broadband photodetector.

Direct observation of topological surface state in the topological superconductor 2M-WS2

The quantum spin Hall (QSH) effect has attracted extensive research interest because of the potential applications in spintronics and quantum computing, which is attributable to two conducting edge channels with opposite spin polarization and the quantized electronic conductance of 2e2/h. Recently, 2M-WS2, a new stable phase of transition metal dichalcogenides with a 2M structure showing an identical layer configuration to that of the monolayer 1T' TMDs, was suggested to be a QSH insulator as well as a superconductor with critical transition temperature around 8 K. Here, high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and spin-resolved ARPES are applied to investigate the electronic and spin structure of the topological surface states (TSS) in the superconducting 2M-WS2. The TSS exhibits characteristic spin-momentum-locking behavior, suggesting the existence of long-sought nontrivial Z2 topological states therein. We expect that 2M-WS2 with co-existing superconductivity and TSS might host the promising Majorana bound states.

Observation of spin splitting torque in a collinear antiferromagnet RuO2

Current-induced spin torques provide efficient data writing approaches for magnetic memories. Recently, the spin splitting torque (SST) was theoretically predicted (R. González-Hernández et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 126, 127701 (2021)), which combines advantages of conventional spin transfer torque (STT) and spin-orbit torque (SOT) as well as enables controllable spin polarization. Here we provide the experimental evidence of SST in collinear antiferromagnet RuO2 films. The spin current direction is found to be correlated to the crystal orientation of RuO2 and the spin polarization direction is dependent on (parallel to) the Néel vector. These features are quite characteristic for the predicted SST. Our finding not only present a new member for the spin torques besides traditional STT and SOT, but also proposes a promising spin source RuO2 for spintronics.

Controllable anomalous Nernst effect in an antiperovskite antiferromagnet

Anomalous Nernst effect (ANE), the generation of a transverse electric voltage by a longitudinal temperature gradient, has attracted increasing interests of researchers recently, due to its potential in the thermoelectric power conversion and close relevance to the Berry curvature of the band structure. Avoiding the stray field of ferromagnets, ANE in antiferromagnets (AFM) has the advantage of realizing highly efficient and densely integrated thermopiles. Here, we report the observation of ANE in an antiperovskite noncollinear AFM Mn3SnN experimentally, which is triggered by the enhanced Berry curvature from Weyl points located close to the Fermi level. Considering that antiperovskite Mn3SnN has rich magnetic phase transition, we modulate the noncollinear AFM configurations by the biaxial strain, which enables us to control its ANE. Our findings provide a potential class of materials to explore the Weyl physics of noncollinear AFM as well as realizing antiferromagnetic spin caloritronics that exhibits promising prospects for energy conversion and information processing.

Interface-enhanced ferromagnetism with long-distance effect in van der Waals semiconductor

Ferromagnetic semiconductors discovered in two-dimensional (2D) materials open an avenue for highly integrated and multifunctional spintronics. The Curie temperature (TC) of existed 2D ferromagnetic semiconductors is extremely low and the modulation effect of their magnetism is limited compared with their 2D metallic counterparts. The interfacial effect was found to effectively manipulate the three-dimensional magnetism, providing a unique opportunity for tailoring the 2D magnetism. Here we demonstrate that the TC of 2D ferromagnetic semiconductor Cr2Ge2Te6 can be enhanced by 130% (from ~65 K to above 150 K) when adjacent to a tungsten layer. The interfacial W-Te bonding contributes to the TC enhancement with a strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA), guaranteeing an efficient magnetization switching by the spin-orbit torque with a low current density at 150 K. Distinct from the rapid attenuation in conventional magnets, the interfacial effect exhibits a weak dependence on Cr2Ge2Te6 thickness and a long-distance effect (more than 10 nanometers) due to the weak interlayer coupling inherent to 2D magnets. Our work not only reveals a unique interfacial behavior in 2D materials, but also advances the process towards practical 2D spintronics.

Cluster magnetic octupole induced out-of-plane spin polarization in antiperovskite antiferromagnet

Out-of-plane spin polarization σ_z has attracted increasing interests of researchers recently, due to its potential in high-density and low-power spintronic devices. Noncollinear antiferromagnet (AFM), which has unique 120° triangular spin configuration, has been discovered to possess σ_z. However, the physical origin of σ_z in noncollinear AFM is still not clear, and the external magnetic field-free switching of perpendicular magnetic layer using the corresponding σ_z has not been reported yet. Here, we use the cluster magnetic octupole in antiperovskite AFM Mn3SnN to demonstrate the generation of σ_z. σ_z is induced by the precession of carrier spins when currents flow through the cluster magnetic octupole, which also relies on the direction of the cluster magnetic octupole in conjunction with the applied current. With the aid of σ_z, current induced spin-orbit torque (SOT) switching of adjacent perpendicular ferromagnet is realized without external magnetic field. Our findings present a new perspective to the generation of out-of-plane spin polarizations via noncollinear AFM spin structure, and provide a potential path to realize ultrafast high-density applications.

Magnon-mediated interlayer coupling in an all-antiferromagnetic junction

The interlayer coupling mediated by fermions in ferromagnets brings about parallel and anti-parallel magnetization orientations of two magnetic layers, resulting in the giant magnetoresistance, which forms the foundation in spintronics and accelerates the development of information technology. However, the interlayer coupling mediated by another kind of quasi-particle, boson, is still lacking. Here we demonstrate such a static interlayer coupling at room temperature in an antiferromagnetic junction Fe2O3/Cr2O3/Fe2O3, where the two antiferromagnetic Fe2O3 layers are functional materials and the antiferromagnetic Cr2O3 layer serves as a spacer. The Néel vectors in the top and bottom Fe2O3 are strongly orthogonally coupled, which is bridged by a typical bosonic excitation (magnon) in the Cr2O3 spacer. Such an orthogonally coupling exceeds the category of traditional collinear interlayer coupling via fermions in ground state, reflecting the fluctuating nature of the magnons, as supported by our magnon quantum well model. Besides the fundamental significance on the quasi-particle-mediated interaction, the strong coupling in an antiferromagnetic magnon junction makes it a realistic candidate for practical antiferromagnetic spintronics and magnonics with ultrahigh-density integration.

Enhanced anisotropic superconductivity in the topological nodal-line semimetal InxTaS2

Coexistence of topological bands and charge density wave (CDW) in topological materials has attracted immense attentions because of their fantastic properties, such as axionic-CDW, three-dimensional quantum Hall effect, etc. In this work, a nodal-line semimetal InxTaS2 characterized by CDW and superconductivity is successfully synthesized, whose structure and topological bands (two separated Wely rings) are similar to In0.58TaSe2. A 2 x 2 commensurate CDW is observed at low temperature in InxTaS2, identified by transport properties and STM measurements. Moreover, superconductivity emerges below 0.69 K, and the anisotropy ratio of upper critical field [Gamma = H||ab c2(0)=H||c c2(0)] is significantly enhanced compared to 2H-TaS2, which shares the same essential layer unit. According to the Lawrence-Doniach model, the enhanced Gamma may be explained by the reduced effective mass in kx-ky plane, where Weyl rings locate. Therefore, this type of layered topological systems may offer a platform to investigate highly anisotropic superconductivity and to understand the extremely large upper critical field in the bulk or in the two-dimensional limit.

Nonvolatile ferroelectric control of topological states in 2D heterostructures

Quantum spin Hall (QSH) insulator materials feature topologically protected edge states that can drastically reduce dissipation and are useful for the next-generation electronics. However, the nonvolatile control of topological edge state is still a challenge. In this paper, based on first-principles calculations, the switchable topological states are found in the van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures consisting of two dimensional (2D) Bi(111) bilayer (BL) and α-In2Se3 by reversing the electric polarization of the ferroelectric α-In2Se3. The topological switching results from the different charge transfer associated with the two opposite polarization states of α-In2Se3. This new topological switching mechanism has the unique advantages of being fully electrical as well as nonvolatile. Our finding provides an unprecedented approach to realize ferroelectric control of topological states in 2D materials, which will have great potential for applications in topological nanoscale electronics.

Current-induced magnetization switching in CoTb amorphous single layer

We demonstrate spin-orbit torque (SOT) switching of amorphous CoTb single layer films with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA). The switching sustains even the film thickness is above 10 nm, where the critical switching current density keeps almost constant. Without the need of overcoming the strong interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction caused by the heavy metal, a quite low assistant field of ~20 Oe is sufficient to realize the fully switching. The SOT effective field decreases and undergoes a sign change with the decrease of the Tb-concentration, implying that a combination of the spin Hall effect from both Co and Tb as well as an asymmetric spin current absorption accounts for the SOT switching mechanism. Our findings would advance the use of magnetic materials with bulk PMA for energy-efficient and thermal-stable non-volatile memories, and add a different dimension for understanding the ordering and asymmetry in amorphous thin films.

Anisotropic gapping of topological Weyl rings in the charge-density-wave superconductor InxTaSe2

Topological materials and topological phases have recently become a hot topic in condensed matter physics. In this work, we report a topological nodal-line semimetal InxTaSe2, in the presence of both charge density wave (CDW) and superconductivity. In the x = 0.58 samples, the 2 * /3 commensurate CDW (CCDW) and the 2 * 2 CCDW are observed below 116 K and 77 K, respectively. Consistent with theoretical calculations, the spin-orbital coupling gives rise to two two-fold-degenerate nodal rings (Weyl rings) connected by drumhead surface states, confirmed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Our results suggest that the 2 * 2 CCDW ordering gaps out one Weyl ring in accordance with the CDW band folding, while the other Weyl ring remains gapless with intact surface states. In addition, superconductivity emerges at 0.91 K, with the upper critical field deviating from the s-wave behavior at low temperature, implying possibly unconventional superconductivity. Therefore, InxTaSe2 represents an interesting material system to study the interplay between CDW, nontrivial band topology and superconductivity.

Suggested quasi Cassegrain system for multi-beam observation of FAST

FAST, the largest single-dish radio telescope in the world, has a 500-meter diameter main reflector and a 300-meter diameter illumination area. It has a shape variable main reflector, which changes the shape of the illuminated area in the main reflector into a paraboloid continuously. In this article, we propose a quasi Cassegrain system to FAST. The detailed design results are given in this paper. Such a quasi Cassegrain system only needs to add a 14.6-meter diameter secondary reflector, which is close to the size of the feed cabin, the distance from the secondary reflector to the focus is only 5.08-meter, and it has excellent image quality. In this quasi Cassegrain system the shape of the illuminated area in the main reflector continuously changes into an optimized hyperboloid. Using this quasi Cassegrain system from frequency 0.5 G to 8 G, the multi-beam system can include 7 to 217 feeds. If this system is used in combination with PAF technology, more multi-beam feeds can be used.

Estimation of Parameters in Avian Movement Models

The knowledge of the movement of animals is important and necessary for ecologists to do further analysis such as exploring the animal migration route. A novel method which is based on the state space modeling has been proposed to track the bird, where the VHF transmitter is attached to the bird to emit the signal and several towers with antenna arrays installed on its top are built to receive the signal. The method consists of two parts, the first one is called movement model which accounts for prediction of the dynamic movement of the target, and the second part is the measurement model which links the target's state variables to the available measurements data, the measurement includes the time when the signal was detected, the ID of the antenna array which detected the signal and integers between 0 and 255, the integers are proportional to the strength of received signal. The extended Kalman filter is then applied to estimate the location of the target with combing the movement model and measurement model. In the movement model, several parameters with positive values are deployed to define the change of the state variables with time, these parameters reflect the relationship of the state variables at current time and next time. In this paper, a method based on the maximum likelihood estimation is proposed to estimate the appropriate values for these unknown constant variables with given measurement data, and a kite is applied to demonstrate the validity of the proposed method. Furthermore, the unscented transformation is applied in Kalman filter to achieve more accurate estimation of the target's states.

Superconductivity in a misfit layered compound (SnSe)$_{1.16}$(NbSe$_2$)

The large size single crystals of (SnSe)$_{1.16}$(NbSe$_2$) misfit layered compound were grown and superconductivity with $T_c$ of 3.4 K was first discovered in this system. Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) clearly display the misfit feature between SnSe and NbSe$_2$ subsystems. The Sommerfeld coefficient $γ$ inferred from specific-heat measurements is 16.73 mJ mol$^{-1}$ K$^{-2}$, slightly larger than the usual misfit compounds. The normalized specific heat jump $Δ$$C_e$/$γ$$T_{\rm c}$ is about 0.98, and the electron-phonon coupling constant $λ$$_{e-ph}$ is estimated to be 0.80. The estimated value of the in-plane upper critical magnetic field, $H_{c2}^{ab}$(0), is about 7.82 T, exceeding the Pauli paramagnetic limit slightly. Both the specific-heat and $H_{c2}$ data suggest that (SnSe)$_{1.16}$(NbSe$_2$) is a multi-band superconductor.

Pressure induced superconductivity bordering a charge-density-wave state in NbTe4 with strong spinorbit coupling

Transition-metal chalcogenides host various phases of matter, such as charge-density wave (CDW), superconductors, and topological insulators or semimetals. Superconductivity and its competition with CDW in low-dimensional compounds have attracted much interest and stimulated considerable research. Here we report pressure induced superconductivity in a strong spin-orbit (SO) coupled quasi-one-dimensional (1D) transition-metal chalcogenide NbTe$_4$, which is a CDW material under ambient pressure. With increasing pressure, the CDW transition temperature is gradually suppressed, and superconducting transition, which is fingerprinted by a steep resistivity drop, emerges at pressures above 12.4 GPa. Under pressure $p$ = 69 GPa, zero resistance is detected with a transition temperature $T_c$ = 2.2 K and an upper critical field $H_{c2}$= 2 T. We also find large magnetoresistance (MR) up to 102\% at low temperatures, which is a distinct feature differentiating NbTe$_4$ from other conventional CDW materials.

Superconductivity in tantalum self-intercalated 4$Ha$-Ta$_{1.03}$Se$_2$

TaSe$_2$ has several different polytypes and abundant physical properties such as superconductivity and charge density waves (CDW), which had been investigated in the past few decades. However, there is no report on the physical properties of 4$Ha$ polytype up to now. Here we report the crystal growth and discovery of superconductivity in the tantalum self-intercalated 4$Ha$-Ta$_{1.03}$Se$_2$ single crystal with a superconducting transition onset temperature $T_{\rm c}$ $\approx$ 2.7 K, which is the first observation of superconductivity in 4$Ha$ polytype of TaSe$_2$. A slightly suppressed CDW transition is found around 106 K. A large $μ_0H_{\rm c2}/T_{\rm c}$ value of about 4.48 is found when magnetic field is applied in the $ab$ plane, which probably results from the enhanced spin-orbit coupling(SOC). Special stacking faults are observed, which further enhance the anisotropy. Although the density of states at the Fermi level is lower than that of other polytypes, $T_{\rm c}$ remains the same, indicating the stack mode of 4$Ha$ polytype may be beneficial to superconductivity in TaSe$_2$.

Giant Linear Magneto-resistance in Nonmagnetic PtBi2

We synthesized nonmagnetic PtBi$_2$ single crystals and observed a giant linear magneto-resistance (MR) up to 684\% under a magnetic field $μ_0H$ = 15 T at $T$ = 2 K. The linear MR decreases with increasing temperature, but it is still as large as 61\% under $μ_0H$ of 15 T at room temperature. Such a giant linear MR is unlikely to be described by the quantum model as the quantum condition is not satisfied. Instead, we found that the slope of MR scales with the Hall mobility, and it can be well explained by a classical disorder model.
