Synthesis, crystal structure and physical properties of quasi-one-dimensional ACr$_3$As$_3$ (A = Rb, Cs)

Recently, new Cr-based superconductors, A$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$ (A = K, Rb, Cs), have gained a strong interest because of their one-dimensional crystal structures and electron correlations. Here we report the crystal structure and physical properties of two related materials ACr$_3$As$_3$ (A = Rb, Cs) which are synthesized via a soft-chemical A+ deintercalation in A$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$. The new compounds remain one-dimensional (Cr$_3$As$_3$)$_{\infty}$ linear chains, and the interchain distance can be tuned by the incorporation of the alkali-metal cations with different sizes. The physical-property measurements indicate a local-moment behavior at high temperatures, and the moments freeze into a cluster spin-glass state below 5$\sim$6 K. No superconductivity was observed in both materials. We also found that, with increasing the interchain distance, the Cr effective moments increase monotonically, accompanied with the enhancement of semi-conductivity. Our results shed light on the understanding of occurrence of superconductivity in A$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$.

Physical properties and electronic structure of Sr$_2$Cr$_3$As$_2$O$_2$ containing CrO$_2$ and Cr$_2$As$_2$ square-planar lattices

We report the physical properties and electronic structure calculations of a layered chromium oxypnictide, Sr$_2$Cr$_3$As$_2$O$_2$, which crystallizes in a Sr$_2$Mn$_3$As$_2$O$_2$-type structure containing both CrO$_2$ planes and Cr$_2$As$_2$ layers. The newly synthesized material exhibits a metallic conduction with a dominant electron-magnon scattering. Magnetic and specific-heat measurements indicate at least two intrinsic magnetic transitions below room temperature. One is an antiferromagnetic transition at 291 K, probably associated with a spin ordering in the Cr$_2$As$_2$ layers. Another transition is broad, occurring at around 38 K, and possibly due to a short-range spin order in the CrO$_2$ planes. Our first-principles calculations indicate predominant two-dimensional antiferromagnetic exchange couplings, and suggest a KG-type (i.e. K$_2$NiF$_4$ type for CrO$_2$ planes and G type for Cr$_2$As$_2$ layers) magnetic structure, with reduced moments for both Cr sublattices. The corresponding electronic states near the Fermi energy are mostly contributed from Cr-3$d$ orbitals which weakly (modestly) hybridize with the O-2$p$ (As-4$p$) orbitals in the CrO$_2$ (Cr$_2$As$_2$) layers. The bare bandstructure density of states at the Fermi level is only $\sim$1/4 of the experimental value derived from the low-temperature specific-heat data, consistent with the remarkable electron-magnon coupling. The title compound is argued to be a possible candidate to host superconductivity.

Cluster spin-glass ground state in quasi-one-dimensional KCr$_{3}$As$_{3}$

We report structural and physical properties of a new quasi-one-dimensional Cr-based compound, KCr$_{3}$As$_{3}$, which is prepared by potassium deintercalation from the superconductive K$_{2}$Cr$_{3}$As$_{3}$. KCr$_{3}$As$_{3}$ adopts the TlFe$_{3}$Te$_{3}$-type structure with space group $P6_{3}$/$m$ (No. 176). The high-temperature magnetic susceptibility obeys the Curie-Weiss law with an effective magnetic moment of 0.68 $μ_{\mathrm{B}}$/Cr. Below 56 K the susceptibility deviates from the high-temperature Curie-Weiss behavior, coinciding with the rapid increase in resistivity, which suggests formation of spin clusters. The short-range spin correlations are also supported by the specific-heat data. The title material does not exhibit bulk superconductivity; instead, it shows a cluster spin-glass state below $\sim$ 5 K.

Superconductivity in quasi-one-dimensional K$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$ with significant electron correlations

We report the discovery of bulk superconductivity (SC) at 6.1 K in a quasi-one-dimensional (Q1D) chromium pnictide K$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$ which contains [(Cr$_3$As$_3$)$^{2-}$]$_{\infty}$ double-walled subnano-tubes with face-sharing Cr$_{6/2}$ (As$_{6/2}$) octahedron linear chains in the inner (outer) wall. The material has a large electronic specific-heat coefficient of 70$\sim$75 mJ K$^{-2}$ mol$^{-1}$, indicating significantly strong electron correlations. Signature of non-Fermi liquid behavior is shown by the linear temperature dependence of resistivity in a broad temperature range from 7 to 300 K. Unconventional SC is preliminarily manifested by the estimated upper critical field exceeding the Pauli limit by a factor of three to four. The title compound represents a rare example that possibly unconventional SC emerges in a Q1D system with strong electron correlations.

Superconductivity in quasi-one-dimensional Cs2Cr3As3 with large interchain distance

Since the discovery of high-temperature superconductivity (SC) in quasi-two-dimensional copper oxides, a few layered compounds, which bear similarities to the cuprates, have also been found to host unconventional SC. Our recent observation of SC at 6.1 K in correlated electron material K2Cr3As3 (J. K. Bao et al., arXiv: 1412.0067) represents an obviously different paradigm, primarily because of its quasi-one-dimensional (Q1D) nature. The new material is structurally featured by the (Cr3As3)2- double-walled subnano-tubes composed of face-sharing Cr6/2 (As6/2) octahedron linear chains, which are well separated by columns of K+ counterions. Later, an isostructural superconducting Rb2Cr3As3 was synthesized, thus forming a new superconducting family. Here we report the third member, Cs2Cr3As3, which possesses the largest interchain distance. SC appears below 2.2 K. Similar to the former two sister compounds, Cs2Cr3As3 exhibits a non-Fermi liquid behavior with a linear temperature dependence of resistivity in the normal state, and a high upper critical field beyond the Pauli limit as well, suggesting common unconventional SC in the Q1D Cr-based material.

Synaptotagmin 7 Functions as a Ca2+-sensor for Synaptic Vesicle Replenishment

Synaptotagmin (syt) 7 is one of three syt isoforms found in all metazoans; it is ubiquitously expressed, yet its function in neurons remains obscure. Here, we resolved Ca2+-dependent and Ca2+-independent synaptic vesicle (SV) replenishment pathways, and found that syt 7 plays a selective and critical role in the Ca2+-dependent pathway. Mutations that disrupt Ca2+-binding to syt 7 abolish this function, suggesting that syt 7 functions as a Ca2+-sensor for replenishment. The Ca2+-binding protein calmodulin (CaM) has also been implicated in SV replenishment, and we found that loss of syt 7 was phenocopied by a CaM antagonist. Moreover, we discovered that syt 7 binds to CaM in a highly specific and Ca2+-dependent manner; this interaction requires intact Ca2+-binding sites within syt 7. Together, these data indicate that a complex of two conserved Ca2+-binding proteins, syt 7 and CaM, serve as a key regulator of SV replenishment in presynaptic nerve terminals.

The Grone-Merris Conjecture

In spectral graph theory, Grone and Merris conjecture that the spectrum of the Laplacian matrix of a finite graph is majorized by the conjugate degree sequence of this graph. We give a complete proof for this conjecture.

Microscopic magnetic dipole radiation in neutron stars

There is ${}^3P_2$ neutron superfluid region in NS (neutron star) interior. For a rotating NS, the ${}^3P_2$ superfluid region is like a system of rotating magnetic dipoles. It will give out electromagnetic radiation, which may provides a new heating mechanism of NSs. This heating mechanism plus some cooling agent may give sound explanation to NS glitches.

Local representations of the quantum Teichmuller space

We introduce a certain type of representations for the quantum Teichmuller space of a punctured surface, which we call local representations. We show that, up to finitely many choices, these purely algebraic representations are classified by classical geometric data. We also investigate the family of intertwining operators associated to such a representations. In particular, we use these intertwiners to construct a natural fiber bundle over the Teichmuller space and its quotient under the action of the mapping class group. This construction also offers a convenient framework to exhibit invariants of surface diffeomorphisms.

Quantum Teichmüller spaces and Kashaev's 6j-symbols

The Kashaev invariants of 3-manifolds are based on $6j$-symbols from the representation theory of the Weyl algebra, a Hopf algebra corresponding to the Borel subalgebra of $U_q(sl(2,\C))$. In this paper, we show that Kashaev's $6j$-symbols are intertwining operators of local representations of quantum Teichmüller spaces. This relates Kashaev's work with the theory of quantum Teichmüller space, which was developed by Chekhov-Fock, Kashaev and continued by Bonahon-Liu.

Intersecting non-SUSY $p$-brane with chargeless 0-brane as black $p$-brane

Unlike BPS $p$-brane, non-supersymmetric (non-susy) $p$-brane could be either charged or chargeless. As envisaged in [hep-th/0503007], we construct an intersecting non-susy $p$-brane with chargeless non-susy $q$-brane by taking T-dualities along the delocalized directions of the non-susy $q$-brane solution delocalized in $(p-q)$ transverse directions (where $p\geq q$). In general these solutions are characterized by four independent parameters. We show that when $q=0$ the intersecting charged as well as chargeless non-susy $p$-brane with chargeless 0-brane can be mapped by a coordinate transformation to black $p$-brane when two of the four parameters characterizing the solution take some special values. For definiteness we restrict our discussion to space-time dimensions $d=10$. We observe that parameters characterizing the black brane and the related dynamics are in general in a different branch of the parameter space from those describing the brane-antibrane annihilation process. We demonstrate this in the two examples, namely, the non-susy D0-brane and the intersecting non-susy D4 and D0-branes, where the solutions with the explicit microscopic descriptions are known.

A Uniqueness Property for the Quantization of Teichmüller Spaces

Chekhov, Fock and Kashaev introduced a quantization of the Teichmüller space $\mathcal{T}^q(S)$ of a punctured surface $S$, and an exponential version of this construction was developed by Bonahon and Liu. The construction of the quantum Teichmüller space crucially depends on certain coordinate change isomorphisms between the Chekhov-Fock algebras associated to different ideal triangulations of $S$. We show that these coordinate change isomorphisms are essentially unique, once we require them to satisfy a certain number of natural conditions.

Quantum Horizons

Treating macro-black hole as quantum states, and using Brown-York quaselocal gravitational energy definition and Heisenberg uncertainty principle, we find out the classical horizon with singularity spreads into a quantum horizon in which the space-time is non-commutative and the spread range is determined dynamically. A Quantum Field Theory (QFT) model in curved space with quantum horizon is constructed. By using it, the black hole entropy and the Hawking temperature are calculated successfully. The $ϕ-$field mode number is predicted and our quantum horizon model favors to support the Minimal Super-symmetric Standard Model.

Quantum horizon and thermodynamics of black hole

A semi-classical reasoning leads to the non-commutativity of space and time coordinates near the horizon of static non-extreme black hole, and renders the classical horizon spreading to {\it Quantum Horizon} . In terms of the background metric of the black hole with the {\it Quantum Horizon}, a quantum field theory in curved space without ultraviolet divergency near the horizon is formulated. In this formulism, the black hole thermodynamics is reproduced correctly without both ambiguity and additional hypothesis in the deriving the hole's Hawking radiations and entropies, and a new interesting prediction on the number of radiative field modes $N$ is provided. Specifically, the main results are follows: 1, Hawking radiations rightly emerge as an effect of quantum tunneling through the quantum horizon, and hence the ambiguities due to going across the singularity on the classical horizon were got rid of; 2, 't Hooft's brick wall thickness hypothesis and the boundary condition imposed for the field considered in his brick wall model were got rid of also, and related physics has been interpreted; 3, The present theory is parameter free. So, the theory has power to predict the multiplicity $N$ of radiative field modes according to the requirement of normalization of Hawking-Bekenstein entropy. It has been found that $N\simeq 162$, which is just in good agreement with one in the Minimal Super-symmetric Standard Model. The studies in this paper represent an attempt to reveal some physics near the horizon at Planck scale. This paper serves a brief review on the author's works on this subject.

Remarks on 't Hooft's Brick Wall Model

A semi-classical reasoning leads to the non-commutativity of the space and time coordinates near the horizon of Schwarzschild black hole. This non-commutativity in turn provides a mechanism to interpret the brick wall thickness hypothesis in 't Hooft's brick wall model as well as the boundary condition imposed for the field considered. For concreteness, we consider a noncommutative scalar field model near the horizon and derive the effective metric via the equation of motion of noncommutative scalar field. This metric displays a new horizon in addition to the original one associated with the Schwarzschild black hole. The infinite red-shifting of the scalar field on the new horizon determines the range of the noncommutativ space and explains the relevant boundary condition for the field. This range enables us to calculate the entropy of black hole as proportional to the area of its original horizon along the same line as in 't Hooft's model, and the thickness of the brick wall is found to be proportional to the thermal average of the noncommutative space-time range. The Hawking temperature has been derived in this formalism. The study here represents an attempt to reveal some physics beyond the brick wall model.
