Learning Symbolic Operators: A Neurosymbolic Solution for Autonomous Disassembly of Electric Vehicle Battery

The booming of electric vehicles demands efficient battery disassembly for recycling to be environment-friendly. Currently, battery disassembly is still primarily done by humans, probably assisted by robots, due to the unstructured environment and high uncertainties. It is highly desirable to design autonomous solutions to improve work efficiency and lower human risks in high voltage and toxic environments. This paper proposes a novel neurosymbolic method, which augments the traditional Variational Autoencoder (VAE) model to learn symbolic operators based on raw sensory inputs and their relationships. The symbolic operators include a probabilistic state symbol grounding model and a state transition matrix for predicting states after each execution to enable autonomous task and motion planning. At last, the method's feasibility is verified through test results.

Autonomous Electric Vehicle Battery Disassembly Based on NeuroSymbolic Computing

The booming of electric vehicles demands efficient battery disassembly for recycling to be environment-friendly. Due to the unstructured environment and high uncertainties, battery disassembly is still primarily done by humans, probably assisted by robots. It is highly desirable to design autonomous solutions to improve work efficiency and lower human risks in high voltage and toxic environments. This paper proposes a novel framework of the NeuroSymbolic task and motion planning method to disassemble batteries in an unstructured environment using robots automatically. It enables robots to independently locate and disassemble battery bolts, with or without obstacles. This study not only provides a solution for intelligently disassembling electric vehicle batteries but also verifies its feasibility through a set of test results with the robot accomplishing the disassembly tasks in a complex and dynamic environment.

Dynamic Spatial Propagation Network for Depth Completion

Image-guided depth completion aims to generate dense depth maps with sparse depth measurements and corresponding RGB images. Currently, spatial propagation networks (SPNs) are the most popular affinity-based methods in depth completion, but they still suffer from the representation limitation of the fixed affinity and the over smoothing during iterations. Our solution is to estimate independent affinity matrices in each SPN iteration, but it is over-parameterized and heavy calculation. This paper introduces an efficient model that learns the affinity among neighboring pixels with an attention-based, dynamic approach. Specifically, the Dynamic Spatial Propagation Network (DySPN) we proposed makes use of a non-linear propagation model (NLPM). It decouples the neighborhood into parts regarding to different distances and recursively generates independent attention maps to refine these parts into adaptive affinity matrices. Furthermore, we adopt a diffusion suppression (DS) operation so that the model converges at an early stage to prevent over-smoothing of dense depth. Finally, in order to decrease the computational cost required, we also introduce three variations that reduce the amount of neighbors and attentions needed while still retaining similar accuracy. In practice, our method requires less iteration to match the performance of other SPNs and yields better results overall. DySPN outperforms other state-of-the-art (SoTA) methods on KITTI Depth Completion (DC) evaluation by the time of submission and is able to yield SoTA performance in NYU Depth v2 dataset as well.

Verification of asymptotic homogenization method developed for periodic architected materials in strain gradient continuum

Strain gradient theory is an accurate model for capturing the size effect and localization phenomena. However, the challenge in identification of corresponding constitutive parameters limits the practical application of the theory. We present and utilize asymptotic homogenization herein. All parameters in rank four, five, and six tensors are determined with the demonstrated computational approach. Examples for epoxy carbon fiber composite, metal matrix composite, and aluminum foam illustrate the effectiveness and versatility of the proposed method. The influences of volume fraction of matrix, the stack of RVEs, and the varying unit cell lengths on the identified parameters are investigated. The homogenization computational tool is applicable to a wide class materials and makes use of open-source codes in FEniCS. We make all of the codes publicly available in order to encourage a transparent scientific exchange.

Subtask-dominated Transfer Learning for Long-tail Person Search

Person search unifies person detection and person re-identification (Re-ID) to locate query persons from the panoramic gallery images. One major challenge comes from the imbalanced long-tail person identity distributions, which prevents the one-step person search model from learning discriminative person features for the final re-identification. However, it is under-explored how to solve the heavy imbalanced identity distributions for the one-step person search. Techniques designed for the long-tail classification task, for example, image-level re-sampling strategies, are hard to be effectively applied to the one-step person search which jointly solves person detection and Re-ID subtasks with a detection-based multi-task framework. To tackle this problem, we propose a Subtask-dominated Transfer Learning (STL) method. The STL method solves the long-tail problem in the pretraining stage of the dominated Re-ID subtask and improves the one-step person search by transfer learning of the pretrained model. We further design a Multi-level RoI Fusion Pooling layer to enhance the discrimination ability of person features for the one-step person search. Extensive experiments on CUHK-SYSU and PRW datasets demonstrate the superiority and effectiveness of the proposed method.

Making Person Search Enjoy the Merits of Person Re-identification

Person search is an extended task of person re-identification (Re-ID). However, most existing one-step person search works have not studied how to employ existing advanced Re-ID models to boost the one-step person search performance due to the integration of person detection and Re-ID. To address this issue, we propose a faster and stronger one-step person search framework, the Teacher-guided Disentangling Networks (TDN), to make the one-step person search enjoy the merits of the existing Re-ID researches. The proposed TDN can significantly boost the person search performance by transferring the advanced person Re-ID knowledge to the person search model. In the proposed TDN, for better knowledge transfer from the Re-ID teacher model to the one-step person search model, we design a strong one-step person search base framework by partially disentangling the two subtasks. Besides, we propose a Knowledge Transfer Bridge module to bridge the scale gap caused by different input formats between the Re-ID model and one-step person search model. During testing, we further propose the Ranking with Context Persons strategy to exploit the context information in panoramic images for better retrieval. Experiments on two public person search datasets demonstrate the favorable performance of the proposed method.

Efficient Context-Aware Network for Abdominal Multi-organ Segmentation

The contextual information, presented in abdominal CT scan, is relative consistent. In order to make full use of the overall 3D context, we develop a whole-volume-based coarse-to-fine framework for efficient and effective abdominal multi-organ segmentation. We propose a new efficientSegNet network, which is composed of basic encoder, slim decoder and efficient context block. For the decoder module, anisotropic convolution with a k*k*1 intra-slice convolution and a 1*1*k inter-slice convolution, is designed to reduce the computation burden. For the context block, we propose strip pooling module to capture anisotropic and long-range contextual information, which exists in abdominal scene. Quantitative evaluation on the FLARE2021 validation cases, this method achieves the average dice similarity coefficient (DSC) of 0.895 and average normalized surface distance (NSD) of 0.775. This method won the 1st place on the 2021-MICCAI-FLARE challenge. Codes and models are available at https://github.com/Shanghai-Aitrox-Technology/EfficientSegmentation.

High Precision Indoor Localization with Dummy Antennas -- An Experimental Study

With the rising demand for indoor localization, high precision technique-based fingerprints became increasingly important nowadays. The newest advanced localization system makes effort to improve localization accuracy in the time or frequency domain, for example, the UWB localization technique can achieve centimeter-level accuracy but have a high cost. Therefore, we present a spatial domain extension-based scheme with low cost and verify the effectiveness of antennas extension in localization accuracy. In this paper, we achieve sub-meter level localization accuracy using a single AP by extending three radio links of the modified laptops to more antennas. Moreover, the experimental results show that the localization performance is superior as the number of antennas increases with the help of spatial domain extension and angular domain assisted.

Towards Cross-Granularity Few-Shot Learning: Coarse-to-Fine Pseudo-Labeling with Visual-Semantic Meta-Embedding

Few-shot learning aims at rapidly adapting to novel categories with only a handful of samples at test time, which has been predominantly tackled with the idea of meta-learning. However, meta-learning approaches essentially learn across a variety of few-shot tasks and thus still require large-scale training data with fine-grained supervision to derive a generalized model, thereby involving prohibitive annotation cost. In this paper, we advance the few-shot classification paradigm towards a more challenging scenario, i.e., cross-granularity few-shot classification, where the model observes only coarse labels during training while is expected to perform fine-grained classification during testing. This task largely relieves the annotation cost since fine-grained labeling usually requires strong domain-specific expertise. To bridge the cross-granularity gap, we approximate the fine-grained data distribution by greedy clustering of each coarse-class into pseudo-fine-classes according to the similarity of image embeddings. We then propose a meta-embedder that jointly optimizes the visual- and semantic-discrimination, in both instance-wise and coarse class-wise, to obtain a good feature space for this coarse-to-fine pseudo-labeling process. Extensive experiments and ablation studies are conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of our approach on three representative datasets.

MPASNET: Motion Prior-Aware Siamese Network for Unsupervised Deep Crowd Segmentation in Video Scenes

Crowd segmentation is a fundamental task serving as the basis of crowded scene analysis, and it is highly desirable to obtain refined pixel-level segmentation maps. However, it remains a challenging problem, as existing approaches either require dense pixel-level annotations to train deep learning models or merely produce rough segmentation maps from optical or particle flows with physical models. In this paper, we propose the Motion Prior-Aware Siamese Network (MPASNET) for unsupervised crowd semantic segmentation. This model not only eliminates the need for annotation but also yields high-quality segmentation maps. Specially, we first analyze the coherent motion patterns across the frames and then apply a circular region merging strategy on the collective particles to generate pseudo-labels. Moreover, we equip MPASNET with siamese branches for augmentation-invariant regularization and siamese feature aggregation. Experiments over benchmark datasets indicate that our model outperforms the state-of-the-arts by more than 12% in terms of mIoU.

Attentive Semantic Exploring for Manipulated Face Detection

Face manipulation methods develop rapidly in recent years, whose potential risk to society accounts for the emerging of researches on detection methods. However, due to the diversity of manipulation methods and the high quality of fake images, detection methods suffer from a lack of generalization ability. To solve the problem, we find that segmenting images into semantic fragments could be effective, as discriminative defects and distortions are closely related to such fragments. Besides, to highlight discriminative regions in fragments and to measure contribution to the final prediction of each fragment is efficient for the improvement of generalization ability. Therefore, we propose a novel manipulated face detection method based on Multilevel Facial Semantic Segmentation and Cascade Attention Mechanism. To evaluate our method, we reconstruct two datasets: GGFI and FFMI, and also collect two open-source datasets. Experiments on four datasets verify the advantages of our approach against other state-of-the-arts, especially its generalization ability.

Weighted Bilinear Coding over Salient Body Parts for Person Re-identification

Deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have demonstrated dominant performance in person re-identification (Re-ID). Existing CNN based methods utilize global average pooling (GAP) to aggregate intermediate convolutional features for Re-ID. However, this strategy only considers the first-order statistics of local features and treats local features at different locations equally important, leading to sub-optimal feature representation. To deal with these issues, we propose a novel weighted bilinear coding (WBC) framework for local feature aggregation in CNN networks to pursue more representative and discriminative feature representations, which can adapt to other state-of-the-art methods and improve their performance. In specific, bilinear coding is used to encode the channel-wise feature correlations to capture richer feature interactions. Meanwhile, a weighting scheme is applied on the bilinear coding to adaptively adjust the weights of local features at different locations based on their importance in recognition, further improving the discriminability of feature aggregation. To handle the spatial misalignment issue, we use a salient part net (spatial attention module) to derive salient body parts, and apply the WBC model on each part. The final representation, formed by concatenating the WBC encoded features of each part, is both discriminative and resistant to spatial misalignment. Experiments on three benchmarks including Market-1501, DukeMTMC-reID and CUHK03 evidence the favorable performance of our method against other outstanding methods.

Distribution Context Aware Loss for Person Re-identification

To learn the optimal similarity function between probe and gallery images in Person re-identification, effective deep metric learning methods have been extensively explored to obtain discriminative feature embedding. However, existing metric loss like triplet loss and its variants always emphasize pair-wise relations but ignore the distribution context in feature space, leading to inconsistency and sub-optimal. In fact, the similarity of one pair not only decides the match of this pair, but also has potential impacts on other sample pairs. In this paper, we propose a novel Distribution Context Aware (DCA) loss based on triplet loss to combine both numerical similarity and relation similarity in feature space for better clustering. Extensive experiments on three benchmarks including Market-1501, DukeMTMC-reID and MSMT17, evidence the favorable performance of our method against the corresponding baseline and other state-of-the-art methods.

Online Multi-Object Tracking with Dual Matching Attention Networks

In this paper, we propose an online Multi-Object Tracking (MOT) approach which integrates the merits of single object tracking and data association methods in a unified framework to handle noisy detections and frequent interactions between targets. Specifically, for applying single object tracking in MOT, we introduce a cost-sensitive tracking loss based on the state-of-the-art visual tracker, which encourages the model to focus on hard negative distractors during online learning. For data association, we propose Dual Matching Attention Networks (DMAN) with both spatial and temporal attention mechanisms. The spatial attention module generates dual attention maps which enable the network to focus on the matching patterns of the input image pair, while the temporal attention module adaptively allocates different levels of attention to different samples in the tracklet to suppress noisy observations. Experimental results on the MOT benchmark datasets show that the proposed algorithm performs favorably against both online and offline trackers in terms of identity-preserving metrics.

Robust and Efficient Graph Correspondence Transfer for Person Re-identification

Spatial misalignment caused by variations in poses and viewpoints is one of the most critical issues that hinders the performance improvement in existing person re-identification (Re-ID) algorithms. To address this problem, in this paper, we present a robust and efficient graph correspondence transfer (REGCT) approach for explicit spatial alignment in Re-ID. Specifically, we propose to establish the patch-wise correspondences of positive training pairs via graph matching. By exploiting both spatial and visual contexts of human appearance in graph matching, meaningful semantic correspondences can be obtained. To circumvent the cumbersome \emph{on-line} graph matching in testing phase, we propose to transfer the \emph{off-line} learned patch-wise correspondences from the positive training pairs to test pairs. In detail, for each test pair, the training pairs with similar pose-pair configurations are selected as references. The matching patterns (i.e., the correspondences) of the selected references are then utilized to calculate the patch-wise feature distances of this test pair. To enhance the robustness of correspondence transfer, we design a novel pose context descriptor to accurately model human body configurations, and present an approach to measure the similarity between a pair of pose context descriptors. Meanwhile, to improve testing efficiency, we propose a correspondence template ensemble method using the voting mechanism, which significantly reduces the amount of patch-wise matchings involved in distance calculation. With aforementioned strategies, the REGCT model can effectively and efficiently handle the spatial misalignment problem in Re-ID. Extensive experiments on five challenging benchmarks, including VIPeR, Road, PRID450S, 3DPES and CUHK01, evidence the superior performance of REGCT over other state-of-the-art approaches.

The effects of oxygen in spinel oxide Li1+xTi2-xO4-delta thin films

The evolution from superconducting LiTi2O4-delta to insulating Li4Ti5O12 thin films has been studied by precisely adjusting the oxygen pressure during the sample fabrication process. In the superconducting LiTi2O4-delta films, with the increase of oxygen pressure, the oxygen vacancies are filled, and the c-axis lattice constant decreases gradually. With the increase of the oxygen pressure to a certain critical value, the c-axis lattice constant becomes stable, which implies that the Li4Ti5O12 phase comes into being. The process of oxygen filling is manifested by the angular bright-field images of the scanning transmission electron microscopy techniques. The temperature of magnetoresistance changed from positive and negative shows a non-monotonous behavior with the increase of oxygen pressure. The theoretical explanation of the oxygen effects on the structure and superconductivity of LiTi2O4-delta has also been discussed in this work.

A new electromagnetic code for ICRF antenna in EAST

The demand for an effective tool to help in the design of ion cyclotron radio frequency (ICRF) antenna system for fusion experiment has driven the development of predictive codes. A new electromagnetic code based on the method of moments (MOM) is described in the paper. The code computes the electromagnetic field by the solution of the electric field integral equation. The structure of ICRF antennas are discretized with triangular mesh. By using the new code, the scattering parameter and the surface current are given and compared with the result by commercial code CST. Moreover, the power spectra are studied with different toroidal phases for heating and current drive. Good agreement of simulation results between the new code and CST are obtained. The code has been validated against CST for EAST ICRF antenna.
