Relativistic Mean Motion Resonance

Mean motion resonances are commonly seen in planetary systems, e.g., in the formation of orbital structure of Jupiter's moons and the gaps in the rings of Saturn. In this work we study their effects in fully relativistic systems. We consider a model problem with two stellar mass black holes orbiting around a supermassive black hole. By adopting a two time-scale expansion technique and averaging over the fast varying orbital variables, we derive the effective Hamiltonian for the slowly varying dynamical variables. The formalism is illustrated with a n'_phi : n'_r : n_phi= 2:1:-2 resonance in Schwarzschild spacetime, which naturally becomes the 3:2 resonance widely studied in the Newtonian limit. We also derive the multi-body Hamiltonian in the post-Newtonian regime, where the radial and azimuthal frequencies are different because of the post-Newtonian precession. The capture and breaking conditions for these relativistic mean motion resonances are also discussed. In particular, pairs of stellar mass black holes surrounding the supermassive black hole could be locked into resonances as they enter the LISA band, and this would affect their gravitational wave waveforms.

Experimental certification of steering criterion based on general entropic uncertainty relation

Quantum steering describes the phenomenon that one system can be immediately influenced by another with local measurements. It can be detected by the violation of a powerful and useful steering criterion from general entropic uncertainty relation. This criterion, in principle, can be evaluated straightforwardly and achieved by only probability distributions from a finite set of measurement settings. Herein, we experimentally verify the steering criterion by means of the two-photon Werner-like states and three Pauli measurements. The results indicate that quantum steering can be verified by the criterion in a convenient way. In particular, it is no need to perform the usual quantum state tomography in experiment, which reduces the required experimental resources greatly. Moreover, we demonstrate that the criterion is stronger than the linear one for the detecting quantum steering of the Werner-like states.

Tidal resonance in extreme mass-ratio inspirals

We describe a new class of resonances for extreme mass-ratio inspirals (EMRIs): tidal resonances, induced by the tidal field of nearby stars or stellar-mass black holes. A tidal resonance can be viewed as a general relativistic extension of the Kozai-Lidov resonances in Newtonian systems, and is distinct from the transient resonance already known for EMRI systems. Tidal resonances will generically occur for EMRIs. By probing their influence on the phase of an EMRI waveform, we can learn about the tidal environmental of the EMRI system, albeit at the cost of a more complicated waveform model. Observations by LISA of EMRI systems therefore have the potential to provide information about the distribution of stellar-mass objects near their host galactic-center black holes.

Inspiralling eccentric binary neutron stars: orbital motion and tidal resonance

We study the orbital evolution of eccentric binary neutron stars. The orbit is described as a Quasi-Keplarian orbit with perturbations due to tidal couplings. We find that the tidal interaction between stars contributes to orbital precession, in addition to the Post-Newtonian procession. The coupling between the angular and radial motion of the binary also excites a series of harmonics in the stars' oscillation. In the small eccentricity limit, this coupling mainly gives rise to an additional orbital resonance, with the orbital frequency being one third of the f-mode frequency. For a binary with initial eccentricity $\sim 0.2$ at $50$Hz orbital frequency, the presence of this tidal resonance introduces $\sim 0.5$ phase shift in the gravitational waveform till merger, subject to uncertainties in neutron star equation of state and the distribution of binary component masses. Such phase shift in the late-inspiral stage is likely detectable with third-generation gravitational-wave detectors.

Excess Thermal Energy and Latent Heat in Nanocluster Collisional Growth

Nanoclusters can form and grow by nanocluster-monomer (condensation) and nanocluster-nanocluster (coagulation) collisions. During growth, product nanoclusters have elevated thermal energies due to potential and thermal energy exchange following a collision. Even though nanocluster collisional heating may be significant and strongly-size dependent, no prior theory describes such phenomenon. We derive a model to describe the excess thermal energy, the kinetic energy increase of the product cluster, and latent heat, the heat released to the background upon thermalization of the non-equilibrium cluster, of collisional growth. Both quantities are composed of an enthalpic term, related to potential energy minimum differences, and a size-dependent entropic term, which hinges upon heat capacity and energy partitioning. Example calculations using gold nanoclusters demonstrate that collisional heating can be important and strongly size dependent, particularly for reactive collisions involving nanoclusters composed of 14-20 atoms. Excessive latent heat release may have considerable implications in cluster formation and growth.

Multiband superconductivity and possible nodal gap in RbCr$_{3}$As$_{3}$ revealed by Andreev reflection and single-particle tunneling measurements

By measuring point-contact Andreev reflection (PCAR) spectra in the newly discovered chromium-based quasi-one-dimensional superconductor RbCr$_{3}$As$_{3}$, we find clear evidence of two superconducting components, i.e., one having a gap value of about 1.8 meV and another with a gap value of about 5 meV. Since the current injection may have components in both the direction parallel and perpendicular to the [(Cr$_{3}$As$_{3}$)$^{-}$]$_\infty$ chains in the PCAR measurements, it naturally explains the two-component feature observed in this multi-band superconductor. Detailed analysis shows that the larger gap may have an $s$-wave nature. We then carry out the single-particle tunneling measurements based on a scanning tunneling spectroscope by using the needle-like sample as the tip, and in this case the measured current is mainly parallel to the [(Cr$_{3}$As$_{3}$)$^{-}$]$_\infty$ chains. The single-particle tunneling spectra show only one gap feature with a gap value of about 1.8 meV. Fitting to the single particle tunneling spectra indicates that the gap should have a large anisotropy or even node(s). We argue that the absence of the larger gap may be related to the direction of the injecting current. Therefore, our combined experiments show the multiband superconductivity with one gap being nodal or highly anisotropic.

Observation and characterization of the zero energy conductance peak in the vortex core state of FeTe$_{0.55}$Se$_{0.45}$

The search for the Majorana fermions in condensed matter physics has attracted much attention, partially because they may be used for the fault-tolerant quantum computation. It has been predicted that the Majorana zero mode may exist in the vortex core of topological superconductors. Recently, many iron-based superconductors are claimed to exhibit a topologically nontrivial surface state, including Fe(Te,Se). Some previous experiments through scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) have found zero-bias conductance peaks (ZBCP) within the vortex cores of Fe(Te,Se). However, our early experimental results have revealed the Caroli-de Gennes-Matricon (CdGM) discrete quantum levels in about 20% vortices. In many other vortices, we observed a dominant peak locating near zero bias. Here we show further study on the vortex core state of many more vortices in FeTe$_{0.55}$Se$_{0.45}$. In some vortices, if we take a certain criterion of bias voltage window near zero energy, we indeed see a zero energy mode. Some vortices exhibit zero energy bound state peaks with relatively symmetric background, which cannot be interpreted as the CdGM discrete states. The probability for vortices showing the ZBCP lowers down with the increase of magnetic field. Meanwhile it seems that the presence and absence of the ZBCP has no clear relationship with the Te/Se ratio on the surface. Temperature dependence of the spectra reveals that the ZBCP becomes weakened with increasing temperature and disappears at about 4 K. Our results provide a confirmed supplementary to the early claimed zero energy modes within the vortex cores of Fe(Te,Se). Detailed characterization of these zero energy modes versus magnetic field, temperature and spatial distribution of Te/Se will help to clarify its origin.

Inequality relation between entanglement and Bell nonlocality for arbitrary two-qubit states

Entanglement and Bell nonlocality are used to describe quantum inseparabilities. Bell-nonlocal states form a strict subset of entangled states. A natural question arises concerning how much territory Bell nonlocality occupies entanglement for a general two-qubit entangled state. In this work, we investigate the relation between entanglement and Bell nonlocality by using lots of randomly generated two-qubit states, and give out a constraint inequality relation between the two quantum resources. For studying the upper or lower boundary of the inequality relation, we discover maximally (minimally) nonlocal entangled states, which maximize (minimize) the value of the Bell nonlocality for a given value of the entanglement. Futhermore, we consider a special kind of mixed state transformed by performing an arbitrary unitary operation on werner state. It is found that the special mixed state's entanglement and Bell nonlocality are related to ones of a pure state transformed by the unitary operation performed on the Bell state.

Black Hole Discharge: very-high-energy gamma rays from black hole-neutron star mergers

With mass ratio larger than $\sim 5$ (which depends on the black hole spin and the star radius), star disruption is not expected for a black hole merging with a neutron star during the final plunge phase. In the late inspiral stage, the black hole is likely charged as it cuts through the magnetic field carried by the neutron star, leaving a temporarily charged black hole after merger. The unstable charged state of the remnant black hole rapidly neutralizes by interacting with the surrounding plasma and photons, which we investigate in first principle by numerically solving a coupled set of Boltzmann equations of 1+1 form for non-spinning BH background. The resulting basic picture is as follows. Electrons and positrons are accelerated in the BH electric field, which then lose energy to surrounding soft photons via Compton scattering; more electrons and positrons will be created from pair production as the hard photons colliding with soft photons, or through the Schwinger process in strong electromagnetic fields. The cascade stops when the charged black hole accretes enough opposite charges and becomes neutralized. We find that $\sim 10\%$ (which depends on the soft photon energy and number density) of the total electric energy is carried away to infinity in a time interval $\sim 1$ ms by very-high-energy ($>50$ GeV, the low energy detection threshold of the MAGIC telescope) gamma rays whose spectrum is approximately a power law with spectral index $\sim -2.3$. We expect the discharge picture to be true for spinning charged BHs as well.

Observation of interference between resonant and detuned STIRAP in the adiabatic creation of $^{23}$Na$^{40}$K molecules

Stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) allows to efficiently transferring the populations between two discrete quantum states and has been used to prepare molecules in their rovibrational ground state. In realistic molecules, a well-resolved intermediate state is usually selected to implement the resonant STIRAP. Due to the complex molecular level structures, the detuned STIRAP always coexists with the resonant STIRAP and may cause unexpected interference phenomenon. However, it is generally accepted that the detuned STIRAP can be neglected if compared with the resonant STIRAP. Here we report on the first observation of interference between the resonant and detuned STIRAP in the adiabatic creation of $^{23}$Na$^{40}$K ground-state molecules. The interference is identified by observing that the number of Feshbach molecules after a round-trip STIRAP oscillates as a function of the hold time, with a visibility of about 90\%. This occurs even if the intermediate excited states are well resolved, and the single-photon detuning of the detuned STIRAP is about one order of magnitude larger than the linewidth of the excited state and the Rabi frequencies of the STIRAP lasers. Moreover, the observed interference indicates that if more than one hyperfine level of the ground state is populated, the STIRAP prepares a coherent superposition state among them, but not an incoherent mixed state. Further, the purity of the hyperfine levels of the created ground state can be quantitatively determined by the visibility of the oscillation.

Experimental investigation of nonlocal advantage of quantum coherence

Nonlocal advantage of quantum coherence (NAQC) based on coherence complementarity relations is generally viewed as a stronger nonclassical correlation than Bell nonlocality. An arbitrary two-qubit state with NAQC must be an entangled state, which demonstrates that the criterion of NAQC can also be regarded as an entanglement witness. In this paper, we experimentally investigate the NAQC for Bell-diagonal states with high fidelity in an optics-based platform. We perform local measurements on a subsystem in three mutually unbiased bases and reconstruct the density matrices of the measured states by quantum state tomography process. By analyzing characteristic of the $l_1$ norm, relative entropy and skew information of coherence with parameters of quantum states, NAQC for the quantum states is accurately captured, and it shows that our experimental results are well compatible with the theoretical predictions. It is worth mentioning that quantum states with NAQC would have higher entanglement, and thus NAQC could be expected to be a kind of useful physical resource for quantum information processing.

Zero-Energy Modes on Superconducting Bismuth Islands Deposited on Fe(Te,Se)

Topological superconductivity is one of the frontier research directions in condensed matter physics. One of the unique elementary excitations in topological superconducting state is the Majorana fermion (mode) which is its own antiparticle and obeys the non-Abelian statistics, and thus useful for constructing the fault-tolerant quantum computing. The evidence for Majorana fermions (mode) in condensed matter state is now quickly accumulated. Here we report the easily achievable zero-energy mode on the tunneling spectra on Bi islands deposited on the Fe(Te,Se) superconducting single crystals. We interpret this result as the consequence of proximity effect induced topological superconductivity on the Bi islands with strong spin-orbital coupling effect. The zero-energy mode is argued to be the signature of the Majorana modes in this size confined system.

Universal trade-off relation between coherence and intrinsic concurrence for two-qubit states

Entanglement and coherence are two essential quantum resources for quantum information processing. A natural question arises of whether there are direct link between them. And by thinking about this question, we propose a new measure for quantum state that contains concurrence and is called intrinsic concurrence. Interestingly, we discover that the intrinsic concurrence is always complementary to coherence. Note that the intrinsic concurrence is related to the concurrence of a special pure state ensemble. In order to explain the trade-off relation more intuitively, we apply it in some composite systems composed by a single-qubit state coupling four typical noise channels with the aim at illustrating their mutual transformation relationship between their coherence and intrinsic concurrence. This unified trade-off relation will provide more flexibility in exploiting one resource to perform quantum tasks and also provide credible theoretical basis for the interconversion of the two important quantum resources.

Lyman Alpha Galaxies in the Epoch of Reionization (LAGER): Spectroscopic Confirmation of Two Redshift ~ 7.0 Galaxies

We spectroscopically confirmed two narrow-band selected redshift 7.0 Ly$α$ galaxies and studied their restframe UV spectra. The Ly$α$ and other UV nebular lines are very useful to confirm the galactic redshifts and diagnose the different mechanisms driving the ionizing emission. We observed two narrowband-selected $z$=7.0 Ly$α$ candidates in the LAGER Chandra Deep Field South (CDFS) field with IMACS at Magellan telescope and confirmed they are Ly$α$ emitters at $z$=6.924 and 6.931. In one galaxy, we also obtained deep NIR spectroscopy, which yields non-detections of the high-ionization UV nebular lines. We measured upper-limits of the ratios of CIV$λ$1548/Ly$α$, HeII$λ$1640/Ly$α$, OIII]$λ$1660/Ly$α$, and CIII]$λ$1909/Ly$α$ from the NIR spectra. These upper-limits imply that the ionizing emission in this galaxy is dominated by normal star formation instead of AGN.

Design for the First Narrowband Filter for the Dark Energy Camera: Optimizing the LAGER Survey for z ~ 7 Galaxies

We present the design for the first narrowband filter NB964 for the Dark Energy Camera (DECam), which is operated on the 4m Blanco Telescope at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory. The NB964 filter profile is essentially defined by maximizing the power of searching for Lyman alpha emitting galaxies (LAEs) in the epoch of reionization, with the consideration of the night sky background in the near-infrared and the DECam quantum efficiency. The NB964 filter was manufactured by Materion in 2015. It has a central wavelength of 964.2 nm and a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 9.2 nm. An NB964 survey named LAGER (Lyman Alpha Galaxies in the Epoch of Reionization) has been ongoing since December 2015. Here we report results of lab tests, on-site tests and observations with the NB964 filter. The excellent performances of this filter ensure that the LAGER project is able to detect LAEs at z~7 with a high efficiency.

Gravitational floating orbits around hairy black holes

We show that gravitational floating orbits may exist for black holes with rotating hairs. These black hole hairs could originate from the superradiant growth of a light axion field around the rotating black holes. If a test particle rotates around the black hole, its tidal field may resonantly trigger the dynamical transition between a co-rotating state and a dissipative state of the axion cloud. A tidal bulge is generated by the beating of modes, which feeds angular momentum back to the test particle. Following this mechanism, an extreme-mass-ratio-inspiral (EMRI) system, as a source for LISA, may face delayed merger as the EMRI orbit stalls by the tidal response of the cloud, until the cloud being almost fully dissipated. If the cloud depletes slower than the average time separation between EMRI mergers, it may lead to interesting interaction between multiple EMRI objects at comparable radii. Inclined EMRIs are also expected to migrate towards the black hole equatorial plane due to the tidal coupling and gravitational-wave dissipation. Floating stellar-mass back holes or stars around the nearby intermediate-mass black holes may generate strong gravitational-wave emission detectable by LISA.

Emission Line Metallicities From The Faint Infrared Grism Survey and VLT/MUSE

We derive direct measurement gas-phase metallicities of $7.4 < 12 + \log(O/H) < 8.4$ for 14 low-mass Emission Line Galaxies (ELGs) at $0.3 < z < 0.8$ identified in the Faint Infrared Grism Survey (FIGS). We use deep slitless G102 grism spectroscopy of the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (HUDF), dispersing light from all objects in the field at wavelengths between 0.85 and 1.15 microns. We run an automatic search routine on these spectra to robustly identify 71 emission line sources, using archival data from VLT/MUSE to measure additional lines and confirm redshifts. We identify 14 objects with $0.3 < z < 0.8$ with measurable O[III]$λ$4363 Å emission lines in matching VLT/MUSE spectra. For these galaxies, we derive direct electron-temperature gas-phase metallicities with a range of $7.4 < 12 + \log(O/H) < 8.4$. With matching stellar masses in the range of $10^{7.9} M_{\odot} < M_{\star} < 10^{10.4} M_{\odot}$, we construct a mass-metallicity (MZ) relation and find that the relation is offset to lower metallicities compared to metallicities derived from alternative methods (e.g.,$R_{23}$, O3N2, N2O2) and continuum selected samples. Using star formation rates (SFR) derived from the $Hα$ emission line, we calculate our galaxies' position on the Fundamental Metallicity Relation (FMR), where we also find an offset toward lower metallicities. This demonstrates that this emission-line-selected sample probes objects of low stellar masses but even lower metallicities than many comparable surveys. We detect a trend suggesting galaxies with higher Specific Star Formation (SSFR) are more likely to have lower metallicity. This could be due to cold accretion of metal-poor gas that drives star formation, or could be because outflows of metal-rich stellar winds and SNe ejecta are more common in galaxies with higher SSFR.
