AVIATE: Exploiting Translation Variants of Artifacts to Improve IR-based Traceability Recovery in Bilingual Software Projects

Traceability plays a vital role in facilitating various software development activities by establishing the traces between different types of artifacts (e.g., issues and commits in software repositories). Among the explorations for automated traceability recovery, the IR (Information Retrieval)-based approaches leverage textual similarity to measure the likelihood of traces between artifacts and show advantages in many scenarios. However, the globalization of software development has introduced new challenges, such as the possible multilingualism on the same concept (e.g., "ShuXing" vs. "attribute") in the artifact texts, thus significantly hampering the performance of IR-based approaches. Existing research has shown that machine translation can help address the term inconsistency in bilingual projects. However, the translation can also bring in synonymous terms that are not consistent with those in the bilingual projects (e.g., another translation of "ShuXing" as "property"). Therefore, we propose an enhancement strategy called AVIATE that exploits translation variants from different translators by utilizing the word pairs that appear simultaneously across the translation variants from different kinds artifacts (a.k.a. consensual biterms). We use these biterms to first enrich the artifact texts, and then to enhance the calculated IR values for improving IR-based traceability recovery for bilingual software projects. The experiments on 17 bilingual projects (involving English and 4 other languages) demonstrate that AVIATE significantly outperformed the IR-based approach with machine translation (the state-of-the-art in this field) with an average increase of 16.67 in Average Precision (31.43%) and 8.38 (11.22%) in Mean Average Precision, indicating its effectiveness in addressing the challenges of multilingual traceability recovery.

Quantum Implicit Neural Representations

Implicit neural representations have emerged as a powerful paradigm to represent signals such as images and sounds. This approach aims to utilize neural networks to parameterize the implicit function of the signal. However, when representing implicit functions, traditional neural networks such as ReLU-based multilayer perceptrons face challenges in accurately modeling high-frequency components of signals. Recent research has begun to explore the use of Fourier Neural Networks (FNNs) to overcome this limitation. In this paper, we propose Quantum Implicit Representation Network (QIREN), a novel quantum generalization of FNNs. Furthermore, through theoretical analysis, we demonstrate that QIREN possesses a quantum advantage over classical FNNs. Lastly, we conducted experiments in signal representation, image superresolution, and image generation tasks to show the superior performance of QIREN compared to state-of-the-art (SOTA) models. Our work not only incorporates quantum advantages into implicit neural representations but also uncovers a promising application direction for Quantum Neural Networks.

Codebook-Based Beam Tracking for Conformal ArrayEnabled UAV MmWave Networks

Millimeter wave (mmWave) communications can potentially meet the high data-rate requirements of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) networks. However, as the prerequisite of mmWave communications, the narrow directional beam tracking is very challenging because of the three-dimensional (3D) mobility and attitude variation of UAVs. Aiming to address the beam tracking difficulties, we propose to integrate the conformal array (CA) with the surface of each UAV, which enables the full spatial coverage and the agile beam tracking in highly dynamic UAV mmWave networks. More specifically, the key contributions of our work are three-fold. 1) A new mmWave beam tracking framework is established for the CA-enabled UAV mmWave network. 2) A specialized hierarchical codebook is constructed to drive the directional radiating element (DRE)-covered cylindrical conformal array (CCA), which contains both the angular beam pattern and the subarray pattern to fully utilize the potential of the CA. 3) A codebook-based multiuser beam tracking scheme is proposed, where the Gaussian process machine learning enabled UAV position/attitude predication is developed to improve the beam tracking efficiency in conjunction with the tracking-error aware adaptive beamwidth control. Simulation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed codebook-based beam tracking scheme in the CA-enabled UAV mmWave network, and demonstrate the advantages of CA over the conventional planner array in terms of spectrum efficiency and outage probability in the highly dynamic scenarios.

Covering a supermodular-like function in a mixed hypergraph

In this paper, we solve a conjecture by Szigeti in [Matroid-rooted packing of arborescences, submitted], which characterizes a mixed hypergraph $\mathcal{F}=(V, \mathcal{E} \cup \mathcal{A})$ having an orientation $\overrightarrow{\mathcal{E}}$ of $\mathcal{E}$ such that $e_{\overrightarrow{\mathcal{E}} \cup \mathcal{A}} (\mathcal{P}) \geq \sum_{X \in \mathcal{P}}h(X) -b(\cup \mathcal{P})$ for every subpartition $\mathcal{P}$ of $V$, where $h$ is an integer-valued, intersecting supermodular function on $V$ and $b$ a submodular function on $V$. As a corollary, another conjecture in the same paper is confirmed, which characterizes a mixed hypergraph having a packing of mixed hyperarborescences such that their roots form a basis in a given matroid, each vertex $v$ belongs to exactly $k$ of them and is the root of at least $f(v)$ and at most $g(v)$ of them.

TRIAD: Automated Traceability Recovery based on Biterm-enhanced Deduction of Transitive Links among Artifacts

Traceability allows stakeholders to extract and comprehend the trace links among software artifacts introduced across the software life cycle, to provide significant support for software engineering tasks. Despite its proven benefits, software traceability is challenging to recover and maintain manually. Hence, plenty of approaches for automated traceability have been proposed. Most rely on textual similarities among software artifacts, such as those based on Information Retrieval (IR). However, artifacts in different abstraction levels usually have different textual descriptions, which can greatly hinder the performance of IR-based approaches (e.g., a requirement in natural language may have a small textual similarity to a Java class). In this work, we leverage the consensual biterms and transitive relationships (i.e., inner- and outer-transitive links) based on intermediate artifacts to improve IR-based traceability recovery. We first extract and filter biterms from all source, intermediate, and target artifacts. We then use the consensual biterms from the intermediate artifacts to extend the biterms of both source and target artifacts, and finally deduce outer and inner-transitive links to adjust text similarities between source and target artifacts. We conducted a comprehensive empirical evaluation based on five systems widely used in other literature to show that our approach can outperform four state-of-the-art approaches, and how its performance is affected by different conditions of source, intermediate, and target artifacts. The results indicate that our approach can outperform baseline approaches in AP over 15% and MAP over 10% on average.

Prismatic crystals over the de Rham period sheaf

Let $\mathcal{O}_K$ be a mixed characteristic complete discrete valuation ring with perfect residue field. We study $\mathbb{B}_\mathrm{dR}^+$-crystals on the (log-) prismatic site of $\mathcal{O}_K$, which are crystals defined over the de Rham period sheaf. We first classify these crystals using certain log connections. By constructing a Sen--Fontaine theory for $\mathbf{B}_{\mathrm{dR}}^+$-representations over a Kummer tower, we further classify these crystals by (log-) nearly de Rham representations. In addition, we compare (log-) prismatic cohomology of these crystals with the corresponding Sen--Fontaine cohomology and Galois cohomology.

Hodge--Tate prismatic crystals and Sen theory

We study Hodge-Tate crystals on the absolute (log-) prismatic site of $\mathcal{O}_K$, where $\mathcal{O}_K$ is a mixed characteristic complete discrete valuation ring with perfect residue field. We first classify Hodge-Tate crystals by $\mathcal{O}_K$-modules equipped with certain small endomorphisms. We then construct Sen theory over a non-Galois Kummer tower, and use it to classify rational Hodge-Tate crystals by (log-) nearly Hodge-Tate representations. Various cohomology comparison and vanishing results are proved along the way.

Hodge-Tate prismatic crystals and Sen theory

Let $K$ be a mixed characteristic complete discrete valuation field with perfect residue field, and let $K_\infty/K$ be a Kummer tower extension by adjoining a compatible system of $p$-power roots of a chosen uniformizer. We use this Kummer tower to reconstruct Sen theory which classically is obtained using the cyclotomic tower. Using this Sen theory over the Kummer tower, we prove a conjecture of Min-Wang which predicts that Hodge-Tate prismatic crystals are determined by the Sen operator; this implies that the category of (rational) Hodge-Tate prismatic crystals is equivalent to the category of nearly Hodge-Tate representations.

Scalable Multi-task Semantic Communication System with Feature Importance Ranking

Semantic communications are expected to be an innovative solution to the emerging intelligent applications in the era of connected intelligence. In this paper, a novel scalable multitask semantic communication system with feature importance ranking (SMSC-FIR) is explored. Firstly, the multi-task correlations are investigated by a joint semantic encoder to extract relevant features. Then, a new scalable coding method is proposed based on feature importance ranking, which dynamically adjusts the coding rate and guarantees that important features for semantic tasks are transmitted with higher priority. Simulation results show that SMSC-FIR achieves performance gain w.r.t. individual intelligent tasks, especially in the low SNR regime.

Fontaine-Laffaille modules and strongly divisible modules

In this note, we study the relation between Fontaine-Laffaille modules and strongly divisible modules, without assuming the main theorem of Fontaine-Laffaille (but we need to assume the main results concerning strongly divisible modules). This in particular gives a new proof for the main theorem of Fontaine-Laffaille (for $p>2$).

Using Consensual Biterms from Text Structures of Requirements and Code to Improve IR-Based Traceability Recovery

Traceability approves trace links among software artifacts based on whether two artifacts are related by system functionalities. The traces are valuable for software development, but are difficult to obtain manually. To cope with the costly and fallible manual recovery, automated approaches are proposed to recover traces through textual similarities among software artifacts, such as those based on Information Retrieval (IR). However, the low quality & quantity of artifact texts negatively impact the calculated IR values, thus greatly hindering the performance of IR-based approaches. In this study, we propose to extract co-occurred word pairs from the text structures of both requirements and code (i.e., consensual biterms) to improve IR-based traceability recovery. We first collect a set of biterms based on the part-of-speech of requirement texts, and then filter them through the code texts. We then use these consensual biterms to both enrich the input corpus for IR techniques and enhance the calculations of IR values. A nine-system-based evaluation shows that in general, when solely used to enhance IR techniques, our approach can outperform pure IR-based approaches and another baseline by 21.9% & 21.8% in AP, and 9.3% & 7.2% in MAP, respectively. Moreover, when used to collaborate with another enhancing strategy from different perspectives, it can outperform this baseline by 5.9% in AP and 4.8% in MAP.

Multi-Head Online Learning for Delayed Feedback Modeling

In online advertising, it is highly important to predict the probability and the value of a conversion (e.g., a purchase). It not only impacts user experience by showing relevant ads, but also affects ROI of advertisers and revenue of marketplaces. Unlike clicks, which often occur within minutes after impressions, conversions are expected to happen over a long period of time (e.g., 30 days for online shopping). It creates a challenge, as the true labels are only available after the long delays. Either inaccurate labels (partial conversions) are used, or models are trained on stale data (e.g., from 30 days ago). The problem is more eminent in online learning, which focuses on the live performance on the latest data. In this paper, a novel solution is presented to address this challenge using multi-head modeling. Unlike traditional methods, it directly quantizes conversions into multiple windows, such as day 1, day 2, day 3-7, and day 8-30. A sub-model is trained specifically on conversions within each window. Label freshness is maximally preserved in early models (e.g., day 1 and day 2), while late conversions are accurately utilized in models with longer delays (e.g., day 8-30). It is shown to greatly exceed the performance of known methods in online learning experiments for both conversion rate (CVR) and value per click (VPC) predictions. Lastly, as a general method for delayed feedback modeling, it can be combined with any advanced ML techniques to further improve the performance.

Digraph analogues for the Nine Dragon Tree Conjecture

The fractional arboricity of a digraph $D$, denoted by $γ(D)$, is defined as $γ(D)= \max_{H \subseteq D, |V(H)| >1} \frac {|A(H)|} {|V(H)|-1}$. Frank in [Covering branching, Acta Scientiarum Mathematicarum (Szeged) 41 (1979), 77-81] proved that a digraph $D$ decomposes into $k$ branchings, if and only if $Δ^{-}(D) \leq k$ and $γ(D) \leq k$. In this paper, we study digraph analogues for the Nine Dragon Tree Conjecture. We conjecture that, for positive integers $k$ and $d$, if $D$ is a digraph with $γ(D) \leq k + \frac{d-k}{d+1}$ and $Δ^{-}(D) \leq k+1$, then $D$ decomposes into $k + 1$ branchings $B_{1}, \ldots, B_{k}, B_{k+1}$ with $Δ^{+}(B_{k+1}) \leq d$. This conjecture, if true, is a refinement of Frank's characterization. A series of acyclic bipartite digraphs is also presented to show the bound of $γ(D)$ given in the conjecture is best possible. We prove our conjecture for the cases $d \leq k$. As more evidence to support our conjecture, we prove that if $D$ is a digraph with the maximum average degree $mad(D)$ $\leq$ $2k + \frac{2(d-k)}{d+1}$ and $Δ^{-}(D) \leq k+1$, then $D$ decomposes into $k + 1$ pseudo-branchings $C_{1}, \ldots, C_{k}, C_{k+1}$ with $Δ^{+}(C_{k+1}) \leq d$.

Exploiting the Unique Expression for Improved Sentiment Analysis in Software Engineering Text

Sentiment analysis on software engineering (SE) texts has been widely used in the SE research, such as evaluating app reviews or analyzing developers sentiments in commit messages. To better support the use of automated sentiment analysis for SE tasks, researchers built an SE-domain-specified sentiment dictionary to further improve the accuracy of the results. Unfortunately, recent work reported that current mainstream tools for sentiment analysis still cannot provide reliable results when analyzing the sentiments in SE texts. We suggest that the reason for this situation is because the way of expressing sentiments in SE texts is largely different from the way in social network or movie comments. In this paper, we propose to improve sentiment analysis in SE texts by using sentence structures, a different perspective from building a domain dictionary. Specifically, we use sentence structures to first identify whether the author is expressing her sentiment in a given clause of an SE text, and to further adjust the calculation of sentiments which are confirmed in the clause. An empirical evaluation based on four different datasets shows that our approach can outperform two dictionary-based baseline approaches, and is more generalizable compared to a learning-based baseline approach.

Integral $p$-adic Hodge theory in the imperfect residue field case

Let $K$ be a mixed characteristic complete discrete valuation field with residue field admitting a finite $p$-basis, and let $G_K$ be the Galois group. We first classify semi-stable representations of $G_K$ by weakly admissible filtered $(φ,N)$-modules with connections. We then construct a fully faithful functor from the category of \emph{integral} semi-stable representations of $G_K$ to the category of Breuil-Kisin $G_K$-modules. Using the integral theory, we classify $p$-divisible groups over the ring of integers of $K$ by minuscule Breuil-Kisin modules with connections.

Packing of spanning mixed arborescences

In this paper, we characterize a mixed graph $F$ which contains $k$ edge and arc disjoint spanning mixed arborescences $F_{1}, \ldots, F_{k}$, such that for each $v \in V(F)$, the cardinality of $\{i \in [k]: v \text{ is the root of } F_{i}\}$ lies in some prescribed interval. This generalizes both Nash-Williams and Tutte's theorem on spanning tree packing for undirected graphs and the previous characterization on digraphs which was given by Cai [in: Arc-disjoint arborescences of digraphs, J. Graph Theory 7(2) (1983), 235-240] and Frank [in: On disjoint trees and arborescences, Algebraic Methods in Graph Theory, Colloquia Mathematica Soc. J. Bolyai, Vol. 25 (North-Holland, Amsterdam) (1978), 159-169].

Packing of maximal independent mixed arborescences

Király in [On maximal independent arborescence packing, SIAM J. Discrete. Math. 30 (4) (2016), 2107-2114] solved the following packing problem: Given a digraph $D = (V, A)$, a matroid $M$ on a set $S = \{s_{1}, \ldots,s_{k} \}$ along with a map $π: S \rightarrow V$, find $k$ arc-disjoint maximal arborescences $T_{1}, \ldots ,T_{k}$ with roots $π(s_{1}), \ldots ,π(s_{k})$, such that, for any $v \in V$, the set $\{s_{i} : v \in V(T_{i})\}$ is independent and its rank reaches the theoretical maximum. In this paper, we give a new characterization for packing of maximal independent mixed arborescences under matroid constraints. This new characterization is simplified to the form of finding a supermodular function that should be covered by an orientation of each strong component of a matroid-based rooted mixed graph. Our proofs come along with a polynomial-time algorithm. Note that our new characterization extends Király's result to mixed graphs, this answers a question that has already attracted some attentions.

Machine Learning Empowered Beam Management for Intelligent Reflecting Surface Assisted MmWave Networks

Recently, intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) assisted mmWave networks are emerging, which bear the potential to address the blockage issue of the millimeter wave (mmWave) communication in a more cost-effective way. In particular, IRS is built by passive and programmable electromagnetic elements that can manipulate the mmWave propagation channel into a more favorable condition that is free of blockage via judicious joint BS-IRS transmission design. However, the coexistence of IRSs and mmWave BSs complicates the network architecture, and thus poses great challenges for efficient beam management (BM) that is one critical prerequisite for high performance mmWave networks. In this paper, we systematically evaluate the key issues and challenges of BM for IRS-assisted mmWave networks to bring insights into the future network design. Specifically, we carefully classify and discuss the extensibility and limitations of the existing BM of conventional mmWave towards the IRS-assisted new paradigm. Moreover, we propose a novel machine learning empowered BM framework for IRS-assisted networks with representative showcases, which processes environmental and mobility awareness to achieve highly efficient BM with significantly reduced system overhead. Finally, some interesting future directions are also suggested to inspire further researches.
