Observation of surface superconductivity in a three-dimensional Dirac material

Superconductivity becomes more interesting when it encounters dimensional constraint or topology, because it is of importance for exploring exotic quantum phenomena or developing superconducting electronics. Here we report the coexistence of naturally formed surface superconducting state and three-dimensional topological Dirac state in single crystals of BaMg$_2$Bi$_2$. The electronic structure obtained from the first-principles calculations demonstrates that BaMg$_2$Bi$_2$ is an ideal Dirac material, in which the Dirac point is very close to the Fermi level and no other energy band crosses the Fermi level. Superconductivity up to 4.77 K can be observed under ambient pressure in the measurements of resistivity. The angle dependent magnetoresistance reveals the two-dimensional characteristic of superconductivity, indicating that superconductivity occurs on the surface of the sample and is absent in the bulk state. Our study not only provides BaMg$_2$Bi$_2$ as a suitable platform to study the interplay between superconductivity and topological Dirac state, but also indicates that MgBi-based materials may be a promising system for exploring new superconductors.

Efficient Video Instance Segmentation via Tracklet Query and Proposal

Video Instance Segmentation (VIS) aims to simultaneously classify, segment, and track multiple object instances in videos. Recent clip-level VIS takes a short video clip as input each time showing stronger performance than frame-level VIS (tracking-by-segmentation), as more temporal context from multiple frames is utilized. Yet, most clip-level methods are neither end-to-end learnable nor real-time. These limitations are addressed by the recent VIS transformer (VisTR) which performs VIS end-to-end within a clip. However, VisTR suffers from long training time due to its frame-wise dense attention. In addition, VisTR is not fully end-to-end learnable in multiple video clips as it requires a hand-crafted data association to link instance tracklets between successive clips. This paper proposes EfficientVIS, a fully end-to-end framework with efficient training and inference. At the core are tracklet query and tracklet proposal that associate and segment regions-of-interest (RoIs) across space and time by an iterative query-video interaction. We further propose a correspondence learning that makes tracklets linking between clips end-to-end learnable. Compared to VisTR, EfficientVIS requires 15x fewer training epochs while achieving state-of-the-art accuracy on the YouTube-VIS benchmark. Meanwhile, our method enables whole video instance segmentation in a single end-to-end pass without data association at all.

A consistent second-order hydrodynamic model in the time domain for floating structures with large horizontal motions

Floating offshore structures often exhibit low-frequency oscillatory motions in the horizontal plane, with amplitudes in the same order as their characteristic dimensions and larger than the corresponding wave-frequency responses, making the traditional formulations in an inertial coordinate system inconsistent and less applicable. To address this issue, we extend and explore an alternative formulation completely based on a non-inertial body-fixed coordinate system. Unlike the traditional seakeeping models, this formulation consistently allows for large-amplitude horizontal motions. A numerical model based on a higher-order boundary element is applied to solve the resulting boundary-value problems in the time domain. A recently developed new set of explicit time-integration methods, which do not necessitate the use of upwind schemes for spatial derivatives, are adopted to deal with the convective-type free-surface conditions. To suppress the weak saw-tooth instabilities on the free surface in time marching, we also present novel low-pass filters based on optimized weighted-least-squares, which are in principle applicable for both structured and unstructured meshes. The presented schemes for the convection equation and the low-pass filter are also relevant for other engineering fields dealing with similar mathematical problems. For ship seakeeping and added resistance analyses, we show that the present computational model does not need to use soft-springs for surge and sway, in contrast to the traditional models. For a floating monopile, the importance of consistently taking into account the effects of large horizontal motions is demonstrated considering the bi-chromatic incident waves. The present model is considered as a complete 2nd order wave-load model, as all the 2nd order wave loads, including the sum-frequency and difference-frequency components, are solved simultaneously.

Accurate and efficient hydrodynamic analysis of structures with sharp edges by the Extended Finite Element Method (XFEM): 2D studies

Achieving accurate numerical results of hydrodynamic loads based on the potential-flow theory is very challenging for structures with sharp edges, due to the singular behavior of the local-flow velocities. In this paper, we introduce the Extended Finite Element Method (XFEM) to solve fluid-structure interaction problems involving sharp edges on structures. Four different FEM solvers, including conventional linear and quadratic FEMs as well as their corresponding XFEM versions with local enrichment by singular basis functions at sharp edges, are implemented and compared. To demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of the XFEMs, a thin flat plate in an infinite fluid domain and a forced heaving rectangle at the free surface, both in two dimensions, will be studied. For the flat plate, the mesh convergence studies are carried out for both the velocity potential in the fluid domain and the added mass, and the XFEMs show apparent advantages thanks to their local enhancement at the sharp edges. Three different enrichment strategies are also compared, and suggestions will be made for the practical implementation of the XFEM. For the forced heaving rectangle, the linear and 2nd order mean wave loads are studied. Our results confirm the previous conclusion in the literature that it is not difficult for a conventional numerical model to obtain convergent results for added mass and damping coefficients. However, when the 2nd order mean wave loads requiring the computation of velocity components are calculated via direct pressure integration, it takes a tremendously large number of elements for the conventional FEMs to get convergent results. On the contrary, the numerical results of XFEMs converge rapidly even with very coarse meshes, especially for the quadratic XFEM.

Robust 3D Hand Pose Estimation in Single Depth Images: from Single-View CNN to Multi-View CNNs

Articulated hand pose estimation plays an important role in human-computer interaction. Despite the recent progress, the accuracy of existing methods is still not satisfactory, partially due to the difficulty of embedded high-dimensional and non-linear regression problem. Different from the existing discriminative methods that regress for the hand pose with a single depth image, we propose to first project the query depth image onto three orthogonal planes and utilize these multi-view projections to regress for 2D heat-maps which estimate the joint positions on each plane. These multi-view heat-maps are then fused to produce final 3D hand pose estimation with learned pose priors. Experiments show that the proposed method largely outperforms state-of-the-art on a challenging dataset. Moreover, a cross-dataset experiment also demonstrates the good generalization ability of the proposed method.

Observation of the chiral anomaly induced negative magneto-resistance in 3D Weyl semi-metal TaAs

Weyl semi-metal is the three dimensional analog of graphene. According to the quantum field theory, the appearance of Weyl points near the Fermi level will cause novel transport phenomena related to chiral anomaly. In the present paper, we report the first experimental evidence for the long-anticipated negative magneto-resistance generated by the chiral anomaly in a newly predicted time-reversal invariant Weyl semi-metal material TaAs. Clear Shubnikov de Haas oscillations (SdH) have been detected starting from very weak magnetic field. Analysis of the SdH peaks gives the Berry phase accumulated along the cyclotron orbits to be π, indicating the existence of Weyl points.
