Gaussian Mixture Model Based Distributionally Robust Optimal Power Flow With CVaR Constraints

This paper proposes a distributionally robust optimal power flow (OPF) model for transmission grids with wind power generation. The model uses the conditional value-at-risk (CVaR) constraints to control the reserve and branch flow limit violations caused by wind power forecast errors. Meanwhile, the Gaussian mixture model (GMM) is integrated into the CVaR constraints to guard against the non-Gaussian forecast error distributions. Unlike the previous studies considering the GMM with fixed parameters, this paper allows the GMM parameters to be variable within some credible regions and develops a data-driven GMM-based ambiguity set to achieve the distributional robustness. Also, rather than using the traditional sample-based approximation of CVaR with high computational burden, this paper designs a scalable cutting-plane algorithm to handle the distributionally robust CVaR constraints. Case studies on the IEEE 2736-bus system show the effectiveness and scalability of the proposed OPF model.

Polarisation optics for biomedical and clinical applications: a review

Many polarisation techniques have been harnessed for decades in biological and clinical research, each based upon measurement of the vectorial properties of light or the vectorial transformations imposed on light by objects. Various advanced vector measurement/sensing techniques, physical interpretation methods, and approaches to analyse biomedically relevant information have been developed and harnessed. In this review, we focus mainly on summarizing methodologies and applications related to tissue polarimetry, with an emphasis on the adoption of the Stokes-Mueller formalism. Several recent breakthroughs, development trends, and potential multi-modal uses in conjunction with other techniques are also presented. The primary goal of the review is to give the reader a general overview in the use of vectorial information that can be obtained by polarisation optics for applications in biomedical and clinical research.

Revealing complex optical phenomena through vectorial metrics

Advances in vectorial polarisation-resolved imaging are bringing new capabilities to applications ranging from fundamental physics through to clinical diagnosis. Imaging polarimetry requires determination of the Mueller matrix (MM) at every point, providing a complete description of an object's vectorial properties. Despite forming a comprehensive representation, the MM does not usually provide easily-interpretable information about the object's internal structure. Certain simpler vectorial metrics are derived from subsets of the MM elements. These metrics permit extraction of signatures that provide direct indicators of hidden optical properties of complex systems, while featuring an intriguing asymmetry about what information can or cannot be inferred via these metrics. We harness such characteristics to reveal the spin-Hall effect of light, infer microscopic structure within laser-written photonic waveguides, and conduct rapid pathological diagnosis through analysis of healthy and cancerous tissue. This provides new insight for the broader usage of such asymmetric inferred vectorial information.

Sparse Channel Reconstruction With Nonconvex Regularizer via DC Programming for Massive MIMO Systems

Sparse channel estimation for massive multiple-input multiple-output systems has drawn much attention in recent years. The required pilots are substantially reduced when the sparse channel state vectors can be reconstructed from a few numbers of measurements. A popular approach for sparse reconstruction is to solve the least-squares problem with a convex regularization. However, the convex regularizer is either too loose to force sparsity or lead to biased estimation. In this paper, the sparse channel reconstruction is solved by minimizing the least-squares objective with a nonconvex regularizer, which can exactly express the sparsity constraint and avoid introducing serious bias in the solution. A novel algorithm is proposed for solving the resulting nonconvex optimization via the difference of convex functions programming and the gradient projection descent. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm is fast and accurate, and it outperforms the existing sparse recovery algorithms in terms of reconstruction errors.

Room-temperature bipolar valleytronic transistor in MoS2/WSe2 heterostructures

Valley degree of freedom in the 2D semiconductor is a promising platform for the next generation optoelectronics. Electrons in different valleys can have opposite Berry curvature, leading to the valley Hall effect (VHE). However, VHE without the plasmonic structure's assistance has only been reported in cryogenic temperature, limiting its practical application. Here, we report the observation of VHE at room temperature in the MoS2/WSe2 heterostructures. We also uncover that both the magnitude and the polarity of the VHE in the 2D heterostructure is gate tunable. We attribute this to the opposite VHE contribution from the electron and hole in different layers. These results indicate the bipolar transport nature of our valleytronic transistor. Utilizing this gate tunability, we demonstrate a bipolar valleytronic transistor. Our results can be used to improve the ON/OFF ratio of the valleytronic transistor and to realize more versatile valleytronics logic circuits.

Circular photogalvanic effect in 2D van der Waals heterostructure

Utilizing spin or valley degree of freedom is one of the promising approaches to realize more energy-efficient information processing. In the 2D transition metal dichalcogenide, the spin/valley current can be generated by utilizing the circular photogalvanic effect (CPGE), i.e., the generation of photocurrent by a circularly polarized light. Here we show that an in-plane electric field at MoS2/WSe2 heterostructure-electrode boundary results in an electrically tunable circular photogalvanic effect (CPGE) under optical excitation with normal incidence. The observed CPGE can be explained by the valence band shift due to the in-plane electric field and different effective relaxation times between hole and electron combined with the valley optical selection rule. Furthermore, we show that the CPGE can be controlled by changing the Fermi level using an out-of-plane electric field. Such phenomena persist even at room temperature. This finding may facilitate the utilization of 2D heterostructure as an opto-valleytronics and opto-spintronics device platform.

Complex vectorial optics through gradient index lens cascades

Graded index (GRIN) lenses are commonly used for compact imaging systems. It is not widely appreciated that the ion-exchange process that creates the rotationally symmetric GRIN lens index profile also causes a symmetric birefringence variation. This property is usually considered a nuisance, such that manufacturing processes are optimized to keep it to a minimum. Here, rather than avoiding this birefringence, we understand and harness it by using GRIN lenses in cascade with other optical components to enable extra functionality in commonplace GRIN lens systems. We show how birefringence in the GRIN cascades can generate vector vortex beams and foci, and how it can be used advantageously to improve axial resolution. Through using the birefringence for analysis, we show that the GRIN cascades form the basis of a new single-shot Mueller matrix polarimeter with potential for endoscopic label-free cancer diagnostics. The versatility of these cascades opens up new technological directions.

Underlying topological Dirac nodal line mechanism of anomalously large electron-phonon coupling strength on Be (0001) surface

Beryllium was recently discovered to harbor a Dirac nodal line (DNL) in its bulk phase and the DNL-induced non-trivial drumhead-like surface states (DNSSs) on its (0001) surface, rationalizing several already-existing historic puzzles [Phys. Rev. Lett., \textbf{117}, 096401 (2016)]. However, to date the underlying mechanism, as to why its (0001) surface exhibits an anomalously large electron-phonon coupling effect ($λ_{e-ph}^s$ $\approx$ 1.0), remains unresolved. Here, by means of first-principles calculations we have evidenced that the coupling of the DNSSs with the phononic states mainly contributes to its novel surface \emph{e-ph} enhancement. Besides that the experimentally observed $λ_{e-ph}^s$ and the main Eliashberg coupling function (ECF) peaks have been reproduced well, we have decomposed the ECF, $α^{2}$$F$(\emph{k},\textbf{\emph{q}};\emph{v}), and the \emph{e-ph} coupling strength $λ(\emph{k},\textbf{\emph{q}};\emph{v})$ as a function of each electron momentum (\emph{k}), each phonon momentum (\textbf{\emph{q}}) and each phonon mode ($v$), evidencing the robust connection between the DNSSs and both $α^{2}$$F$(\emph{k},\textbf{\emph{q}};\emph{v}) and $λ(\emph{k},\textbf{\emph{q}};\emph{v})$. The results reveal the strong \emph{e-ph} coupling between the DNSSs and the phonon modes, which contributes over 80$\%$ of the $λ_{e-ph}^s$ coefficient on the Be (0001) surface. It highlights that the anomalously large \emph{e-ph} coefficient on the Be (0001) surface can be attributed to the presence of its DNL-induced DNSSs, clarifying the long-term debated mechanism.

Memetic EDA-Based Approaches to Comprehensive Quality-Aware Automated Semantic Web Service Composition

Comprehensive quality-aware automated semantic web service composition is an NP-hard problem, where service composition workflows are unknown, and comprehensive quality, i.e., Quality of services (QoS) and Quality of semantic matchmaking (QoSM) are simultaneously optimized. The objective of this problem is to find a solution with optimized or near-optimized overall QoS and QoSM within polynomial time over a service request. In this paper, we proposed novel memetic EDA-based approaches to tackle this problem. The proposed method investigates the effectiveness of several neighborhood structures of composite services by proposing domain-dependent local search operators. Apart from that, a joint strategy of the local search procedure is proposed to integrate with a modified EDA to reduce the overall computation time of our memetic approach. To better demonstrate the effectiveness and scalability of our approach, we create a more challenging, augmented version of the service composition benchmark based on WSC-08 \cite{bansal2008wsc} and WSC-09 \cite{kona2009wsc}. Experimental results on this benchmark show that one of our proposed memetic EDA-based approach (i.e., MEEDA-LOP) significantly outperforms existing state-of-the-art algorithms.

Minimal Lagrangian submanifolds of the complex hyperquadric

We introduce a structural approach to study Lagrangian submanifolds of the complex hyperquadric in arbitrary dimension by using its family of non-integrable almost product structures. In particular, we define local angle functions encoding the geometry of the Lagrangian submanifold at hand. We prove that these functions are constant in the special case that the Lagrangian immersion is the Gauss map of an isoparametric hypersurface of a sphere and give the relation with the constant principal curvatures of the hypersurface. We also use our techniques to classify all minimal Lagrangian submanifolds of the complex hyperquadric which have constant sectional curvatures and all minimal Lagrangian submanifolds for which all, respectively all but one, local angle functions coincide.

Total Positivity of A Kind of Generalized Toric-Bernstein Basis

The normalized totally positive bases are widely used in many fields.Based on the generalized Vandermonde determinant, the normalized total positivity of a kind of generalized toric-Bernstein basis is proved, which is defined on a set of real points. By this result, the progressive iterative approximation property of the generalized toric-Bézier curve is obtained.

Making the guided wave propagate unidirectional in periodic dielectric waveguide

Unidirectional waves are the waves propagating only in one direction and prohibited in opposite direction. This kind of waves can be surface waves realized by topological edge state or bulk waves in the media with time reversal and space inversion symmetry broken. Here, we introduce unidirectional waveguide modes in the periodic dielectric chain comprised of gyromagnetic rods. In this modes, the waves in the waveguide propagates unidirectional, but can be converted into bi-directional waves by changing the arrangement of rods. We show unidirectional guided waves result from the time-mirror symmetry broken of the chain. Experiments confirm the theoretical results of waveguide modes. A new vortex wave generator based on the unidirectional guided wave is demonstrated theoretically. Our work opens a new avenue for manipulating the electromagnetic wave in a simple and flexible way, and provides a new possibility for novel devices.

Evolutionary Multitasking for Semantic Web Service Composition

Web services are basic functions of a software system to support the concept of service-oriented architecture. They are often composed together to provide added values, known as web service composition. Researchers often employ Evolutionary Computation techniques to efficiently construct composite services with near-optimized functional quality (i.e., Quality of Semantic Matchmaking) or non-functional quality (i.e., Quality of Service) or both due to the complexity of this problem. With a significant increase in service composition requests, many composition requests have similar input and output requirements but may vary due to different preferences from different user segments. This problem is often treated as a multi-objective service composition so as to cope with different preferences from different user segments simultaneously. Without taking a multi-objective approach that gives rise to a solution selection challenge, we perceive multiple similar service composition requests as jointly forming an evolutionary multi-tasking problem in this work. We propose an effective permutation-based evolutionary multi-tasking approach that can simultaneously generate a set of solutions, with one for each service request. We also introduce a neighborhood structure over multiple tasks to allow newly evolved solutions to be evaluated on related tasks. Our proposed method can perform better at the cost of only a fraction of time, compared to one state-of-art single-tasking EC-based method. We also found that the use of the proper neighborhood structure can enhance the effectiveness of our approach.

Characterizations of umbilic hypersurfaces in warped product manifolds

We consider closed orientable hypersurfaces in a wide class of warped product manifolds, which include space forms, deSitter-Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordström manifolds. By using a new integral formula or Brendle's Heintze-Karcher type inequality, we present some new characterizations of umbilic hypersurfaces. These results can be viewed as generalizations of the classical Jellet-Liebmann theorem and the Alexandrov theorem in Euclidean space.

Composing Distributed Data-intensive Web Services Using a Flexible Memetic Algorithm

Web Service Composition (WSC) is a particularly promising application of Web services, where multiple individual services with specific functionalities are composed to accomplish a more complex task, which must fulfil functional requirements and optimise Quality of Service (QoS) attributes, simultaneously. Additionally, large quantities of data, produced by technological advances, need to be exchanged between services. Data-intensive Web services, which manipulate and deal with those data, are of great interest to implement data-intensive processes, such as distributed Data-intensive Web Service Composition (DWSC). Researchers have proposed Evolutionary Computing (EC) fully-automated WSC techniques that meet all the above factors. Some of these works employed Memetic Algorithms (MAs) to enhance the performance of EC through increasing its exploitation ability of in searching neighbourhood area of a solution. However, those works are not efficient or effective. This paper proposes an MA-based approach to solving the problem of distributed DWSC in an effective and efficient manner. In particular, we develop an MA that hybridises EC with a flexible local search technique incorporating distance of services. An evaluation using benchmark datasets is carried out, comparing existing state-of-the-art methods. Results show that our proposed method has the highest quality and an acceptable execution time overall.

Secrecy Beamforming for SWIPT MISO Heterogeneous Cellular Networks

In this paper, we consider the secure transmission design for a multiple-input single-output Femtocell overlaid with a Macrocell in co-channel deployment. The Femtocell base station sends confidential messages to information receiving Femtocell users (FUs) and energy signals to energy receiving (ER) FUs while limiting the interference to Macrocell users (MUs). The ER FUs have the potential to wiretap the confidential messages. By taking fairness into account, we propose a sum logarithmic secrecy rate maximization beamforming design problem under the interference constraints for MUs and energy harvesting (EH) constraints for ER FUs. The formulated design problem is nontrivial to solve due to the nonconvexity which lies in the objective and the constraints. To tackle the design problem, a semidefinite relaxation and successive convex approximation based algorithm is proposed. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed beamforming design.
