Self-similar solutions of curvature flows in warped products

In this paper we study self-similar solutions in warped products satisfying $F-\mathcal{F}=\bar{g}(λ(r)\partial_{r},ν)$, where $\mathcal{F}$ is a nonnegative constant and $F$ is in a class of general curvature functions including powers of mean curvature and Gauss curvature. We show that slices are the only closed strictly convex self-similar solutions in the hemisphere for such $F$. We also obtain a similar uniqueness result in hyperbolic space $\mathbb{H}^{3}$ for Gauss curvature $F$ and $\mathcal{F}\geq 1$.

Three-component bosons in TiS, ZrSe and HfTe

Topological semimetals with several types of three-dimensional (3D) fermion of electrons, such as Dirac fermions, Weyl fermions, Dirac nodal lines and triply degenerate nodal points have been theoretically predicted and then experimentally discovered in the electronic structures of a series of solid crystals. In analogy of various typical fermions, topological mechanical states with two type of bosons, Dirac and Weyl bosons, were also experimentally reported in some macroscopic systems of kHz frequency and with a type of doubly-Weyl phonons in atomic vibrational framework of THz frequency of solid crystal was also recently predicted. However, to date no triply degenerate nodal point of phonon beyond the conventional Dirac, Weyl and doubly-Weyl phonons has been reported. Here, through first-principles calculations, we have reported on the prediction that the WC-type TiS, ZrSe, and HfTe commonly host the unique triply degenerate nodal point of phonon in THz frequency due to the occurrence of the phonon band inversion between the doubly degenerate planar vibrational mode and the singlet vertical vibrational mode at the boundary A point of the bulk Brillouin zone. Quasiparticle excitations near this triply degenerate nodal point of phonons are three-component bosons, different from the known classifications. The underlying mechanism can be attributed to the leading role of the comparable atomic masses of constituent elements in compounds in competition with the interatomic interaction. Additionally, the electronic structures in their bulk crystals exhibit the coexisted triply degenerate nodal point and Weyl fermions. The novel coexistence of three-component bosons, three-component fermions and Weyl fermions in these materials thus suggest an enriched platform for studying the interplay between different types of fermions and bosons.

Topological nodal line states and a potential catalyst of hydrogen evolution in the TiSi family

Topological nodal line (DNL) semimetals, formed by a closed loop of the inverted bands in the bulk, result in the nearly flat drumhead-like surface states with a high electronic density near the Fermi level. The high catalytic active sites associated with the high electronic densities, the good carrier mobility, and the proper thermodynamic stabilities with $ΔG_{H^*}$$\approx$0 are currently the prerequisites to seek the alternative candidates to precious platinum for catalyzing electrochemical hydrogen (HER) production from water. Within this context, it is natural to consider whether or not the DNLs are a good candidate for the HER because its non-trivial surface states provide a robust platform to activate possibly chemical reactions. Here, through first-principles calculations we reported on a new DNL TiSi-type family with a closed Dirac nodal line consisting of the linear band crossings in the $k_y$ = 0 plane. The hydrogen adsorption on the (010) and (110) surfaces yields the $ΔG_{H^*}$ to be almost zero. The topological charge carries have been revealed to participate in this HER. The results are highlighting that TiSi not only is a promising catalyst for the HER but also paves a new routine to design topological quantum catalyst utilizing the topological DNL-induced surface bands as active sites, rather than edge sites-, vacancy-, dopant-, strain-, or heterostructure-created active sites.

Energy functional for Lagrangian tori in $\mathbb{C}P^2$

In this paper we study Lagrangian tori in ${\mathbb C}P^2$. A two-dimensional periodic Schrödinger operator is associated with every Lagrangian torus in ${\mathbb C}P^2$. We introduce an energy functional for tori as an integral of the potential of the Schrödinger operators, which has a natural geometrical meaning. We study the energy functional on two families of Lagrangian tori and propose a conjecture that the minimum of the functional is achieved by the Clifford torus. We also study deformations of minimal Lagrangian tori. In particular we show that if the deformation preserves a conformal type of the torus, then it also preserves the area of the torus. Thus it follows that deformations generated by Novikov-Veselov equations preserve the area of minimal Lagrangian tori.

Uniqueness of closed self-similar solutions to $σ_k^α$-curvature flow

By adapting the test functions introduced by Choi-Daskaspoulos \cite{c-d} and Brendle-Choi-Daskaspoulos \cite{b-c-d} and exploring properties of the $k$-th elementary symmetric functions $σ_{k}$ intensively, we show that for any fixed $k$ with $1\leq k\leq n-1$, any strictly convex closed hypersurface in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ satisfying $σ_{k}^α=\langle X,ν\rangle$, with $α\geq \frac{1}{k}$, must be a round sphere. In fact, we prove a uniqueness result for any strictly convex closed hypersurface in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ satisfying $F+C=\langle X,ν\rangle$, where $F$ is a positive homogeneous smooth symmetric function of the principal curvatures and $C$ is a constant.

Self-similar solutions of $σ_k^α$-curvature flow

In this paper, employing a new inequality, we show that under certain curvature pinching condition, the strictly convex closed smooth self-similar solution of $σ_k^α$-flow must be a round sphere. We also obtain a similar result for the solutions of $F=-\langle X, e_{n+1}\rangle \, (*)$ with a non-homogeneous function $F$. At last, we prove that if $F$ can be compared with $\frac{(n-k+1)σ_{k-1}}{kσ_{k}}$, then a closed strictly $k$-convex solution of $(*)$ must be a round sphere.

Dirac node lines in pure alkali earth metals

Beryllium is a simple alkali earth metal, but has been the target of intensive studies for decades because of its unusual electron behaviors at surfaces. Puzzling aspects include (i) severe deviations from the description of the nearly free electron picture, (ii) anomalously large electron-phonon coupling effect, and (iii) giant Friedal oscillations. The underlying origins for such anomalous surface electron behaviors have been under active debate, but with no consensus. Here, by means of first-principle calculations, we discover that this pure metal system, surprisingly, harbors the Dirac node line (DNL) that in turn helps to rationalize many of the existing puzzles. The DNL is featured by a closed line consisting of linear band crossings and its induced topological surface band agrees well with previous photoemission spectroscopy observation on Be (0001) surface. We further reveal that each of the elemental alakali earth metals of Mg, Ca, and Sr also harbors the DNL, and speculate that the fascinating topological property of DNL might naturally exist in other elemental metals as well.

Lagrangian Bonnet pairs in complex space forms

In this paper we first give a Bonnet theorem for conformal Lagrangian surfaces in complex space forms, then we show that any compact Lagrangian surface in the complex space form admits at most one other global isometric Lagrangian surface with the same mean curvature form, unless the Maslov form is conformal. These two Lagrangian surfaces are then called Lagrangian Bonnet pairs. We also studied the question about Lagrangian Bonnet surfaces in $\tilde{M}^2(4c)$, and obtain some interesting results.

Shortest Path and Distance Queries on Road Networks: Towards Bridging Theory and Practice

Given two locations $s$ and $t$ in a road network, a distance query returns the minimum network distance from $s$ to $t$, while a shortest path query computes the actual route that achieves the minimum distance. These two types of queries find important applications in practice, and a plethora of solutions have been proposed in past few decades. The existing solutions, however, are optimized for either practical or asymptotic performance, but not both. In particular, the techniques with enhanced practical efficiency are mostly heuristic-based, and they offer unattractive worst-case guarantees in terms of space and time. On the other hand, the methods that are worst-case efficient often entail prohibitive preprocessing or space overheads, which render them inapplicable for the large road networks (with millions of nodes) commonly used in modern map applications. This paper presents {\em Arterial Hierarchy (AH)}, an index structure that narrows the gap between theory and practice in answering shortest path and distance queries on road networks. On the theoretical side, we show that, under a realistic assumption, AH answers any distance query in $\tilde{O}(\log \r)$ time, where $\r = d_{max}/d_{min}$, and $d_{max}$ (resp.\ $d_{min}$) is the largest (resp.\ smallest) $L_\infty$ distance between any two nodes in the road network. In addition, any shortest path query can be answered in $\tilde{O}(k + \log \r)$ time, where $k$ is the number of nodes on the shortest path. On the practical side, we experimentally evaluate AH on a large set of real road networks with up to twenty million nodes, and we demonstrate that (i) AH outperforms the state of the art in terms of query time, and (ii) its space and pre-computation overheads are moderate.

Phase transitions of the q-state Potts model on multiply-laced Sierpinski gaskets

We present an exact solution of the q-state Potts model on a class of generalized Sierpinski fractal lattices. The model is shown to possess an ordered phase at low temperatures and a continuous transition to the high temperature disordered phase at any q>=1. Multicriticality is observed in the presence of a symmetry-breaking field. Exact renormalization group analysis yields the phase diagram of the model and a complete set of critical exponents at various transitions.

Hamiltonian stability of the Gauss images of homogeneous isoparametric hypersurfaces

The image of the Gauss map of any oriented isoparametric hypersurface of the unit standard sphere $S^{n+1}(1)$ is a minimal Lagrangian submanifold in the complex hyperquadric $Q_n({\mathbf C})$. In this paper we show that the Gauss image of a compact oriented isoparametric hypersurface with $g$ distinct constant principal curvatures in $S^{n+1}(1)$ is a compact monotone and cyclic embedded Lagrangian submanifold with minimal Maslov number $2n/g$. The main result of this paper is to determine completely the Hamiltonian stability of all compact minimal Lagrangian submanifolds embedded in complex hyperquadrics which are obtained as the images of the Gauss map of homogeneous isoparametric hypersurfaces in the unit spheres, by harmonic analysis on homogeneous spaces and fibrations on homogeneous isoparametric hypersurfaces. In addition, the discussions on the exceptional Riemannian symmetric space $(E_6, U(1)\cdot Spin(10))$ and the corresponding Gauss image have their own interest.

Circular photogalvanic effect induced by near-infrared radiation in InAs quantum wires patterned quasi two-dimensional electron system

In this work we investigated the InAs/InAlAs quantum wires (QWRs) superlattice by optically exciting the structure with near-infrared radiation. By varying the helicity of the radiation at room temperature we observed the circular photogalvanic effect related to the $C_{2v}$ symmetry of the structure, which could be attributed to the formation of a quasi two-dimensional system underlying in the vicinity of the QWRs pattern. The ratio of Rashba and Dresselhaus terms shows an evolution of the spin-orbit interaction in quasi two-dimensional structure with the QWR layer deposition thickness.

Approaching the ground states of the random maximum two-satisfiability problem by a greedy single-spin flipping process

In this brief report we explore the energy landscapes of two spin glass models using a greedy single-spin flipping process, {\tt Gmax}. The ground-state energy density of the random maximum two-satisfiability problem is efficiently approached by {\tt Gmax}. The achieved energy density $e(t)$ decreases with the evolution time $t$ as $e(t)-e(\infty)=h (\log_{10} t)^{-z}$ with a small prefactor $h$ and a scaling coefficient $z > 1$, indicating an energy landscape with deep and rugged funnel-shape regions. For the $\pm J$ Viana-Bray spin glass model, however, the greedy single-spin dynamics quickly gets trapped to a local minimal region of the energy landscape.

Twisted hierarchies associated with the generalized sine-Gordon equation

Twisted $U$- and twisted $U/K$-hierarchies are soliton hierarchies introduced by Terng to find higher flows of the generalized sine-Gordon equation. Twisted $\frac {O(J,J)}{O(J)\times O(J)}$-hierarchies are among the most important classes of twisted hierarchies. In this paper, interesting first and higher flows of twisted $\frac {O(J,J)}{O(J)\times O(J)}$-hierarchies are explicitly derived, the associated submanifold geometry is investigated and a unified treatment of the inverse scattering theory is provided.
