Integrated optimization of train timetables rescheduling and response vehicles on a disrupted metro line

When an unexpected metro disruption occurs, metro managers need to reschedule timetables to avoid trains going into the disruption area, and transport passengers stranded at disruption stations as quickly as possible. This paper proposes a two-stage optimization model to jointly make decisions for two tasks. In the first stage, the timetable rescheduling problem with cancellation and short-turning strategies is formulated as a mixed integer linear programming (MILP). In particular, the instantaneous parameters and variables are used to describe the accumulation of time-varying passenger flow. In the second one, a system-optimal dynamic traffic assignment (SODTA) model is employed to dynamically schedule response vehicles, which is able to capture the dynamic traffic and congestion. Numerical cases of Beijing Metro Line 9 verify the efficiency and effectiveness of our proposed model, and results show that: (1) when occurring a disruption event during peak hours, the impact on the normal timetable is greater, and passengers in the direction with fewer train services are more affected; (2) if passengers stranded at the terminal stations of disruption area are not transported in time, they will rapidly increase at a speed of more than 300 passengers per minute; (3) compared with the fixed shortest path, using the response vehicles reduces the total travel time about 7%. However, it results in increased travel time for some passengers.

A superconducting nanowire photon number resolving four-quadrant detector-based Gigabit deep-space laser communication receiver prototype

Deep space explorations require transferring huge amounts of data quickly from very distant targets. Laser communication is a promising technology that can offer a data rate of magnitude faster than conventional microwave communication due to the fundamentally narrow divergence of light. This study demonstrated a photon-sensitive receiver prototype with over Gigabit data rate, immunity to strong background photon noise, and simultaneous tracking ability. The advantages are inherited from a joint-optimized superconducting nanowire single-photon detector (SNSPD) array, designed into a four-quadrant structure with each quadrant capable of resolving six photons. Installed in a free-space coupled and low-vibration cryostat, the system detection efficiency reached 72.7%, the detector efficiency was 97.5%, and the total photon counting rate was 1.6 Gcps. Additionally, communication performance was tested for pulse position modulation (PPM) format. A series of signal processing methods were introduced to maximize the performance of the forward error correction (FEC) code. Consequently, the receiver exhibits a faster data rate and better sensitivity by about twofold (1.76 photons/bit at 800 Mbps and 3.40 photons/bit at 1.2 Gbps) compared to previously reported results (3.18 photon/bit at 622 Mbps for the Lunar Laser Communication Demonstration). Furthermore, communications in strong background noise and with simultaneous tracking ability were demonstrated aimed at the challenges of daylight operation and accurate tracking of dim beacon light in deep space scenarios.

Ultrahigh thermoelectric performance of Janus α-STe2 and α-SeTe2 monolayers

Combined with first-principles calculations and semiclassical Boltzmann transport theory, Janus α-STe2 and α-SeTe2 monolayers are investigated systematically. Janus α-STe2 and α-SeTe2 monolayers are indirect semiconductors with band gaps of 1.20 and 0.96 eV. It is found they possess ultrahigh figure of merit (ZT) values of 3.9 and 4.4 at 500 K, much higher than that of the pristine α-Te monolayer (2.8). The higher ZT originates from Janus structures reduce lattice thermal conductivities remarkably compared with pristine α-Te monolayer. The much higher phonon anharmonicity in Janus monolayers leads to significant lower lattice thermal conductivity. It is also found electronic thermal conductivity can play an important role in thermoelectric efficiency for the materials with quite low lattice thermal conductivity. This work suggests the potential applications of Janus α-STe2 and α-SeTe2 monolayers as thermoelectric materials and highlights Janus structure as an effective way to enhance thermoelectric performance.

Multimodal data matters: language model pre-training over structured and unstructured electronic health records

As two important textual modalities in electronic health records (EHR), both structured data (clinical codes) and unstructured data (clinical narratives) have recently been increasingly applied to the healthcare domain. Most existing EHR-oriented studies, however, either focus on a particular modality or integrate data from different modalities in a straightforward manner, which usually treats structured and unstructured data as two independent sources of information about patient admission and ignore the intrinsic interactions between them. In fact, the two modalities are documented during the same encounter where structured data inform the documentation of unstructured data and vice versa. In this paper, we proposed a Medical Multimodal Pre-trained Language Model, named MedM-PLM, to learn enhanced EHR representations over structured and unstructured data and explore the interaction of two modalities. In MedM-PLM, two Transformer-based neural network components are firstly adopted to learn representative characteristics from each modality. A cross-modal module is then introduced to model their interactions. We pre-trained MedM-PLM on the MIMIC-III dataset and verified the effectiveness of the model on three downstream clinical tasks, i.e., medication recommendation, 30-day readmission prediction and ICD coding. Extensive experiments demonstrate the power of MedM-PLM compared with state-of-the-art methods. Further analyses and visualizations show the robustness of our model, which could potentially provide more comprehensive interpretations for clinical decision-making.

Exploring evolution-aware & -free protein language models as protein function predictors

Large-scale Protein Language Models (PLMs) have improved performance in protein prediction tasks, ranging from 3D structure prediction to various function predictions. In particular, AlphaFold, a ground-breaking AI system, could potentially reshape structural biology. However, the utility of the PLM module in AlphaFold, Evoformer, has not been explored beyond structure prediction. In this paper, we investigate the representation ability of three popular PLMs: ESM-1b (single sequence), MSA-Transformer (multiple sequence alignment) and Evoformer (structural), with a special focus on Evoformer. Specifically, we aim to answer the following key questions: (i) Does the Evoformer trained as part of AlphaFold produce representations amenable to predicting protein function? (ii) If yes, can Evoformer replace ESM-1b and MSA-Transformer? (ii) How much do these PLMs rely on evolution-related protein data? In this regard, are they complementary to each other? We compare these models by empirical study along with new insights and conclusions. All code and datasets for reproducibility are available at https://github.com/elttaes/Revisiting-PLMs.

Entropy-driven Sampling and Training Scheme for Conditional Diffusion Generation

Denoising Diffusion Probabilistic Model (DDPM) is able to make flexible conditional image generation from prior noise to real data, by introducing an independent noise-aware classifier to provide conditional gradient guidance at each time step of denoising process. However, due to the ability of classifier to easily discriminate an incompletely generated image only with high-level structure, the gradient, which is a kind of class information guidance, tends to vanish early, leading to the collapse from conditional generation process into the unconditional process. To address this problem, we propose two simple but effective approaches from two perspectives. For sampling procedure, we introduce the entropy of predicted distribution as the measure of guidance vanishing level and propose an entropy-aware scaling method to adaptively recover the conditional semantic guidance. For training stage, we propose the entropy-aware optimization objectives to alleviate the overconfident prediction for noisy data.On ImageNet1000 256x256, with our proposed sampling scheme and trained classifier, the pretrained conditional and unconditional DDPM model can achieve 10.89% (4.59 to 4.09) and 43.5% (12 to 6.78) FID improvement respectively. The code is available at https://github.com/ZGCTroy/ED-DPM.

Time-Reversal-Even Nonlinear Current Induced Spin Polarization

We propose a time-reversal-even spin generation in second order of electric fields, which dominates the current induced spin polarization in a wide class of centrosymmetric nonmagnetic materials, and leads to a novel nonlinear spin-orbit torque in magnets. We reveal a quantum origin of this effect from the momentum space dipole of the anomalous spin polarizability. First-principles calculations predict sizable spin generations in several nonmagnetic hcp metals, in monolayer TiTe$_{2}$, and in ferromagnetic monolayer MnSe$_{2}$, which can be detected in experiment. Our work opens up the broad vista of nonlinear spintronics in both nonmagnetic and magnetic systems.

Quarter-wave Resonator Based Tunable Coupler for Xmon Qubits

We propose a scheme of tunable coupler based on quarter-wave resonator for scalable quantum integrated circuits. The open end of the T-type resonator is capacitively coupled to two Xmon qubits, while another end is an asymmetric dc-SQUID which dominates the inductive energy of coupler resonator. The dc-Current applied through the flux bias line could change the magnetic flux inside the dc-SQUID, so the frequency of coupler resonator can be effectively tuned and the qubit-qubit coupling can be totally switched off. As the increase of junction asymmetry for the dc-SQUID, the coupling of SQUID's effective phase difference and cavity modes become smaller at required working frequency regime of coupler resonator, and this could reduce the descent of the resonator's quality factor. The separation between two cross-capacitor can be larger with help of transverses width of the T-shape resonator, and then the ZZ crosstalk coupling can be effectively suppressed. The asymmetric dc-SQUID is about 5 millimeters away from the Xmon qubits and only needs a small current on the flux bias line, which in principle creates less flux noises to superconducting Xmon qubits.

Intrinsic Nonlinear Planar Hall Effect

We propose an intrinsic nonlinear planar Hall effect, which is of band geometric origin, independent of scattering, and scales with the second order of electric field and first order of magnetic field. We show that this effect is less symmetry constrained compared to other nonlinear transport effects and is supported in a large class of nonmagnetic polar and chiral crystals. Its characteristic angular dependence provides an effective way to control the nonlinear output. Combined with first-principles calculations, we evaluate this effect in the Janus monolayer MoSSe and report experimentally measurable results. Our work reveals an intrinsic transport effect, which offers a new tool for material characterization and a new mechanism for nonlinear device application.

DBT-Net: Dual-branch federative magnitude and phase estimation with attention-in-attention transformer for monaural speech enhancement

The decoupling-style concept begins to ignite in the speech enhancement area, which decouples the original complex spectrum estimation task into multiple easier sub-tasks i.e., magnitude-only recovery and the residual complex spectrum estimation)}, resulting in better performance and easier interpretability. In this paper, we propose a dual-branch federative magnitude and phase estimation framework, dubbed DBT-Net, for monaural speech enhancement, aiming at recovering the coarse- and fine-grained regions of the overall spectrum in parallel. From the complementary perspective, the magnitude estimation branch is designed to filter out dominant noise components in the magnitude domain, while the complex spectrum purification branch is elaborately designed to inpaint the missing spectral details and implicitly estimate the phase information in the complex-valued spectral domain. To facilitate the information flow between each branch, interaction modules are introduced to leverage features learned from one branch, so as to suppress the undesired parts and recover the missing components of the other branch. Instead of adopting the conventional RNNs and temporal convolutional networks for sequence modeling, we employ a novel attention-in-attention transformer-based network within each branch for better feature learning. More specially, it is composed of several adaptive spectro-temporal attention transformer-based modules and an adaptive hierarchical attention module, aiming to capture long-term time-frequency dependencies and further aggregate intermediate hierarchical contextual information. Comprehensive evaluations on the WSJ0-SI84 + DNS-Challenge and VoiceBank + DEMAND dataset demonstrate that the proposed approach consistently outperforms previous advanced systems and yields state-of-the-art performance in terms of speech quality and intelligibility.

DMF-Net: A decoupling-style multi-band fusion model for full-band speech enhancement

For the difficulty and large computational complexity of modeling more frequency bands, full-band speech enhancement based on deep neural networks is still challenging. Previous studies usually adopt compressed full-band speech features in Bark and ERB scale with relatively low frequency resolution, leading to degraded performance, especially in the high-frequency region. In this paper, we propose a decoupling-style multi-band fusion model to perform full-band speech denoising and dereverberation. Instead of optimizing the full-band speech by a single network structure, we decompose the full-band target into multi sub-band speech features and then employ a multi-stage chain optimization strategy to estimate clean spectrum stage by stage. Specifically, the low- (0-8 kHz), middle- (8-16 kHz), and high-frequency (16-24 kHz) regions are mapped by three separate sub-networks and are then fused to obtain the full-band clean target STFT spectrum. Comprehensive experiments on two public datasets demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms previous advanced systems and yields promising performance in terms of speech quality and intelligibility in real complex scenarios.

Methane detection to 1 ppm using machine learning analysis of atmospheric pressure plasma optical emission spectra

Optical emission spectroscopy from a small-volume, 5 uL, atmospheric pressure RF-driven helium plasma was used in conjunction with Partial Least Squares Discriminant Analysis (PLS-DA) for the detection of trace concentrations of methane gas. A limit of detection of 1 ppm was obtained and sample concentrations up to 100 ppm CH4 were classified using a nine-category model. A range of algorithm enhancements were investigated including regularization, simple data segmentation and subset selection, VIP feature selection and wavelength variable compression in order to address the high dimensionality and collinearity of spectral emission data. These approaches showed the potential for significant reduction in the number of wavelength variables and the spectral resolution/bandwidth. Wavelength variable compression exhibited reliable predictive performance, with accuracy values > 97%, under more challenging multi-session train - test scenarios. Simple modelling of plasma electron energy distribution functions highlights the complex cross-sensitivities between the target methane, its dissociation products and atmospheric impurities and their impact on excitation and emission.

Motion Gait: Gait Recognition via Motion Excitation

Gait recognition, which can realize long-distance and contactless identification, is an important biometric technology. Recent gait recognition methods focus on learning the pattern of human movement or appearance during walking, and construct the corresponding spatio-temporal representations. However, different individuals have their own laws of movement patterns, simple spatial-temporal features are difficult to describe changes in motion of human parts, especially when confounding variables such as clothing and carrying are included, thus distinguishability of features is reduced. In this paper, we propose the Motion Excitation Module (MEM) to guide spatio-temporal features to focus on human parts with large dynamic changes, MEM learns the difference information between frames and intervals, so as to obtain the representation of temporal motion changes, it is worth mentioning that MEM can adapt to frame sequences with uncertain length, and it does not add any additional parameters. Furthermore, we present the Fine Feature Extractor (FFE), which independently learns the spatio-temporal representations of human body according to different horizontal parts of individuals. Benefiting from MEM and FFE, our method innovatively combines motion change information, significantly improving the performance of the model under cross appearance conditions. On the popular dataset CASIA-B, our proposed Motion Gait is better than the existing gait recognition methods.

Optimizing Shoulder to Shoulder: A Coordinated Sub-Band Fusion Model for Real-Time Full-Band Speech Enhancement

Due to the high computational complexity to model more frequency bands, it is still intractable to conduct real-time full-band speech enhancement based on deep neural networks. Recent studies typically utilize the compressed perceptually motivated features with relatively low frequency resolution to filter the full-band spectrum by one-stage networks, leading to limited speech quality improvements. In this paper, we propose a coordinated sub-band fusion network for full-band speech enhancement, which aims to recover the low- (0-8 kHz), middle- (8-16 kHz), and high-band (16-24 kHz) in a step-wise manner. Specifically, a dual-stream network is first pretrained to recover the low-band complex spectrum, and another two sub-networks are designed as the middle- and high-band noise suppressors in the magnitude-only domain. To fully capitalize on the information intercommunication, we employ a sub-band interaction module to provide external knowledge guidance across different frequency bands. Extensive experiments show that the proposed method yields consistent performance advantages over state-of-the-art full-band baselines.

ET White Paper: To Find the First Earth 2.0

We propose to develop a wide-field and ultra-high-precision photometric survey mission, temporarily named "Earth 2.0 (ET)". This mission is designed to measure, for the first time, the occurrence rate and the orbital distributions of Earth-sized planets. ET consists of seven 30cm telescopes, to be launched to the Earth-Sun's L2 point. Six of these are transit telescopes with a field of view of 500 square degrees. Staring in the direction that encompasses the original Kepler field for four continuous years, this monitoring will return tens of thousands of transiting planets, including the elusive Earth twins orbiting solar-type stars. The seventh telescope is a 30cm microlensing telescope that will monitor an area of 4 square degrees toward the galactic bulge. This, combined with simultaneous ground-based KMTNet observations, will measure masses for hundreds of long-period and free-floating planets. Together, the transit and the microlensing telescopes will revolutionize our understandings of terrestrial planets across a large swath of orbital distances and free space. In addition, the survey data will also facilitate studies in the fields of asteroseismology, Galactic archeology, time-domain sciences, and black holes in binaries.

Feature-aware Diversified Re-ranking with Disentangled Representations for Relevant Recommendation

Relevant recommendation is a special recommendation scenario which provides relevant items when users express interests on one target item (e.g., click, like and purchase). Besides considering the relevance between recommendations and trigger item, the recommendations should also be diversified to avoid information cocoons. However, existing diversified recommendation methods mainly focus on item-level diversity which is insufficient when the recommended items are all relevant to the target item. Moreover, redundant or noisy item features might affect the performance of simple feature-aware recommendation approaches. Faced with these issues, we propose a Feature Disentanglement Self-Balancing Re-ranking framework (FDSB) to capture feature-aware diversity. The framework consists of two major modules, namely disentangled attention encoder (DAE) and self-balanced multi-aspect ranker. In DAE, we use multi-head attention to learn disentangled aspects from rich item features. In the ranker, we develop an aspect-specific ranking mechanism that is able to adaptively balance the relevance and diversity for each aspect. In experiments, we conduct offline evaluation on the collected dataset and deploy FDSB on KuaiShou app for online A/B test on the function of relevant recommendation. The significant improvements on both recommendation quality and user experience verify the effectiveness of our approach.

Atomic-scale Deformation Process of Glasses Unveiled by Stress-induced Structural Anisotropy

Experimentally resolving atomic-scale structural changes of a deformed glass remains challenging owing to the disordered nature of glass structure. Here, we show that the structural anisotropy emerges as a general hallmark for different types of glasses (metallic glasses, oxide glass, amorphous selenium, and polymer glass) after thermo-mechanical deformation, and it is highly correlates with local nonaffine atomic displacements detected by the high-energy X-ray diffraction technique. By analyzing the anisotropic pair density function, we unveil the atomic-level mechanism responsible for the plastic flow, which notably differs between metallic glasses and covalent glasses. The structural rearrangements in metallic glasses are mediated through cutting and formation of atomic bonds, which occurs in some localized inelastic regions embedded in elastic matrix, whereas that of covalent glasses is mediated through the rotation of atomic bonds or chains without bond length change, which occurs in a less localized manner.

Cross-Enhancement Transformer for Action Segmentation

Temporal convolutions have been the paradigm of choice in action segmentation, which enhances long-term receptive fields by increasing convolution layers. However, high layers cause the loss of local information necessary for frame recognition. To solve the above problem, a novel encoder-decoder structure is proposed in this paper, called Cross-Enhancement Transformer. Our approach can be effective learning of temporal structure representation with interactive self-attention mechanism. Concatenated each layer convolutional feature maps in encoder with a set of features in decoder produced via self-attention. Therefore, local and global information are used in a series of frame actions simultaneously. In addition, a new loss function is proposed to enhance the training process that penalizes over-segmentation errors. Experiments show that our framework performs state-of-the-art on three challenging datasets: 50Salads, Georgia Tech Egocentric Activities and the Breakfast dataset.
