Quantum liquids of the S=3/2 Kitaev honeycomb and related Kugel-Khomskii models

The $S=3/2$ Kitaev honeycomb model (KHM) is unique among the spin-$S$ Kitaev models due to a massive ground state quasi-degeneracy that hampered previous numerical and analytical studies. In a recent work~\cite{jin2022unveiling}, we showed how an SO(6) Majorana parton mean-field theory of the $S=3/2$ isotropic KHM explains the anomalous features of this Kitaev spin liquid (KSL) in terms of an emergent low-energy Majorana flat band. Away from the isotropic limit, the $S=3/2$ KSL generally displays a quadrupolar order with gapped or gapless Majorana excitations, features that were quantitatively confirmed by DMRG simulations. In this paper, we explore the connection between the $S = 3/2$ KHM with Kugel-Khomskii models and discover new exactly soluble examples for the latter. We perform a symmetry analysis for the variational parton mean-field \emph{Ans{ä}tze} in the spin and orbital basis for different quantum liquid phases of the $S=3/2$ KHM. Finally, we investigate a proposed time-reversal symmetry breaking spin liquid induced by a {[}111{]} single ion anisotropy and elucidate its topological properties as well as experimental signatures, e.g. an unquantized thermal Hall response.

Magnetic excitations, phase diagram and order-by-disorder in the extended triangular-lattice Hubbard model

The dynamical structure factor is an important observable of quantum magnets but due to numerical and theoretical limitations, it remains a challenge to make predictions for Hubbard-like models beyond one dimension. In this work, we study the magnetic excitations of the triangular lattice Hubbard model including next-nearest neighbor hopping. Starting from the 120$^{\circ}$ and stripe magnetic orders we compute the magnon spectra within a self-consistent random phase approximation. In the stripe phase, we generically find accidental zero modes related to a classical degeneracy known from the corresponding $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg model. We extend the order-by-disorder mechanism to Hubbard systems and show how quantum fluctuations stabilize the stripe order. In addition, the frustration-induced condensation of magnon modes allows us to map out the entire phase diagram which is in remarkable agreement with recent numerical works. We discuss connections to experiments on triangular lattice compounds and the relation of our results to the proposed chiral spin liquid phase.

Prethermal nematic order and staircase heating in a driven frustrated Ising magnet with dipolar interactions

Many-body systems subject to a high-frequency drive can show intriguing thermalization behavior. Prior to heating to a featureless infinite-temperature state, these systems can spend an exponentially long time in prethermal phases characterized by various kinds of order. Here, we uncover the rich non-equilibrium phase diagram of a driven frustrated two-dimensional Ising magnet with competing short-range ferromagnetic and long-range dipolar interactions. We show that the ordered stripe and nematic phases, which appear in equilibrium as a function of temperature, underpin subsequent prethermal phases in a new multi-step heating process en route towards the ultimate heat death. We discuss implications for experiments on ferromagnetic thin films and other driving induced phenomena in frustrated magnets.

Unveiling the S=3/2 Kitaev Honeycomb Spin Liquids

The S=3/2 Kitaev honeycomb model (KHM) is a quantum spin liquid (QSL) state coupled to a static Z$_2$ gauge field. Employing an SO(6) Majorana representation of spin 3/2's, we find an exact representation of the conserved plaquette fluxes in terms of static Z$_2$ gauge fields akin to the S=1/2 KHM which enables us to treat the remaining interacting matter fermion sector in a parton mean-field theory. We uncover a ground-state phase diagram consisting of gapped and gapless QSLs. Our parton description is in quantitative agreement with numerical simulations, and is furthermore corroborated by the addition of a $[001]$ single ion anisotropy (SIA) which continuously connects the gapless Dirac QSL of our model with that of the S=1/2 KHM. In the presence of a weak $[111]$ SIA, we discuss an emergent chiral QSL within a perturbation theory.

Twisting the Dirac cones of the SU(4) spin-orbital liquid on the honeycomb lattice

By combining the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method with Gutzwiller projected wave functions, we study the SU(4) symmetric spin-orbital model on the honeycomb lattice. We find that the ground states can be well described by a Gutzwiller projected $π$-flux state with Dirac-type gapless excitations at one quarter filling. Although these Dirac points are gapped by emergent gauge fluxes on finite cylinders, they govern the critical behavior in the thermodynamic limit. By inserting a $θ=π$ spin flux to twist the boundary condition, we can shift the gapless sector to the ground state, which provides compelling evidence for the presence of a gapless Dirac spin-orbital liquid.

Collective effects in an incompressible electronic liquid

Starting from the Landau's kinetic equation, we show that an electronic liquid in $d=2,3$ dimensions depicted by a Landau type effective theory will become incompressible on condition that the Landau parameters satisfy either (i) $1+F_{1}^{s}/d=0$ or (ii) $F_{0}^{s}\to{}+\infty$. The condition (i) is the Pomeranchuk instability in the current channel and suggests a quantum spin liquid (QSL) state with a spinon Fermi surface; while the condition (ii) means that the strong repulsion in the charge channel and leads to a conventional charge and thermal insulator. In the collisionless regime ($ωτ\gg{}1$) and the hydrodynamic regime ($ωτ\ll{}1$), the zero and first sound modes have been studied and classified by symmetries, including the longitudinal and transverse modes in $d=2,3$ and the higher angular momentum modes in $d=3$. The sufficient (and/or necessary) conditions of these collective modes have been revealed. It has been demonstrated that some of these collective modes will behave in quite different manners under two incompressibility conditions (i) or (ii). Possible nematic QSL states and a hierarchy structure for gapless QSL states have been proposed in $d=3$.

Unveiling a critical stripy state in the triangular-lattice SU(4) spin-orbital model

The simplest spin-orbital model can host a nematic spin-orbital liquid state on the triangular lattice. We provide clear evidence that the ground state of the SU(4) Kugel-Khomskii model on the triangular lattice can be well described by a "single" Gutzwiller projected wave function with an emergent parton Fermi surface, despite it exhibits strong finite-size effect in quasi-one-dimensional cylinders. The finite-size effect can be resolved by the fact that the parton Fermi surface consists of open orbits in the reciprocal space. Thereby, a stripy liquid state is expected in the two-dimensional limit, which preserves the SU(4) symmetry while breaks the translational symmetry by doubling the unit cell along one of the lattice vector directions. It is indicative that these stripes are critical and the central charge is $c=3$, in agreement with the SU(4)$_1$ Wess-Zumino-Witten conformal field theory. All these results are consistent with the Lieb-Schultz-Mattis-Oshikawa-Hastings theorem.

Matrix product states for Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov wave functions

We provide an efficient and accurate method for converting Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov wave functions into matrix product states (MPSs). These wave functions, also known as Bogoliubov vacua, exhibit a peculiar entanglement structure that the eigenvectors of the reduced density matrix are also Bogoliubov vacua. We exploit this important feature to obtain their optimal MPS approximation and derive an explicit formula for corresponding MPS matrices. The performance of our method is benchmarked with the Kitaev chain and the Majorana-Hubbard model on the honeycomb lattice. The approach facilitates the applications of Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov wave functions and is ideally suited for combining with the density-matrix renormalization group method.

Flat and Correlated Plasmon Bands in Graphene/$α$-RuCl${_3}$ Heterostructures

We develop a microscopic theory for plasmon excitations of graphene/$α$-RuCl${_3}$ heterostructures. Within a Kondo-Kitaev model with various interactions, a heavy Fermi liquid hosting flat bands emerges in which the itinerant electrons of graphene effectively hybridize with the fractionalized fermions of the Kitaev quantum spin liquid. We find novel correlated plasmon bands induced by the interplay of flat bands and interactions and argue that our theory is consistent with the available experimental data on graphene/$α$-RuCl${_3}$ heterostructures. We predict novel plasmon branches beyond the long-wavelength limit and discuss the implications for probing correlation phenomena in other flat band systems.

Density matrix renormalization group boosted by Gutzwiller projected wave functions

We propose to boost the performance of the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) in two dimensions by using Gutzwiller projected states as the initialization ansatz. When the Gutzwiller projected state is properly chosen, the notorious "local minimum" issue in DMRG can be circumvented and the precision of DMRG can be improved by orders of magnitude without extra computational cost. Moreover, this method allows to quantify the closeness of the initial Gutzwiller projected state and the final converged state after DMRG sweeps, thereby sheds light on whether the Gutzwiller ansatz captures the essential entanglement features of the actual ground state for a given Hamiltonian. The Kitaev honeycomb model has been exploited to demonstrate and benchmark this new method.

Efficient tensor network representation for Gutzwiller projected states of paired fermions

Recent work by Wu {\em et al.} [arXiv:1910.11011] proposed a numerical method, so-called matrix product operator-matrix product state (MPO-MPS) method, by which several types of quantum many-body wave functions, in particular, the projected Fermi sea state, can be efficiently represented as a tensor network. In this paper, we generalize the MPO-MPS method to study Gutzwiller projected paired states of fermions, where the maximally localized Wannier orbitals for Bogoliubov quasiparticles/quasiholes have been adapted to improve the computational performance. The study of $SO(3)$-symmetric spin-1 chains reveals that this new method has better performance than variational Monte Carlo for gapped states and similar performance for gapless states. Moreover, we demonstrate that dynamic correlation functions can be easily evaluated by this method cooperating with other MPS-based accurate approaches, such as the Chebyshev MPS method.

Classical and quantum order in hyperkagome antiferromagnets

Motivated by recent experiments and density functional theory calculations on choloalite PbCuTe$_2$O$_6$, which possesses a Cu-based three-dimensional hyperkagome lattice, we propose and study a $J_1$-$J_2$-$J_3$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on a hyperkagome lattice. In the classical limit, possible ground states are analyzed by two triangle rules, i.e., the "hyperkagome triangle rule" and the "isolated triangle rule," and classical Monte Carlo simulations are exploited to identify possible classical magnetic ordering and explore the phase diagram. In the quantum regime, Schwinger boson theory is applied to study possible quantum spin liquid states and long-range magnetically ordered states on an equal footing. These quantum states with bosonic partons are classified and analyzed by using projective symmetry groups (PSGs). It is found that there are only four types of algebraic PSGs allowed by the space group $P4_{1}32$ on a hyperkagome lattice. Moreover, there are only two types of PSGs that are compatible with the $J_1$-$J_2$-$J_3$ Heisenberg model. These two types of $Z_2$ bosonic states are distinguished by the gauge-invariant flux on the elementary ten-site loops on the hyperkagome network, called zero-flux state and $π$-flux state respectively. Both the zero-flux state and the $π$-flux state are able to give rise to quantum spin liquid states as well as magnetically ordered states, and the zero-flux states and the $π$-flux states can be distinguished by the lower and upper edges of the spectral function $S(\bm{q},ω)$, which can be measured by inelastic neutron scattering experiments.

Hidden $SU(2)$ Symmetries, the Symmetry Hierarchy and the Emergent Eight-Fold Way in Spin-1 Quantum Magnets

The largest allowed symmetry in a spin-1 quantum system is an $SU(3)$ symmetry rather than the $SO(3)$ spin rotation. In this work, we reveal some $SU(2)$ symmetries as subgroups of $SU(3)$ that, to the best of our knowledge, have not previously been recognized. Then, we construct $SU(2)$ symmetric Hamiltonians and explore the ground-state phase diagram in accordance with the $SU(3)\supset SU(2)\times U(1)$ symmetry hierarchy. It is natural to treat the eight generators of the $SU(3)$ symmetry on an equal footing; this approach is called the eight-fold way. We find that the spin spectral functions and spin quadrupole spectral functions share the same structure, provided that the elementary excitations are flavor waves at low energies, which serves as a clue to the eight-fold way. An emergent $S=1/2$ quantum spin liquid is proposed to coexist with gapful spin nematic order in one of the ground states. In analogy to quantum chromodynamics, we find the gap relation for hydrodynamic modes in quantum spin-orbital liquid states, which is nothing but the Gell-Mann-Okubo formula.

Topological Superconductivity Intertwined with Broken Symmetries

Recently the superconductor and topological semimetal PbTaSe$_2$ was experimentally found to exhibit surface-only lattice rotational symmetry breaking below $T_c$. We exploit the Ginzburg-Landau free energy and propose a microscopic two-channel model to study possible superconducting states on the surface of PbTaSe$_2$. We identify two types of topological superconducting states. One is time-reversal invariant and preserves the lattice hexagonal symmetry while the other breaks both symmetries. We find that such time-reversal symmetry breaking is unavoidable for a superconducting state in a two dimensional irreducible representation of crystal point group in a system where the spatial inversion symmetry is broken and the strong spin-orbit coupling is present. Our findings will guide the search for topological chiral superconductors.

Evidence for nematic superconductivity of topological surface states in PbTaSe2

Spontaneous symmetry breaking has been a paradigm to describe the phase transitions in condensed matter physics. In addition to the continuous electromagnetic gauge symmetry, an unconventional superconductor can break discrete symmetries simultaneously, such as time reversal and lattice rotational symmetry. In this work we report a characteristic in-plane 2-fold behaviour of the resistive upper critical field and point-contact spectra on the superconducting semimetal PbTaSe2 with topological nodal-rings, despite its hexagonal lattice symmetry (or D_3h in bulk while C_3v on surface, to be precise). However, we do not observe any lattice rotational symmetry breaking signal from field-angle-dependent specific heat. It is worth noting that such surface-only electronic nematicity is in sharp contrast to the observation in the topological superconductor candidate, CuxBi2Se3, where the nematicity occurs in various bulk measurements. In combination with theory, superconducting nematicity is likely to emerge from the topological surface states of PbTaSe2, rather than the proximity effect. The issue of time reversal symmetry breaking is also addressed. Thus, our results on PbTaSe2 shed new light on possible routes to realize nematic superconductivity with nontrivial topology.

Pristine Mott Insulator from an Exactly Solvable Spin-1/2 Kitaev Model

We propose an exactly solvable quantum spin-1/2 model with time reversal invariance on a two dimensional brick-wall lattice, where each unit cell consists of three sites. We find that the ground states are algebraic quantum spin liquid states. The spinon excitations are gapless and the energy dispersion is linear around two Dirac points. The ground states are of three-fold topological degeneracy on a torus. Breaking the time reversal symmetry opens a bulk energy gap and the $Z_2$ vortices obey non-Abelian statistics.

Exact Solution to a Class of Generalized Kitaev Spin-$1/2$ Models in Arbitrary Dimensions

We construct a class of exactly solvable generalized Kitaev spin-$1/2$ models in arbitrary dimensions, which is beyond the category of quantum compass models. The Jordan-Wigner transformation is employed to prove the exact solvability. An exactly solvable quantum spin-$1/2$ models can be mapped to a gas of free Majorana fermions coupled to static $Z_2$ gauge fields. We classify these exactly solvable models according to their parent models. Any model belonging to this class can be generated by one of the parent models. For illustration, a two dimensional ($2D$) tetragon-octagon model and a three dimensional ($3D$) $xy$ bond model are studied.

Majorana zero modes and long range edge correlation in interacting Kitaev chains: analytic solutions and density-matrix-renormalization-group study

We study Kitaev model in one-dimension with open boundary condition by using exact analytic methods for non-interacting system at zero chemical potential as well as in the symmetric case of Δ = t, and by using density-matrix-renormalizationgroup method for interacting system with nearest neighbor repulsion interaction. We suggest and examine an edge correlation function of Majorana fermions to characterize the long range order in the topological superconducting states and study the phase diagram of the interating Kitaev chain.
