Frustration from Localized Zhang-Rice States: A Unified Theory of Doping-Driven Magnetic Transitions in Cuprates

The microscopic mechanism by which doped holes disrupt the antiferromagnetic order is one of the fundamental questions in cuprates. In this work, we propose a unified microscopic theory in which doped holes form spatially localized Zhang-Rice singlets which actively mediate emergent spin exchange. Rather than acting as simple non-magnetic vacancies, these localized states introduce emergent next-nearest $J_2$ and third-nearest $J_3$ neighbor superexchanges. This dopant-induced exchange pathway generates significant magnetic frustration, naturally explaining the rapid collapse of the Néel AFM order and the emergence of a spin-glass phase on the hole-doped side. Our findings provide a comprehensive framework for understanding the complex doping-driven magnetic phase transitions and magnetic electron-hole asymmetry in lightly doped cuprates.

Extracting Universal Entanglement Scaling from Mixed Fermionic Gaussian States via Entanglement Projected Entropy

Identifying spatial quantum correlations in mixed states is challenging because thermal mixed-state contributions obscure the entanglement encoded in subsystem entropy. Here, we introduce the entanglement projected entropy (EPE), a purification-independent Gaussian spatial filter for mixed fermionic states. By resolving subsystem entropy into Gaussian entropy channels and projecting their purification partners onto the physical complement, we obtain a closed-form expression in terms of the physical covariance matrix. In a one-dimensional free-fermion chain, it removes the volume-law mixed-state background and recovers the zero-temperature conformal scaling with the $c/3$ coefficient. In a two-dimensional half-filled $π$-flux model, it reveals a universal finite-temperature scaling collapse governed by a Dirac infrared length fixed by the low-energy velocity. These results establish EPE as an entropy-channel filter that exposes boundary-sensitive universal scaling hidden beneath mixed-state entropy.

Gossamer Superconductivity in Moiré WSe$_2$ Bilayer

Moiré transition metal dichalcogenides have served as a versatile platform for simulating Hubbard physics. Recent experiments have identified robust superconductivity in moiré bilayer WSe$_2$ for certain twist angles. Here, we propose the gossamer nature of the superconductivity recently discovered at half-filling and zero displacement field in twisted WSe$_2$. By mapping the moiré continuum system to an effective extended single-orbital Hubbard model on the triangular lattice, we employ renormalized mean-field theory to investigate the strong-coupling phase diagram. We find that a moderate Coulomb repulsion partially suppresses charge fluctuations while preserving a finite density of mobile doublons and holes. In this regime, the interplay between extended kinetic hoppings and antiferromagnetic superexchange stabilizes a chiral $d+id$ superconducting phase. Our results naturally account for the twist-angle-dependent evolution from a Mott insulator to a superconductor and eventually to a correlated metal. Furthermore, the model demonstrates that this half-filled pairing state vanishes rapidly upon density doping, consistent with experimental observations.

Efficient simulation of low-entanglement bosonic Gaussian states in polynomial time

Bosonic Gaussian states are ubiquitous in quantum optics and condensed matter physics. While they are efficiently handled within the Gaussian formalism, sampling requires calculating amplitudes in the boson occupation basis. This step, however, is hindered by a significant bottleneck due to the hafnian. We present an efficient algorithm that converts pure bosonic Gaussian states into matrix product states (MPSs), thereby establishing a versatile tool for probing bosonic Gaussian systems in settings where direct Gaussian-formalism-based calculations become inefficient. Our method combines a Gaussian singular value decomposition with a projected-creation-operator mapping that constructs local MPS tensors without computing hafnians. Benchmarking on covariance matrices from the Jiuzhang 2.0 and Jiuzhang 4.0 Gaussian boson sampling experiments demonstrates substantial speedups over previous tensor-network approaches in the low-entanglement regime relevant to lossy devices. The method provides a scalable classical simulation framework for bosonic Gaussian states with limited entanglement. In this regime, a target accuracy can be achieved with a bond dimension that remains computationally tractable, thereby extending the applicability of MPS-based methods to a broad range of bosonic systems.

Orbital-Selective $d$-wave Superconductivity in the Two-Band $t$-$J$ Model: Possible Applications to La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$

We investigate superconductivity in a two-band $t$-$J$ model consisting of an itinerant orbital (orbital-0) and a quasi-localized orbital (orbital-1) using variational Monte Carlo. A robust orbital-selective $d$-wave superconducting state is found to emerge exclusively from the itinerant orbital. An analysis of the superexchange energy hierarchy shows that the quasi-localized orbital-1 competes with superconductivity by favoring local inter-orbital bound states, which act as energy defects and disrupt phase coherence. Consistently, the superconducting order parameter is monotonically suppressed as the occupancy of orbital-1 increases. Motivated by superconductivity in nickelate La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$, these results highlight the essential role of multi-orbital physics beyond the single-band $t$-$J$ framework and point to a concrete route to enhance $T_c$: suppressing the involvement of localized $d_{z^2}$-derived orbitals.

Magnetic electron-hole asymmetry in cuprates: a computational revisit

In this work, we revisit the electron-hole asymmetry of antiferromagnetism in cuprates by studying the three-band Emery model. Using parameters relevant to La$_2$CuO$_4$, we benchmark the anti-ferromagnetic response for a large range of dopings with variational Monte Carlo, determinant quantum Monte Carlo, constrained-path auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo, density-matrix embedding theory, and the Gutzwiller approximation. Across methods and accessible sizes/temperatures, we find no significant electron-hole asymmetry if we consider only Neel anti-ferronagnetic response and ignore other possible orders such as stripe state. This result is robust to a moderate oxygen-site repulsion $U_p$ and to parameter sets of Nd$_2$CuO$_4$. Incorporating dopant-induced local potentials reveals an extrinsic route to asymmetry: Cu-site defects enhance AFM on the electron-doped side, whereas O-site defects suppress it on the hole-doped side. These results indicate that dopant-driven effects make a non-negligible contribution to apparent electron-hole asymmetry in the general phase diagram of cuprates and should be included when analyzing competing orders in cuprates.

Symmetry-protected topological order identified via Gutzwiller-guided density-matrix-renormalization-group: $\mathrm{SO}(n)$ spin chains

We present a comprehensive study of topological phases in the SO($n$) spin chains using a combination of analytical parton construction and numerical techniques. For even $n=2l$, we identify a novel SPT$^2$ phase characterized by two distinct topological sectors, exhibiting exact degeneracy at the matrix product state (MPS) exactly solvable point. Through Gutzwiller-projected mean-field theory and density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations, we demonstrate that these sectors remain topologically degenerate in close chains throughout the SPT$^2$ phase, with energy gaps decaying exponentially with system size. For odd $n=2l+1$, we show that the ground state remains unique in close chains. We precisely characterize critical states using entanglement entropy scaling, confirming the central charges predicted by conformal field theories. Our results reveal fundamental differences between even and odd $n$ cases, provide numerical verification of topological protection, and establish reliable methods for studying high-symmetry quantum systems. The Gutzwiller-guided DMRG is demonstrated to be notably efficient in targeting specific topological sectors.

A Promising Method for Strongly Correlated Electrons in Two Dimensions: Gutzwiller-Guided Density Matrix Renormalization Group

The study of strongly correlated electron systems remains a fundamental challenge in condensed matter physics, particularly in two-dimensional (2D) systems hosting various exotic phases of matter including quantum spin liquids, unconventional superconductivity, and topological orders. Although Density Matrix Renormalization Group (DMRG) has established itself as a pillar for simulating one-dimensional quantum systems, its application to 2D systems has long been hindered by the notorious ``local minimum'' issues. Recent methodological breakthroughs have addressed this challenge by incorporating Gutzwiller-projected wavefunctions as initial states for DMRG simulations. This hybrid approach, referred to as DMRG guided by Gutzwiller-projected wave functions (or Gutzwiller-guided DMRG), has demonstrated remarkable improvements in accuracy, efficiency, and the ability to explore exotic quantum phases such as topological orders. This review examines the theoretical underpinnings of this approach, details key algorithmic developments, and showcases its applications in recent studies of 2D quantum systems.

Ferrimagnetic Kitaev spin liquids in mixed spin 1/2 spin 3/2 honeycomb magnets

We explore the potential experimental realization of the mixed-spin Kitaev model in materials such as Zr$_{0.5}$Ru$_{0.5}$Cl$_3$, where spin-1/2 and spin-3/2 ions occupy distinct sublattices of a honeycomb lattice. By developing a superexchange theory specifically for this mixed-spin system, we identify the conditions under which dominant Kitaev-like interactions emerge. Focusing on the limiting case of pure Kitaev coupling with single-ion anisotropy, we employ a combination of superexchange theory, parton mean-field theory, and density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) simulations. We establish a comprehensive ground-state phase diagram identifying four distinct quantum spin liquid phases. Our findings highlight the importance of spin-orbital couplings and quadrupolar order parameters in stabilizing exotic phases, providing a foundation for exploring mixed-spin Kitaev magnets.

Dirac and chiral spin liquids on spin-1/2 square-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet

We revisit the challenging problem of identifying the quantum spin liquid candidate in the spin-1/2 $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the square lattice. By integrating the Gutzwiller-guided density matrix renormalization group method with analytical analyses, we present clear evidence that the ground state is a Z$_2$ Dirac spin liquid. This state can be efficiently described by a Gutzwiller-projected parton theory characterized by its projective symmetry group. To distinguish the difference between the projected Z$_2$ and U(1) parton state, we investigate the chiral spin liquid ground states as topological orders by incorporating a $J_χ$ term into the $J_1$-$J_2$ model and observe a transition from a Z$_2$ chiral spin liquid to a U(1)$_2$ chiral spin liquid as $J_χ$ increases.

Kinetic Ferromagnetism and Topological Magnons of the Hole-Doped Kitaev Spin Liquid

We study the effect of hole doping on the Kitaev spin liquid (KSL) and find that for ferromagnetic (FM) Kitaev exchange $K$ the system is very susceptible to the formation of a FM spin polarization. Through density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) simulations on finite systems, we uncover that the introduction of a single hole with a hopping strength of just $t\sim{}0.28K$ is enough to disrupt fractionalization and polarize the spins in the [001] direction due to an order-by-disorder mechanism. Taking into account a material relevant FM anisotropic spin exchange $\varGamma$ drives the polarization towards the [111] direction via a reorientation transition into a topological FM state with chiral magnon excitations. We develop a parton mean-field theory incorporating fermionic holons and bosonic spinons/magnons, which accounts for the doping induced FM phases and topological magnon excitations. We discuss experimental signatures and implications for Kitaev candidate materials.

Variational wavefunction for Mott insulator at finite $U$ using ancilla qubits

The Mott regime with finite $U$ offers a promising platform for exploring novel phases of matter, such as quantum spin liquids (QSL) that exhibit fractionalization and emergent gauge field. Here, we provide a new class wavefunction, dubbed ancilla wavefunction, to capture both charge and spin (gauge) fluctuations in QSLs at finite $U$. The ancilla wavefunction can unify the Fermi liquid and Mott insulator phases with a single variation parameter $Φ$ tuning the charge gap. As $Φ\rightarrow\infty$, the wavefunction reduces to the Gutzwiller projected state, while at $Φ=U/2$, it is effectively equivalent to applying an inverse Schrieffer-Wolff transformation to the Gutzwiller projected state. This wavefunction can be numerically simulated in the matrix product state representation, and its performance is supported by numerical results for both one- and two-dimensional Hubbard models. Besides, we propose the possibility of a narrow regime of fractional Fermi liquid phase between the usual Fermi liquid and the Mott insulator phases close to the metal insulator transition -- a scenario typically overlooked by the conventional slave rotor theory. Our ancilla wavefunction offers a novel conceptual framework and a powerful numerical tool for understanding Mott physics.

Fractionalized Prethermalization in a Driven Quantum Spin Liquid

Quantum spin liquids subject to a periodic drive can display fascinating non-equilibrium heating behavior because of their emergent fractionalized quasi-particles. Here, we investigate a driven Kitaev honeycomb model and examine the dynamics of emergent Majorana matter and $Z_2$ flux excitations. We uncover a distinct two-step heating profile $\textrm{--}$ dubbed fractionalized prethermalization $\textrm{--}$ and a quasi-stationary state with vastly different temperatures for the matter and the flux sectors. We argue that this peculiar prethermalization behavior is a consequence of fractionalization. Furthermore, we discuss an experimentally feasible protocol for preparing a zero-flux initial state of the Kiteav honeycomb model with a low energy density, which can be used to observe fractionalized prethermalization in quantum information processing platforms.

Floquet Prethermal Order by Disorder

Frustrated magnets can have accidental ground state degeneracies which may be lifted by various forms of disorder, for example in the form of thermal or quantum fluctuations. This order by disorder (ObD) paradigm is well established in equilibrium and here is generalized to Floquet many-body systems. Investigating a periodically-driven XXZ-compass model on the square lattice, we show that in a prethermal regime, dynamical fluctuations induced by high-frequency drives select a discrete set of states out of a degenerate ground state manifold of the lowest order Floquet Hamiltonian chosen as initial states. Remarkably, prior to the ObD selection, an unusual fluctuating regime emerges leading to a prethermalization timescale scaling linearly with the drive frequency. We argue that prethermal ObD with its unusual approach to the selected states is a generic phenomenon of driven frustrated systems and confirm it in the paradigmatic $J_1-J_2$ XX model.

Single-hole spectra of Kitaev spin liquids: from dynamical Nagaoka ferromagnetism to spin-hole fractionalization

The dynamical response of a quantum spin liquid upon injecting a hole is a pertinent open question. In experiments, the hole spectral function, measured momentum-resolved in angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) or locally in scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), can be used to identify spin liquid materials. In this study, we employ tensor network methods to simulate the time evolution of a single hole doped into the Kitaev spin-liquid ground state. Focusing on the gapped spin liquid phase, we reveal two fundamentally different scenarios. For ferromagnetic spin couplings, the spin liquid is highly susceptible to hole doping: a Nagaoka ferromagnet forms dynamically around the doped hole, even at weak coupling. By contrast, in the case of antiferromagnetic spin couplings, the hole spectrum demonstrates an intricate interplay between charge, spin, and flux degrees of freedom, best described by a parton mean-field ansatz of fractionalized holons and spinons. Moreover, we find a good agreement of our numerical results to the analytically solvable case of slow holes. Our results demonstrate that dynamical hole spectral functions provide rich information on the structure of fractionalized quantum spin liquids.

Possible chiral spin liquid state in the $S=1/2$ kagome Heisenberg model

The nature of the ground state for the $S = 1/2$ kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet (KHAF) has been elusive. We revisit this challenging problem and provide numerical evidence that its ground state might be a chiral spin liquid. Combining the density matrix renormalization group method and analytical analyses, we demonstrate that the previously observed chiral spin liquid phase in the KHAF with longer-range couplings is stable in a broader region. We characterize the nature of the ground state by computing energy derivatives, revealing ground-state degeneracy arising from spontaneous breaking of time-reversal symmetry, and targeting the semion sector. We further investigate the phase diagram in the vicinity of the KHAF and observe a $\sqrt{3}\times\sqrt{3}$ magnetically ordered phase and two valence-bond crystal phases.

A variational Monte Carlo approach to the SU(4) spin-orbital model on the triangular lattice

Previous investigations have suggested that the simplest spin-orbital model on the simplest frustrated lattice can host a nematic quantum spin-orbital liquid state. Namely, the orbital degeneracy of the SU(4) Kugel-Khomskii (KK) model tends to enhance quantum fluctuations and stabilize a quantum spin-orbital liquid exhibiting stripy features on the triangular lattice, as revealed by the state-of-the-art method of the density matrix renormalization group boosted by Gutzwiller projected wave functions. In this work, using the variational quantum Monte Carlo method, we have studied several spin-orbital liquid states, including a uniform $π$ flux state, three stripy states, and a plaquette state, on the $L\times{}L$ torus up to $L=24$. It turns out that one of these stripy states, called the "stripe-II" state, is energetically favored. This ground state breaks the $C_6$ symmetry of the lattice, resulting in a reduced $C_2$ symmetry and doubled unit cells, while preserving the SU(4) spin-orbital rotation symmetry. Such a nematic quantum spin-orbital liquid state can be characterized by a parton Fermi surface (FS) consisting of open orbits in the Brillouin zone, in contrast to the circular FS of the uniform $π$-flux state.

Quantum liquids of the S=3/2 Kitaev honeycomb and related Kugel-Khomskii models

The $S=3/2$ Kitaev honeycomb model (KHM) is unique among the spin-$S$ Kitaev models due to a massive ground state quasi-degeneracy that hampered previous numerical and analytical studies. In a recent work~\cite{jin2022unveiling}, we showed how an SO(6) Majorana parton mean-field theory of the $S=3/2$ isotropic KHM explains the anomalous features of this Kitaev spin liquid (KSL) in terms of an emergent low-energy Majorana flat band. Away from the isotropic limit, the $S=3/2$ KSL generally displays a quadrupolar order with gapped or gapless Majorana excitations, features that were quantitatively confirmed by DMRG simulations. In this paper, we explore the connection between the $S = 3/2$ KHM with Kugel-Khomskii models and discover new exactly soluble examples for the latter. We perform a symmetry analysis for the variational parton mean-field \emph{Ans{ä}tze} in the spin and orbital basis for different quantum liquid phases of the $S=3/2$ KHM. Finally, we investigate a proposed time-reversal symmetry breaking spin liquid induced by a {[}111{]} single ion anisotropy and elucidate its topological properties as well as experimental signatures, e.g. an unquantized thermal Hall response.
