Photonic variational quantum eigensolver using entanglement measurements

Variational quantum eigensolver (VQE), which combines quantum systems with classical computational power, has been arisen as a promising candidate for near-term quantum computing applications. However, the experimental resources such as the number of measurements to implement VQE rapidly increases as the Hamiltonian problem size grows. Applying entanglement measurements to reduce the number of measurement setups has been proposed to address this issue, however, entanglement measurements themselves can introduce additional resource demands. Here, we apply entanglement measurements to the photonic VQE utilizing polarization and path degrees of freedom of a single-photon. In our photonic VQE, entanglement measurements can be deterministically implemented using linear optics, so it takes full advantage of introducing entanglement measurements without additional experimental demands. Moreover, we show that such a setup can mitigate errors in measurement apparatus for a certain Hamiltonian.

Aluminum nitride waveguide beam splitters for integrated quantum photonic circuits

We demonstrate integrated photonic circuits for quantum devices using sputtered polycrystalline aluminum nitride (AlN) on insulator. The on-chip AlN waveguide directional couplers, which are one of the most important components in quantum photonics, are fabricated and show the output power splitting ratios from 50:50 to 99:1. The polarization beam splitters with an extinction ratio of more than 10 dB are also realized from the AlN directional couplers. Using the fabricated AlN waveguide beam splitters, we observe the Hong-Ou-Mandel interference with a visibility of 91.7 +(-) 5.66 %.

Entangling three identical particles via spatial overlap

Quantum correlations between identical particles are at the heart of quantum technologies. Several studies with two identical particles have shown that the spatial overlap and indistinguishability between the particles are necessary for generating bipartite entanglement. On the other hand, researches on the extension to more than two-particle systems are limited by the practical difficulty to control multiple identical particles in laboratories. In this work, we propose schemes to generate two fundamental classes of genuine tripartite entanglement, i.e., GHZ and W classes, which are experimentally demonstrated with three identical photons. We also show that the tripartite entanglement class decays from the genuine entanglement to the full separability as the particles become more distinguishable from each other. Our results support the prediction that particle indistinguishability is a fundamental element for entangling identical particles.

Sub-10 nm precision engineering of solid-state defects via nanoscale aperture array mask

Engineering a strongly interacting uniform qubit cluster would be a major step towards realizing a scalable quantum system for quantum sensing, and a node-based qubit register. For a solid-state system that uses a defect as a qubit, various methods to precisely position defects have been developed, yet the large-scale fabrication of qubits within the strong coupling regime at room temperature continues to be a challenge. In this work, we generate nitrogen vacancy (NV) color centers in diamond with sub-10 nm scale precision by using a combination of nanoscale aperture arrays (NAAs) with a high aspect ratio of 10 and a secondary E-beam hole pattern used as an ion-blocking mask. We perform optical and spin measurements on a small cluster of NV spins and statistically investigate the effect of the NAAs during an ion-implantation process. We discuss how this technique is effective for constructing a scalable system.

Error-mitigated photonic variational quantum eigensolver using a single-photon ququart

We report the experimental resource-efficient implementation of the variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) using four-dimensional photonic quantum states of single-photons. The four-dimensional quantum states are implemented by utilizing polarization and path degrees of freedom of a single-photon. Our photonic VQE is equipped with the quantum error mitigation (QEM) protocol that efficiently reduces the effects of Pauli noise in the quantum processing unit. We apply our photonic VQE to estimate the ground state energy of He--H$^{+}$ cation. The simulation and experimental results demonstrate that our resource-efficient photonic VQE can accurately estimate the bond dissociation curve, even in the presence of large noise in the quantum processing unit.

Implementation of a 3 x 3 directionally-unbiased linear optical multiport

Linear optical multiports are widely used in photonic quantum information processing. Naturally, these devices are directionally-biased since photons always propagate from the input ports toward the output ports. Recently, the concept of directionally-unbiased linear optical multiports was proposed. These directionally-unbiased multiports allow photons to propagate along a reverse direction, which can greatly reduce the number of required linear optical elements for complicated linear optical quantum networks. Here, we report an experimental demonstration of a 3 x 3 directionally-unbiased linear optical fiber multiport using an optical tritter and mirrors. Compared to the previous demonstration using bulk optical elements which works only with light sources with a long coherence length, our experimental directionally-unbiased 3 x 3 optical multiport does not require a long coherence length since it provides negligible optical path length differences among all possible optical trajectories. It can be a useful building block for implementing large-scale quantum walks on complex graph networks.

Global triplewise information trade-off in quantum measurement

State disturbance by a quantum measurement is at the core of foundational quantum physics and constitutes a fundamental basis of secure quantum information processing. While quantifying an information-disturbance relation has been a long-standing problem, recently verified reversibility of a quantum measurement requires to refine such a conventional information trade-off toward a complete picture of information conservation in quantum measurement. Here we experimentally demonstrate complete trade-off relations among all information contents, i.e., information gain, disturbance and reversibility in quantum measurement. By exploring various quantum measurements applied on a photonic qutrit, we observe that the information of a quantum state is split into three distinct parts accounting for the extracted, disturbed, and reversible information. We verify that such different parts of information are in trade-off relations not only pairwise but also globally all-at-once, and find that the global trade-off relation is tighter than any of the pairwise relations. Finally, we realize optimal quantum measurements that inherently preserve quantum information without loss of information, which offer wider applications in measurement-based quantum information processing.

Equitable multiparty quantum communication without a trusted third party

Multiparty quantum communication provides delightful applications including quantum cryptographic communication and quantum secret sharing. Measurement-Device-Independent (MDI) quantum communication based on the Greenberg-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) state measurement provides a practical way to implement multiparty quantum communication. With the standard spatially localized GHZ state measurement, however, information can be imbalanced among the communication parties that can cause significant problems in multiparty cryptographic communication. Here, we propose an equitable multiparty quantum communication where information balance among the communication parties is achieved without a trusted third party. Our scheme is based on the GHZ state measurement which is not spatially localized but implemented in a way that all the distant communication parties symmetrically participate. We also verify the feasibility of our scheme by presenting the proof-of-principle experimental demonstration of informationally balanced three-party quantum communication using weak coherent pulses.

Reference-Frame-Independent, Measurement-Device-Independent quantum key distribution using fewer quantum states

Reference-Frame-Independent Quantum Key Distribution (RFI-QKD) provides a practical way to generate secret keys between two remote parties without sharing common reference frames. On the other hand, Measurement-Device-Independent QKD (MDI-QKD) offers high level of security as it immunes against all the quantum hacking attempts to the measurement devices. The combination of these two QKD protocols, i.e., RFI-MDI-QKD, is one of the most fascinating QKD protocols since it holds both advantages of practicality and security. For further practicality of RFI-MDI-QKD, it is beneficial to reduce the implementation complexity. Here, we have shown that RFI-MDI-QKD can be implemented using fewer quantum states than those of its original proposal. We found that, in principle, the number of quantum states for one of the parties can be reduced from six to three without compromising security. Comparing to the conventional RFI-MDI-QKD where both parties should transmit six quantum states, it significantly simplifies the implementation of the QKD protocol. We also verify the feasibility of the scheme with the proof-of-principle experiment.

Experimental implementation of arbitrary entangled operations

Quantum entanglement lies at the heart of quantum mechanics in both fundamental and practical aspects. The entanglement of quantum states has been studied widely, however, the entanglement of operators has not been studied much in spite of its importance. Here, we propose a scheme to realize arbitrary entangled operations based on a coherent superposition of local operations. Then, we experimentally implement several intriguing two-qubit entangled operations in photonic systems. We also discuss the generalization of our scheme to extend the number of superposed operations and the number of qubits. Due to the simplicity of our scheme, we believe that it can reduce the complexity or required resources of the quantum circuits and provide insights to investigate properties of entangled operations.

Entangling Bosons through Particle Indistinguishability and Spatial Overlap

Particle identity and entanglement are two fundamental quantum properties that work as major resources for various quantum information tasks. However, it is still a challenging problem to understand the correlation of the two properties in the same system. While recent theoretical studies have shown that the spatial overlap between identical particles is necessary for nontrivial entanglement, the exact role of particle indistinguishability in the entanglement of identical particles has never been analyzed quantitatively before. Here, we theoretically and experimentally investigate the behavior of entanglement between two bosons as spatial overlap and indistinguishability simultaneously vary. The theoretical computation of entanglement for generic two bosons with pseudospins is verified experimentally in a photonic system. Our results show that the amount of entanglement is a monotonically increasing function of both quantities. We expect that our work provides an insight into deciphering the role of the entanglement in quantum networks that consist of identical particles.

Efficient generation of multipartite W state via quantum eraser

Entanglement among multiple particles is a keystone for not only fundamental research on quantum information but also various practical quantum information applications. In particular, W state has attracted a lot of attention due to the robustness against particle loss and the applications in multiparty quantum communication. However, it is challenging to generate photonic W state with large number of photons since N-photon W state requires superposition among N probability amplitudes. In this paper, we propose an efficient linear optical scheme to generate N-photon W state via quantum erasure. The success probability of our protocol polynomially decreases as the number of photons increase. We also discuss the experimental feasibility of our protocol, and anticipate that one can efficiently generate tens of photonic W state with our scheme using currently available quantum photonics technologies.

Strong interactions between dipolar polaritons

Nonperturbative coupling between cavity photons and excitons leads to formation of hybrid light-matter excitations termed polaritons. In structures where photon absorption leads to creation of excitons with aligned permanent dipoles, the elementary excitations, termed dipolar polaritons, are expected to exhibit enhanced interactions. Here, we report a substantial increase in interaction strength between dipolar polaritons as the size of the dipole is increased by tuning the applied gate voltage. To this end, we use coupled quantum well structures embedded inside a microcavity where coherent electron tunneling between the wells controls the size of the excitonic dipole. Modifications of the interaction strength are characterized by measuring the changes in the reflected intensity of light when polaritons are driven with a resonant laser. Factor of 6.5 increase in the interaction strength to linewidth ratio that we obtain indicates that dipolar polaritons could be used to demonstrate a polariton blockade effect and thereby form the building blocks of many-body states of light.

Reversed interplay of quantum interference and which-way information in multi-photon entangled states

We report experimental studies of the multi-photon quantum interference of a two-mode three-photon entangled Fock state $|2, 1\rangle$ + $|1, 2\rangle$ impinging on a two-port balanced beam splitter. When the distinguishability between the two input paths is increased, we observe a reduction followed by a resurgence of the quantum interference signal. We ascribe this unusual behavior to the competition among contributions from distinct numbers of interfering photons. Our theoretical analysis shows that this phenomenon will occur for any entangled Fock-state input of the form $|N, M\rangle$ + $|M, N\rangle$ where M, N > 0. Our results are an indication that wave-particle duality may give rise to a wide range of, largely unexplored, phenomena in multi-particle interference.

Generation of a non-zero discord bipartite state with classical second-order interference

We report investigation on quantum discord in classical second-order interference. In particular, we theoretically show that a bipartite state with D = 0.311 of discord can be generated via classical second-order interference. We also experimentally verify the theory by obtaining D = 0.197 +- 0.060 of non-zero discord state. Together with the fact that non-classicalities originated from physical constraints and information theoretic perspectives are not equivalent, this result provides an insight to understand the nature of quantum discord.

Electrically tunable artificial gauge potential for polaritons

Neutral particles subject to artificial gauge potentials can behave as charged particles in magnetic fields. This fascinating premise has led to demonstrations of one-way waveguides, topologically protected edge states and Landau levels for photons. In ultracold neutral atoms effective gauge fields have allowed the emulation of matter under strong magnetic fields leading to realization of Harper-Hofstadter and Haldane models. Here we show that application of perpendicular electric and magnetic fields effects a tuneable artificial gauge potential for two-dimensional microcavity exciton polaritons. For verification, we perform interferometric measurement of the associated phase accumulated during coherent polariton transport. Since the gauge potential originates from the magnetoelectric Stark effect, it can be realized for photons strongly coupled to excitations in any polarizable medium. Together with strong polariton- polariton interactions and engineered polariton lattices, artificial gauge fields could play a key role in investigation of non-equilibrium dynamics of strongly correlated photons.

Remote preparation of three-photon entangled states via single-photon measurement

Remote state preparation (RSP) provides an indirect way of manipulating quantum information based on the nonlocal effect of quantum measurement. Although RSP has been demonstrated in recent years to remotely prepare multi-photon states, quantum measurement on the same number of photons was required, i.e., to prepare N-photon states via RSP, quantum measurement on the other N-photons was required, hence significantly limiting practicality and applicability of RSP. Here we report the first experimental demonstration of remote preparation of three-photon entangled states by measuring only a single-photon entangled with the three photons. We further generalize our protocol to prepare multi-photon entangled states with arbitrary photon number and purity via single-photon measurement. As our RSP scheme relies on the nonlinearity induced by single-photon measurement, it enables quantum state engineering of multi-photon entangled states beyond the linear optical limit. Our results are expected to have significant impacts on quantum metrology and quantum information processing.

Quantum discord protection from amplitude damping decoherence

Entanglement is known to be an essential resource for many quantum information processes. However, it is now known that some quantum features may be acheived with quantum discord, a generalized measure of quantum correlation. In this paper, we study how quantum discord, or more specifically, the measures of entropic discord and geometric discord are affected by the influence of amplitude damping decoherence. We also show that a protocol deploying weak measurement and quantum measurement reversal can effectively protect quantum discord from amplitude damping decoherence, enabling to distribute quantum correlation between two remote parties in a noisy environment.
