Ferroelectricity in the Magnetic E-Phase of Orthorhombic Perovskites

We show that the symmetry of the spin zigzag chain E phase of the orthorhombic perovskite manganites and nickelates allows for the existence of a finite ferroelectric polarization. The proposed microscopic mechanism is independent of spin-orbit coupling. We predict that the polarization induced by the E-type magnetic order can potentially be enhanced by up to two orders of magnitude with respect to that in the spiral magnetic phases of TbMnO3 and similar multiferroic compounds.

Universal emergence of the one-third plateau in the magnetization process of frustrated quantum spin chains

We present a numerical study of the magnetization process of frustrated quantum spin-S chains with S=1, 3/2, 2 as well as the classical limit. Using the exact diagonalization and density-matrix renormalization techniques, we provide evidence that a plateau at one third of the saturation magnetization exists in the magnetization curve of frustrated spin-S chains with S>1/2. Similar to the case of S=1/2, this plateau state breaks the translational symmetry of the Hamiltonian and realizes an up-up-down pattern in the spin component parallel to the external field. Our study further shows that this plateau exists both in the cases of an isotropic exchange and in the easy-axis regime for spin-S=1, 3/2, and 2, but is absent in classical frustrated spin chains with isotropic interactions. We discuss the magnetic phase diagram of frustrated spin-1 and spin-3/2 chains as well as other emergent features of the magnetization process such as kink singularities, jumps, and even-odd effects. A quantitative comparison of the one-third plateau in the easy-axis regime between spin-1 and spin-3/2 chains on the one hand and the classical frustrated chain on the other hand indicates that the critical frustration and the phase boundaries of this state rapidly approach the classical result as the spin S increases.

Superconducting gap nodes in PrOs_4Sb_12

We examine the superconducting gap nodes in crystals with tetrahedral (T_h) symmetry. The (0,0,1) phase of the three dimensional order parameter in the triplet channel has nodes in the [001] directions. Following a second order phase transition to the state (0,i|eta_2|,|eta_1|), each node lifts away from the Fermi surface and splits into two deep dips. We discuss this scenario in the context of multiple superconducting phases in PrOs4Sb12.

Role of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in multiferroic perovskites

With the perovskite multiferroic RMnO3 (R = Gd, Tb, Dy) as guidance, we argue that the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) provides the microscopic mechanism for the coexistence and strong coupling between ferroelectricity and incommensurate magnetism. We use Monte-Carlo simulations and zero temperature exact calculations to study a model incorporating the double-exchange, superexchange, Jahn-Teller and DMI terms. The phase diagram contains a multiferroic phase between A and E antiferromagnetic phases, in excellent agreement with experiments.

Study of the One- and Two-Band Models for Colossal Magnetoresistive Manganites Using the Truncated Polynomial Expansion Method

Considerable progress has been recently made in the theoretical understanding of the colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) effect in manganites. The analysis of simple models with two competing states and a resistor network approximation to calculate conductances has confirmed that CMR effects can be theoretically reproduced using non-uniform clustered states. In this paper, the recently proposed Truncated Polynomial Expansion method (TPEM) for spin-fermion systems is tested using the double-exchange one-band, with finite Hund coupling $J_{\rm H}$, and two-band, with infinite $J_{\rm H}$, models. Two dimensional lattices as large as 48$\times$48 are studied, far larger than those that can be handled with standard exact diagonalization (DIAG) techniques for the fermionic sector. The clean limit (i.e. without quenched disorder) is here analyzed in detail. Phase diagrams are obtained, showing first-order transitions separating ferromagnetic metallic from insulating states. A huge magnetoresistance is found at low temperatures by including small magnetic fields, in excellent agreement with experiments. However, at temperatures above the Curie transition the effect is much smaller confirming that the standard finite-temperature CMR phenomenon cannot be understood using homogeneous states. By comparing results between the two methods, TPEM and DIAG, on small lattices, and by analyzing the systematic behavior with increasing cluster sizes, it is concluded that the TPEM is accurate to handle realistic manganite models on large systems. Our results pave the way to a frontal computational attack of the colossal magnetoresistance phenomenon using double-exchange like models, on large clusters, and including quenched disorder.

Goldstone-Mode Phonon Dynamics in the Pyrochlore Cd2Re2O7

We have measured the polarized Raman scattering spectra of Cd2Re2O7, the first superconducting pyrochlore, as a function of temperature. For temperatures below the cubic-to-tetragonal structural phase transition (SPT) at 200K, a peak with B1 symmetry develops at zero frequency with divergent intensity. We identify this peak as the first observation of the Goldstone phonon in a crystalline solid. The Goldstone phonon is a collective excitation that exists due to the breaking of the continuous symmetry with the SPT. Its emergence coincides with that of a Raman-active soft mode. The order parameter for both features derives from an unstable doubly-degenerate vibration (with Eu symmetry) of the O1 atoms which drives the SPT.

Order parameter in superconductors with non-degenerate bands

In noncentrosymmetric metals, the spin degeneracy of the electronic bands is lifted by spin-orbit coupling. We consider general symmetry properties of the pairing function Delta(k) in noncentrosymmetric superconductors with spin-orbit coupling (NSC), including CePt3Si, UIr and Cd2Re2O7. We find that Delta(k) = chi(k) t(k), where chi(k) is an even function which transforms according to the irreducible representations of the crystallographic point group and t(k) is a model dependent phase factor. We consider tunnelling between a NSC and a conventional superconductor. It is found that, in terms of thermodynamical properties as well as the Josephson effect, the state of NSC resembles a singlet superconducting state with gap function chi(k).

Are Th doped Y2C3 and La2C3 two-band superconductors?

The superconducting sesquicarbides R2C3 have noncentrosymmetric point group symmetry Td. Spin-orbit coupling lifts the spin degeneracy of electronic bands in the most of the Brillouin zone. Nevertheless, due to high symmetry, there are a few directions along which the Fermi surfaces must touch. This leads to the two-band effects in the superconducting state.

Landau theory of superconducting phases in T_h crystals

We consider the Landau theory of phase transitions for multiple superconducting phases in T_h crystals. All possible phase transition sequences involving a single superconducting order parameter are found. These results may be applicable to PrOs4Sb12.

Mixed-parity superconductivity in centrosymmetric crystals

A weak-coupling formalism for superconducting states possessing both singlet (even parity) and triplet (odd parity) components of the order parameter in centrosymmetric crystals is developed. It is shown that the quasiparticle energy spectrum may be non-degenerate even if the triplet component is unitary. The superconducting gap of a mixed-parity state may have line nodes in the strong spin-orbit coupling limit. The pseudospin carried by the superconducting electrons is calculated, from which follows a prediction of a kink anomaly in the temperature dependence of muon spin relaxation rate. The anomaly occurs at the phase boundary between the bare triplet and mixed-parity states. The stability of mixed-parity states is discussed within Ginzburg-Landau theory. The results may have immediate application to the superconducting series Pr(Os,Ru)4Sb12.

Superconducting states in the tetrahedral compound PrOs4Sb12

We find possible superconducting states for tetrahedral (Th) symmetry crystals with strong spin-orbit coupling using Landau theory. Additional symmetry breaking within the superconducting state is considered. We discuss nodes of the gap functions for the different states, secondary superconducting order parameters and coupling to the elastic strain. By comparing our results to experiments, we find that superconductivity in PrOs4Sb12 is best described by the three-dimensional representations of point group Th.

Metallic "Ferroelectricity" in the Pyrochlore Cd2Re2O7

A class of materials known as ``ferroelectric metals'' was discussed theoretically by Anderson and Blount in 1965 [Phys. Rev. Lett. 14, 217 (1965)], but to date no examples of this class have been reported. Here we present measurements of the elastic moduli of Cd2Re2O7 through the 200 K cubic-to-tetragonal phase transition. A Landau analysis of the moduli reveals that the transition is consistent with Cd2Re2O7 being classified as a ``ferroelectric metal'' in the weaker sense described by Anderson and Blount (loss of a center of symmetry). First-principles calculations of the lattice instabilities indicate that the dominant lattice instability corresponds to a two-fold degenerate mode with Eu symmetry, and that motions of the O ions forming the O octahedra dominate the energetics of the transition.

Structural order parameter and itinerant electron magnetism in Cd2Re2O7

We describe the low temperature behaviour of the magnetic susceptibility of Cd2Re2O7 in terms of a Landau theory of structural phase transitions. We calculate the zero temperature Pauli susceptibility using a tight-binding approach to reveal the mechanism of coupling between the structural order parameter and itinerant magnetism.

Structural Order Parameter in the Pyrochlore Superconductor Cd2Re2O7

It is shown that both structural phase transitions in Cd2Re2O7, which occur at T_{s1}=200 K and T_{s2}=120 K, are due to an instability of the Re tetrahedral network with respect to the same doubly degenerate long-wavelength phonon mode. The primary structural order parameter transforms according to the irreducible representation E_u of the point group O_h. We argue that the transition at T_{s1} may be of second order, in accordance with experimental data. We obtain the phase diagram in the space of phenomenological parameters and propose a thermodynamic path that Cd2Re2O7 follows upon cooling. Couplings of the itinerant electronic system and localized spin states in pyrochlores and spinels to atomic displacements are discussed.

Phenomenological theory of phase transitions in highly piezoelectric perovskites

Recently discovered fine structure of the morphotropic phase boundaries in highly piezoelectric mixture compounds PZT, PMN-PT, and PZN-PT demonstrates the importance of highly non-linear interactions in these systems. We show that an adequate Landau-type description of the ferroelectric phase transitions in these compounds is achieved by the use of a twelfth-order expansion of the Landau potential in terms of the phenomenological order parameter. Group-theoretical and catastrophe-theory methods are used in constructing the appropriate Landau potential. A complete phase diagram is calculated in phenomenological parameter space. The theory describes both PZT and PZN-PT types of phase diagrams, including the newly found monoclinic and orthorhombic phases. Anomalously large piezoelectric coefficients are predicted in the vicinity of the phase transition lines.
