Optical diode based on exciton-polaritons

We propose theoretically an optical diode based on exciton-polaritons in semiconductor microcavities. A flow of polaritons in the bistable regime is used to send signals through an asymmetric fixed potential that favours the tunneling of particles in one direction. Through dynamic modelling of the coherent polariton field, we demonstrate the characteristics of an ideal diode, namely that the forward signal is fully transmitted while the transmission in the reverse direction tends to zero, without any additional external control. Moreover, the system proves to be robust to the presence of disorder, intrinsic to microcavities, and can function at gigahertz repetition rates.

Continuous THz emission from dipolaritons

We propose a scheme of continuous tunable THz emission based on dipolaritons --- mixtures of strongly interacting cavity photons and direct excitons, where the latter are coupled to indirect excitons via tunnelling. We investigate the property of multistability under continuous wave (CW) pumping, and the stability of the solutions. We establish the conditions of parametric instability, giving rise to oscillations in density between the direct exciton and indirect modes under CW pumping. In this way we achieve continuous and tunable emission in the THz range in a compact single-crystal device. We show that the emission frequency can be tuned in a certain range by varying an applied electric field and pumping conditions. Finally, we demonstrate the dynamic switching between different phases in our system, allowing rapid control of THz radiation.

The graphene sheet versus the 2DEG: a relativistic Fano spin-filter via STM and AFM tips

We explore theoretically the density of states (LDOS) probed by an STM tip of 2D systems hosting an adatom and a subsurface impurity, both capacitively coupled to AFM tips and traversed by antiparallel magnetic fields. Two kinds of setups are analyzed, a monolayer of graphene and a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG). The AFM tips set the impurity levels at the Fermi energy, where two contrasting behaviors emerge: the Fano factor for the graphene diverges, while in the 2DEG it approaches zero. As result, the spin-degeneracy of the LDOS is lifted exclusively in the graphene system, in particular for the asymmetric regime of Fano interference. The aftermath of this limit is a counterintuitive phenomenon, which consists of a dominant Fano factor due to the subsurface impurity even with a stronger STM-adatom coupling. Thus we find a full polarized conductance, achievable just by displacing vertically the position of the STM tip. To the best knowledge, our work is the first to propose the Fano effect as the mechanism to filter spins in graphene. This feature arises from the massless Dirac electrons within the band structure and allows us to employ the graphene host as a relativistic Fano spin-filter.

Spin transport in Aharonov-Bohm ring with exchange interaction

We investigate spin-dependent conductance through a quantum Aharonov-Bohm ring containing localized electrons which interact with the propagating flow of electrons via exchange interaction of the ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic type. We analyze the conductance oscillations as a function of both the chemical potential determined by the concentration of the carriers and external magnetic field. It is demonstrated that the amplitude of the conductance oscillations in the ballistic regime is governed by the value of the non-compensated spin localized in the ring. The results are in agreement with the concept of fractional quantization of the ballistic conductance, proposed by us earlier [Phys. Rev. B 71,113311 (2005)].

Optomechanics with Cavity Polaritons: Dissipative Coupling and Unconventional Bistability

We study a hybrid system formed from an optomechanical resonator and a cavity mode strongly coupled to an excitonic transition inside a quantum well. We show that due to the mixing of cavity photon and exciton states, the emergent quasiparticles - polaritons - possess coupling to the mechanical mode of both dispersive and dissipative nature. We calculate the occupancies of polariton modes and reveal bistable behavior, which deviates from conventional Kerr nonlinearity or dispersive coupling cases due to the dissipative coupling. The described system serves as a good candidate for future polaritonic devices and solid state quantum information processing.

Theory of an excitonic THz laser with two-photon excitation

We consider theoretically THz lasing in a system consisting of a quantum well placed inside an optical microcavity and a THz cavity in the regime of two-photon excitation of 2p dark exciton states. The stability of the system with varying parameters of the microcavity under coherent pumping is studied. We show that the nonlinearity provided by two photon absorption can give rise to bistability and hysteresis in the THz output.

Persistent current induced by vacuum fluctuations in a quantum ring

We study theoretically interaction between electrons in a quantum ring embedded in a microcavity and vacuum fluctuations of electromagnetic field in the cavity. It is shown that the vacuum fluctuations can split electron states of the ring with opposite angular momenta. As a consequence, the ground state of electron system in the quantum ring can be associated to nonzero electric current. Since a ground-state current flows without dissipation, such a quantum ring gets a magnetic moment and can be treated as an artificial spin.

Nonlinear Effects in Multi-Photon Polaritonics

We consider theoretically nonlinear effects in a semiconductor quantum well embedded inside a photonic microcavity. Two-photon absorption by a 2p exciton state is considered and investigated; the matrix element of two-photon absorption is calculated. We compute the emission spectrum of the sample and demonstrate that under coherent pumping the nonlinearity of the two photon absorption process gives rise to bistability.

Magnetic Field Control of the Optical Spin Hall Effect

We investigate theoretically the effect of an external magnetic field on polarization patterns appearing in quantum microcavities due to the optical spin Hall effect (OSHE). We show that increase of the magnetic field perpendicular to the plane of the cavity resulting in the increase of the Zeeman splitting leads to the transition from azimuthal separation of polarizations to their radial separation. This effect can be straightforwardly detected experimentally.

Bistability phenomena in one-dimensional polariton wires

We investigate the phenomena of bistability and domain wall propagation in polaritonic systems with dissipation provided by the interaction with incoherent phonon bath. The results on the temperature dependence of the polariton bistability behavior and polariton neuron switching are presented.

Nonlinear Terahertz Emission in Semiconductor Microcavities

We consider the nonlinear terahertz emission by the system of cavity polaritons in the regime of polariton lasing. To account for the quantum nature of terahertz-polariton coupling we use the Lindblad master equation approach and demonstrate that quantum microcavities reveal rich variety of the nonlinear phenomena in terahertz range, including bistability, short THz pulse generation and THz switching.

Stochastic Gross-Pitaevskii Equation for the Dynamical Thermalization of Bose-Einstein Condensates

We present a theory for the description of energy relaxation in a nonequilibrium condensate of bosonic particles. The approach is based on coupling to a thermal bath of other particles (e.g., phonons in a crystal, or noncondensed atoms in a cold atom system), which are treated with a Monte Carlo type approach. Together with a full account of particle-particle interactions, dynamic driving, and particle loss, this offers a complete description of recent experiments in which Bose-Einstein condensates are seen to relax their energy as they propagate in real space and time. As an example, we apply the theory to the solid-state system of microcavity exciton polaritons, in which nonequilibrium effects are particularly prominent.

Giant Rabi splitting in metallic cluster-cavity system

We investigate theoretically the photo absorbtion of the cluster of alkali atoms embedded into a single mode quantum microcavity. We show that when the energy of the giant plasmonic resonance lies close to the energy of the cavity mode, the strong coupling between plasmon and cavity photon can occur, which is characterized by mode anticrossing and observation of the doublet structure in ptotoabsorbtion. The characteristic values of the Rabi splitting are expected to be several orders of magnitude larger then those observed in single quantum dot-cavity systems.

Density-matrix approach for an interacting polariton system

Using the Lindblad approach we develop a general formalism for theoretical description of a spatially inhomogeneous bosonic system with dissipation provided by the interaction of bosons with a phonon bath. We apply our results to model the dynamics of an interacting one-dimensional polariton system in real space and time, analyzing in detail the role of polariton-polariton and polariton-phonon interactions.

Spin multistability in dissipative polariton channels

We present a model for theoretical description of the dynamics of a system of spinor cavity polaritons in real space and time accounting for all relevant types of the interactions and effective magnetic fields. We apply our general formalism for the consideration of the polarization dynamics of the coherently driven one dimensional polariton channel. We investigate effect of the temperature and the longitudinal-transverse splitting on the spin (polarization) multistability and hysteresis arising from the polarization-dependent polariton-polariton interaction. We show that the effect of the phase of the driving laser pump is as important as its strength and demonstrate that the multistability behavior can survive up to high temperatures in presence of longitudinal-transverse splitting.

One-dimensional Van Hove polaritons

We study the light-matter coupling of microcavity photons and an interband transition in a one-dimensional (1D) nanowire. Due to the Van Hove singularity in the density of states, resulting in a resonant character of the absorption line, the achievement of strong coupling becomes possible even without the formation of a bound state of an electron and a hole. The calculated absorption in the system and corresponding energy spectrum reveal anticrossing behavior characteristic of the formation of polariton modes. In contrast to the case of conventional exciton polaritons, the formation of 1D Van Hove polaritons will not be restricted to low temperatures and can be realized in any system with a singularity in the density of states.

Aharonov-Bohm quantum rings in high-Q microcavities

A single-mode microcavity with an embedded Aharonov-Bohm quantum ring, which is pierced by a magnetic flux and subjected to a lateral electric field, is studied theoretically. It is shown that external electric and magnetic fields provide additional means of control of the emission spectrum of the system. In particular, when the magnetic flux through the quantum ring is equal to a half-integer number of the magnetic flux quantum, a small change in the lateral electric field allows tuning of the energy levels of the quantum ring into resonance with the microcavity mode providing an efficient way to control the quantum ring-microcavity coupling strength. Emission spectra of the system are calculated for several combinations of the applied magnetic and electric fields.

Hall effect for indirect excitons in an inhomogeneous magnetic field

We study the effect of non-homogeneous out-of-plane magnetic field on the behaviour of 2D spatially indirect excitons. Due to the difference of magnetic field acting on electrons and holes the total Lorentz force affecting the center of mass motion of an indirect exciton appears. Consequently, an indirect exciton acquires an effective charge proportional to the gradient of the magnetic field. The appearance of the Lorentz force causes the Hall effect for neutral bosons which can be detected by measurement of the spatially inhomogeneous blueshift of the photoluminescence using counter-flow experiment.
