Parametric Inversion of Spin Currents in Semiconductor Microcavities

The optical spin-Hall effect results in the formation of an antisymmetric real space polarization pattern forming spin currents. In this paper, we show that the exciton-polariton parametric scattering allows us to reverse the sign of these currents. We describe the pulsed resonant excitation of a strongly coupled microcavity with a linearly polarized pump at normal incidence. The energy of the pulse is set to be close to the inflexion point of the polariton dispersion and the focusing in real space populates the reciprocal space on a ring. For pumping powers below the parametric scattering threshold, the propagation of the injected polaritons in the effective magnetic field induced by the TE and TM splitting produce the normal optical spin-Hall effect. Keeping the same input polarization but increasing the pump intensity, the parametric scattering towards an idler and a signal state is triggered on the whole elastic circle. The injected particles are scattered toward these states while propagating radially all over the plane, gaining a cross linear polarisation with respect to the pump during the nonlinear process. Eventually, the propagation of the polaritons in the effective field results in the optical spin Hall-effect, but this time with inverted polarization domains.

Intersubband polaritons with spin-orbit interaction

We investigate intersubband polaritons formed in the asymmetric quantum well (AQW) embedded into the semiconductor microcavity and study the effects of spin-orbit interaction (SOI) acting on intersubband excitations. The spin-orbit interaction of Rashba and Dresselhaus type remove the spin degeneracy of electrons with finite value of in-plane momentum and allow four types of intersubband excitations. While optical spin-flip transitions are suppressed, the spectrum of elementary excitations shows the appearance of upper, lower and middle polaritonic branches based on spin-conserving transitions. The accounting of finite photon momentum leads to non-zero average spin projection of electronic ensemble in the first excited subband under cw excitation for both isotropic (Rashba) and anisotropic (Rashba and Dresselhaus) SOI. We predict the possibility of spin current generation in the considered systems with long coherence length.

Functional renormalization group approach to the singlet-triplet transition in quantum dots

We present a functional renormalization group approach to the zero bias transport properties of a quantum dot with two different orbitals and in presence of Hund's coupling. Tuning the energy separation of the orbital states, the quantum dot can be driven through a singlet-triplet transition. Our approach, based on the approach by Karrasch {\em et al} which we apply to spin-dependent interactions, recovers the key characteristics of the quantum dot transport properties with very little numerical effort. We present results on the conductance in the vicinity of the transition and compare our results both with previous numerical renormalization group results and with predictions of the perturbative renormalization group.

BCS pairing in fully repulsive fermion mixtures

We consider a mixture of two neutral cold Fermi gases with repulsive interactions. We show that in some region of the parameter space of the system the effective attraction between fermions of the same type can appear due to the exchange of collective excitations. This leads to the formation of BCS pairing in the case where bare inter-atomic interactions are repulsive.

Transmutation from Skyrmions to Half-Solitons Driven by the Nonlinear Optical Spin-Hall Effect

We show that the polarization domains generated in the linear optical spin-Hall effect by the analog of spin-orbit interaction for exciton-polaritons are associated with the formation of a Skyrmion lattice. In the non-linear regime, the spin anisotropy of the polariton-polariton interactions results in a spatial compression of the spin domains and in an abrupt transformation of the Skyrmions into half-solitons, associated with both the focalization of the spin currents and the emergence of a strongly anisotropic emission pattern.

Bosonic Cascade Laser

We propose a concept of a quantum cascade laser based on transitions of bosonic quasiparticles (excitons and exciton-polaritons) in a parabolic potential trap in a semiconductor microcavity. This laser would emit terahertz radiation due to bosonic stimulation of excitonic transitions. Dynamics of a bosonic cascade is strongly different from the dynamics of a conventional fermionic cascade laser. We show that populations of excitonic ladders are parity-dependent and quantized if the laser operates without an external terahertz cavity.

Asymmetric quantum dot in microcavity as a nonlinear optical element

We have investigated theoretically the interaction between individual quantum dot with broken inversion symmetry and electromagnetic field of a single-mode quantum microcavity. It is shown that in the strong coupling regime the system demonstrates nonlinear optical properties and can serve as emitter of the terahertz radiation at Rabi frequency of the system. Analytical results for simplest physical situations are obtained and numerical quantum approach for calculating emission spectrum is developed.

Spin-orbit coupled cold exciton condensates

We analyze theoretically the dynamics of degenerate condensate of cold indirect excitons. We account for both linear spin dependent terms arising from spin-orbit interaction of Rashba and Dresselhaus types and non-linear terms transforming a pair of bright excitons into a pair of dark ones. We show that both terms should lead to the qualitative changes in the dynamics of cold exciton droplets in the real space and time.

Vertical cavity surface emitting terahertz laser

Vertical cavity surface emitting terahertz lasers can be realized in conventional semiconductor microcavities with embedded quantum wells in the strong coupling regime. The cavity is to be pumped optically at half the frequency of the 2p exciton state. Once a threshold population of 2p excitons is achieved, a stimulated terahertz transition populates the lower exciton-polariton branch, and the cavity starts emitting laser light both in the optical and terahertz ranges. The lasing threshold is sensitive to the statistics of photons of the pumping light.

Electric generation of vortices in an exciton-polariton superfluid

We have theoretically demonstrated the on demand electric generation of vortices in an exciton-polariton superfluid. Electric pulses applied to a horseshoe-shaped metallic mesa, deposited on top of the microcavity, generate a non-cylindrically symmetric solitonic wave in the system. Breakdown of its wavefront at focal points leads to the formation of vortex-antivortex pairs which subsequently propagate in the superfluid. The trajectory of these vortex dipoles can be controlled by applying a voltage to additional electrodes. They can be confined within channels formed by metallic stripes and unbound by a wedged mesa giving birth to grey solitons. Finally single static vortices can be generated using a single metallic plate configuration.

Pseudospin dynamics in multimode polaritonic Josephson junctions

We analyzed multimode Josephson junctions with exciton-polaritons (polaritonic Josephson junctions) when several coupling mechanisms of fundamental and excited states are present. The applied method is based on Keldysh-Green function formalism and takes into account polariton pseudospin. We found that mean value of circular polarization degree in intrinsic Josephson oscillations and microscopic quantum self-trapping follow an oscillator behavior whose renormalizes due to intermode interactions. The effect of an additional transfer of particles over junction barrier occurring in multimode approximation in combination with common Josephson tunneling is discussed in regime of dynamical separation of two polarizations.

Band gap in graphene induced by vacuum fluctuations

The electrons in undoped graphene behave as massless Dirac fermions. Therefore graphene can serve as an unique condensed-matter laboratory for the study of various relativistic effects, including quantum electrodynamics (QED) phenomena. Although theoretical models describing electronic properties of graphene have been elaborated in details, the QED effects were usually neglected. In this paper we demonstrate theoretically that QED can drastically modify electronic properties of graphene. We predict the following QED effect - the opening of the band gap in a graphene monolayer placed inside a planar microcavity filled with an optically active media. We show that this phenomenon occurs due to the vacuum fluctuations of the electromagnetic field and is similar to such a well-known phenomenon as a vacuum-induced splitting of atomic levels (the Lamb shift). We estimate the characteristic value of the band gap and find that it can sufficiently exceed the value of the Lamb shift.

Angle-resolved reflectance and surface plasmonics of the MAX phases

We investigate theoretically the optical response of bulk samples and thin films of the MAX phases materials, accounting for their large electrical anisotropy. We reveal the unusual behaviour of the reflection and transmittion spectra as a function of the incidence angle and predict the effect of the inverse total internal reflection. We also investigate the behaviour of the surface plasmon modes in bulk samples and thin films and analyse the difference between MAX materials and conventional metals.

Excitons in narrow-gap carbon nanotubes

We calculate the exciton binding energy in single-walled carbon nanotubes with narrow band gaps, accounting for the quasi-relativistic dispersion of electrons and holes. Exact analytical solutions of the quantum relativistic two-body problem are obtain for several limiting cases. We show that the binding energy scales with the band gap, and conclude on the basis of the data available for semiconductor nanotubes that there is no transition to an excitonic insulator in quasi-metallic nanotubes and that their THz applications are feasible.

Coherent interactions between phonons and exciton or exciton-polariton condensates

We analyse the interaction of exciton and exciton-polariton condensates in semiconductor microcavity with a coherent acoustic wave. An analytical solution for the dispersion of excitations of coupled condensate-phonon system is found in the approximation of k-independent interactions. Accounting for k-dependence results in a stronger modification of the dispersion, and even in the appearance of the "roton instability" region.

Elementary excitations in spinor polariton- electron systems

We consider effective interactions in a 2D hybrid polariton- electron system and calculate dispersion of elementary excitations accounting the spin degree of freedom of the particles. Due to the crucial role played by the exchange term in polariton- electron interactions the dispersions of this system become spin- dependent and show unusual behavior. The coupling of the excitations of the condensate with 2D plasmon can result in appearence of roton minimum in the dispersion and destruction of the condensate for close enough situated quantum wells with electrons and excitons.

Spin-to-Orbital Angular Momentum Conversion in Semiconductor Microcavities

We experimentally demonstrate a technique for the generation of optical beams carrying orbital angular momentum using a planar semiconductor microcavity. Despite being isotropic systems, the transverse electric - transverse magnetic (TE-TM) polarization splitting featured by semiconductor microcavities allows for the conversion of the circular polarization of an incoming laser beam into the orbital angular momentum of the transmitted light field. The process implies the formation of topological entities, a pair of optical half-vortices, in the intracavity field.

Superconductivity with excitons and polaritons

A Bose--Einstein condensate of exciton polaritons coexisting with a Fermi gas of electrons has been recently proposed as a promising system for realisation of room-temperature superconductivity [Phys. Rev. Lett., 104, 106402 (2010)]. In order to find the optimum conditions for exciton and exciton-polariton mediated superconductivity, we study the attractive mechanism between electrons of a Cooper pair mediated by the exciton and exciton-polariton condensate and analyze the gap equation that follows. We specifically address microcavities with embedded n-doped quantum wells as well as coupled quantum wells hosting a condensate of spatially indirect excitons, put in contact with a two-dimensional electron gas. We show that engineering of the interaction in these peculiar Bose-Fermi mixtures is complex and sometimes counterintuitive, but leaves much freedom for optimization, making promising the realization of high-temperature superconductivity in multilayer semiconductor structures.
