Indirect exchange interaction between magnetic impurities near the helical edge

The indirect exchange interaction between magnetic impurities located in the bulk of a two-dimensional topological insulator decays exponentially with the distance. The indirect exchange interaction for magnetic impurities mediated by the helical states at the edge of the topological insulator demonstrates behaviour which is typical for the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interaction in a one-dimensional metal. We have shown that interference between the bulk and edge states in the two-dimensional topological insulator results in existence of the unusual contribution to the indirect exchange interaction which, on the one hand, decays exponentially with a distance at the length scale controlled by the Fermi energy of the edge states and, on the other hand, oscillates with distance along the helical edge with the period determined by the Fermi wave length. We found that this interference contribution to the indirect exchange interaction becomes dominant for such configurations of two magnetic impurities when one of them is situated close to the helical edge whereas the other one is located far away in the bulk.

Transport in a two-dimensional disordered electron liquid with isospin degrees of freedom

Recent theoretical results on transport in a two-dimensional disordered electron liquid with spin and isospin degrees of freedom are reviewed. A number of experimental features in temperature dependence of resistivity at low temperatures in Si-MOSFET, n-AlAs quantum well and double quantum well heterostructures is explained. Novel behavior of low-temperature resistivity at low temperature in electron systems with isospin degrees of freedom are predicted.

Quantum elasticity of graphene: Thermal expansion coefficient and specific heat

We explore thermodynamics of a quantum membrane, with a particular application to suspended graphene membrane and with a particular focus on the thermal expansion coefficient. We show that an interplay between quantum and classical anharmonicity-controlled fluctuations leads to unusual elastic properties of the membrane. The effect of quantum fluctuations is governed by the dimensionless coupling constant, $g_0 \ll 1$, which vanishes in the classical limit ($\hbar \to 0$) and is equal to $\simeq 0.05$ for graphene. We demonstrate that the thermal expansion coefficient $α_T$ of the membrane is negative and remains nearly constant down to extremely low temperatures, $T_0\propto \exp (-2/g_0)$. We also find that $α_T$ diverges in the classical limit: $α_T \propto - \ln(1/g_0)$ for $g_0 \to 0$. For graphene parameters, we estimate the value of the thermal expansion coefficient as $α_T \simeq - 0.23\:{\rm eV}^{-1}$, which applies below the temperature $T_{\rm uv} \sim g_0 \varkappa_0 \sim 500$\:K (where $\varkappa_0 \sim 1$\:eV is the bending rigidity) down to $T_0 \sim 10^{-14}$\:K. For $T<T_0$, the thermal expansion coefficient slowly (logarithmically) approaches zero with decreasing temperature. This behavior is surprising since typically the thermal expansion coefficient goes to zero as a power-law function. We discuss possible experimental consequences of this anomaly. We also evaluate classical and quantum contributions to the specific heat of the membrane and investigate the behavior of the Grüneisen parameter.

Mesoscopic fluctuations of the single-particle Green's function at Anderson transitions with Coulomb interaction

Using the two-loop analysis and the background field method we demonstrate that the local pure scaling operators without derivatives in the Finkel'stein nonlinear sigma model can be constructed by straightforward generalization of the corresponding operators for the noninteracting case. These pure scaling operators demonstrate multifractal behavior and describe mesoscopic fluctuations of the single-particle Green's function. We determine anomalous dimensions of all such pure scaling operators in the interacting theory within the two-loop approximation.

Indirect exchange interaction between magnetic impurities in the two-dimensional topological insulator based on CdTe/HgTe/CdTe quantum wells

We study indirect exchange interaction between magnetic impurities in the (001) CdTe/HgTe/CdTe symmetric quantum well. We consider low temperatures and the case of the chemical potential placed in the energy gap of the 2D quasiparticle spectrum. We find that the indirect exchange interaction is suppressed exponentially with the distance between magnetic impurities. The presence of inversion asymmetry results in oscillations of the indirect exchange interaction with the distance and generates additional terms which are non-invariant under rotations in the (001) plane. The indirect exchange interaction matrix has complicated structure with some terms proportional to the sign of the energy gap.

Two-instanton approximation to the Coulomb blockade problem

We develop the two-instanton approximation to the current-voltage characteristic of a single electron transistor within the Ambegaokar-Eckern-Schön model. We determine the temperature and gate voltage dependence of the Coulomb blockade oscillations of the conductance and the effective charge. We find that a small (in comparison with the charging energy) bias voltage leads to significant suppression of the Coulomb blockade oscillations and to appearance of the bias-dependent phase shift.

Local density of states and its mesoscopic fluctuations near the transition to a superconducting state in disordered systems

We develop a theory of the local density of states (LDOS) of disordered superconductors, employing the non-linear sigma-model formalism and the renormalization-group framework. The theory takes into account the interplay of disorder and interaction couplings in all channels, treating the systems with short-range and Coulomb interactions on equal footing. We explore 2D systems that would be Anderson insulators in the absence of interaction and 2D or 3D systems that undergo Anderson transition in the absence of interaction. We evaluate both the average tunneling density of states and its mesoscopic fluctuations which are related to the LDOS multifractality in normal disordered systems. The obtained average LDOS shows a pronounced depletion around the Fermi energy, both in the metallic phase (i.e., above the superconducting critical temperature $T_c$) and in the insulating phase near the superconductor-insulator transition (SIT). The fluctuations of the LDOS are found to be particularly strong for the case of short-range interactions -- especially, in the regime when $T_c$ is enhanced by Anderson localization. On the other hand, the long-range Coulomb repulsion reduces the mesoscopic LDOS fluctuations. However, also in a model with Coulomb interaction, the fluctuations become strong when the systems approaches the SIT.

Inelastic electron scattering off a quantum dot in the cotunneling regime: the signature of mesoscopic Stoner instability

We explore the inelastic electron scattering cross section off a quantum dot close to the Stoner instability. We focus on the regime of strong Coulomb blockade in which the scattering cross section is dominated by the cotunneling processes. For large enough exchange interaction the quantum dot acquires a finite total spin in the ground state. In this, so-called mesoscopic Stoner instability, regime we find that at low enough temperatures the inelastic scattering cross section (including the contribution due to an elastic electron spin-flip) for an electron with a low energy with respect to the chemical potential is different from the case of a magnetic impurity with the same spin. This difference stems from (i) presence of a low-lying many-body states of a quantum dot and (ii) the correlations of the tunneling amplitudes. Our results provide a possible explanation for absence of the dephasing rate saturation at low temperatures in recent experiment [N. Teneh, A. Yu. Kuntsevich, V. M. Pudalov, and M. Reznikov, Phys. Rev. Lett. 109, 226403 (2012)] in which existence of local spin droplets in disordered electron liquid has been unraveled.

Strongly correlated two-dimensional plasma explored from entropy measurements

Charged plasma and Fermi liquid are two distinct states of electronic matter intrinsic to dilute two-dimensional electron systems at elevated and low temperatures, respectively. Probing their thermodynamics represents challenge because of lacking an adequate technique. Here we report thermodynamic method to measure the entropy per electron in gated structures. Our technique appears to be three orders of magnitude superior in sensitivity to the ac calorimetry, allowing entropy measurements with only $10^8$ electrons. This enables us to investigate the correlated plasma regime, previously inaccessible experimentally in two-dimensional electron systems in semiconductors. In experiments with clean two-dimensional electron system in Si-based structures we traced entropy evolution from the plasma to Fermi-liquid regime by varying electron density. We reveal that the correlated plasma regime can be mapped onto the ordinary non-degenerate Fermi gas with an interaction-enhanced temperature dependent effective mass. Our method opens up new horizons in studies of low-dimensional electron systems.

Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition in homogeneously disordered superconducting films

We develop a theory for the vortex unbinding transition in homogeneously disordered superconducting films. This theory incorporates the effects of quantum, mesoscopic and thermal fluctuations stemming from length scales ranging from the superconducting coherence length down to the Fermi wavelength. In particular, we extend the renormalization group treatment of the diffusive nonlinear sigma model to the superconducting side of the transition. Furthermore, we explore the mesoscopic fluctuations of parameters in the Ginzburg-Landau functional. Using the developed theory, we determine the dependence of essential observables (including the vortex unbinding temperature, the superconducting density, as well as the temperature-dependent resistivity and thermal conductivity) on microscopic characteristics such as the disorder-induced scattering rate and bare interaction couplings.

Charge relaxation resistance in the cotunneling regime of multi-channel Coulomb blockade: Violation of Korringa-Shiba relation

We study the low frequency admittance of a small metallic island coupled to a gate electrode and to a massive reservoir via a \emph{multi channel} tunnel junction. The ac current is caused by a slowly oscillating gate voltage. We focus on the regime of inelastic cotunneling in which the dissipation of energy (the real part of the admittance) is determined by two-electron tunneling with creation of electron-hole pairs on the island. We demonstrate that at finite temperatures but low frequencies the energy dissipation is ohmic whereas at zero temperature it is super-ohmic. We find that (i) the charge relaxation resistance (extracted from the real part of the admittance) is strongly temperature dependent, (ii) the imaginary and real parts of the admittance do not satisfy the Korringa-Shiba relation. At zero temperature the charge relaxation resistance vanishes in agreement with the recent zero temperature analysis [M. Filippone and C. Mora, Phys. Rev. B {\bf 86}, 125311 (2012) and P. Dutt, T. L. Schmidt, C. Mora, and K. Le Hur, Phys. Rev. B {\bf 87}, 155134 (2013)].

Two-loop renormalization of the Finkel'stein theory: The specific heat

We explore the two-loop renormalization of the specific heat for an interacting disordered electron system in the case of broken time reversal symmetry. Within the nonlinear sigma model approach we derive the two-loop result for the anomalous dimension which controls scaling of the specific heat with temperature. As an example, we elaborate the metal-insulator transition in $d=2+ε$ dimensions for the case of broken time reversal and spin rotational symmetries and in the presence of Coulomb interaction. In this situation scaling of the specific heat is determined by the anomalous dimension of the Finkel'stein operator which is the eigen operator of the renormalization group complementary to the eigen operator corresponding to the second moment of the local density of states. We find that the absolute values of the anomalous dimensions of these operators differ beyond one-loop approximation contrary to the noninteracting case.

Temperature derivative of the chemical potential and its magnetooscillations in two-dimensional system

We report first thermodynamic measurements of the temperature derivative of chemical potential (dμ/dT) in two-dimensional (2D) electron systems. In order to test the technique we have chosen Schottky gated GaAs/AlGaAs heterojunctions and detected experimentally in this 2D system quantum magnetooscillations of dμ/dT. We also present a Lifshits-Kosevitch type theory for the dμ/dT magnetooscillations in 2D systems and compare the theory with experimental data. The magnetic field dependence of the dμ/dT value appears to be sensitive to the density of states shape of Landau levels. The data in low magnetic field domain demonstrate brilliant agreement with theory for non-interacting Fermi gas with Lorentzian Landau level shape.

Tunneling density of states in quantum dots with anisotropic exchange

We reexamine the tunneling density of states in quantum dots and nanoparticles within the model which is extension of the universal Hamiltonian to the case of uniaxial anisotropic exchange. We derive the exact analytical result for the tunneling density of states in the case of arbitrary single-particle energy spectrum. We find that, similar to the case of the isotropic exchange, the tunneling density of states as a function of energy has the maximum due to a finite value of the total spin of the ground state near the Stoner instability. We demonstrate that there are no additional extrema which have been predicted on the basis of perturbative analysis [M.N. Kiselev and Y. Gefen, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 96}, 066805 (2006)].

Superconductor-insulator transitions: Phase diagram and magnetoresistance

Influence of disorder-induced Anderson localization and of electron-electron interaction on superconductivity in two-dimensional systems is explored. We determine the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$, the temperature dependence of the resistivity, the phase diagram, as well as the magnetoresistance. The analysis is based on the renormalization group (RG) for a nonlinear sigma model. Derived RG equations are valid to the lowest order in disorder but for arbitrary electron-electron interaction strength in particle-hole and Cooper channels. Systems with preserved and broken spin-rotational symmetry are considered, both with short-range and with long-range (Coulomb) interaction. In the cases of short-range interaction, we identify parameter regions where the superconductivity is enhanced by localization effects. Our RG analysis indicates that the superconductor-insulator transition is controlled by a fixed point with a resistivity $R_c$ of the order of the quantum resistance $R_q = h/ 4e^2$. When a transverse magnetic field is applied, we find a strong nonmonotonous magnetoresistance for temperatures below $T_c$.

Multifractality and electron-electron interaction at Anderson transitions

Mesoscopic fluctuations and correlations of the local density of states are studied near metal-insulator transitions in disordered interacting electronic systems. We show that the multifractal behavior of the local density of states survives in the presence of Coulomb interaction. We calculate the spectrum of multifractal exponents in $2+ε$ spatial dimensions for symmetry classes characterized by broken (partially or fully) spin-rotation invariance and show that it differs from that in the absence of interaction. We also estimate the multifractal exponents at the Anderson metal-insulator transition in 2D systems with preserved spin-rotation invariance. Our results for multifractal correlations of the local density of states are in qualitative agreement with recent experimental findings.

Surface states in a 3D topological insulator: The role of hexagonal warping and curvature

We explore a combined effect of hexagonal warping and of finite effective mass on both the tunneling density of electronic states (TDOS) and structure of Landau levels (LLs) of 3D topological insulators. We find the increasing warping to transform the square-root van Hove singularity into a logarithmic one. For moderate warping an additional logarithmic singularity and a jump in the TDOS appear. This phenomenon is experimentally verified by direct measurements of the local TDOS in Bi$_2$Te$_3$. By combining the perturbation theory and the WKB approximation we calculate the LLs in the presence of hexagonal warping. We predict that due to the degeneracy removal the evolution of LLs in the magnetic field is drastically modified.

Spin fluctuations in quantum dots

We explore the static longitudinal and dynamic transverse spin susceptibilities in quantum dots and nanoparticles within the framework of the Hamiltonian that extends the universal Hamiltonian to the case of uniaxial anisotropic exchange. For the limiting cases of Ising and Heisenberg exchange interactions we ascertain how fluctuations of single-particle levels affect the Stoner instability in quantum dots. We reduce the problem to the statistics of extrema of a certain Gaussian process. We prove that, in spite possible strong randomness of the single-particle levels, the spin susceptibility and all its moments diverge simultaneously at the point which is determined by the standard criterion of the Stoner instability involving the mean level spacing only.
