Point-contact Andreev-reflection spectroscopy in Fe(Te,Se) films: multiband superconductivity and electron-boson coupling

We report on a study of the superconducting order parameter in Fe(Te$_{1-x}$Se$_{x}$) thin films (with different Se contents: x=0.3, 0.4, 0.5) by means of point-contact Andreev-reflection spectroscopy (PCARS). The PCARS spectra show reproducible evidence of multiple structures, namely two clear conductance maxima associated to a superconducting gap of amplitude $Δ_E \simeq 2.75 k_B T_c$ and additional shoulders at higher energy that, as we show, are the signature of the strong interaction of charge carriers with a bosonic mode whose characteristic energy coincides with the spin-resonance energy. The details of some PCARS spectra at low energy suggest the presence of a smaller and not easily discernible gap of amplitude $Δ_H \simeq 1.75 k_B T_c$. The existence of this gap and its amplitude are confirmed by PCARS measurements in Fe(Te$_{1-x}$Se$_{x}$) single crystals. The values of the two gaps $Δ_E$ and $Δ_H$, once plotted as a function of the local critical temperature $T_c^A$, turn out to be in perfect agreement with the results obtained by various experimental techniques reported in literature.

Microscopic analysis of the chemical reaction between Fe(Te,Se) thin films and underlying CaF$_2$

To understand the chemical reaction at the interface of materials, we performed a transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observation in four types of Fe(Te,Se) superconducting thin films prepared on different types of substrates: CaF2 substrate, CaF2 substrate with a CaF2 buffer layer, CaF2 substrate with a FeSe buffer layer, and a LaAlO3 substrate with a CaF2 buffer layer. Based on the energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDX) analysis, we found possible interdiffusion between fluorine and selenium that has a strong influence on the superconductivity in Fe(Te,Se) films. The chemical interdiffusion also plays a significant role in the variation of the lattice parameters. The lattice parameters of the Fe(Te,Se) thin films are primarily determined by the chemical substitution of anions, and the lattice mismatch only plays a secondary role.

Epitaxial growth of FeSe$_{0.5}$Te$_{0.5}$ thin films on CaF$_2$ substrates with high critical current density

In-situ epitaxial growth of FeSe$_{0.5}$Te$_{0.5}$ thin films is demonstrated on a non-oxide substrate CaF$_2$. Structural analysis reveals that compressive stress is moderately added to 36-nm thick FeSe$_{0.5}$Te$_{0.5}$, which pushes up the critical temperature above 15 K, showing higher values than that of bulk crystals. Critical current density at $T$ = 4.5 K reaches 5.9 x 10$^4$ Acm$^{-2}$ at $μ_0H$ = 10 T, and 4.2 x 10$^4$ Acm$^{-2}$ at $μ_0H$ = 14 T. These results indicate that fluoride substrates have high potential for the growth of iron-based superconductors in comparison with popular oxide substrates.

Mobility analysis of FeTe thin films

The Hall effect is investigated in detail for nonsuperconducting and superconducting FeTe thin films. The Hall coefficient commonly exhibits a sign reversal from positive in a high-temperature paramagnetic state to negative in a low-temperature antiferromagnetic state. Phenomenological analysis by a simple two-band Drude model indicates that hole mobility is significantly suppressed in the antiferromagnetic state. When suppression of the hole mobility is insufficient, superconductivity shows up in FeTe. This result strongly suggests that the itinerancy in both hole and electron channels is the essential factor for the occurrence of superconductivity in iron chalcogenide superconductors.

Hall effect in superconducting Fe(Se0.5Te0.5) thin films

The Hall effect is investigated for eight superconducting Fe(Se_0.5_Te_0.5_) thin films grown on MgO and LaSrAlO_4_ substrates with different transition temperatures (T_c_). The normal Hall coefficients (R_H_) have positive values with magnitude of 1 - 1.5 x 10^-3^ cm^3^/C at room temperature for the all samples. With decreasing temperature, we find two characteristic types of behavior in R_H_(T) depending on T_c_. For thin films with lower T_c_ (typically T_c_ < 5 K), R_H_ start decreasing approximately below T = 250 K toward a negative side, some of which shows sign reversal at T = 50 - 60 K, but turns positive toward T = 0 K. On the other hand for the films with higher T_c_ (typically T_c_ > 9 K), R_ H_ leaves almost unchanged down to T = 100 K, and then starts decreasing toward a negative side. Around the temperatures when R_H_ changes its sign from positive to negative, obvious nonlinearity is observed in the field-dependence of Hall resistance as to keep the low-field R_H_ positive while the high-field R_H_ negative. Thus the electronic state just above T_c_ is characterized by n_e_ (electron density) > n_h_ (hole density) with keeping μ_e_ < μ_h_. These results suggest the dominance of electron density to the hole density is an essential factor for the occurence of superconductivity in Fe-chalcogenide superconductors.

Deviation from the Wiedemann-Franz law induced by nonmagnetic impurities in overdoped La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4}

To investigate the validity of the Wiedemann-Franz (WF) law in disordered but metallic cuprates, the low-temperature charge and heat transport properties are carefully studied for a series of impurity-substituted and carrier-overdoped La_{1.8}Sr_{0.2}Cu_{1-z}M_zO_4 (M = Zn or Mg) single crystals. With moderate impurity substitution concentrations of z = 0.049 and 0.082 (M = Zn), the resistivity shows a clear metallic behavior at low temperature and the WF law is confirmed to be valid. With increasing impurity concentration to z = 0.13 (M = Zn) or 0.15 (M = Mg), the resistivity shows a low-T upturn but its temperature dependence indicates a finite conductivity in the T \to 0 limit. In this weakly-localized metallic state that is intentionally achieved in the overdoped regime, a {\it negative} departure from the WF law is found, which is opposite to the theoretical expectation.

Doping evolution of the electronic specific heat coefficient in slightly-doped La2-xSrxCuO4 single crystals

Detailed doping dependence of the electronic specific heat coefficient gamma is studied for La2-xSrxCuO4 (LSCO) single crystals in the slightly-doped regime. We find that gamma systematically increases with doping, and furthermore, even for the samples in the antiferromagnetic (AF) regime, gamma already acquires finite value and grows with x. This suggests that finite electronic density of states (DOS) is created in the AF regime where the transport shows strong localization at low temperatures, and this means the system is not a real insulator with a clear gap even though it still keeps long range AF order.

Quantum Phase Transition in the Normal State of High-Tc Cuprates at Optimum Doping

By using a 60 T magnetic field to suppress superconductivity in La2-pSrpCuO4, (LSCO) we reveal an anomalous peak in the Hall number, located at optimum doping and developing at temperatures below the zero-field superconducting transition temperature, Tc. The anomaly bears a striking resemblance to observations in Bi2Sr2-xLaxCuO6+delta (BSLCO) [F. F. Balakirev et al., Nature (London) 424, 912 (2003)], suggesting a normal state phenomenology common to the cuprates that underlies the high-temperature superconducting phase. The peak is ascribed to the transformation of the "Fermi arcs" into a conventional FS, the signature of a Fermi surface reconstruction associated with a quantum phase transition (QPT) near optimum doping and co-incident with the collapse of the pseudogap state.

Critical charge dynamics of superconducting LSCO thin films probed by complex microwave spectroscopy: Anomalous changes of the universality class by hole doping

We study the critical charge dynamics of the superconducting to the normal-state transition for LSCO thin films with a wide range of the Sr concentration, by measuring the frequency-dependent excess parts of the complex microwave conductivity, which is induced by the superconducting fluctuations. We present a dynamic scaling analysis of the complex fluctuation conductivity, which includes the information on the universality class and the dimensionality of the critical charge dynamics as a function of the Sr concentration, the film thickness and the magnetic field. In our previous study (H. Kitano et al., Phys. Rev. B 73, 092504 (2006).), the 2D-XY critical dynamics for underdoped LSCO and the 3D-XY critical dynamics for optimally doped LSCO were reported. In this study, we observed a novel two-dimensional unknown critical charge dynamics for overdoped thin films from x=0.17 to 0.20, which is clearly distinguished from the 2D-XY critical dynamics. Through the systematic measurements by changing the film thickness or by applying small magnetic field, it was confirmed that this unusual behavior, which is referred as 2D-"U" below, was not induced by the finite size effect but was intrinsic to the overdoped LSCO. Thus, it was found that the critical behavior in the phase diagram of LSCO is classified into the following three types; (i) 2D-XY for underdoped region, (ii) 3D-XY for optimally doped region, and (iii) 2D-"U" for overdoped region. In other words, the dimensionality in the critical charge dynamics is changed twice with hole doping. We discuss possible origins of such anomalous dimensional crossovers with hole doping, including an interpretation based on the possible existence of a hidden quantum critical point near the optimally doped region.

Negative Hall coefficients of heavily overdoped La2-xSrxCuO4

The Hall coefficient (R_H) is investigated along the in-plane direction for carefully prepared La_2-x_Sr_x_CuO_4_ thin films from x=0.08 to x=0.40. It is found that R_H becomes almost temperature independent around room temperature for x >= 0.24, and its sign smoothly changes from positive to negative between x = 0.28 and 0.32, showing contrasting behavior to previously reported results. This result indicates that the carrier can be doped smoothly across the hole- to electron-dominant regions. According to the sign change of R_H, superconductivity disappears for x >= 0.32 films, which suggests that a positive R_H is one of the necessary conditions for superconductivity in p-type cuprates.

Infrared Hall effect in underdoped and optimally doped LSCO

We report a study of magneto-optical properties in the mid-infrared region of a series of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ samples with hole doping level ranging from severely underdoped ($x=0.03$)to optimally doped ($x=0.15$). The Faraday rotation and circular dichroism are measured in a magnetic field of 8 Tesla and in a temperature range between 30K and 300K. The doping and temperature dependence of infrared Hall angle is found to be understood within a simple Drude model. A significant increase of Hall frequency is observed when the hole doping level is reduced from optimal doping, which is compared with models of the pseudogap.

Large magneto-thermal effect and the spin-phonon coupling in a parent insulating cuprate Pr_{1.3}La_{0.7}CuO_4

The magnetic-field (H) dependence of the thermal conductivity κof Pr_{1.3}La_{0.7}CuO_4 is found to show a pronounced minimum for in-plane fields at low temperature, which is best attributed to the scattering of phonons by free spins that are seen by a Schottky-type specific heat and a Curie-Weiss susceptibility. Besides pointing to a strong spin-phonon coupling in cuprates, the present result demonstrates that the H-dependence of the phonon heat transport should not be naively neglected when discussing the κ(H) behavior of cuprates, since the Schottky anomaly is ubiquitously found in cuprates at any doping.

Weak ferromagnetism of La_{1.99}Sr_{0.01}CuO_4 thin films: evidence for removal of corrugation in CuO_2 plane by epitaxial strain

The weak ferromagnetism of La_{1.99}Sr_{0.01}CuO_4 epitaxial thin films is investigated using magnetoresistance measurement. While a steplike negative magnetoresistance associated with the weak ferromagnetic transition is clearly observed in the films grown on YAlO_3(001), it is notably suppressed in the films grown on SrTiO_3(100) and (LaAlO_3)_{0.3}(SrAl_{0.5}Ta_{0.5}O_3)_{0.7}(100), and almost disappears in films grown on LaSrAlO_4(001). The strong suppression of the steplike magnetoresistance provides evidence that the CuO_2 planes are much less corrugated in thin films grown on tetragonal substrates, particularly on LaSrAlO_4(001), than in bulk crystals.

A novel heavy-fermion state in CaCu_3Ru_4O12

We have measured susceptibility, specific heat, resistivity, and thermopower of CaCu$_3$Ti$_{4-x}$Ru$_x$O$_{12}$ and CaCu$_{3-y}$Mn$_y$Ru$_4$O$_{12}$, and have found that CaCu$_3$Ru$_4$O$_{12}$ can be regarded as a heavy-fermion oxide in d-electron systems. The Kondo temperature is near 200 K, and the susceptibility (1.4$\times10^{-3}$ emu/Cu mol) and the electron specific heat coefficient (28 mJ/Cu molK$^2$) are moderately enhanced. The resistivity is proportional to $T^2$ at low temperatures, and satisfies the Kadowaki-Woods relation. The heavy-fermion state comes from the interaction between the localized moment of Cu 3d and the conduction electron of Ru 4d. An insulator-metal transition occurs between $x=1.5$ and 4 in CaCu$_3$Ti$_{4-x}$Ru$_x$O$_{12}$, which can be regarded as a transition from magnetic insulator to heavy-fermion metal.

In-situ epitaxial growth of superconducting La-based bilayer cuprate thin films

We investigate the epitaxial growth of bilayer cuprate La2CaCu2O6+δusing pure ozone as an oxidant, and find that even the crystal with parent composition without cation substitution can show metallic behavior with the aid of epitaxial strain effect. The hole concentration is controlled simply by excess-oxygen doping, and the films grown under the optimum conditions exhibit superconductivity below 30 K. This is the first result on the superconductivity of bilayer La2CaCu2O6+δinduced purely by the excess oxygen.

Normal-state conductivity in underdoped La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4 thin films: Search for nonlinear effects related to collective stripe motion

We report a detailed study of the electric-field dependence of the normal-state conductivity in La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4 thin films for two concentrations of doped holes, x=0.01 and 0.06, where formation of diagonal and vertical charged stripes was recently suggested. In order to elucidate whether high electric fields are capable of depinning the charged stripes and inducing their collective motion, we have measured current-voltage characteristics for various orientations of the electric field with respect to the crystallographic axes. However, even for the highest possible fields (~1000 V/cm for x=0.01 and \~300 V/cm for x=0.06) we observed no non-linear-conductivity features except for those related to the conventional Joule heating of the films. Our analysis indicates that Joule heating, rather than collective electron motion, may also be responsible for the non-linear conductivity observed in some other 2D transition-metal oxides as well. We discuss that a possible reason why moderate electric fields fail to induce a collective stripe motion in layered oxides is that fairly flexible and compressible charged stripes can adjust themselves to the crystal lattice and individual impurities, which makes their pinning much stronger than in the case of conventional rigid charge-density waves.

Significant suppression of weak ferromagnetism in (La${}_{1.8}$Eu${}_{0.2}$)CuO${}_4$

The magnetic structure of (La${}_{1.8}$Eu${}_{0.2}$)CuO${}_4$ has been studied by magnetization measurements of single crystals, which show antiferromagnetic long-range order below $T_N$ = 265 K and a structural phase transition at $T_s$ = 130 K. At $T_s < T < T_N$, the Cu spin susceptibility exhibits almost the same behavior as that of La${}_2$CuO${}_4$ in the low-temperature orthorhombic phase, which indicates the existence of finite spin canting out of the CuO${}_2$ plane. At $T < T_s$, the magnitude of the weak-ferromagnetic moment induced by the spin canting is suppressed approximately by 70{%}. This significant suppression of the weak-ferromagnetic moment is carefully compared with the theoretical analysis of weak ferromagnetism by Stein {\it et al.} (Phys. Rev. B {\bf 53}, 775 (1996)), in which the magnitude of weak-ferromagnetic moments strongly depend on the crystallographic symmetry. Based on such comparison, below $T_s$ (La${}_{1.8}$Eu${}_{0.2}$)CuO${}_4$ is in the low-temperature less-orthorhombic phase with a space group of $Pccn$. We also discuss the possible magnetic structure of the pure low-temperature tetragonal phase with space group $P4_2/{ncm}$, which is relevant for rare-earth and alkaline-earth ions co-doped La${}_2$CuO${}_4$.

X-ray Scattering and Magnetic Susceptibility Study of doped CuGeO_3

We report comprehensive synchrotron x-ray scattering and magnetic susceptibility studies of the doped spin-Peierls materials Cu_{1-x}Zn_xGeO_3 and CuGe_{1-y}Si_yO_3. Temperature versus dopant concentration phase diagrams are mapped out for both Zn and Si dopants. The phase diagrams of both Cu_{1-x}Zn_xGeO_3 and CuGe_{1-y}Si_yO_3 closely resemble that of Cu_{1-x}Mg_xGeO_3, including the observation that the spin gap is established at a much higher temperature than the temperature at which the spin-Peierls dimerization attains long-range order. The spin-Peierls transitions in doped samples exhibit unusual phase transition behavior, characterized by highly rounded phase transitions, Lorentzian squared lineshapes, and very long relaxation times. Phenomenological explanations for these observations are given by considering the effects of competing random bond interactions as well as random fields generated by the dopants. We have also confirmed the reentrance of the spin-Peierls phase when the temperature is lowered through the antiferromagnetic ordering transition. The low temperature re-entrance of the spin-Peierls phase has been explained speculatively using a local phase separation scheme between the spin-Peierls phase and the Neel phase.
