Impurity-induced transition and impurity-enhanced thermopower in the thermoelectric oxide NaCo_{2-x}Cu_x$O_4

Various physical quantities are measured and analysed for the Cu-substituted thermoelectric oxide NaCo_{2-x}Cu_xO_4. As was previously known, the substituted Cu enhances the thermoelectric power, while it does not increase the resistivity significantly. The susceptibility and the electron specific-heat are substantially decreased with increasing x, which implies that the substituted Cu decreases the effective-mass enhancement. Through a quantitative comparison with the heavy fermion compounds and the valence fluctuation systems, we have found that the Cu substitution effectively increases the coupling between the conduction electron and the magnetic fluctuation. The Cu substitution induces a phase transition at 22 K that is very similar to a spin-density-wave transition.

Physical properties of misfit-layered (Bi,Pb)-Sr-Co-O system: Effect of hole doping into triangular lattice formed by low-spin Co ions

Pb-doping effect on physical properties of misfit-layered (Bi,Pb)-Sr-Co-O system, in which Co ions form a two-dimensional triangular lattice, was investigated in detail by electronic transport, magnetization and specific-heat measurements. Pb doping enhances the metallic behavior, suggesting that carriers are doped. Pb doping also enhances the magnetic correlation in this system and increases the magnetic transition temperature. We found the existence of the short-range magnetic correlation far above the transition temperature, which seems to induce the spin-glass state coexisting with the ferromagnetic long-range order at low temperatures. Specific-heat measurement suggests that the effective mass of the carrier in (Bi,Pb)-Sr-Co-O is not enhanced so much as reported in NaCo${}_2$O${}_4$. Based on these experimental results, we propose a two-bands model which consists of narrow $a_{1g}$ and rather broad $e'{}_g$ bands. The observed magnetic property and magnetotransport phenomena are explained well by this model.

Structure of the exotic spin-flop states in BaCu2Si2O7

The unusual 2-stage spin flop transition in BaCu2Si2O7 is studied by single-crystal neutron diffraction. The magnetic structures of the various spin-flop phases are determined. The results appear to be inconsistent with the previously proposed theoretical explanation of the 2-stage transition.

Structural phase control of (La$_{1.48}$Nd$_{0.40}$Sr$_{0.12}$)CuO$_4$ thin films by epitaxial growth technique

Epitaxial growth of (La$_{1.48}$Nd$_{0.40}$Sr$_{0.12}$)CuO$_4$ thin films was studied by pulsed-laser deposition technique on three different substrates, SrTiO$_3$ (100), LaSrAlO$_4$ (001), and YAlO$_3$ (001). The (Nd,Sr,Ce)$_2$CuO$_4$-type structure appears at the initial growth stage on SrTiO$_3$ (100) when the film is deposited under the growth conditions optimized for (La,Sr)$_2$CuO$_4$. This (Nd,Sr,Ce)$_2$CuO$_4$-type structure can be eliminated by increasing the substrate temperature and the laser repetition frequency. Films on LaSrAlO$_4$ (001) maintain a La$_2$CuO$_4$-type structure as bulk samples, but those on YAlO$_3$ (001) show phase separation into La$_2$CuO$_4$- and Nd$_2$CuO$_4$-type structures. Such complicated results are explained in terms of the competition between lattice misfit and thermodynamic conditions. Interestingly the films with La$_2$CuO$_4$-type structure prepared on SrTiO$_3$ and LaSrAlO$_4$ show different surface structures and transport properties. The results indicate the possibility of controlling charge stripes of (La$_{1.48}$Nd$_{0.40}$Sr$_{0.12}$)CuO$_4$ as was demonstrated in (La,Ba)$_2$CuO$_4$ thin films by Sato et al. (Phys. Rev. B {\bf 62}, R799 (2000)).

Two-stage spin-flop transitions in S = 1/2 antiferromagnetic spin chain BaCu_2Si_2O_7

Two-stage spin-flop transitions are observed the in quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnet, BaCu${}_2$Si${}_2$O${}_7$. A magnetic field applied along the easy axis induces a spin-flop transition at 2.0 T followed by a second transition at 4.9 T. The magnetic susceptibility indicates the presence of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) antisymmetric interactions between the intrachain neighboring spins. We discuss a possible mechanism whereby the geometrical competition between DM and interchain interactions, as discussed for the two-dimensional antiferromagnet La${}_2$CuO${}_4$, causes the two-stage spin-flop transitions.

Unusual magnetic susceptibility anisotropy in untwinned La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4 single crystals in the lightly-doped region

We present a study of the magnetic susceptibility in carefully detwinned La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_4 single crystals in the lightly-doped region (x=0-0.03), which demonstrates a remarkable in-plane anisotropy of the spin system. This anisotropy is found to persist after the long-range antiferromagnetic (AF) order is destroyed by hole doping, suggesting that doped holes break the AF order into domains in which the spin alignment is kept essentially intact. It turns out that the freezing of the spins taking place at low temperatures is also notably anisotropic, implying that the "spin-glass" feature is governed by the domain structure as well.

Magnetic order and spin-waves in the quasi-1D S=1/2 antiferromagnet ${\bf BaCu_{2}Si_{2}O_{7}}$

Elastic and inelastic neutron scattering were used to study the ordered phase of the quasi-one-dimensional spin-1/2 antiferromagnet ${\rm BaCu_{2}Si_{2}O_{7}}$. The previously proposed model for the low-temperature magnetic structure was confirmed. Spin wave dispersion along several reciprocal-space directions was measured and inter-chain, as well as in-chain exchange constants were determined. A small gap in the spin wave spectrum was observed and attributed to magnetic anisotropy effects. The results are discussed in comparison with existing theories for weakly-coupled quantum spin chain antiferromagnets.

Ferromagnetism and large negative magnetoresistance in Pb doped Bi-Sr-Co-O misfit-layer compound

Ferromagnetism and accompanying large negative magnetoresistance in Pb-substituted Bi-Sr-Co-O misfit-layer compound are investigated in detail. Recent structural analysis of (Bi,Pb)${}_2$Sr${}_{3}$Co${}_2$O${}_9$, which has been believed to be a Co analogue of Bi${}_2$Sr${}_2$CaCu${}_2$O${}_{8+δ}$, revealed that it has a more complex structure including a CoO${}_2$ hexagonal layer [T. Yamamoto {\it et al.}, Jpn. J. Appl. Phys. {\bf 39} (2000) L747]. Pb substitution for Bi not only introduces holes into the conducting CoO${}_2$ layers but also creates a certain amount of localized spins. Ferromagnetic transition appears at $T$ = 3.2 K with small spontaneous magnetization along the $c$ axis, and around the transition temperature large and anisotropic negative magnetoresistance was observed. This compound is the first example which shows ferromagnetic long-range order in a two-dimensional metallic hexagnonal CoO${}_2$ layer.

Weak ferromagnetism of quasi-one-dimensional S=1/2 antiferromagnet BaCu$_2$Ge$_2$O$_7$

Weak ferromagnetism of quasi-one-dimensional S = 1/2 antiferromagnet BaCu$_2$Ge$_2$O$_7$ is studied by the magnetization measurement. The spontaneous magnetization appears along the b axis. The local symmetry between the in-chain nearest neighbor spins allows the presence of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, and the only possible spatial configuration of the weak ferromagnetic moment per spin determines the sign of the inter-chain interaction. A weak $a$-axis magnetic field can change the direction of the magnetization to the $a$-axis direction, which shows that the spin chain forms a weakly coupled weak-ferromagnetic chain system.

Energy separation of single-particle and continuum states in a S=1/2 weakly-coupled chains antiferromagnet

Inelastic neutron scattering is used to study transverse-polarized magnetic excitations in the quasi-one-dimensional S=1/2 antiferromagnet BaCu_2Si_2O_7, where the saturation value for the Néel order parameter is $m_0=0.12 μ_{\rm B}$ per spin. At low energies the spectrum is totally dominated by resolution-limited spin wave-like excitations. An excitation continuum sets in above a well-defined threshold frequency. Experimental results are discussed in the context of current theories for weakly-interacting quantum half-integer spin chains.

Thermal conductivity of pure and Mg-doped CuGeO_3 in the incommensurate phase

The thermal conductivity κof Cu_1-xMg_xGeO_3 is measured in magnetic fields up to 16 T. At the transition field H_c to the high-field incommensurate (I) phase, κabruptly decreases. While κof the pure CuGeO_3 is enhanced with the application of higher magnetic fields, an anomalous plateau feature shows up in the κ(H) profile in the I phase of the Mg-doped samples which includes antiferromagnetic ordering (I-AF phase). With the help of specific heat data, taken supplementally for the identical samples, the above features are well understood that phonons are strongly scattered by spin solitons and that κin the I phase is governed by their spatial distribution. In particular, the plateau feature in the doped samples suggests "freezing" of the solitons, in which antiferromagnetism must be playing an essential role because this feature is absent at temperatures above T_N.

Thermal conductivity of Mg-doped CuGeO_3 at very low temperatures: Heat conduction by antiferromagnetic magnons

Thermal conductivity κis measured at very low temperatures down to 0.28 K for pure and Mg-doped CuGeO_3 single crystals. The doped samples carry larger amount of heat than the pure sample at the lowest temperature. This is because antiferromagnetic magnons appear in the doped samples and are responsible for the additional heat conductivity, while κof the pure sample represents phonon conductivity at such low temperatures. The maximum energy of the magnon is estimated to be much lower than the spin-Peierls-gap energy. The result presents the first example that κat very low temperatures probes the magnon transport in disorder-induced antiferromagnetic phase of spin-gap systems.

Thermal Conductivity of Mg-doped CuGeO_3

The thermal conductivity $κ$ is measured in a series of Cu_1-xMg_xGeO_3 single crystals in magnetic fields up to 16 T. It has turned out that heat transport by spin excitations is coherent for lightly doped samples, in which the spin-Peierls (SP) transition exists, at temperatures well above the SP transition temperature T_SP. Depression of this spin heat transport appears below T^*, at which the spin gap locally opens. T^* is not modified with Mg-doping and that T^* for each Mg-doped sample remains as high as T_SP of pure CuGeO_3, in contrast to T_SP which is strongly suppressed with Mg-doping. The spin-gap opening enhances phonon part of the heat transport because of reduced scattering by the spin excitations, producing an unusual peak. This peak diminishes when the spin gap is suppressed both in magnetic fields and with the Mg-doping.

Magnetic excitations in coupled Haldane spin chains near the quantum critical point

Two quasi-1-dimensional S=1 quantum antiferromagnetic materials, PbNi2V2O8 and SrNi2V2O8, are studied by inelastic neutron scattering on powder samples. While magnetic interactions in the two systems are found to be very similar, subtle differences in inter-chain interaction strengths and magnetic anisotropy are detected. The latter are shown to be responsible for qualitatively different ground state properties: magnetic long-range order in SrNi2V2O8 and disordered ``spin liquid'' Haldane-gap state in PbNi2V2O8.

The first-order phase transition between dimerized-antiferromagnetic and uniform-antiferromagnetic phases in Cu_(1-x)M_xGeO_3

We have performed detailed magnetic susceptibility measurements as well as synchrotron x-ray diffraction studies to determine the temperature vs concentration ($T$ - $x$) phase diagram of Cu${}_{1-x}$Mg${}_x$GeO${}_3$. We observe clear double peaks in the magnetic susceptibility implying two antiferromagnetic (AF) transition temperatures in samples with Mg concentrations in the range 0.0237 $\le x \le$ 0.0271. We also observe a drastic change in the inverse correlation length in this concentration range by x-ray diffraction. The drastic change of the AF transition temperature as well as the disappearance of the spin-Peierls (SP) phase have been clarified; these results are consistent with a first-order phase transition between dimerized AF (D-AF) and uniform AF (U-AF) phases as reported by T. Masuda {\it et al.} \lbrack Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 80}, 4566 (1998)\rbrack. The $T$ - $x$ phase diagram of Cu${}_{1-x}$Zn${}_x$GeO${}_3$ is similar to that of Cu${}_{1-x}$Mg${}_x$GeO${}_3$, which suggests that the present phase transition is universal for Cu${}_{1-x}M_{x}$GeO${}_3$.

Reentrant Spin-Peierls Transition in Mg-Doped CuGeO_3

We report a synchrotron x-ray scattering study of the diluted spin-Peierls (SP) material Cu_{1-x}Mg_xGeO_3. In a recent paper we have shown that the SP dimerization attains long-range order only for x < x_c = 0.022(0.001). Here we report that the SP transition is reentrant in the vicinity of the critical concentration x_c. This is manifested by broadening of the SP dimerization superlattice peaks below the reentrance temperature, T_r, which may mean either the complete loss of the long-range SP order or the development of a short-range ordered component within the long-range ordered SP state. Marked hysteresis and very large relaxation times are found in the samples with Mg concentrations in the vicinity of x_c. The reentrant transition is likely related to the competing Neel transition which occurs at a temperature similar to T_r. We argue that impurity-induced competing interchain interactions play an essential role in these phenomena.

Structural Critical Scattering Study of Mg-Doped CuGeO3

We report a synchrotron x-ray scattering study of the diluted spin-Peierls (SP) material Cu_(1-x)Mg_xGeO_3. We find that for x>0 the temperature T_m at which the spin gap is established is significantly higher than the temperature T_s at which the SP dimerization attains long-range order. The latter is observed only for x x_c the SP correlation length quickly decreases with increasing x. We argue that impurity-induced competing interactions play a central role in these phenomena.

Spin-Vacancy-Induced Long-Range Order in a New Haldane-Gap Antiferromagnet

Magnetic susceptibility, high-field magnetization and inelastic neutron scattering experiments are used to study the magnetic properties of a new S=1 quasi-1-dimensional antiferromagnet PbNi2V2O8. Inter-chain interactions are shown to be almost, but not quite, strong enough to destroy the nonmagnetic singlet ground state and the energy gap in the magnetic excitation spectrum. Substituting nonmagnetic Mg$^{2+}$ (S=0) ions for Ni$^{2+}$ (S=1) induces a magnetically ordered state at low temperatures. To our knowledge this is the first observation of doping-induced long-range order in a Haldane-gap system.
