Feshbach blockade: single-photon nonlinear optics using resonantly enhanced cavity-polariton scattering from biexciton states

We theoretically demonstrate how the resonant coupling between a pair of cavity-polaritons and a biexciton state can lead to a large single-photon Kerr nonlinearity in a semiconductor solid-state system. A fully analytical model of the scattering process between a pair of cavity-polaritons is developed, which explicitly includes the biexcitonic intermediate state. A dramatic enhancement of the polariton-polariton interactions is predicted in the vicinity of the biexciton Feshbach resonance. Application to the generation of non-classical light from polariton dots is discussed.

Photon Wave-packet Manipulation via Dynamic Electromagnetically Induced Transparency in Multilayer Structures

We present a Maxwell-Bloch description of the dynamics of a light pulse propagating through a spatially inhomogeneous system consisting of alternating layers of EIT media and vacuum. We study the effect of a dynamical modulation of the EIT control field on the shape of the wave packet: interesting effects due to the presence of interfaces with group velocity mismatch are found. An effective description based on a continuity equation is developed. Modulation schemes that can be realized in ultracold atomic samples with standard experimental techniques are proposed and discussed.

Near-field intensity correlations in parametric photo-luminescence from a planar microcavity

We study the spatio-temporal pattern of the near-field intensity correlations generated by parametric scattering processes in a planar optical cavity. A generalized Bogolubov-de Gennes model is used to compute the second order field correlation function. Analytic approximations are developed to understand the numerical results in the different regimes. The correlation pattern is found to be robust against a realistic disorder for state-of-the-art semiconductor systems.

Are non-equilibrium Bose-Einstein condensates superfluid?

We theoretically study the superfluidity properties of a non-equilibrium Bose-Einstein condensate of exciton-polaritons in a semiconductor microcavity. The dynamics of the condensate is described at mean-field level in terms of a modified Complex Ginzburg Landau equation. A generalized Landau criterion is formulated which estimates the onset of the drag force on a small moving defect. Metastability of supercurrents in multiply connected geometries persists up to higher flow speeds.

Density correlations and dynamical Casimir emission of Bogoliubov phonons in modulated atomic Bose-Einstein condensates

We present a theory of the density correlations that appear in an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate as a consequence of the dynamical Casimir emission of pairs of Bogoliubov phonons when the atom-atom scattering length is modulated in time. Different regimes as a function of the temporal shape of the modulation are identified and a simple physical picture of the phenomenon is discussed. Analytical expressions for the density correlation function are provided for the most significant limiting cases. This theory is able to explain some unexpected features recently observed in numerical calculations of Hawking radiation from analog black holes.

Extracavity quantum vacuum radiation from a single qubit

We present a theory of the quantum vacuum radiation that is generated by a fast modulation of the vacuum Rabi frequency of a single two-level system strongly coupled to a single cavity mode. The dissipative dynamics of the Jaynes-Cummings model in the presence of anti-rotating wave terms is described by a generalized master equation including non-Markovian terms. Peculiar spectral properties and significant extracavity quantum vacuum radiation output are predicted for state-of-the-art circuit cavity quantum electrodynamics systems with superconducting qubits.

Probing quasi-particle states in strongly interacting atomic gases by momentum-resolved Raman photoemission spectroscopy

We investigate a momentum-resolved Raman spectroscopy technique which is able to probe the one-body spectral function and the quasi-particle states of a gas of strongly interacting ultracold atoms. This technique is inspired by Angle-Resolved Photo-Emission Spectroscopy, a powerful experimental probe of electronic states in solid-state systems. Quantitative examples of experimentally accessible spectra are given for the most significant regimes along the BEC-BCS crossover. When the theory is specialized to RF spectroscopy, agreement is found with recent experimental data. The main advantages of this Raman spectroscopy over existing techniques are pointed out.

Fermionized photons in an array of driven dissipative nonlinear cavities

We theoretically investigate the optical response of a one-dimensional array of strongly nonlinear optical microcavities. When the optical nonlinearity is much larger than both losses and inter-cavity tunnel coupling, the non-equilibrium steady state of the system is reminiscent of a strongly correlated Tonks-Girardeau gas of impenetrable bosons. Signatures of strong correlations are identified in the absorption spectrum of the system, as well as in the intensity correlations of the emitted light. Possible experimental implementations in state-of-the-art solid-state devices are discussed.

Probing the excitation spectrum of nonresonantly pumped polariton condensates

We propose a four wave mixing experiment to probe the elementary excitation spectrum of a non-equilibrium Bose-Einstein condensate of exciton-polaritons under non-resonant pumping. Analytical calculations based on mean-field theory show that this method is able to reveal the characteristic negative energy feature of the Bogoliubov dispersion. Numerical simulations including the finite spatial profile of the excitation laser spot and a weak disorder confirm the practical utility of the method for realistic condensates.

Numerical observation of Hawking radiation from acoustic black holes in atomic Bose-Einstein condensates

We report numerical evidence of Hawking emission of Bogoliubov phonons from a sonic horizon in a flowing one-dimensional atomic Bose-Einstein condensate. The presence of Hawking radiation is revealed from peculiar long-range patterns in the density-density correlation function of the gas. Quantitative agreement between our fully microscopic calculations and the prediction of analog models is obtained in the hydrodynamic limit. New features are predicted and the robustness of the Hawking signal against a finite temperature discussed.

Non-local density correlations as signal of Hawking radiation in BEC acoustic black holes

We have used the analogy between gravitational systems and non-homogeneous fluid flows to calculate the density-density correlation function of an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate in the presence of an acoustic black hole. The emission of correlated pairs of phonons by Hawking-like process results into a peculiar long-range density correlation. Quantitative estimations of the effect are provided for realistic experimental configurations.

Light propagation in atomic Mott Insulators

We study radiation-matter interaction in a system of ultracold atoms trapped in an optical lattice in a Mott insulator phase. We develop a fully general quantum model, and we perform calculations for a one-dimensional geometry at normal incidence. Both two- and three-level $Λ$ atomic configurations are studied. The polariton dispersion and the reflectivity spectra are characterized in the different regimes, for both semi-infinite and finite-size geometries. We apply this model to propose a photon energy lifter experiment: a device which is able to shift the carrier frequency of a slowly travelling wavepacket without affecting the pulse shape nor its coherence.

Optical properties of atomic Mott insulators: from slow light to dynamical Casimir effects

We theoretically study the optical properties of a gas of ultracold, coherently dressed three-level atoms in a Mott insulator phase of an optical lattice. The vacuum state, the band dispersion and the absorption spectrum of the polariton field can be controlled in real time by varying the amplitude and the frequency of the dressing beam. In the weak dressing regime, the system shows unique ultra-slow light propagation properties without absorption. In the presence of a fast time modulation of the dressing amplitude, we predict a significant emission of photon pairs by parametric amplification of the polaritonic zero-point fluctuations. Quantitative considerations on the experimental observability of such a dynamical Casimir effect are presented for the most promising atomic species and level schemes.

Quantum Monte Carlo study of ring-shaped polariton parametric luminescence in a semiconductor microcavity

We present a quantum Monte Carlo study of the quantum correlations in the parametric luminescence from semiconductor microcavities in the strong exciton-photon coupling regime. As already demonstrated in recent experiments, a ring-shaped emission is obtained by applying two identical pump beams with opposite in-plane wavevectors, providing symmetrical signal and idler beams with opposite in-plane wavevectors on the ring. We study the squeezing of the signal-idler difference noise across the parametric instability threshold, accounting for the radiative and non-radiative losses, multiple scattering and static disorder. We compare the results of the complete multimode Monte Carlo simulations with a simplified linearized quantum Langevin analytical model.

Radiation induced force between two planar waveguides

We study the electromagnetic force exerted on a pair of parallel slab waveguides by the light propagating through them. We have calculated the dependence of the force on the slab separation by means of the Maxwell--Stress tensor formalism and we have discussed its main features for the different propagation modes: spatially symmetric (antisymmetric) modes give rise to an attractive (repulsive) interaction. We have derived the asymptotic behaviors of the force at small and large separation and we have quantitatively estimated the mechanical deflection induced on a realistic air-bridge structure.

A semi-classical field method for the equilibrium Bose gas and application to thermal vortices in two dimensions

We develop a semi-classical field method for the study of the weakly interacting Bose gas at finite temperature, which, contrarily to the usual classical field model, does not suffer from an ultraviolet cut-off dependence. We apply the method to the study of thermal vortices in spatially homogeneous, two-dimensional systems. We present numerical results for the vortex density and the vortex pair distribution function. Insight in the physics of the system is obtained by comparing the numerical results with the predictions of simple analytical models. In particular, we calculate the activation energy required to form a vortex pair at low temperature.

Measuring the one-particle excitations of ultracold fermionic atoms by stimulated Raman spectroscopy

We propose a Raman spectroscopy technique which is able to probe the one-particle Green's function, the Fermi surface, and the quasiparticles of a gas of strongly interacting ultracold atoms. We give quantitative examples of experimentally accessible spectra. The efficiency of the method is validated by means of simulated images for the case of a usual Fermi liquid as well as for more exotic states: specific signatures of e.g. a d-wave pseudo-gap are clearly visible.

Quantum vacuum radiation spectra from a semiconductor microcavity with a time-modulated vacuum Rabi frequency

We develop a general theory of the quantum vacuum radiation generated by an arbitrary time-modulation of the vacuum Rabi frequency for an intersubband transition of a doped quantum well system embedded in a semiconductor planar microcavity. Both non-radiative and radiative losses are included within an input-output quantum Langevin framework. The intensity and the main spectral signatures of the extra-cavity emission are characterized as a function of the amplitude and the frequency of the vacuum modulation. A significant amount of photon pairs, which can largely exceed the black-body radiation in the mid and far infrared, is shown to be produced with realistic parameters. For a large amplitude resonant modulation, a parametric oscillation regime can be also achieved.
