Superfluid light in propagating geometries

We review how the paraxial approximation naturally leads to a hydrodynamic description of light propagation in a Kerr nonlinear medium analogous to the Gross-Pitaevskii equation for the temporal evolution of the order parameter of a superfluid. The main features of the many-body collective dynamics of these fluids of light in a propagating geometry are discussed: Generation and observation of Bogoliubov sound waves on top of the fluid is first described. Experimentally accessible manifestations of superfluidity are then highlighted. Perspectives in view of realizing analog models of gravity are finally given.

Entangled phonons in atomic Bose-Einstein condensates

We theoretically study the entanglement between phonons spontaneously generated in atomic Bose-Einstein condensates by analog Hawking and dynamical Casimir processes. The quantum evolution of the system is numerically modeled by a truncated Wigner method based on a full microscopic description of the condensate and state non-separability is assessed by applying a generalized Peres-Horodecki criterion. The peculiar distribution of entanglement is described in both real and momentum spaces and its robustness against increasing initial temperature is investigated. Viable strategies to experimentally detect the predicted phonon entanglement are briefly discussed.

Berry curvature effects in the Bloch oscillations of a quantum particle under a strong (synthetic) magnetic field

We study the magnetic Bloch oscillations performed by a quantum particle moving in a two-dimensional lattice in the presence of a strong (synthetic) magnetic field and a uniform force. An elementary derivation of the Berry curvature effect on the semiclassical trajectory is given as well as an explicit connection to the classical Hall effect in the continuum limit. Perspectives to observe these effects in optical systems using synthetic gauge fields for photons are discussed.

Non-equilibrium quasi-condensates in reduced dimensions

We develop a generic phenomenological model to describe the fluctuations on top of a non-equilibrium Bose-Einstein condensate. Analytic expressions are obtained for the momentum distribution of the non-condensed cloud and for the long-distance behavior of the spatial coherence in the different dimensionalities. Comparison of our predictions with available experimental data on condensates of exciton-polaritons and on surface-emitting planar laser devices is finally made.

Quantum vacuum emission in a nonlinear optical medium illuminated by a strong laser pulse

A strong light pulse propagating in a nonlinear Kerr medium produces a change in the refractive index, which makes light travel at different speeds inside and outside the pulse. By tuning the pulse velocity, an analog black hole horizon can be obtained in a suitable frequency window. In this paper, we develop a quantum theory of light propagation for this system, including the frequency dispersion of the refractive index of the medium by coupling the electromagnetic field to matter polarization fields. In a configuration with a single black hole horizon, the spectrum of spontaneously emitted particles presents some similarities with Hawking radiation. Furthermore, even in horizonless systems spontaneous vacuum emission is still possible due to the dispersive nature of the medium, yet with dramatically different spectral properties.

Quantum fluids of light

This article reviews recent theoretical and experimental advances in the fundamental understanding and active control of quantum fluids of light in nonlinear optical systems. In presence of effective photon-photon interactions induced by the optical nonlinearity of the medium, a many-photon system can behave collectively as a quantum fluid with a number of novel features stemming from its intrinsically non-equilibrium nature. We present a rich variety of photon hydrodynamical effects that have been recently observed, from the superfluid flow around a defect at low speeds, to the appearance of a Mach-Cherenkov cone in a supersonic flow, to the hydrodynamic formation of topological excitations such as quantized vortices and dark solitons at the surface of large impenetrable obstacles. While our review is mostly focused on a class of semiconductor systems that have been extensively studied in recent years (namely planar semiconductor microcavities in the strong light-matter coupling regime having cavity polaritons as elementary excitations), the very concept of quantum fluids of light applies to a broad spectrum of systems, ranging from bulk nonlinear crystals, to atomic clouds embedded in optical fibers and cavities, to photonic crystal cavities, to superconducting quantum circuits based on Josephson junctions. The conclusive part of our article is devoted to a review of the exciting perspectives to achieve strongly correlated photon gases. In particular, we present different mechanisms to obtain efficient photon blockade, we discuss the novel quantum phases that are expected to appear in arrays of strongly nonlinear cavities, and we point out the rich phenomenology offered by the implementation of artificial gauge fields for photons.

Kinematic study of the effect of dispersion in quantum vacuum emission from strong laser pulses

A strong light pulse propagating in a nonlinear medium causes an effective change in the local refractive index. With a suitable tuning of the pulse velocity, the leading and trailing edge of the pulse were predicted to behave as analogue black and white horizons in the limit of a dispersionless medium. In this paper, we study a more realistic situation where the frequency dispersion of the medium is fully taken into account. As soon as positive frequency modes with negative norm are present in the comoving frame, spontaneous emission of quantum vacuum radiation is expected to arise independently of the presence of horizons. We finally investigate the kinematic constraints put on the emission and we show that the optimal directions to observe Hawking-like emission form a narrow angle with the direction of propagation of the pulse.

Analog Hawking radiation from an acoustic black hole in a flowing polariton superfluid

We theoretically study Hawking radiation processes from an analog acoustic black hole in a flowing superfluid of exciton-polaritons in a one-dimensional semiconductor microcavity. Polaritons are coherently injected into the microcavity by a laser pump with a suitably tailored spot profile. An event horizon with a large analog surface gravity is created by inserting a defect in the polariton flow along the cavity plane. Experimentally observable signatures of the analog Hawking radiation are identified in the scattering of phonon wavepackets off the horizon, as well as in the spatial correlation pattern of quantum fluctuations of the polariton density. The potential of these table-top optical systems as analog models of gravitational physics is quantitatively confirmed by numerical calculations using realistic parameters for state-of-the-art devices.

The Cerenkov effect revisited: from swimming ducks to zero modes in gravitational analogs

We present an interdisciplinary review of the generalized Cerenkov emission of radiation from uniformly moving sources in the different contexts of classical electromagnetism, superfluid hydrodynamics, and classical hydrodynamics. The details of each specific physical systems enter our theory via the dispersion law of the excitations. A geometrical recipe to obtain the emission patterns in both real and wavevector space from the geometrical shape of the dispersion law is discussed and applied to a number of cases of current experimental interest. Some consequences of these emission processes onto the stability of condensed-matter analogs of gravitational systems are finally illustrated.

Non-equilibrium and local detection of the normal fraction of a trapped two-dimensional Bose gas

We propose a method to measure the normal fraction of a two-dimensional Bose gas, a quantity that generally differs from the non-condensed fraction. The idea is based on applying a spatially oscillating artificial gauge field to the atoms. The response of the atoms to the gauge field can be read out either mechanically from the deposited energy into the cloud, or optically from the macroscopic optical properties of the atomic gas. The local nature of the proposed scheme allows one to reconstruct the spatial profile of the superfluid component; furthermore, the proposed method does not require having established thermal equilibrium in the gas in the presence of the gauge field. The theoretical description of the system is based on a generalization of the Dum-Olshanii theory of artificial gauge fields to the interacting many-body context. The efficiency of the proposed measurement scheme is assessed by means of classical field numerical simulations. An explicit atomic level scheme minimizing disturbing effects such as spontaneous emission and light-shifts is proposed for Rb 87 atoms.

Scattering-matrix model of light scattering from atoms

We develop a scattering-matrix formalism to numerically study the resonant scattering of light on generic assemblies of atoms. Protocols to eliminate the artifacts of the method and extract physical information from the numerical data are discussed. The efficiency of the approach is validated by comparing its predictions with analytical results in simple geometries.Paper withdrawn.

Algebraic Geometry tools for the study of entanglement: an application to spin squeezed states

A short review of Algebraic Geometry tools for the decomposition of tensors and polynomials is given from the point of view of applications to quantum and atomic physics. Examples of application to assemblies of indistinguishable two-level bosonic atoms are discussed using modern formulations of the classical Sylvester's algorithm for the decomposition of homogeneous polynomials in two variables. In particular, the symmetric rank and symmetric border rank of spin squeezed states is calculated as well as their Schrödinger-cat-like decomposition as the sum of macroscopically different coherent spin states; Fock states provide an example of states for which the symmetric rank and the symmetric border rank are different.

Dynamical Casimir Effect in Optically Modulated Cavities

Cavities with periodically oscillating mirrors have been predicted to excite photon pairs out of the quantum vacuum in a process known as the Dynamical Casimir effect. Here we propose and analyse an experimental layout that can provide an efficient modulation of the effective optical length of a cavity mode in the near-infrared spectral region. An analytical model of the dynamical Casimir emission is developed and compared to the predictions of a direct numerical solution of Maxwell's equations in real time. A sizeable intensity of dynamical Casimir emission is anticipated for realistic operating parameters. In the presence of an external coherent seed beam, we predict amplification of the seed beam and the appearance of an additional phase-conjugate beam as a consequence of stimulated dynamical Casimir processes.

Acoustic white holes in flowing atomic Bose-Einstein condensates

We study acoustic white holes in a steadily flowing atomic Bose-Einstein condensate. A white hole configuration is obtained when the flow velocity goes from a super-sonic value in the upstream region to a sub-sonic one in the downstream region. The scattering of phonon wavepackets on a white hole horizon is numerically studied in terms of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation of mean-field theory: dynamical stability of the acoustic white hole is found, as well as a signature of a nonlinear back-action of the incident phonon wavepacket onto the horizon. The correlation pattern of density fluctuations is numerically studied by means of the truncated-Wigner method which includes quantum fluctuations. Signatures of the white hole radiation of correlated phonon pairs by the horizon are characterized; analogies and differences with Hawking radiation from acoustic black holes are discussed. In particular, a short wavelength feature is identified in the density correlation function, whose amplitude steadily grows in time since the formation of the horizon. The numerical observations are quantitatively interpreted by means of an analytical Bogoliubov theory of quantum fluctuations for a white hole configuration within the step-like horizon approximation.

On the origin of strong photon antibunching in weakly nonlinear photonic molecules

In a recent work [T. C. H. Liew and V. Savona, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf104}, 183601 (2010)] it was numerically shown that in a photonic 'molecule' consisting of two coupled cavities, near-resonant coherent excitation could give rise to strong photon antibunching with a surprisingly weak nonlinearity. Here, we show that a subtle quantum interference effect is responsible for the predicted efficient photon blockade effect. We analytically determine the optimal on-site nonlinearity and frequency detuning between the pump field and the cavity mode. We also highlight the limitations of the proposal and its potential applications in demonstration of strongly correlated photonic systems in arrays of weakly nonlinear cavities.

Hydrodynamic nucleation of vortices and solitons in a resonantly excited polariton superfluid

We present a theoretical study of the hydrodynamic properties of a quantum gas of exciton-polaritons in a semiconductor microcavity under a resonant laser excitation. The effect of a spatially extended defect on the superfluid flow is investigated as a function of the flow speed. The processes that are responsible for the nucleation of vortices and solitons in the wake of the defect are characterized, as well as the regimes where the superfluid flow remains unperturbed. Specific features due to the non-equilibrium nature of the polariton fluid are put in evidence.

All-optical pump-and-probe detection of dynamical correlations in a two-dimensional Fermi gas

We propose an all-optical scheme to probe the dynamical correlations of a strongly-interacting gas of ultracold atoms. The proposed technique is based on a pump-and-probe scheme: a coherent light pulse is initially converted into an atomic coherence and later retrieved after a variable storage time. The efficiency of the proposed method to measure the one-particle Green function of the gas is validated by numerical and analytical calculations of the expected signal for the two cases of a normal Fermi gas and a BCS superfluid state. Protocols to extract the superfluid gap and the full quasi-particle dispersions are discussed.
