Functoriality of Rieffel's Generalised Fixed-Point Algebras for Proper Actions

We consider two categories of C*-algebras; in the first, the isomorphisms are ordinary isomorphisms, and in the second, the isomorphisms are Morita equivalences. We show how these two categories, and categories of dynamical systems based on them, crop up in a variety of C*-algebraic contexts. We show that Rieffel's construction of a fixed-point algebra for a proper action can be made into functors defined on these categories, and that his Morita equivalence then gives a natural isomorphism between these functors and crossed-product functors. These results have interesting applications to non-abelian duality for crossed products.

Exel's crossed product for non-unital C*-algebras

We consider a family of dynamical systems (A,alpha,L) in which alpha is an endomorphism of a C*-algebra A and L is a transfer operator for α. We extend Exel's construction of a crossed product to cover non-unital algebras A, and show that the C*-algebra of a locally finite graph can be realised as one of these crossed products. When A is commutative, we find criteria for the simplicity of the crossed product, and analyse the ideal structure of the crossed product.

Fixed-point algebras for proper actions and crossed products by homogeneous spaces

We consider a fixed free and proper action of a locally compact group $G$ on a space $T$, and actions $α:G\to \Aut A$ on $C^*$-algebras for which there is an equivariant embedding of $(C_0(T),\rt)$ in $(M(A),α)$. A recent theorem of Rieffel implies that $α$ is proper and saturated with respect to the subalgebra $C_0(T)AC_0(T)$ of $A$, so that his general theory of proper actions gives a Morita equivalence between $A\rtimes_{α,r}G$ and a generalised fixed-point algebra $A^α$. Here we investigate the functor $(A,α)\mapsto A^α$ and the naturality of Rieffel's Morita equivalence, focusing in particular on the relationship between the different functors associated to subgroups and quotients. We then use the results to study induced representations for crossed products by coactions of homogeneous spaces $G/H$ of $G$, which were previously shown by an Huef and Raeburn to be fixed-point algebras for the dual action of $H$ on the crossed product by $G$.

Naturality of Rieffel's Morita equivalence for proper actions

Suppose that a locally compact group $G$ acts freely and properly on the right of a locally compact space $T$. Rieffel proved that if $α$ is an action of $G$ on a $C^*$-algebra $A$ and there is an equivariant embedding of $C_0(T)$ in $M(A)$, then the action $α$ of $G$ on $A$ is proper, and the crossed product $A\rtimes_{α,r}G$ is Morita equivalent to a generalised fixed-point algebra $\Fix(A,α)$ in $M(A)^α$. We show that the assignment $(A,α)\mapsto\Fix(A,α)$ extends to a functor $\Fix$ on a category of $C^*$-dynamical systems in which the isomorphisms are Morita equivalences, and that Rieffel's Morita equivalence implements a natural isomorphism between a crossed-product functor and $\Fix$. From this, we deduce naturality of Mansfield imprimitivity for crossed products by coactions, improving results of Echterhoff-Kaliszewski-Quigg-Raeburn and Kaliszewski-Quigg Raeburn, and naturality of a Morita equivalence for graph algebras due to Kumjian and Pask.

Direct limits, multiresolution analyses, and wavelets

A multiresolution analysis for a Hilbert space realizes the Hilbert space as the direct limit of an increasing sequence of closed subspaces. In a previous paper, we showed how, conversely, direct limits could be used to construct Hilbert spaces which have multiresolution analyses with desired properties. In this paper, we use direct limits, and in particular the universal property which characterizes them, to construct wavelet bases in a variety of concrete Hilbert spaces of functions. Our results apply to the classical situation involving dilation matrices on $L^2(\R^n)$, the wavelets on fractals studied by Dutkay and Jorgensen, and Hilbert spaces of functions on solenoids.

Coverings of k-graphs

k-graphs are higher-rank analogues of directed graphs which were first developed to provide combinatorial models for operator algebras of Cuntz-Krieger type. Here we develop the theory of covering spaces for k-graphs, obtaining a satisfactory version of the usual topological classification in terms of subgroups of a fundamental group. We then use this classification to describe the C*-algebras of covering k-graphs as crossed products by coactions of homogeneous spaces, generalizing recent results on the C*-algebras of graphs.

A family of 2-graphs arising from two-dimensional subshifts

Higher-rank graphs (or $k$-graphs) were introduced by Kumjian and Pask to provide combinatorial models for the higher-rank Cuntz-Krieger $C^*$-algebras of Robertson and Steger. Here we consider a family of finite 2-graphs whose path spaces are dynamical systems of algebraic origin, as studied by Schmidt and others. We analyse the $C^*$-algebras of these 2-graphs, find criteria under which they are simple and purely infinite, and compute their $K$-theory. We find examples whose $C^*$-algebras satisfy the hypotheses of the classification theorem of Kirchberg and Phillips, but are not isomorphic to the $C^*$-algebras of ordinary directed graphs.

Proper actions, fixed-point algebras and naturality in nonabelian duality

Suppose a locally compact group G acts freely and properly on a locally compact Hausdorff space X, and let gamma be the induced action on C_0(X). We consider a category in which the objects are C*-dynamical systems (A, G, alpha) for which there is an equivariant homomorphism of (C_0(X), gamma) into the multiplier algebra M(A). Rieffel has shown that such systems are proper and saturated, and hence have a generalized fixed-point algebra A^alpha which is Morita equivalent to A times_{alpha,r} G. We show that the assignment (A, alpha) maps to A^alpha is functorial, and that Rieffel's Morita equivalence is natural in a suitable sense. We then use our results to prove a categorical version of Landstad duality which characterizes crossed products by coactions, and to prove that Mansfield imprimitivity for crossed products by homogeneous spaces is natural.

Generalized multiresolution analyses with given multiplicity functions

Generalized multiresolution analyses are increasing sequences of subspaces of a Hilbert space $\H$ that fail to be multiresolution analyses in the sense of wavelet theory because the core subspace does not have an orthonormal basis generated by a fixed scaling function. Previous authors have studied a multiplicity function $m$ which, loosely speaking, measures the failure of the GMRA to be an MRA. When the Hilbert space $\H$ is $L^2(\mathbb R^n)$, the possible multiplicity functions have been characterized by Baggett and Merrill. Here we start with a function $m$ satisfying a consistency condition which is known to be necessary, and build a GMRA in an abstract Hilbert space with multiplicity function $m$.

Induction in stages for crossed products of C*-algebras by maximal coactions

Let B be a C*-algebra with a maximal coaction of a locally compact group G, and let N and H be closed normal subgroups of G with N contained in H. We show that the process Ind_(G/H)^G which uses Mansfield's bimodule to induce representations of the crossed product of B by G from those of the restricted crossed product of B by (G/H) is equivalent to the two-stage induction process: Ind_(G/N)^G composed with Ind_(G/H)^(G/N). The proof involves a calculus of symmetric imprimitivity bimodules which relates the bimodule tensor product to the fibred product of the underlying spaces.

Projective multi-resolution analyses arising from direct limits of Hilbert modules

The authors have recently shown how direct limits of Hilbert spaces can be used to construct multi-resolution analyses and wavelets in $L^2(\R)$. Here they investigate similar constructions in the context of Hilbert modules over $C^*$-algebras. For modules over $C(\T^n)$, the results shed light on work of Packer and Rieffel on projective multi-resolution analyses for specific Hilbert $C(\T^n)$-modules of functions on $\R^n$. There are also new applications to modules over $C(C)$ when $C$ is the infinite path space of a directed graph.

Extension problems and non-abelian duality for $C^*$-algebras

Suppose that $H$ is a closed subgroup of a locally compact group $G$. We show that a unitary representation $U$ of $H$ is the restriction of a unitary representation of $G$ if and only if a dual representation $\hat U$ of a crossed product $C^*(G)\rtimes (G/H)$ is regular in an appropriate sense. We then discuss the problem of deciding whether a given representation is regular; we believe that this problem will prove to be an interesting test question in non-abelian duality for crossed products of $C^*$-algebras.

Extension problems for representations of crossed-product C*-algebras

We consider the following problem. Suppose $α$ is an action of a locally compact group $G$ on a $C^*$-algebra $A$, $H$ is a closed subgroup of $G$, and $(π,U)$ is a covariant representation of $(A,H,α)$. For which closed subgroups $K$ containing $H$ is there a covariant representation $(π,V)$ of $(A,K,α)$ such that $V|_H=U$? We answer this problem by providing a criterion involving the induced representation of $(A,G,α)$. We then consider the dual problem for coactions of locally compact groups.

From filters to wavelets via direct limits

We present a new proof of a theorem of Mallat which describes a construction of wavelets starting from a quadrature mirror filter. Our main innovation is to show how the scaling function associated to the filter can be used to identify a certain direct limit of Hilbert spaces with $L^2(\R)$ in such a way that one can immediately identify the wavelet basis. Our arguments also use a pair of isometries introduced by Bratteli and Jorgensen, and exploit the geometry inherent in the Cuntz relations satisfied by these isometries.

Rank-two graphs whose C^*-algebras are direct limits of circle algebras

We describe a class of rank-2 graphs whose C^*-algebras are AT algebras. For a subclass which we call rank-2 Bratteli diagrams, we compute the K-theory of the C*-algebra. We identify rank-2 Bratteli diagrams whose C*-algebras are simple and have real-rank zero, and characterise the K-invariants achieved by such algebras. We give examples of rank-2 Bratteli diagrams whose C*-algebras contain as full corners the irrational rotation algebras and the Bunce-Deddens algebras.

Covariant representations of Hecke algebras and imprimitivity for crossed products by homogeneous spaces

For discrete Hecke pairs $(G,H)$, we introduce a notion of covariant representation which reduces in the case where $H$ is normal to the usual definition of covariance for the action of $G/H$ on $c_0(G/H)$ by right translation; in many cases where $G$ is a semidirect product, it can also be expressed in terms of covariance for a semigroup action. We use this covariance to characterise the representations of $c_0(G/H)$ which are multiples of the multiplication representation on $\ell^2(G/H)$, and more generally, we prove an imprimitivity theorem for regular representations of certain crossed products by coactions of homogeneous spaces. We thus obtain new criteria for extending unitary representations from $H$ to $G$.

A Categorical Approach to Imprimitivity Theorems for C*-Dynamical Systems

Imprimitivity theorems provide a fundamental tool for studying the representation theory and structure of crossed-product C*-algebras. In this work, we show that the Imprimitivity Theorem for induced algebras, Green's Imprimitivity Theorem for actions of groups, and Mansfield's Imprimitivity Theorem for coactions of groups can all be viewed as natural equivalences between various crossed-product functors among certain equivariant categories. The categories involved have C*-algebras with actions or coactions (or both) of a fixed locally compact group G as their objects, and equivariant equivalence classes of right-Hilbert bimodules as their morphisms. Composition is given by the balanced tensor product of bimodules. The functors involved arise from taking crossed products; restricting, inflating, and decomposing actions and coactions; inducing actions; and various combinations of these. Several applications of this categorical approach are also presented, including some intriguing relationships between the Green and Mansfield bimodules, and between restriction and induction of representations.
