Exel's Crossed Product and Relative Cuntz-Pimsner Algebras

We consider Exel's new construction of a crossed product of a C*-algebra A by an endomorphism α. We prove that this crossed product is universal for an appropriate family of covariant representations, and we show that it can be realised as a relative Cuntz-Pimsner algbera. We describe a necessary and sufficient condition for the canonical map from A into the crossed product to be injective, and present several examples to demonstrate the scope of this result. We also prove a gauge-invariant uniqueness theorem for the crossed product.

Classification theorems for the C*-algebras of graphs with sinks

We consider graphs E which have been obtained by adding one or more sinks to a fixed directed graph G. We classify the C*-algebra of E up to a very strong equivalence relation, which insists, loosely speaking, that C*(G) is kept fixed. The main invariants are vectors W_E : G^0 -> N which describe how the sinks are attached to G; more precisely, the invariants are the classes of the W_E in the cokernel of the map A-I, where A is the adjacency matrix of the graph G.

Fundamental groupoids of k-graphs

k-graphs are higher-rank analogues of directed graphs which were first developed to provide combinatorial models for operator algebras of Cuntz-Krieger type. Here we develop a theory of the fundamental groupoid of a k-graph, and relate it to the fundamental groupoid of an associated graph called the 1-skeleton. We also explore the failure, in general, of k-graphs to faithfully embed into their fundamental groupoids.

Subquotients of Hecke C^*-algebras

The Bost-Connes Hecke C^*-algebra can be regarded as a direct limit of subalgebras involving finite sets of primes. Each of these finite-prime analogues of the Bost-Connes algebra is a crossed product by a semigroup N^F, where F is finite. We describe composition series of ideals for these semigroup crossed products in which the intermediate subquotients are finite direct sums of classifiable AT-algebras. We then use similar techniques to identify subquotients of the Bost-Connes algebra as classifiable AT-algebras.

Twisted actions and the obstruction to extending unitary representations of subgroups

Suppose that $G$ is a locally compact group and $π$ is a (not necessarily irreducible) unitary representation of a closed normal subgroup $N$ of $G$ on a Hilbert space $H$. We extend results of Clifford and Mackey to determine when $π$ extends to a unitary representation of $G$ on the same space $H$ in terms of a cohomological obstruction.

The $C^*$-algebras of finitely aligned higher-rank graphs

We generalise the theory of Cuntz-Krieger families and graph algebras to the class of finitely aligned $k$-graphs. This class contains in particular all row-finite $k$-graphs. The Cuntz-Krieger relations for non-row-finite $k$-graphs look significantly different from the usual ones, and this substantially complicates the analysis of the graph algebra. We prove a gauge-invariant uniqueness theorem and a Cuntz-Krieger uniqueness theorem for the $C^*$-algebras of finitely aligned $k$-graphs.

Product systems of graphs and the Toeplitz algebras of higher-rank graphs

There has recently been much interest in the $C^*$-algebras of directed graphs. Here we consider product systems $E$ of directed graphs over semigroups and associated $C^*$-algebras $C^*(E)$ and $\mathcal{T}C^*(E)$ which generalise the higher-rank graph algebras of Kumjian-Pask and their Toeplitz analogues. We study these algebras by constructing from $E$ a product system $X(E)$ of Hilbert bimodules, and applying recent results of Fowler about the Toeplitz algebras of such systems. Fowler's hypotheses turn out to be very interesting graph-theoretically, and indicate new relations which will have to be added to the usual Cuntz-Krieger relations to obtain a satisfactory theory of Cuntz-Krieger algebras for product systems of graphs; our algebras $C^*(E)$ and $\mathcal{T}C^*(E)$ are universal for families of partial isometries satisfying these relations. Our main result is a uniqueness theorem for $\mathcal{T}C^*(E)$ which has particularly interesting implications for the $C^*$-algebras of non-row-finite higher-rank graphs. This theorem is apparently beyond the reach of Fowler's theory, and our proof requires a detailed analysis of the expectation onto the diagonal in $\mathcal{T}C^*(E)$.

Partial-isometric crossed products by semigroups of endomorphisms

Let $Γ^+$ be the positive cone in a totally ordered abelian group $Γ$, and let $α$ be an action of $Γ^+$ by endomorphisms of a $C^*$-algebra $A$. We consider a new kind of crossed-product $C^*$-algebra $A\times_αΓ^+$, which is generated by a faithful copy of $A$ and a representation of $Γ^+$ as partial isometries. We claim that these crossed products provide a rich and tractable family of Toeplitz algebras for product systems of Hilbert bimodules, as recently studied by Fowler, and we illustrate this by proving detailed structure theorems for actions by forward and backward shifts.

Mansfield's imprimitivity theorem for arbitrary closed subgroups

Let $δ$ be a nondegenerate coaction of G on a C*-algebra B, and let H be a closed subgroup of G. The dual action of H on $B\times_δG$ is proper and saturated in the sense of Rieffel, and the generalised fixed-point algebra is the crossed product of B by the homogeneous space G/H. The resulting Morita equivalence is a version of Mansfield's imprimitivity theorem which requires neither amenability nor normality of H.

Coverings of Directed Graphs and Crossed Products of C*-algebras by Coactions of Homogeneous Spaces

The graph C*-algebra of a directed graph E is the universal C*-algebra generated by a family of partial isometries satisfying relations which reflect the path structure of E. In the first part of this paper we consider coverings of directed graphs: morphisms p:F->E which are local isomorphisms. We show that the graph algebra C*(F) can be recovered from C*(E) as a crossed product by a coaction of a homogeneous space associated to the fundamental group π_1 (E). These crossed products provide a good model for a general theory of crossed products by homogeneous spaces. The second part of the paper is devoted to building a framework for studying crossed products by homogeneous spaces using Rieffel's theory of proper actions.

Representations of Hecke algebras and dilations of semigroup crossed products

We consider a family of Hecke C*-algebras which can be realised as crossed products by semigroups of endomorphisms. We show by dilating representations of the semigroup crossed product that the category of representations of the Hecke algebra is equivalent to the category of continuous unitary representations of a totally disconnected locally compact group.

The ideal structure of the C*-algebras of infinite graphs

We classify the gauge-invariant ideals in the C*-algebras of infinite directed graphs, and describe the quotients as graph algebras. We then use these results to identify the gauge-invariant primitive ideals in terms of the structural properties of the graph, and describe the K-theory of the C*-algebras of arbitrary infinite graphs.

Higher-rank graphs and their C*-algebras

We consider the higher-rank graphs introduced by Kumjian and Pask as models for higher-rank Cuntz-Krieger algebras. We describe a variant of the Cuntz-Krieger relations which applies to graphs with sources, and describe a local convexity condition which characterises the higher-rank graphs that admit a nontrivial Cuntz-Krieger family. We then prove versions of the uniqueness theorems and classifications of ideals for the C*-algebras generated by Cuntz-Krieger families.

Regularity of induced representations and a theorem of Quigg and Spielberg

The Symmetric Imprimitivity Theorem provides a Morita equivalence between two crossed products of induced C*-algebras. Quigg and Spielberg proved, by indirect but ingenious methods, that the symmetric imprimitivity theorem has an analog for reduced crossed products. Here we identify the representations which induce to regular representations under the equivalence of the symmetric theorem. We use this result to show that regular representations themselves almost always induce to regular representations. In addition, we obtain a direct proof of the theorem of Quigg and Spielberg.

Proper actions on imprimitivity bimodules and decompositions of Morita equivalences

We consider a class of proper actions of locally compact groups on imprimitivity bimodules over C*-algebras which behave like the proper actions on C*-algebras introduced by Rieffel in 1988. We prove that every such action gives rise to a Morita equivalence between a crossed product and a generalized fixed-point algebra, and in doing so make several innovations which improve the applicability of Rieffel's theory. We then show how our construction can be used to obtain canonical tensor-product decompositions of important Morita equivalences. Our results show, for example, that the different proofs of the symmetric imprimitivity theorem for actions on induced algebras yield isomorphic equivalences. A similar analysis of the symmetric imprimitivity theorem for graph algebras gives new information about the amenability of actions on graph algebras.

Naturality and Induced Representations

We show that induction of covariant representations for C*-dynamical systems is natural in the sense that it gives a natural transformation between certain crossed-product functors. This involves setting up suitable categories of C*-algebras and dynamical systems, and extending the usual constructions of crossed products to define the appropriate functors. From this point of view, Green's Imprimitivity Theorem identifies the functors for which induction is a natural equivalence. Various spcecial cases of these results have previously been obtained on an ad hoc basis.

The ideal structure of the Hecke C*-algebra of Bost and Connes

We compute explicitly the primitive ideal space of the Bost-Connes Hecke C*-algebra by embedding it as a full corner in a transformation group C*-algebra and applying a general theorem of Williams. This requires the computation of the quasi-orbit space for the action of the multiplicative positive rationals on the space of finite adeles. We then carry out a similar computation for the action of the nonzero rationals on the space of full adeles.
