Robust Stability of Quantum Systems with Nonlinear Dynamic Uncertainties

This paper considers the problem of robust stability for a class of uncertain nonlinear quantum systems subject to unknown perturbations in the system Hamiltonian. The nominal system is a linear quantum system defined by a linear vector of coupling operators and a quadratic Hamiltonian. This paper extends previous results on the robust stability of nonlinear quantum systems to allow for quantum systems with dynamic uncertainties. These dynamic uncertainties are required to satisfy a certain quantum stochastic integral quadratic constraint. The robust stability condition is given in terms of a strict bounded real condition. This result is applied to the robust stability analysis of an optical parametric amplifier.

Notes on Coherent Feedback Control for Linear Quantum Systems

This paper considers some formulations and possible approaches to the coherent LQG and $H^\infty$ quantum control problems. Some new results for these problems are presented in the case of annihilation operator only quantum systems showing that in this case, the optimal controllers are trivial controllers.

Sampling-based learning control of inhomogeneous quantum ensembles

Compensation for parameter dispersion is a significant challenge for control of inhomogeneous quantum ensembles. In this paper, we present a systematic methodology of sampling-based learning control (SLC) for simultaneously steering the members of inhomogeneous quantum ensembles to the same desired state. The SLC method is employed for optimal control of the state-to-state transition probability for inhomogeneous quantum ensembles of spins as well as $Λ$ type atomic systems. The procedure involves the steps of (i) training and (ii) testing. In the training step, a generalized system is constructed by sampling members according to the distribution of inhomogeneous parameters drawn from the ensemble. A gradient flow based learning and optimization algorithm is adopted to find the control for the generalized system. In the process of testing, a number of additional ensemble members are randomly selected to evaluate the control performance. Numerical results are presented showing the success of the SLC method.

Robust Decentralized Stabilization of Markovian Jump Large-Scale Systems: A Neighboring Mode Dependent Control Approach

This paper is concerned with the decentralized stabilization problem for a class of uncertain large-scale systems with Markovian jump parameters. The controllers use local subsystem states and neighboring mode information to generate local control inputs. A sufficient condition involving rank constrained linear matrix inequalities is proposed for the design of such controllers. A numerical example is given to illustrate the developed theory.

Optimal Lyapunov quantum control on two-level systems: convergence and extended techniques

Taking a two-level system as an example, we show that a strong control field may enhance the efficiency of optimal Lyapunov quantum control in [Hou et al., Phys. Rev. A \textbf{86}, 022321 (2012)] but could decrease its control fidelity. A relationship between the strength of the control field and the control fidelity is established. An extended technique, which combines free evolution and external control, is proposed to improve the control fidelity. We analytically demonstrate that the extended technique can be used to design a control law for steering a two-level system exactly to the target state. In such a way, the convergence of the extended optimal Lyapunov quantum control can be guaranteed.

Quantum Implemention of an LTI System with the minimal number of additional quantum noise inputs

Physical Realizability addresses the question of whether it is possible to implement a given LTI system as a quantum system. It is in general not true that a given synthesized quantum controller described by a set of stochastic differential equations is equivalent to some physically meaningful quantum system. However, if additional quantum noises are permitted in the implementation it is always possible to implement an arbitrary LTI system as a quantum system. In this paper we give an expression for the exact number of noises required to implement a given LTI system as a quantum system. Furthermore, we focus our attention on proving that this is a minimum, that is, it is not possible to implement the system as a quantum system with a smaller number of additional quantum noises.

Quantum Popov robust stability analysis of an optical cavity containing a saturated Kerr medium

This paper applies results on the robust stability of nonlinear quantum systems to a system consisting an optical cavity containing a saturated Kerr medium. The system is characterized by a Hamiltonian operator which contains a non-quadratic term involving a quartic function of the annihilation and creation operators. A saturated version of the Kerr nonlinearity leads to a sector bounded nonlinearity which enables a quantum small gain theorem to be applied to this system in order to analyze its stability. Also, a non-quadratic version of a quantum Popov stability criterion is presented and applied to analyze the stability of this system.

A Kalman Decomposition for Possibly Controllable Uncertain Linear Systems

This paper considers the structure of uncertain linear systems building on concepts of robust unobservability and possible controllability which were introduced in previous papers. The paper presents a new geometric characterization of the possibly controllable states. When combined with previous geometric results on robust unobservability, the results of this paper lead to a general Kalman type decomposition for uncertain linear systems which can be applied to the problem of obtaining reduced order uncertain system models.

Robust Smoothing for Discrete-Time Uncertain Nonlinear Systems

This paper derives recursion equations for a robust smoothing problem for a class of nonlinear systems with uncertainties in modeling and exogenous noise sources. The systems considered operate in discrete-time and the uncertainties are modeled in terms of a sum quadratic constraint. The robust smoothing problem is solved in terms of a forward-time and a reverse-time filter. Both these filters are formulated in terms of set-valued state estimators and are recast into subsidiary optimal control problems. These optimal control problems are described in terms of discrete-time Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equations, whose approximate solutions lead to recursive Riccati difference equations, filter state equations, and level shift scalar equations for the forward-time and the reverse-time filters.

Robust Stability Analysis of an Optical Parametric Amplifier Quantum System

This paper considers the problem of robust stability for a class of uncertain nonlinear quantum systems subject to unknown perturbations in the system Hamiltonian. The case of a nominal linear quantum system is considered with non-quadratic perturbations to the system Hamiltonian. The paper extends recent results on the robust stability of nonlinear quantum systems to allow for non-quadratic perturbations to the Hamiltonian which depend on multiple parameters. A robust stability condition is given in terms of a strict bounded real condition. This result is then applied to the robust stability analysis of a nonlinear quantum system which is a model of an optical parametric amplifier.

Sampled-data design for robust control of a single qubit

This paper presents a sampled-data approach for the robust control of a single qubit (quantum bit). The required robustness is defined using a sliding mode domain and the control law is designed offline and then utilized online with a single qubit having bounded uncertainties. Two classes of uncertainties are considered involving the system Hamiltonian and the coupling strength of the system-environment interaction. Four cases are analyzed in detail including without decoherence, with amplitude damping decoherence, phase damping decoherence and depolarizing decoherence. Sampling periods are specifically designed for these cases to guarantee the required robustness. Two sufficient conditions are presented for guiding the design of unitary control for the cases without decoherence and with amplitude damping decoherence. The proposed approach has potential applications in quantum error-correction and in constructing robust quantum gates.

A Popov Stability Condition for Uncertain Linear Quantum Systems

This paper considers a Popov type approach to the problem of robust stability for a class of uncertain linear quantum systems subject to unknown perturbations in the system Hamiltonian. A general stability result is given for a general class of perturbations to the system Hamiltonian. Then, the special case of a nominal linear quantum system is considered with quadratic perturbations to the system Hamiltonian. In this case, a robust stability condition is given in terms of a frequency domain condition which is of the same form as the standard Popov stability condition.

Adaptive Continuous Homodyne Phase Estimation Using Robust Fixed-Interval Smoothing

Adaptive homodyne estimation of a continuously evolving optical phase using time-symmetric quantum smoothing has been demonstrated experimentally to provide superior accuracy in the phase estimate compared to adaptive or nonadaptive estimation using filtering alone. Here, we illustrate how the mean-square error in the adaptive phase estimate may be further reduced below the standard quantum limit for the stochastic noise process considered by using a Rauch-Tung-Striebel smoother as the estimator, alongwith an optimal Kalman filter in the feedback loop. Further, the estimation using smoothing can be made robust to uncertainties in the underlying parameters of the noise process modulating the system phase to be estimated. This has been done using a robust fixed-interval smoother designed for uncertain systems satisfying a certain integral quadratic constraint.

Robust Estimation of Optical Phase Varying as a Continuous Resonant Process

It is well-known that adaptive homodyne estimation of continuously varying optical phase provides superior accuracy in the phase estimate as compared to adaptive or non-adaptive static estimation. However, most phase estimation schemes rely on precise knowledge of the underlying parameters of the system under measurement, and performance deteriorates significantly with changes in these parameters; hence it is desired to develop robust estimation techniques immune to such uncertainties. In related works, we have already shown how adaptive homodyne estimation can be made robust to uncertainty in an underlying parameter of the phase varying as a simplistic Ornstein-Uhlenbeck stochastic noise process. Here, we demonstrate robust phase estimation for a more complicated resonant noise process using a guaranteed cost robust filter.

Negative Imaginary Systems Theory in the Robust Control of Highly Resonant Flexible Structures

This paper covers recent developments in the theory of negative imaginary systems and their application to the control of highly resonant flexible structures. The theory of negative imaginary systems arose out of a desire to unify a number of classical methods for the control of lightly damped structures with collocated force actuators and position sensors including positive position feedback and integral force feedback. The key result is a stability result which shows why these methods are guaranteed to yield robust closed loop stability in the face of unmodelled spillover dynamics. Related results to be presented connect the theory of negative imaginary systems to positive real systems theory and a negative imaginary lemma has been established which is analogous to the positive real lemma. The paper also presents recent controller synthesis results based on the theory of negative imaginary systems.

Coherent Quantum Filtering for Physically Realizable Linear Quantum Plants

The paper is concerned with a problem of coherent (measurement-free) filtering for physically realizable (PR) linear quantum plants. The state variables of such systems satisfy canonical commutation relations and are governed by linear quantum stochastic differential equations, dynamically equivalent to those of an open quantum harmonic oscillator. The problem is to design another PR quantum system, connected unilaterally to the output of the plant and playing the role of a quantum filter, so as to minimize a mean square discrepancy between the dynamic variables of the plant and the output of the filter. This coherent quantum filtering (CQF) formulation is a simplified feedback-free version of the coherent quantum LQG control problem which remains open despite recent studies. The CQF problem is transformed into a constrained covariance control problem which is treated by using the Frechet differentiation of an appropriate Lagrange function with respect to the matrices of the filter.

Quantum Robust Stability of a Small Josephson Junction in a Resonant Cavity

This paper applies recent results on the robust stability of nonlinear quantum systems to the case of a Josephson junction in a resonant cavity. The Josephson junction is characterized by a Hamiltonian operator which contains a non-quadratic term involving a cosine function. This leads to a sector bounded nonlinearity which enables the previously developed theory to be applied to this system in order to analyze its stability.
