Time Averaged Consensus in a Direct Coupled Distributed Coherent Quantum Observer

This paper considers the problem of constructing a distributed direct coupling quantum observer for a closed linear quantum system. The proposed distributed observer consists of a network of quantum harmonic oscillators and it is shown that the distributed observer converges to a consensus in a time averaged sense in which each component of the observer estimates the specified output of the quantum plant. An example and simulations are included to illustrate the properties of the distributed observer.

A Gradient Descent Approach to Optimal Coherent Quantum LQG Controller Design

This paper is concerned with the Coherent Quantum Linear Quadratic Gaussian (CQLQG) control problem of finding a stabilizing measurement-free quantum controller for a quantum plant so as to minimize an infinite-horizon mean square performance index for the fully quantum closed-loop system. In comparison with the observation-actuation structure of classical controllers, the coherent quantum feedback is less invasive to the quantum dynamics and quantum information. Both the plant and the controller are open quantum systems whose dynamic variables satisfy the canonical commutation relations (CCRs) of a quantum harmonic oscillator and are governed by linear quantum stochastic differential equations (QSDEs). In order to correspond to such oscillators, these QSDEs must satisfy physical realizability (PR) conditions, which are organised as quadratic constraints on the controller matrices and reflect the preservation of CCRs in time. The CQLQG problem is a constrained optimization problem for the steady-state quantum covariance matrix of the plant-controller system satisfying an algebraic Lyapunov equation. We propose a gradient descent algorithm equipped with adaptive stepsize selection for the numerical solution of the problem. The algorithm finds a local minimum of the LQG cost over the parameters of the Hamiltonian and coupling operators of a stabilizing PR quantum controller, thus taking the PR constraints into account. A convergence analysis of the proposed algorithm is presented. A numerical example of a locally optimal CQLQG controller design is provided to demonstrate the algorithm performance.

Quantum Noises, Physical Realizability and Coherent Quantum Feedback Control

Physical Realizability addresses the question of whether it is possible to implement a given linear time invariant (LTI) system as a quantum system. A given synthesized quantum controller described by a set of stochastic differential equations does not necessarily correspond to a physically meaningful quantum system. However, if additional quantum noises are permitted in the implementation, it is always possible to implement an arbitrary LTI system as a quantum system. In this paper, we give an expression for the number of introduced noise channels required to implement a given LTI system as a quantum system. We then consider the special case where only the transfer function to be implemented is of interest. We give results showing when it is possible to implement a transfer function as a quantum system by introducing the same number of quantum noises as there are system outputs. Finally, we demonstrate the utility of these results by providing an algorithm for obtaining a suboptimal solution to a coherent quantum LQG control problem.

Coherent-Classical Estimation versus Purely-Classical Estimation for Linear Quantum Systems

We consider a coherent-classical estimation scheme for a class of linear quantum systems. It comprises an estimator that is a mixed quantum-classical system without involving coherent feedback. The estimator yields a classical estimate of a variable for the quantum plant. We demonstrate that for a passive plant that can be characterized by annihilation operators only, such coherent-classical estimation provides no improvement over purely-classical estimation. An example is also given which shows that if the plant is not assumed to be an annihilation operator only quantum system, it is possible to get better estimates with such coherent-classical estimation compared with purely-classical estimation.

A Direct Coupling Coherent Quantum Observer for a Single Qubit Finite Level Quantum System

This paper considers the problem of constructing a direct coupling quantum observer for a single qubit finite level quantum system plant. The proposed observer is a single mode linear quantum system which is shown to be able to estimate one of the plant variables in a time averaged sense. A numerical example and simulations are included to illustrate the properties of the observer.

Preparation of Pure Gaussian States via Cascaded Quantum Systems

This paper provides an alternative approach to the problem of preparing pure Gaussian states in a linear quantum system. It is shown that any pure Gaussian state can be generated by a cascade of one-dimensional open quantum harmonic oscillators, without any direct interaction Hamiltonians between these oscillators. This is physically advantageous from an experimental point of view. An example on the preparation of two-mode squeezed states is given to illustrate the theory.

A Direct Coupling Coherent Quantum Observer

This paper considers the problem of constructing a direct coupling quantum observer for a closed linear quantum system. The proposed observer is shown to be able to estimate some but not all of the plant variables in a time averaged sense. A simple example and simulations are included to illustrate the properties of the observer.

Robust Smoothing for Estimating Optical Phase Varying as a Continuous Resonant Process

Continuous phase estimation is known to be superior in accuracy as compared to static estimation. The estimation process is, however, desired to be made robust to uncertainties in the underlying parameters. Here, homodyne phase estimation of coherent and squeezed states of light, evolving continuously under the influence of a second-order resonant noise process, are made robust to parameter uncertainties using a robust fixed-interval smoother, designed for uncertain systems satisfying a certain integral quadratic constraint. We observe that such a robust smoother provides improved worst-case performance over the optimal smoother and also performs better than a robust filter for the uncertain system.

Performance Analysis and Coherent Guaranteed Cost Control for Uncertain Quantum Systems

This paper presents several results on performance analysis for a class of uncertain linear quantum systems subject to either quadratic or non-quadratic perturbations in the system Hamiltonian. Also, coherent guaranteed cost controllers are designed for the uncertain quantum systems to achieve improved control performance. The coherent controller is realized by adding a control Hamiltonian to the quantum system and its performance is demonstrated by an example.

Analysis of Linear Quantum Optical Networks

This paper is concerned with the analysis of linear quantum optical networks. It provides a systematic approach to the construction a model for a given quantum network in terms of a system of quantum stochastic differential equations. This corresponds to a classical state space model. The linear quantum optical networks under consideration consist of interconnections between optical cavities, optical squeezers, and beamsplitters. These models can then be used in the design of quantum feedback control systems for these networks.

Guaranteed Non-quadratic Performance for Quantum Systems with Nonlinear Uncertainties

This paper presents a robust performance analysis result for a class of uncertain quantum systems containing sector bounded nonlinearities arising from perturbations to the system Hamiltonian. An LMI condition is given for calculating a guaranteed upper bound on a non-quadratic cost function. This result is illustrated with an example involving a Josephson junction in an electromagnetic cavity.

Physical Realizability and Mean Square Performance of Translation Invariant Networks of Interacting Linear Quantum Stochastic Systems

This paper is concerned with translation invariant networks of linear quantum stochastic systems with nearest neighbour interaction mediated by boson fields. The systems are associated with sites of a one-dimensional chain or a multidimensional lattice and are governed by coupled linear quantum stochastic differential equations (QSDEs). Such interconnections of open quantum systems are relevant, for example, to the phonon theory of crystalline solids, atom trapping in optical lattices and quantum metamaterials. In order to represent a large-scale open quantum harmonic oscillator, the coefficients of the coupled QSDEs must satisfy certain physical realizability conditions. These are established in the form of matrix algebraic equations for the parameters of an individual building block of the network and its interaction with the neighbours and external fields. We also discuss the computation of mean square performance functionals with block Toeplitz weighting matrices for such systems in the thermodynamic limit per site for unboundedly increasing fragments of the lattice.

Quantum Ensemble Classification: A Sampling-based Learning Control Approach

Quantum ensemble classification has significant applications in discrimination of atoms (or molecules), separation of isotopic molecules and quantum information extraction. However, quantum mechanics forbids deterministic discrimination among nonorthogonal states. The classification of inhomogeneous quantum ensembles is very challenging since there exist variations in the parameters characterizing the members within different classes. In this paper, we recast quantum ensemble classification as a supervised quantum learning problem. A systematic classification methodology is presented by using a sampling-based learning control (SLC) approach for quantum discrimination. The classification task is accomplished via simultaneously steering members belonging to different classes to their corresponding target states (e.g., mutually orthogonal states). Firstly a new discrimination method is proposed for two similar quantum systems. Then an SLC method is presented for quantum ensemble classification. Numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach for the binary classification of two-level quantum ensembles and the multiclass classification of multilevel quantum ensembles.

Sampling-based Learning Control for Quantum Systems with Hamiltonian Uncertainties

Robust control design for quantum systems has been recognized as a key task in the development of practical quantum technology. In this paper, we present a systematic numerical methodology of sampling-based learning control (SLC) for control design of quantum systems with Hamiltonian uncertainties. The SLC method includes two steps of "training" and "testing and evaluation". In the training step, an augmented system is constructed by sampling uncertainties according to possible distributions of uncertainty parameters. A gradient flow based learning and optimization algorithm is adopted to find the control for the augmented system. In the process of testing and evaluation, a number of samples obtained through sampling the uncertainties are tested to evaluate the control performance. Numerical results demonstrate the success of the SLC approach. The SLC method has potential applications for robust control design of quantum systems.

This paper introduces a problem of coherent-classical estimation for a class of linear quantum systems. In this problem, the estimator is a mixed quantum-classical system which produces a classical estimate of a system variable. The coherent-classical estimator may also involve coherent feedback. An example involving optical squeezers is given to illustrate the efficacy of this idea.

A Robust Continuous Time Fixed Lag Smoother for Nonlinear Uncertain Systems

This paper presents a robust fixed lag smoother for a class of nonlinear uncertain systems. A unified scheme, which combines a nonlinear robust estimator with a stable fixed lag smoother, is presented to improve the error covariance of the estimation. The robust fixed lag smoother is based on the use of Integral Quadratic Constraints and minimax LQG control. The state estimator uses a copy of the system nonlinearity in the estimator and combines an approximate model of the delayed states to produce a smoothed signal. In order to see the effectiveness of the method, it is applied to a quantum optical phase estimation problem. Results show significant improvement in the error covariance of the estimator using fixed lag smoother in the presence of nonlinear uncertainty.
