A Modified Frequency Domain Condition for the Physical Realizability of Linear Quantum Stochastic Systems

This note is concerned with a modified version of the frequency domain physical realizability (PR) condition for linear quantum systems. We consider open quantum systems whose dynamic variables satisfy the canonical commutation relations of an open quantum harmonic oscillator and are governed by linear quantum stochastic differential equations (QSDEs). In order to correspond to physical quantum systems, these QSDEs must satisfy PR conditions. We provide a relatively simple proof that the PR condition is equivalent to the frequency domain $(J,J)$-unitarity of the input-output transfer function and orthogonality of the feedthrough matrix of the system without the technical spectral assumptions required in previous work. We also show that the poles and transmission zeros associated with the transfer function of PR linear quantum systems are the mirror reflections of each other about the imaginary axis. An example is provided to illustrate the results.

The Kalman Decomposition for Linear Quantum Stochastic Systems

The Kalman decomposition for Linear Quantum Stochastic Systems in the real quadrature operator representation, that was derived indirectly in [1] by the authors, is derived here directly, using the "one-sided symplectic" SVD-like factorization of [2] on the observability matrix of the system.

On Transfer Function Realizations for Linear Quantum Stochastic Systems

The realization of transfer functions of Linear Quantum Stochastic Systems (LQSSs) is an issue of fundamental importance for the practical applications of such systems, especially as coherent controllers for other quantum systems. In this paper, we review two realization methods proposed by the authors in [1], [2], [3], [4]. The first one uses a cascade of a static linear quantum-optical network and single-mode optical cavities, while the second uses a feedback network of such cavities, along with static linear quantum-optical networks that pre- and post-process the cavity network inputs and outputs.

Learning robust control for generating universal quantum gates

Constructing a set of universal quantum gates is a fundamental task for quantum computation. The existence of noises, disturbances and fluctuations is unavoidable during the process of implementing quantum gates for most practical quantum systems. This paper employs a sampling-based learning method to find robust control pulses for generating a set of universal quantum gates. Numerical results show that the learned robust control fields are insensitive to disturbances, uncertainties and fluctuations during the process of realizing universal quantum gates.

Cascade and locally dissipative realizations of linear quantum systems for pure Gaussian state covariance assignment

This paper presents two realizations of linear quantum systems for covariance assignment corresponding to pure Gaussian states. The first one is called a cascade realization; given any covariance matrix corresponding to a pure Gaussian state, we can construct a cascaded quantum system generating that state. The second one is called a locally dissipative realization; given a covariance matrix corresponding to a pure Gaussian state, if it satisfies certain conditions, we can construct a linear quantum system that has only local interactions with its environment and achieves the assigned covariance matrix. Both realizations are illustrated by examples from quantum optics.

Robust manipulation of superconducting qubits in the presence of fluctuations

Superconducting quantum systems are promising candidates for quantum information processing due to their scalability and design flexibility. However, the existence of defects, fluctuations, and inaccuracies is unavoidable for practical superconducting quantum circuits. In this paper, a sampling-based learning control (SLC) method is used to guide the design of control fields for manipulating superconducting quantum systems. Numerical results for one-qubit systems and coupled two-qubit systems show that the "smart" fields learned using the SLC method can achieve robust manipulation of superconducting qubits, even in the presence of large fluctuations and inaccuracies.

Performance Analysis and Coherent Guaranteed Cost Control for Uncertain Quantum Systems Using Small Gain and Popov Methods

This paper extends applications of the quantum small gain and Popov methods from existing results on robust stability to performance analysis results for a class of uncertain quantum systems. This class of systems involves a nominal linear quantum system and is subject to quadratic perturbations in the system Hamiltonian. Based on these two methods, coherent guaranteed cost controllers are designed for a given quantum system to achieve improved control performance. An illustrative example also shows that the quantum Popov approach can obtain less conservative results than the quantum small gain approach for the same uncertain quantum system.

A Reduced Order Direct Coupling Coherent Quantum Observer for a Complex Quantum Plant

This paper extends previous results on constructing a direct coupling quantum observer for a quantum harmonic oscillator system. In this case, we consider a complex linear quantum system plant consisting of a network of quantum harmonic oscillators. Conditions are given for which there exists a direct coupling observer which estimates a collection of variables in the quantum plant. It is shown that the order of the observer can be the same as the number of variables to be estimated when this number is even and thus this is a reduced order observer.

Quantum Linear Systems Theory

This paper surveys some recent results on the theory of quantum linear systems and presents them within a unified framework. Quantum linear systems are a class of systems whose dynamics, which are described by the laws of quantum mechanics, take the specific form of a set of linear quantum stochastic differential equations (QSDEs). Such systems commonly arise in the area of quantum optics and related disciplines. Systems whose dynamics can be described or approximated by linear QSDEs include interconnections of optical cavities, beam-spitters, phase-shifters, optical parametric amplifiers, optical squeezers, and cavity quantum electrodynamic systems. With advances in quantum technology, the feedback control of such quantum systems is generating new challenges in the field of control theory. Potential applications of such quantum feedback control systems include quantum computing, quantum error correction, quantum communications, gravity wave detection, metrology, atom lasers, and superconducting quantum circuits. A recently emerging approach to the feedback control of quantum linear systems involves the use of a controller which itself is a quantum linear system. This approach to quantum feedback control, referred to as coherent quantum feedback control, has the advantage that it does not destroy quantum information, is fast, and has the potential for efficient implementation. This paper discusses recent results concerning the synthesis of H-infinity optimal controllers for linear quantum systems in the coherent control case. An important issue which arises both in the modelling of linear quantum systems and in the synthesis of linear coherent quantum controllers is the issue of physical realizability. This issue relates to the property of whether a given set of QSDEs corresponds to a physical quantum system satisfying the laws of quantum mechanics.

A Quantum Extended Kalman Filter

A stochastic filter uses a series of measurements over time to produce estimates of unknown variables based on a dynamic model. For a quantum system, such an algorithm is provided by a quantum filter, which is also known as a stochastic master equation (SME). For a linear quantum system subject to linear measurements and Gaussian noise, the quantum filter reduces to a quantum Kalman filter. In this article, we introduce a quantum extended Kalman filter (quantum EKF), which applies a commutative approximation and a time-varying linearization to non-commutative quantum stochastic differential equations (QSDEs). We will show that there are conditions under which a filter similar to the classical EKF can be implemented for quantum systems. The boundedness of estimation errors and the filtering problems with `state-dependent' covariances for process and measurement noises are also discussed. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the quantum EKF by applying it to systems which involve multiple modes, nonlinear Hamiltonians and simultaneous jump-diffusive measurements.

Directly Coupled Observers for Quantum Harmonic Oscillators with Discounted Mean Square Cost Functionals and Penalized Back-action

This paper is concerned with quantum harmonic oscillators consisting of a quantum plant and a directly coupled coherent quantum observer. We employ discounted quadratic performance criteria in the form of exponentially weighted time averages of second-order moments of the system variables. A coherent quantum filtering (CQF) problem is formulated as the minimization of the discounted mean square of an estimation error, with which the dynamic variables of the observer approximate those of the plant. The cost functional also involves a quadratic penalty on the plant-observer coupling matrix in order to mitigate the back-action of the observer on the covariance dynamics of the plant. For the discounted mean square optimal CQF problem with penalized back-action, we establish first-order necessary conditions of optimality in the form of algebraic matrix equations. By using the Hamiltonian structure of the Heisenberg dynamics and related Lie-algebraic techniques, we represent this set of equations in a more explicit form in the case of equally dimensioned plant and observer.

Fault Tolerant Filtering and Fault Detection for Quantum Systems Driven By Fields in Single Photon States

The purpose of this paper is to solve a fault tolerant filtering and fault detection problem for a class of open quantum systems driven by a continuous-mode bosonic input field in single photon states when the systems are subject to stochastic faults. Optimal estimates of both the system observables and the fault process are simultaneously calculated and characterized by a set of coupled recursive quantum stochastic differential equations.

LQG feedback control of a class of linear non-Markovian quantum systems

In this paper we present a linear quadratic Gaussian (LQG) feedback control strategy for a class of linear non-Markovian quantum systems. The feedback control law is designed based on the estimated states of a whitening quantum filter for an augmented Markovian model of the non-Markovian open quantum systems. In this augmented Markovian model, an ancillary system plays the role of internal modes of the environment converting white noise into Lorentzian noise and a principal system obeys non-Markovian dynamics due to the direct interaction with the ancillary system. The simulation results show the LQG controller with the whitening filter obtains a better control performance than that with a Markovian filter in the problem of minimizing the photon numbers of the principal system when the ancillary system is disturbed by thermal noise.

Quantum filter for a class of non-Markovian quantum systems

In this paper we present a Markovian representation approach to constructing quantum filters for a class of non-Markovian quantum systems disturbed by Lorenztian noise. An ancillary system is introduced to convert white noise into Lorentzian noise which is injected into a principal system via a direct interaction. The resulting dynamics of the principal system are non-Markovian, which are driven by the Lorentzian noise. By probing the principal system, a quantum filter for the augmented system can be derived from standard theory, where the conditional state of the principal system can be obtained by tracing out the ancillary system. An example is provided to illustrate the non-Markovian dynamics of the principal system.

Fault Tolerant Quantum Filtering and Fault Detection for Quantum Systems

This paper aims to determine the fault tolerant quantum filter and fault detection equation for a class of open quantum systems coupled to a laser field that is subject to stochastic faults. In order to analyze this class of open quantum systems, we propose a quantum-classical Bayesian inference method based on the definition of a so-called quantum-classical conditional expectation. It is shown that the proposed Bayesian inference approach provides a convenient tool to simultaneously derive the fault tolerant quantum filter and the fault detection equation for this class of open quantum systems. An example of two-level open quantum systems subject to Poisson-type faults is presented to illustrate the proposed method. These results have the potential to lead to a new fault tolerant control theory for quantum systems.

Rapid Lyapunov control of finite-dimensional quantum systems

Rapid state control of quantum systems is significant in reducing the influence of relaxation or decoherence caused by the environment and enhancing the capability in dealing with uncertainties in the model and control process. Bang-bang Lyapunov control can speed up the control process, but cannot guarantee convergence to a target state. This paper proposes two classes of new Lyapunov control methods that can achieve rapidly convergent control for quantum states. One class is switching Lyapunov control where the control law is designed by switching between bang-bang Lyapunov control and standard Lyapunov control. The other class is approximate bang-bang Lyapunov control where we propose two special control functions which are continuously differentiable and yet have a bang-bang type property. Related stability results are given and a construction method for the degrees of freedom in the Lyapunov function is presented to guarantee rapid convergence to a target eigenstate being isolated in the invariant set. Several numerical examples demonstrate that the proposed methods can achieve improved performance for rapid state control of quantum systems.
