A Possible Implementation of a Direct Coupling Coherent Quantum Observer

This paper considers the problem of implementing a previously proposed direct coupling quantum observer for a closed linear quantum system. This observer is shown to be able to estimate some but not all of the plant variables in a time averaged sense. The paper proposes a possible experimental implementation of the observer plant system using a non-degenerate parametric amplifier.

Coherent Robust H-Infinity Control of Uncertain Linear Quantum Stochastic Systems

This paper considers a class of uncertain linear quantum systems subject to uncertain perturbations in the system Hamiltonian. We present a method to design a coherent robust H-infinity controller so that the closed loop system is robustly stable and achieves a prescribed level of disturbance attenuation with all the admissible uncertainties. An illustrative example shows that for the given system, the method presented in this paper has improved performance over the existing quantum H-infinity control results without considering uncertainty.

Decentralized Coherent Quantum Control Design for Translation Invariant Linear Quantum Stochastic Networks with Direct Coupling

This paper is concerned with coherent quantum control design for translation invariant networks of identical quantum stochastic systems subjected to external quantum noise. The network is modelled as an open quantum harmonic oscillator and is governed by a set of linear quantum stochastic differential equations. The dynamic variables of this quantum plant satisfy the canonical commutation relations. Similar large-scale systems can be found, for example, in quantum metamaterials and optical lattices. The problem under consideration is to design a stabilizing decentralized coherent quantum controller in the form of another translation invariant quantum system, directly coupled to the plant, so as to minimize a weighted mean square functional of the dynamic variables of the interconnected networks. We consider this problem in the thermodynamic limit of infinite network size and present first-order necessary conditions for optimality of the controller.

Guaranteed Cost Dynamic Coherent Control for Uncertain Linear Quantum Systems

This paper concerns a class of uncertain linear quantum systems subject to quadratic perturbations in the system Hamiltonian. A small gain approach is used to evaluate the performance of the given quantum system. In order to get improved control performance, we propose two methods to design a coherent controller for the system. One is to formulate a static quantum controller by adding a controller Hamiltonian to the given system, and the other is to build a dynamic quantum controller which is directly coupled to the given system. Both controller design methods are given in terms of LMIs and a non-convex equality. Hence, a rank constrained LMI method is used as a numerical procedure. An illustrative example is given to demonstrate the proposed methods and also to make a performance comparison with different controller design methods. Results show that for the same uncertain quantum system, the dynamic quantum controller can offer an improvement in performance over the static quantum controller.

Quantum filter for a non-Markovian single qubit system

In this paper, a quantum filter for estimating the states of a non-Markovian qubit system is presented in an augmented Markovian system framework including both the qubit system of interest and multi-ancillary systems for representing the internal modes of the non-Markovian environment. The colored noise generated by the multi-ancillary systems disturbs the qubit system via a direct interaction. The resulting non-Markovian dynamics of the qubit is determined by a memory kernel function arising from the dynamics of the ancillary system. In principle, colored noise with arbitrary power spectrum can be generated by a combination of Lorentzian noises. Hence, the quantum filter can be constructed for the qubit disturbed by arbitrary colored noise and the conditional state of the qubit system can be obtained by tracing out the multi-ancillary systems. An illustrative example is given to show the non-Markovian dynamics of the qubit system with Lorentzian noise.

Sampling-based Learning Control for Quantum Systems with Uncertainties

Robust control design for quantum systems has been recognized as a key task in the development of practical quantum technology. In this paper, we present a systematic numerical methodology of sampling-based learning control (SLC) for control design of quantum systems with uncertainties. The SLC method includes two steps of "training" and "testing". In the training step, an augmented system is constructed using artificial samples generated by sampling uncertainty parameters according to a given distribution. A gradient flow based learning algorithm is developed to find the control for the augmented system. In the process of testing, a number of additional samples are tested to evaluate the control performance where these samples are obtained through sampling the uncertainty parameters according to a possible distribution. The SLC method is applied to three significant examples of quantum robust control including state preparation in a three-level quantum system, robust entanglement generation in a two-qubit superconducting circuit and quantum entanglement control in a two-atom system interacting with a quantized field in a cavity. Numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of the SLC approach even when uncertainties are quite large, and show its potential for robust control design of quantum systems.

Forgetting in the Synchronization of Quantum Networks

In this paper, we study the decoherence property of synchronization master equation for networks of qubits interconnected by swapping operators. The network Hamiltonian is assumed to be diagonal with different entries so that it might not be commutative with the swapping operators. We prove a theorem establishing a general condition under which almost complete decohernece is achieved, i.e., all but two of the off-diagonal entries of the network density operator asymptotically tend to zero. This result explicitly shows that quantum dissipation networks tend to forget the information initially encoded when the internal (induced by network Hamiltonian) and external (induced by swapping operators) qubit interactions do not comply with each other.

Robust Adaptive Quantum Phase Estimation

Quantum parameter estimation is central to many fields such as quantum computation, communications and metrology. Optimal estimation theory has been instrumental in achieving the best accuracy in quantum parameter estimation, which is possible when we have very precise knowledge of and control over the model. However, uncertainties in key parameters underlying the system are unavoidable and may impact the quality of the estimate. We show here how quantum optical phase estimation of a squeezed state of light exhibits improvement when using a robust fixed-interval smoother designed with uncertainties explicitly introduced in parameters underlying the phase noise.

Reaching Quantum Consensus with Directed Links: Missing Symmetry and Switching Interactions

In this paper, we study consensus seeking of quantum networks under directed interactions defined by a set of permutation operators among a network of qubits. The state evolution of the quantum network is described by a continuous-time master equation, for which we establish an unconditional convergence result indicating that the network state always converges with the limit determined by the generating subgroup of the permutations making use of the Perron-Frobenius theory. We also give a tight graphical criterion regarding when such limit admits a reduced-state consensus. Further, we provide a clear description to the missing symmetry in the reduced-state consensus from a graphical point of view, where the information-flow hierarchy in quantum permutation operators is characterized by different layers of information-induced graphs. Finally, we investigate quantum synchronization in the presence of network Hamiltonian, study quantum consensus conditions under switching interactions, and present a few numerical examples illustrating the obtained results.

Improved mirror position estimation using resonant quantum smoothing

Quantum parameter estimation, the ability to precisely obtain a classical value in a quantum system, is very important to many key quantum technologies. Many of these technologies rely on an optical probe, either coherent or squeezed states to make a precise measurement of a parameter ultimately limited by quantum mechanics. We use this technique to theoretically model, simulate and validate by experiment the measurement and precise estimation of the position of a cavity mirror. In non-resonant systems, the achieved estimation enhancement from quantum smoothing over optimal filtering has not exceeded a factor two, even when squeezed state probes were used. Using a coherent state probe, we show that using quantum smoothing on a mechanically resonant structure driven by a resonant forcing function can result significantly greater improvement in parameter estimation than with non-resonant systems. In this work, we show that it is possible to achieve a smoothing improvement by a factor in excess of three times over optimal filtering. By using intra-cavity light as the probe we obtain finer precision than has been achieved with the equivalent quantum resources in free-space.

Covariance Dynamics and Entanglement in Translation Invariant Linear Quantum Stochastic Networks

This paper is concerned with a translation invariant network of identical quantum stochastic systems subjected to external quantum noise. Each node of the network is directly coupled to a finite number of its neighbours. This network is modelled as an open quantum harmonic oscillator and is governed by a set of linear quantum stochastic differential equations. The dynamic variables of the network satisfy the canonical commutation relations. Similar large-scale networks can be found, for example, in quantum metamaterials and optical lattices. Using spatial Fourier transform techniques, we obtain a sufficient condition for stability of the network in the case of finite interaction range, and consider a mean square performance index for the stable network in the thermodynamic limit. The Peres-Horodecki-Simon separability criterion is employed in order to obtain sufficient and necessary conditions for quantum entanglement of bipartite systems of nodes of the network in the Gaussian invariant state. The results on stability and entanglement are extended to the infinite chain of the linear quantum systems by letting the number of nodes go to infinity. A numerical example is provided to illustrate the results.

Reaching a Quantum Consensus: Master Equations that Generate Symmetrization and Synchronization

In this paper, we propose and study a master-equation based approach to drive a quantum network with $n$ qubits to a consensus (symmetric) state introduced by Mazzarella et al. The state evolution of the quantum network is described by a Lindblad master equation with the Lindblad terms generated by continuous-time swapping operators, which also introduce an underlying interaction graph. We establish a graphical method that bridges the proposed quantum consensus scheme and classical consensus dynamics by studying an induced graph (with $2^{2n}$ nodes) of the quantum interaction graph (with $n$ qubits). A fundamental connection is then shown that quantum consensus over the quantum graph is equivalent to componentwise classical consensus over the induced graph, which allows various existing works on classical consensus to be applicable to the quantum setting. Some basic scaling and structural properties of the quantum induced graph are established via combinatorial analysis. Necessary and sufficient conditions for exponential and asymptotic quantum consensus are obtained, respectively, for switching quantum interaction graphs. As a quantum analogue of classical synchronization of coupled oscillators, quantum synchronization conditions are also presented, in which the reduced states of all qubits tend to a common trajectory.

The Evolution of Network Entropy in Classical and Quantum Consensus Dynamics

In this paper, we investigate the evolution of the network entropy for consensus dynamics in classical or quantum networks. We show that in the classical case, the network entropy decreases at the consensus limit if the node initial values are i.i.d. Bernoulli random variables, and the network differential entropy is monotonically non-increasing if the node initial values are i.i.d. Gaussian. While for quantum consensus dynamics, the network's von Neumann entropy is in contrast non-decreasing. In light of this inconsistency, we compare several gossiping algorithms with random or deterministic coefficients for classical or quantum networks, and show that quantum gossiping algorithms with deterministic coefficients are physically related to classical gossiping algorithms with random coefficients.

Quantum filtering for multiple diffusive and Poissonian measurements

We provide a rigorous derivation of a quantum filter for the case of multiple measurements being made on a quantum system. We consider a class of measurement processes which are functions of bosonic field operators, including combinations of diffusive and Poissonian processes. This covers the standard cases from quantum optics, where homodyne detection may be described as a diffusive process and photon counting may be described as a Poissonian process. We obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for any pair of such measurements taken at different output channels to satisfy a commutation relationship. Then, we derive a general, multiple measurement quantum filter as an extension of a single-measurement quantum filter. As an application we explicitly obtain the quantum filter corresponding to homodyne detection and photon counting at the output ports of a beam splitter, correcting an earlier result.

Parameterization of Stabilizing Linear Coherent Quantum Controllers

This paper is concerned with application of the classical Youla-Kučera parameterization to finding a set of linear coherent quantum controllers that stabilize a linear quantum plant. The plant and controller are assumed to represent open quantum harmonic oscillators modelled by linear quantum stochastic differential equations. The interconnections between the plant and the controller are assumed to be established through quantum bosonic fields. In this framework, conditions for the stabilization of a given linear quantum plant via linear coherent quantum feedback are addressed using a stable factorization approach. The class of stabilizing quantum controllers is parameterized in the frequency domain. Also, this approach is used in order to formulate coherent quantum weighted $H_2$ and $H_\infty$ control problems for linear quantum systems in the frequency domain. Finally, a projected gradient descent scheme is proposed to solve the coherent quantum weighted $H_2$ control problem.

Robust Mean Square Stability of Open Quantum Stochastic Systems with Hamiltonian Perturbations in a Weyl Quantization Form

This paper is concerned with open quantum systems whose dynamic variables satisfy canonical commutation relations and are governed by quantum stochastic differential equations. The latter are driven by quantum Wiener processes which represent external boson fields. The system-field coupling operators are linear functions of the system variables. The Hamiltonian consists of a nominal quadratic function of the system variables and an uncertain perturbation which is represented in a Weyl quantization form. Assuming that the nominal linear quantum system is stable, we develop sufficient conditions on the perturbation of the Hamiltonian which guarantee robust mean square stability of the perturbed system. Examples are given to illustrate these results for a class of Hamiltonian perturbations in the form of trigonometric polynomials of the system variables.

The proposed observer consists of a network of quantum harmonic oscillators and it is shown that the observer network output converges to a consensus in a time averaged sense in which each component of the observer estimates a specified output of the quantum plant. An example and simulations are included.
