Generalized lattice Wilson-Dirac fermions in (1+1) dimensions for atomic quantum simulation and topological phases

The Dirac fermion is an important fundamental particle appearing in high-energy physics and topological insulator physics. In particular, a Dirac fermion in a one-dimensional lattice system exhibits the essential properties of topological physics. However, the system has not been quantum simulated in experiments yet. Herein, we propose a one-dimensional generalized lattice Wilson-Dirac fermion model and study its topological phase structure. We show the experimental setups of an atomic quantum simulator for the model, in which two parallel optical lattices with the same tilt for trapping cold fermion atoms and a laser-assisted hopping scheme are used. Interestingly, we find that the model exhibits nontrivial topological phases characterized by gapless edge modes and a finite winding number in the broad regime of the parameter space. Some of the phase diagrams closely resemble those of the Haldane model. We also discuss topological charge pumping and a lattice Gross-Neveu model in the system of generalized Wilson-Dirac fermions.

Dynamics of a quantum phase transition in the Bose-Hubbard model: Kibble-Zurek mechanism and beyond

In this paper, we study the dynamics of the Bose-Hubbard model by using time-dependent Gutzwiller methods. In particular, we vary the parameters in the Hamiltonian as a function of time, and investigate the temporal behavior of the system from the Mott insulator to the superfluid (SF) crossing a second-order phase transition. We first solve a time-dependent Schrödinger equation for the experimental setup recently done by Braun et.al. [Proc. Nat. Acad. Sci. 112, 3641 (2015)] and show that the numerical and experimental results are in fairly good agreement. However, these results disagree with the Kibble-Zurek scaling. From our numerical study, we reveal a possible source of the discrepancy. Next, we calculate the critical exponents of the correlation length and vortex density in addition to the SF order parameter for a Kibble-Zurek protocol. We show that beside the "freeze" time $\hat{t}$, there exists another important time, $t_{\rm eq}$, at which an oscillating behavior of the SF amplitude starts. From calculations of the exponents of the correlation length and vortex density with respect to a quench time $\tQ$, we obtain a physical picture of a coarsening process. Finally, we study how the system evolves after the quench. We give a global picture of dynamics of the Bose-Hubbard model.

Various Topological Mott insulators in strongly-interacting boson system in one-dimensional superlattice

In this paper, we study a one-dimensional boson system in a superlattice potential. This system is experimentally feasible by using ultracold atomic gases, and attracts much attention these days. It is expected that the system has a topological phase called topological Mott insulator (TMI). We show that in strongly-interacting cases, the competition between the superlattice potential and the on-site interaction leads to various TMIs with non-vanishing integer Chern number. Compared to hard-core case, the soft-core boson system exhibits rich phase diagrams including various non-trivial TMIs. By using the exact diagonalization,we obtain detailed bulk-global phase diagrams including the TMIs with high Chern numbers and also various non-topological phases. We also show that in adiabatic experimental setups, the strongly-interacting bosonic TMIs exhibit the topological particle transfer, i.e., topological charge pumping phenomenon, similarly to weakly-interacting systems. The various TMIs are characterized by topological charge pumping as it is closely related to the Chern number, and therefor the Chern number is to be observed in feasible experiments.

Quantum simulation of $(1+1)$-dimensional U(1) gauge-Higgs model on a lattice by cold Bose gases

We present a theoretical study of quantum simulations of $(1+1)$-dimensional U(1) lattice gauge-Higgs models, which contain a compact U(1) gauge field and a Higgs matter field, by using ultra-cold bosonic gases on a one-dimensional optical lattice. Starting from the extended Bose-Hubbard model with on-site and nearest-neighbor interactions, we derive the U(1) lattice gauge-Higgs model as a low-energy effective theory. The derived gauge-Higgs model exhibits nontrivial phase transitions between confinement and Higgs phases, and we discuss the relation with the phase transition in the extended Bose-Hubbard model. Finally, we study real-time dynamics of an electric flux by the Gross-Pitaevskii equations and the truncated Wigner approximation. The dynamics is governed by a bosonic analog of the Schwinger mechanism, i.e., shielding of an electric flux by a condensation of Higgs fields, which occurs differently in the Higgs and the confinement phase. These results, together with the obtained phase diagrams, shall guide experimentalists in designing quantum simulations of the gauge-Higgs models by cold gases.

Phase diagrams of the extended Bose-Hubbard model in one dimension by Monte-Carlo simulation with the help of a stochastic-series expansion

In this paper, we study phase diagrams of the extended Bose-Hubbard model (EBHM) in one dimension by means of the quantum Monte-Carlo (QMC) simulation using the stochastic-series expansion (SSE).In the EBHM, there exists a nearest-neighbor repulsion as well as the on-site repulsion. In the SSE-QMC simulation, the highest particle number at each site, $n_c$, is also a controllable parameter, and we found that the phase diagrams depend on the value of $n_c$. It is shown that in addition to the Mott insulator, superfluid, density wave, the phase so-called Haldane insulator and supersolid appear in the phase diagrams, and their locations in the phase diagrams are clarified.

Vortex dynamics in lattice Bose gases in a synthesized magnetic field with a random noise and a dissipation: Study by the stochastic Gross-Pitaevskii equation

In this paper, we investigate vortex dynamics in a two-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model coupled with a weak artificial magnetic field, a random white noise and a dissipation. Origin of the noise and dissipation is considered as thermal fluctuations of atoms that do not participate the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC). Solving a stochastic Gross-Pitaevskii equation to this system, we show that the interplay of the magnetic field and the white noise generates vortices in the bulk of the BEC and stable steady states of vortices form after a transition period. We calculate the incompressible part of the kinetic-energy spectrum of the BEC. In the transition period, a Kolmogorov $k^{-5/3}$ spectrum appears in the infrared regime with the wave number $k$, $k<ζ^{-1}$, where $ζ$ is the healing length, whereas in the ultraviolet region, $k>ζ^{-1}$, the spectrum behaves as $k^{-3}$. On the other hand in the steady states, another scaling low appears. We find a relationship between the above mentioned kinetic-energy spectra and the velocity of vortices. By an inverse cascade, the large velocity of a few created vortices develops the Kolmogorov $k^{-5/3}$ spectrum.

Bosonic Analogs of Fractional Quantum Hall State in the Vicinity of Mott States

In the present paper, the Bose-Hubbard model (BHM) with the nearest-neighbor (NN) repulsions is studied from the view point of possible bosonic analogs of the fractional quantum Hall (FQH) state in the vicinity of the Mott insulator (MI). First, by means of the Gutzwiller approximation, we obtain the phase diagram of the BHM in a magnetic field. Then, we introduce an effective Hamiltonian describing excess particles on a MI and calculate the vortex density, momentum distribution and the energy gap. These calculations indicate that the vortex solid forms for small NN repulsions, but a homogeneous featureless `Bose-metal' takes the place of it as the NN repulsion increases. We consider particular filling factors at which the bosonic FQH state is expected to form. Chern-Simons (CS) gauge theory to the excess particle is introduced, and a modified Gutzwiller wave function, which describes bosons with attached flux quanta, is introduced. The energy of the excess particles in the bosonic FQH state is calculated using that wave function, and it is compared with the energy of the vortex solid and Bose-metal. We found that the energy of the bosonic FQH state is lower than that of the Bose-metal and comparable with the vortex solid. Finally, we clarify the condition that the composite fermion appears by using CS theory on the lattice that we previously proposed for studying the electron FQH effect.

Atomic quantum simulation of a three-dimensional U(1) gauge-Higgs model

In this paper, we study theoretically atomic quantum simulations of a U(1) gauge-Higgs model on a three-dimensional (3D) spatial lattice by using an extended Bose-Hubbard model with intersite repulsions on a 3D optical lattice. Here, the phase and density fluctuations of the boson variable on each site of the optical lattice describe the vector potential and the electric field on each link of the gauge-model lattice, respectively. The target gauge model is different from the standard Wilson-type U(1) gauge-Higgs model because it has plaquette and Higgs interactions with asymmetric couplings in the space-time directions. Nevertheless, the corresponding quantum simulation is still important as it provides us with a platform to study unexplored time-dependent phenomena characteristic of each phase in the general gauge-Higgs models. To determine the phase diagram of the gauge-Higgs model at zero temperature, we perform Monte-Carlo simulations of the corresponding 3+1-dimensional U(1) gauge-Higgs model, and obtain the confinement and Higgs phases. To investigate the dynamical properties of the gauge-Higgs model, we apply the Gross-Pitaevskii equations to the extended Bose-Hubbard model. We simulate the time-evolution of an electric flux that initially is put on a straight line connecting two external point charges. We also calculate the potential energy between this pair of charges and obtain the string tension in the confinement phase. Finally, we propose a feasible experimental setup for the atomic simulations of this quantum gauge-Higgs model on the 3D optical lattice. These results may serve as theoretical guides for future experiments.

Phase diagram of dipolar hard-core bosons on honeycomb lattice

In this paper, we study phase diagrams of dipolar hard-core boson gases on the honeycomb lattice. The system is described by the Haldane-Bose-Hubbard model with complex hopping amplitudes and the nearest neighbor repulsion. By using the slave-particle representation of the hard-core bosons and also the path-integral quantum Monte-Carlo simulations, we investigate the system and to show that the systems have a rich phase diagram. There are Mott, superfluid, chiral superfluid, and sublattice chiral superfluid phases as well as the density-wave phase. We also found that there exists a coexisting phase of superfluid and chiral superfluid. Critical behaviors of the phase transitions are also clarified.

Phase diagrams of Bose-Hubbard model and Haldane-Bose-Hubbard model with complex hopping amplitudes

In this paper, we study Bose-Hubbard models on the square and honeycomb lattices with complex hopping amplitudes, which are feasible by recent experiments of cold atomic gases in optical lattices. To clarify phase diagrams, we use an extended quantum Monte-Carlo simulations (eQMC). For the system on the square lattice, the complex hopping is realized by an artificial magnetic field. We found that vortex-solid states form for certain set of magnetic field, i.e., the magnetic field with the flux quanta per plaquette $f=p/q$, where $p$ and $q$ are co-prime natural numbers. For the system on the honeycomb lattice, we add the next-nearest neighbor complex hopping. The model is a bosonic analog of the Haldane-Hubbard model. By means of the eQMC, we study the model with both weak and strong on-site repulsions. Numerical study shows that the model has a rich phase diagram. We also found that in the system defined on the honeycomb lattice of the cylinder geometry, an interesting edge state appears.

Real time dynamics and proposal for feasible experiments of lattice gauge-Higgs model simulated by cold atoms

Lattice gauge theory has provided a crucial non-perturbative method in studying canonical models in high-energy physics such as quantum chromodynamics. Among other models of lattice gauge theory, the lattice gauge-Higgs model is a quite important one because it describes wide variety of phenomena/models related to the Anderson-Higgs mechanism such as superconductivity, the standard model of particle physics, and inflation process of the early universe. In this paper, we first show that atomic description of the lattice gauge model allows us to explore real time dynamics of the gauge variables by using the Gross-Pitaevskii equations. Numerical simulations of the time development of an electric flux reveal some interesting characteristics of dynamical aspect of the model and determine its phase diagram. Next, to realize a quantum simulator of the U(1) lattice gauge-Higgs model on an optical lattice filled by cold atoms, we propose two feasible methods: (i) Wannier states in the excited bands and (ii) dipolar atoms in a multilayer optical lattice. We pay attentions to respect the constraint of Gauss's law and avoid nonlocal gauge interactions.

Two-component Bose gas trapped by harmonic and annular potentials: Supercurrent, vortex flow and instability of superfluidity by Rabi coupling

In this paper, we study a system of two-component Bose gas in an artificial magnetic field trapped by concentric harmonic and annular potentials, respectively. The system is realized by gases with two-internal states like the hyperfine states of $^{87}$Rb. We are interested in effects of a Rabi oscillation between them. Two-component Bose Hubbard model is introduced to describe the system, and Gross-Pitaevskii equations are used to study the system. We first study the Bose gas system in the annular trap by varying the width of the annulus and strength of the magnetic field, in particular, we focus on the phase slip and superflow. Then we consider the coupled Bose gas system in a magnetic field. In a strong magnetic field, vortices form a Abrikosov triangular lattice in both Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs), and locations of vortices in the BECs correlate with each other by the Rabi coupling. However, as the strength of the Rabi coupling is increased, vortices start to vibrate around their equilibrium locations. As the strength is increased further, vortices in the harmonic trap start to move along the boundaries of the annulus. Finally for a large Rabi coupling, the BECs are destroyed. Based on our findings about the BEC in the annular trap, we discuss the origin of above mentioned phenomena.

Lattice Gauge Theory for Condensed Matter Physics: Ferromagnetic Superconductivity as its Example

Recent theoretical studies of various strongly-correlated systems in condensed matter physics reveal that the lattice gauge theory(LGT) developed in high-energy physics is quite a useful tool to understand physics of these systems. Knowledges of LGT are to become a necessary item even for condensed matter physicists. In the first part of this paper, we present a concise review of LGT for the reader who wants to understand its basics for the first time. For illustration, we choose the abelian Higgs model, a typical and quite useful LGT, which is the lattice verison of the Ginzburg-Landau model interacting with a U(1) gauge field (vector potential). In the second part, we present an account of the recent progress in the study of ferromagnetic superconductivity (SC) as an example of application of LGT to topics in condensed matter physics, . As the ferromagnetism (FM) and SC are competing orders with each other, large fluctuations are expected to take place and therefore nonperturbative methods are required for theoretical investigation. After we introduce a LGT describing the FMSC, we study its phase diagram and topological excitations (vortices of Cooper pairs) by Monte-Carlo simulations.

Random-field-induced order in bosonic t-J model

In the present paper, we shall study effect of a random quenched external field for spin order and also multiple Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC). This system is realized by the cold atomic gases in an optical lattice. In particular, we are interested in the strong-repulsion region of two-component gases for which the bosonic t-J model is a good effective model. In the bosonic t-J model, a long-range order of the pseudo-spin and also BEC of atoms appear quite naturally as in the fermion t-J model for the high-temperature superconducting materials. Random Raman scattering between two internal states of a single atom plays a role of the random external field, and we study its effects on the pseudo-spin order and the BEC by means of quantum Monte-Carlo simulations. The random external field breaks a continuous U(1) symmetry existing in the original bosonic t-J model and it induces new orders named random-field-induced order (RFIO). We show a phase diagram of the bosonic t-J model with the random external magnetic field and study the robustness of the RFIO states. We also study topological excitations like vortices and domain wall in the RFIO state. Finally we point out the possibility of a quantum bit by the RFIO.

Atomic Quantum Simulation of Lattice Gauge-Higgs Model: Higgs Couplings and Emergence of Exact Local Gauge Symmetry

Recently, the possibility of quantum simulation of dynamical gauge fields was pointed out by using a system of cold atoms trapped on each link in an optical lattice. However, to implement exact local gauge invariance, fine-tuning the interaction parameters among atoms is necessary. In the present paper, we study the effect of violation of the U(1) local gauge invariance by relaxing the fine-tuning of the parameters and showing that a wide variety of cold atoms is still to be a faithful quantum simulator for a U(1) gauge-Higgs model containing a Higgs field sitting on sites. Clarification of the dynamics of this gauge-Higgs model sheds some lights upon various unsolved problems including the inflation process of the early universe. We study the phase structure of this model by Monte Carlo simulation, and also discuss the atomic characteristics of the Higgs phase in each simulator.

Bosonic t-J Model in a stacked triangular lattice and its phase diagram

In this paper, we study phase diagram of a system of two-component hard-core bosons with nearest-neighbor (NN) pseudo-spin antiferromagnetic (AF) interactions in a stacked triangular lattice. Hamiltonian of the system contains three parameters one of which is the hopping amplitude $t$ between NN sites, and the other two are the NN pseudo-spin exchange interaction $J$ and the one that measures anisotropy of pseudo-spin interactions. We investigate the system by means of the Monte-Carlo simulations and clarify the low-temperature phase diagram. In particular, we are interested in how the competing orders, i.e., AF order and superfluidity, are realized, and also whether supersolid forms as a result of hole doping into the state of the $\sqrt{3}\times \sqrt{3}$ pseudo-spin pattern with the $120^o$ structure.

Possibility of Exciton Mediated Superconductivity in Nano-Sized Sn/Si Core-Shell Clusters: A Process Technology towards Heterogeneous Material in Nano-Scale

We have produced Sn/Si core-shell cluster assemblies by a plasma-gas-condensation cluster beam deposition apparatus. For the sample with Si content = 12 at.%, the temperature dependence of electrical resistivity exhibits a metallic behavior above 10K and the onset of superconducting transition below 6.1 K. With decreasing temperature, the thermomagnetic curve for the sample with Si content = 8 at.% begins to decrease steadily toward negative value below 7.7 K, indicating the Meissner effect. An increase in the transition temperature, TC is attributable to exciton-typesuperconductivity.

Lattice Ginzburg-Landau Model of a Ferromagnetic p-wave Pairing Phase in Superconducting Materials and an Inhomogeneous Coexisting State

We study the interplay of the ferromagnetic (FM) state and the p-wave superconducting (SC) state observed in several materials such as UCoGe and URhGe in a totally nonperturbative manner. To this end, we introduce a lattice Ginzburg-Landau model that is a genuine generalization of the phenomenological Ginzburg-Landau theory proposed previously in the continuum and also a counterpart of the lattice gauge-Higgs model for the s-wave SC transition, and study it numerically by Monte-Carlo simulations. The obtained phase diagram has qualitatively the same structure as that of UCoGe in the region where the two transition temperatrures satisfy $T_{\rm FM}>T_{\rm SC}$. For $T_{\rm FM}/T_{\rm SC} < 0.7$, we find that the coexisting region of FM and SC orders appears only near the surface of the lattice, which describes an inhomogeneous FMSC coexisting state.
