Crystal, Superfluids, Supersolid and Hetero-Structure in System of Two-Component Strongly-Correlated Bosons in a Cubic Optical Lattice

In the present paper, we study finite-temperature phase structure of two-component hard-core bosons in a cubic optical lattice. The system that we study in the present paper is an effective model for the Bose-Hubbard model with strong on-site repulsions and is called bosonic t-J model. This model is a bosonic counterpart of the t-J model for the strongly-correlated electron systems like the high-temperature superconducting materials. We study the model by means of path-integral methods and Monte-Carlo simulations. We found that this system has a very rich phase structure including checkerboard-type "insulating" state, superfluid, phase-separated state, inhomogeneous cloudlet state, etc. We are also interested in the possible supersolid phase with both the checkerboard order and superfluidity and found that additional nearest-neighbor inter-species attractive force induces the supersolid state. In the supersolid state, paired superfluid appears in addition to the superfluid of single atom. This result gives important insight into mechanism of the high-temperature superconductivity of the cuprate.

Phase Structure of Anisotropic Antiferromagnetic Heisenberg Model on Layered Triangular Lattice: Spiral State and Deconfined Spin Liquid

In the present paper, we study spin-${1 \over 2}$ antiferromagnetic (AF) Heisenberg model on layered anisotropic triangular lattice and obtain its phase structure. We use the Schwinger bosons for representing spin operators and also coherent-state path integral for calculating physical quantities. Finite-temperature properties of the system are investigated by means of the numerical Monte-Carlo simulations. Detailed phase diagram of the system is obtained by calculating internal energy, specific heat, spin correlation functions, etc. There are AF Néel, paramagnetic and spiral states. Turning on plaquette term (i.e., the Maxwell term on a lattice) of an emergent U(1) gauge field that flips a pair of parallel spin-singlet bonds, we found that there appears a phase that is regarded as a deconfined spin-liquid state, though "transition" to this phase from the paramagnetic phase is not of second order but a crossover. In that phase, the emergent gauge boson is a physical gapless excitation coupled with spinons. These results support our previous study on AF Heisenberg model on a triangular lattice at vanishing temperature.

Antiferromagnetic, metal-insulator, and superconducting phase transitions in underdoped cuprates: Slave-fermion t-J model in the hopping expansion

In the present paper, we study a system of doped antiferromagnet in three dimensions at finite temperatures by using the t-J model, a canonical model of strongly-correlated electrons. We employ the slave-fermion representation of electrons in which an electron is described as a composite of a charged spinless holon and a chargeless spinon. We introduce two kinds of U(1) gauge fields on links as auxiliary fields, one describing resonating valence bonds of antiferromagnetic nearest-neighbor spin pairs and the other for nearest-neighbor hopping amplitudes of holons and spinons in the ferromagnetic channel. In order to perform numerical study of the system, we integrate out the fermionic holon field by using the hopping expansion in powers of the hopping amplitude, which is legitimate for the region in and near the insulating phase. The resultant effective model is described in terms of bosonic spinons and the two U(1) gauge fields, and a collective field for hole pairs. We study this model by means of Monte-Carlo simulations, calculating the specific heat, spin correlation functions, and instanton densities. We obtain a phase diagram in the hole concentration-temperature plane, which is in good agreement with that observed recently for clean and homogeneous underdoped samples.

Antiferromagnetic Order and Bose-Einstein Condensation in Strongly-Correlated Cold-Atom Systems: Bosonic t-J Model in the Double-CP^1 Representation

We study the three-dimensional bosonic t-J model, i.e., the t-J model of "bosonic electrons" at finite temperatures. This model describes a system of cold bosonic atoms with two species in an optical lattice. The model is derived from the Hubbard model for very large on-site repulsive interaction between bosons of same species (hard-core nature) and also strong correlations between different species. The operator B_{xσ} for an atom at the site x with a two-component (pseudo-) spin σ(=1,2) is treated as a hard-core boson operator, and represented by a composite of two slave particles; a spinon described by a CP^1 field (Schwinger boson) z_{xσ} and a holon described by a hard-core-boson field ϕ_x as B_{xσ}=ϕ^†_x z_{xσ}. ϕ_x is then expressed by a pseudo-spin, which is, in turn, represented by another CP^1 (pseudo) spinon w_{xη} as ϕ_x = w_{x2}^†w_{x1}. We then have a double-CP^1 representation of the model by z_{xσ} and w_{xη}. By means of Monte Carlo simulations of this bosonic t-J model, we study its phase structure and the possible phenomena like appearance of antiferromagnetic long-range order, Bose-Einstein condensation, phase separation, etc. They should be compared with the possible experimental results of a recently studied boson-boson mixture like ^87Rb and ^41K in an optical lattice.

Effective field theory for Sp(N) antiferromagnets and its phase structure

In this paper, we study quantum Sp(N) antiferromagnetic (AF) Heisenberg models in two dimensions (2D) by using the Schwinger-boson representation and the path-integral methods. An effective field theory, which is an extension of CP^{N-1} model in (2+1)D, is derived and its phase structure is studied by the 1/N-expansion. We introduce a spatial anisotropy in the exchange couplings and show that the effective coupling constant in the CP^{N-1} model is an increasing function of the anisotropy. For the SU(N) AF Heisenberg model, which is a specific case of the Sp(N) model, we found that phase transition from the ordered "Néel state" to paramagnetic phase takes place as the anisotropy is increased. In the vicinity of the SU(N) symmetric point, this phase structure is retained. However as a parameter that controls explicit breaking of the SU(N) symmetry is increased, a new phase, which is similar to the spiral-spin phase with a nematic order in frustrated SU(2) spin systems, appears. It is shown that at that phase transition point, a local SU(2) gauge symmetry with composite SU(2) gauge field appears in the low-energy sector. It is another example of symmetry-enhancement phenomenon at low energies. We also introduce a lattice gauge-theoretical model, which is a counterpart of the effective field theory, and study its phase structure by means of the Monte-Carlo simulations.

Magnetic order, Bose-Einstein condensation, and superfluidity in a bosonic t-J model of CP^1 spinons and doped Higgs holons

We study the three-dimensional U(1) lattice gauge theory of a CP$^1$ spinon (Schwinger boson) field and a Higgs field. It is a bosonic $t$-$J$ model in slave-particle representation, describing the antiferromagnetic (AF) Heisenberg spin model with doped bosonic holes expressed by the Higgs field. The spinon coupling term of the action favors AF long-range order, whereas the holon hopping term in the ferromagnetic channel favors Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of holons. We investigate the phase structure by means of Monte-Carlo simulations and study an interplay of AF order and BEC of holes. We consider the two variations of the model; (i) the three-dimensional model at finite temperatures, and (ii) the two-dimensional model at vanishing temperature. In the model (i) we find that the AF order and BEC coexist at low temperatures and certain hole concentrations. In the model (ii), by varying the hole concentration and the stiffness of AF spin coupling, we find a phase diagram similar to the model (i). Implications of the results to systems of cold atoms and the fermionic $t$-$J$ model of strongly-correlated electrons are discussed.

Effects of disorder on lattice Ginzburg-Landau model of d-wave superconductors and superfluids

We study the effects of quenched disorder on the two-dimensional d-wave superconductors (SC's) at zero temperature by Monte-Carlo simulations. The model is defined on the three-dimesional (3D) lattice and the SC pair field is put on each spatial link as motivated in the resonating-valence-bond theory of the high-$T_{\rm c}$ SC's. For the nonrandom case, the model exhibits a second-order phase transition to a SC state as density of charge carriers is increased. It belongs to the universality class {\it different from} that of the 3D XY model. Quenched disorders (impurities) are introduced both in the hopping amplitude and the plaquette term of pair fields. Then the second-order transition disappears at a critical concentration of quenched disorder, $p_c\simeq 15%$. Implication of the results to cold atomic systems in optical lattices is also discussed.

Four-dimensional CP$^1+$ U(1) lattice gauge theory for 3D antiferromagnets: Phase structure, gauge bosons and spin liquid

In this paper we study the lattice CP$^1$ model in (3+1) dimensions coupled with a dynamical compact U(1) gauge field. This model is an effective field theory of the $s={1 \over 2}$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin model in three spatial dimensions. By means of Monte Carlo simulations, we investigate its phase structure. There exist the Higgs, Coulomb and confinement phases, and the parameter regions of these phases are clarified. We also measure magnetization of O(3) spins, energy gap of spin excitations, and mass of gauge boson. Then we discuss the relationship between these three phases and magnetic properties of the high-$T_{\rm c}$ cuprates, in particular the possibility of deconfined-spinon phase. Effect of dimer-like spin exchange coupling and ring-exchange coupling is also studied.

Quantum critical phenomena of unconventional superconductors: U(1) gauge model of link Cooper pair

In this paper we shall study quantum critical behavior of lattice model of unconventional superconductors (SC) that was proposed in the previous papers. In this model, the Cooper-pair (CP) field is defined on lattice links in order to describe d-wave SC. The CP field can be regarded as a U(1) lattice gauge field, and the SC phase transition takes place as a result of the phase coherence of the CP field. Effects of the long-range Coulomb interactions between the CP's and fluctuations of the electromagnetic field are taken into account. We investigate the phase structure of the model and the critical behavior by means of the Monte Carlo simulations. We find that the parameter, which controls the fluxes (vortices) of the CP, strongly influences the phase structure. In three-dimensional case, the model has rich phase structure. In particular there is a "monopole proliferation" phase transition besides the SC phase transition. Depending on the parameters, this transition exists within the SC phase or takes place simultaneously with the SC transition. This new type of transition is relevant for unconventional SC's with strong spatial three-dimensionality and to be observed by experiments.

Multi-Higgs U(1) Lattice Gauge Theory in Three Dimensions

We study the three-dimensional compact U(1) lattice gauge theory with $N$ Higgs fields numerically. This model is relevant to multi-component superconductors, antiferromagnetic spin systems in easy plane, inflational cosmology, etc. For N=2, the system has a second-order phase transition line $\tilde{c}_1(c_2)$ in the $c_2$(gauge coupling)$-c_1$(Higgs coupling) plane, which separates the confinement phase and the Higgs phase. For N=3, the critical line is separated into two parts; one for $c_2 \alt 2.25$ with first-order transitions, and the other for $c_2 \agt 2.25$ with second-order transitions.

Quantum Phase Transition in Lattice Model of Unconventional Superconductors

In this paper we shall introduce a lattice model of unconventional superconductors (SC) like d-wave SC in order to study quantum phase transition at vanishing temperature ($T$). Finite-$T$ counterpart of the present model was proposed previously with which SC phase transition at finite $T$ was investigated. The present model is a noncompact U(1) lattice-gauge-Higgs model in which the Higgs boson, the Cooper-pair field, is put on lattice links in order to describe d-wave SC. We first derive the model from a microscopic Hamiltonian in the path-integral formalism and then study its phase structure by means of the Monte Carlo simulations. We calculate the specific heat, monopole densities and the magnetic penetration depth (the gauge-boson mass). We verified that the model exhibits a second-order phase transition from normal to SC phases. Behavior of the magnetic penetration depth is compared with that obtained in the previous analytical calculation using XY model in four dimensions. Besides the normal to SC phase transition, we also found that another second-order phase transition takes place within the SC phase in the present model. We discuss physical meaning of that phase transition.

Strong-Coupling Gauge Theory of Nodal Spinons and Antiferromagnetic Phase Transitions

In this paper we shall study a gauge theory of nodal spinons which appears as a low-energy effective theory for antiferromagnetic (AF) Heisenberg models. In most of studies on the nodal spinons given so far, the gauge interaction between spinons was assumed weak and nonperturbative effects like instantons and vortices were ignored. In the present paper, we shall study strong-coupling gauge theory of nodal spinons and reveal its nontrivial phase structure. To this end, we employ recently developed lattice gauge theory techniques for studying finite-temperature and finite-density gauge theory. At low temperature and low spinon-density region, an AF long-range order exists. As temperature and/or density of spinons are increases, a phase transition to nonmagnetic phase takes place. Order of the phase transition is of second (first) order for low (high) density region of spinons. At a quantum critical point at vanishing temperature T=0, abrupt change of spinon density occurs as a function of the chemical potential. Implications of the results to the heavy-fermion materials and the high-$T_c$ cuprates are discussed.

Ginzburg-Landau Theory for Unconventional Superconductors: Noncompact U(1) Lattice Gauge Model Coupled with Link Higgs Field

In this paper, we introduce a Ginzburg-Landau (GL) theory for the extended-$s$ and d-wave superconductors (SC) in granular systems that is defined on a lattice. In contrast to the ordinary Abelian Higgs model (AHM) that is a GL theory for the s-wave SC, Cooper-pair field (Higgs field) is put on links of the lattice in the present model. By means of Monte-Carlo (MC) simulations, we study phase structure, gauge-boson mass (the inverse magnetic penetration depth) and density of instantons. In the ordinary {\em noncomapct} U(1) AHM, there exists a second-order phase transition from the normal to SC states and the gauge-boson mass develops continuously from the phase transition point. In the present gauge system with link Higgs field, on the other hand, phase transition to the SC state is of first order at moderate coupling constants. The gauge-boson mass changes from vanishing to finite values discontinuously at the phase transition points.

Higgs mechanism and superconductivity in U(1) lattice gauge theory with dual gauge fields

We introduce a U(1) lattice gauge theory with dual gauge fields and study its phase structure. This system is motivated by unconventional superconductors like extended s-wave and d-wave superconductors in the strongly-correlated electron systems. In this theory, the "Cooper-pair" field is put on links of a cubic lattice due to strong on-site repulsion between electrons in contrast to the ordinary s-wave Cooper-pair field on sites. This Cooper-pair field behaves as a gauge field dual to the electromagnetic U(1) gauge field. By Monte Carlo simulations we study this lattice gauge model and find a first-order phase transition from the normal state to the Higgs (superconducting) state. Each gauge field works as a Higgs field for the other gauge field. This mechanism requires no scalar fields in contrast to the ordinary Higgs mechanism.

Three Phases in the 3D Abelian Higgs Model with Nonlocal Gauge Interactions

We study the phase structure of the 3D nonlocal compact U(1) lattice gauge theory coupled with a Higgs field by means of Monte-Carlo simulations. The nonlocal interactions among gauge variables are along the temporal direction and mimic the effect of local coupling to massless particles. We found that in contrast to the 3D local abelian Higgs model which has only one phase, the present model exhibits the confinement, Higgs, and Coulomb phases separated by three second-order transition lines emanating from a triple point. This result is quite important for studies on electron fractionalization phenomena in strongly-correlated electron systems. Implications to them are discussed.

Deconfinement of Spinons on Critical Points: Multi-Flavor CP$^1$ + U(1) Lattice Gauge Theory in Three Dimensions

In this paper, we study the 3D $N_{\rm f}$-flavor CP$^1$ model (a set of $N_{\rm f}$ CP$^1$ variables) coupled with a dynamical compact U(1) gauge field by means of Monte-Carlo simulations. This model is relevant to 2D $s=1/2$ quantum spin models, and has a phase transition line which separates an ordered phase of global spin symmetry from a disordered one. From gauge theoretical point of view, the ordered phase is a Higgs phase whereas the disordered phase is a confinement phase. We are interested in the gauge dynamics just on the critical line, in particular, whether a Coulomb-like deconfinement phase is realized there. This problem is quite important to clarify low-energy excitations in certain class of quantum spin models. If the gauge dynamics is in the deconfinement phase there, spinons, which transform in the fundamental representation of the SU($N_{\rm f}$) symmetry, appear as low-energy excitations. By Monte-Carlo simulations, we found that the "phase structure" on the {\em criticality} strongly depends on the value of $N_{\rm f}$. For small $N_{\rm f}$, the confinement phase is realized, whereas the deconfinement phase appears for sufficient large $N_{\rm f}\ge 14$. This result strongly suggests that compact QED$_3$ is in a deconfinement phase for sufficiently large number of flavors of massless fermions.

Phase Structure of a 3D Nonlocal U(1) Gauge Theory: Deconfinement by Gapless Matter Fields

In this paper, we study a 3D compact U(1) lattice gauge theory with a variety of nonlocal interactions that simulates the effects of gapless/gapful matter fields. This theory is quite important to investigate the phase structures of QED$_3$ and strongly-correlated electron systems like the 2D quantum spin models, the fractional quantum Hall effect, the t-J model of high-temperature superconductivity. We restrict the nonlocal interactions among gauge variables only to those along the temporal direction and adjust their coupling constants optimally to simulate the isotropic nonlocal couplings of the original models. We perform numerical studies of the model to find that, for a certain class of power-decaying couplings, there appears a second-order phase transition to the deconfinement phase as the gauge coupling constant is decreased. On the other hand, for the exponentially-decaying coupling, there are no signals for second-order phase transition. These results indicate the possibility that introduction of sufficient number of massless matter fields destabilizes the permanent confinement in the 3D compact U(1) pure gauge theory due to instantons.

CP^1+U(1) Lattice Gauge Theory in Three Dimensions: Phase Structure, Spins, Gauge Bosons, and Instantons

In this paper we study a 3D lattice spin model of CP$^1$ Schwinger-bosons coupled with dynamical compact U(1) gauge bosons. The model contains two parameters; the gauge coupling and the hopping parameter of CP$^1$ bosons. At large (weak) gauge couplings, the model reduces to the classical O(3) (O(4)) spin model with long-range and/or multi-spin interactions. It is also closely related to the recently proposed "Ginzburg-Landau" theory for quantum phase transitions of $s=1/2$ quantum spin systems on a 2D square lattice at zero temperature. We numerically study the phase structure of the model by calculating specific heat, spin correlations, instanton density, and gauge-boson mass. The model has two phases separated by a critical line of second-order phase transition; O(3) spin-ordered phase and spin-disordered phase. The spin-ordered phase is the Higgs phase of U(1) gauge dynamics, whereas the disordered phase is the confinement phase. We find a crossover in the confinement phase which separates dense and dilute regions of instantons. On the critical line, spin excitations are gapless, but the gauge-boson mass is {\it nonvanishing}. This indicates that a confinement phase is realized on the critical line. To confirm this point, we also study the noncompact version of the model. A possible realization of a deconfinement phase on the criticality is discussed for the CP$^N$+U(1) model with larger $N$.
