Interplay of Kondo Physics with Incommensurate Charge Density Waves in CeTe$_3$

CeTe$_3$ is a 2--dimensional (2D) Van der Waals (VdW) material with incommensurate charge density waves (CDW), extremely high transition temperature ($T_{CDW}$) and a large momentum--dependent CDW gap that leaves a significant portion of the Fermi surface intact. It is also considered to be a weak Kondo system, a property unexpected for a material with incommensurate CDW, where each atomic site is slightly different. Here, we study the properties of the CDW state in several RTe$_3$ (R is rare earth) materials and examine the hybridization of itinerant states with the localized Ce $4f$ multiplet in CeTe$_3$ by using angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). We find that the renormalization of the itinerant states originating from the hybridization with the deeper localized $4f$ states at $-260$ meV is $k-$dependent and extends to the Fermi level. As these localized states are far from the Fermi level, the observed hybridization affects the effective masses only marginally and does not lead to heavy fermions. However, since the same renormalizing mechanism normally leads to the heavy fermion physics when the localized $4f$ states are near the Fermi level, our observation of its strong $k-$dependence suggests that this could be the reason for discrepancy between the heavy masses in specific heat and light ones in Shubnikov de Haas oscillations, often observed in heavy fermions.

Prediction and observation of the first antiferromagnetic topological insulator

Magnetic topological insulators (MTIs) are narrow gap semiconductor materials that combine non-trivial band topology and magnetic order. Unlike their nonmagnetic counterparts, MTIs may have some of the surfaces gapped due to breaking the time-reversal symmetry, which enables a number of exotic phenomena having potential applications in spintronics. So far, MTIs have only been created by means of doping nonmagnetic TIs with 3d transition metal elements, however, such an approach leads to strongly inhomogeneous magnetic and electronic properties of these materials, restricting the observation of important effects to very low temperatures. Finding intrinsic MTI, i.e. a stoichiometric well-ordered magnetic compound, could be an ideal solution to these problems, but no such material was observed to date. Here, using density functional theory we predict and further confirm by means of structural, transport, magnetic, angle- and spin-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements the realization of the antiferromagnetic (AFM) TI phase, that is hosted by the van der Waals layered compound MnBi$_2$Te$_4$. An interlayer AFM ordering makes MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ invariant with respect to the combination of the time-reversal ($Θ$) and primitive-lattice translation ($T_{1/2}$) symmetries, $S = ΘT_{1/2}$, giving rise to the $Z_2$ topological classification of AFM insulators. We find $Z_2 = 1$ for MnBi$_2$Te$_4$, which confirms its topologically nontrivial nature. The $S$-breaking (0001) surface of MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ exhibits a giant bandgap in the topological surface state as evidenced by ab initio calculations and photoemission measurements. These results culminate almost a decade-long search of an AFMTI, predicted in 2010. Furthermore, MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ is the first intrinsic magnetic TI realized experimentally.

Growth of bulk crystals of magnetic topological insulators under peritectic conditions

Magnetic topological materials (MTIs) including MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ are of scientific interest due to the possibility to reveal the interplay between topological and magnetic orders. For these materials preparation issues are still challenging. In our paper we report new synthetic protocol using two-phase source in Bridgman-like growth procedure. We applied it to grow a number of TIs of GeAs$_2$Te$_4$ structural type including individual compounds MnBi$_2$Te$_4$, MnSb$_2$Te$_4$, GeBi$_2$Te$_4$, SnBi$_2$Te$_4$, PbBi$_2$Te$_4$ and several mixed crystals of whole range of compositions: Mn(Bi,Sb)$_2$Te$_4$, (Ge,Mn)Bi$_2$Te$_4$, new materials Mn(Bi,In)$_2$Te$_4$. The method developed can be used to obtain single crystals of any incongruently melted compounds with small region of primary crystallization from melt in the corresponding equilibrium phase diagrams.

Charge Density Waves and the Effects of Uniaxial Strain on the Electronic Structure of 2H-NbSe$_2$

Interplay of superconductivity and density wave orders has been at the forefront of research of correlated electronic phases for a long time. 2H-NbSe$_2$ is considered to be a prototype system for studying this interplay, where the balance between the two orders was proven to be sensitive to band filling and pressure. However, the origin of charge density wave in this material is still unresolved. Here, by using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we revisit the charge density wave order and study the effects of uniaxial strain on the electronic structure of 2H-NbSe$_2$. Our results indicate previously undetected signatures of charge density waves on the Fermi surface. The application of small amount of uniaxial strain induces substantial changes in the electronic structure and lowers its symmetry. This, and the altered lattice should affect both the charge density wave phase and superconductivity and should be observable in the macroscopic properties.
