Non-equilibrium quantum plasmonics in nanoparticle-on-mirror nanocavities

We develop a novel approach to ultrafast optical modulation of quantum-mechanical phenomena at the interface of plasmonic metals. Focusing on efficient and versatile nanoparticle-on-mirror plasmonic nanocavities, we discuss indirect control of plasmonic properties through laser-induced ballistic hot electron injection. Overcoming the limitations precluding the observations of laser-driven mesoscopic phenomena in the time domain with state-of-the-art amplified sources, our proposed experimental approach can be readily realized without irreversible optical damage and holds immense potential for the future development of ultrafast electrodynamics in nanogaps, applications in photochemistry and nanoscale control of quantum emitters. Agreeing with the results of numerical simulations, an intuitive microscopic model for the proposed time-dependent mesoscopic electrodynamics facilitates the analysis of the temperature-induced modulation of quantum plasmonic properties in a broad parameter space. Our work expands the realm of quantum nanophotonics onto non-equilibrium electronic systems and facilitates the development of ultrafast methods in active plasmonics.

Electron hopping induced phonon pumping in opto-mechanical molecular nanocavities

Plasmonic molecular nanojunctions exhibit opto-mechanical coupling at the nanoscale, enabling intertwined optical, vibrational and electronic phenomena. Here, we demonstrate plasmon-mediated phonon pumping, driven by inelastic electron hopping in conductive molecules, which results in strong Raman nonlinearity at the light intensities almost three orders of magnitude lower than in the conventional opto-mechanical systems and up to four-fold enhancement of the effective Raman polarizability due to vibrational electron-phonon coupling, as confirmed by the significant increase in anti-Stokes Raman scattering intensity, indicating enhanced vibrational occupancy. We also developed a microscopic framework of opto-mechanical electron-phonon coupling in molecular nanojunctions based on the Marcus electron hopping. Systematically varying electrical conductance of the molecules in the junction and laser intensity, we observed the transition between a photo-assisted tunneling regime and an electron hopping process. Our findings provide a microscopic description for vibrational, optical, and electronic phenomena in plasmonic nanocavities important for efficient phonon lasing, representing the first attempt to exploit conductive molecules as quantum-mechanical oscillators.

THz Control of Exchange Mode in a Ferrimagnetic Cavity

The interaction of terahertz (THz) radiation with high-frequency spin resonances in complex magnetic materials is central for modern ultrafast magnonics. Here we demonstrate strong variations of the excitation efficiency of the sub-THz exchange magnon in a single crystal ferrimagnet (Gd,Bi)$_3$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$. An enhancement of the exchange magnon amplitude is observed when its frequency matches an eigenmode of the cavity created by the sample interfaces. Moreover, this enhancement is accompanied by a 5-fold decrease in effective damping of the exchange mode. The THz-exchange magnon interaction in the cavity is analyzed within the developed Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert formalism for three coupled magnetization sublattices and cavity-enhanced THz field. This work presents a novel approach for the THz excitation of spin dynamics in ferrimagnets and outlines promising pathways for the controlled optimization of light-spin coupling in single crystals.

Ultrafast Laser-Induced Dynamics of Non-Equilibrium Electron Spill-Out in Nanoplasmonic Bilayers

Contemporary quantum plasmonics capture subtle corrections to the properties of plasmonic nano-objects in equilibrium. Here, we demonstrate nonequilibrium spill-out redistribution of the electronic density at the ultrafast time scale. As revealed by time-resolved 2D spectroscopy of nanoplasmonic Fe/Au bilayers, an injection of the laser-excited non-thermal electrons induces transient electron spill-out thus changing the plasma frequency. The response of the local electronic density switches the electronic density behavior from spill-in to strong (an order of magnitude larger) spill-out at the femtosecond time scale. The superdiffusive transport of hot electrons and the lack of a direct laser heating indicate significantly non-thermal origin of the underlying physics. Our results demonstrate an ultrafast and non-thermal way to control surface plasmon dispersion through transient variations of the spatial electron distribution at the nanoscale. These findings expand quantum plasmonics into previously unexplored directions by introducing ultrashort time scales in the non-equilibrium electronic systems.

Effective exchange interaction for terahertz spin waves in iron layers

The exchange stiffness is a central material parameter of all ferromagnetic materials. Its value controls the Curie temperature as well as the dynamic properties of spin waves to a large extend. Using ultrashort spin current pulses we excite perpendicular standing spin waves (PSSW) in ultrathin epitaxial iron layers at frequencies of up to 2.4 THz. Our analysis shows that for the PSSWs the observed exchange stiffness of iron is about 20% smaller compared to the established iron bulk value. In addition, we find an interface-related reduction of the effective exchange stiffness for layers with the thickness below 10 nm. To understand and discuss the possible mechanisms of the exchange stiffness reduction we develop an analytical 1D-model. In doing so we find that the interface induced reduction of the exchange stiffness is mode-dependent.

Surface plasmon-enhanced photo-magnetic excitation of spin dynamics in Au/YIG:Co magneto-plasmonic crystals

We report strong amplification of photo-magnetic spin precession in Co-doped YIG employing a surface plasmon excitation in a metal-dielectric magneto-plasmonic crystal. Plasmonic enhancement is accompanied by the localization of the excitation within the 300~nm-thick layer inside the transparent dielectric garnet. Experimental results are nicely reproduced by numerical simulations of the photo-magnetic excitation. Our findings demonstrate the magneto-plasmonic concept of subwavelength localization and amplification of the photo-magnetic excitation in dielectric YIG:Co and open up a path to all-optical magnetization switching below diffraction limit with energy efficiency approaching the fundamental limit for magnetic memories.

Giant Magneto-refractive Effect in Second Harmonic Generation from Plasmonic Antennas in the Mid-infrared

Metallic nanostructures exhibit strong nonlinear-optical response at surface plasmon resonances, where the light-matter coupling efficiency is enhanced. An active modulation of this response can be realized by means of an external magnetic field. Here we utilize a nonlinear magneto-refractive effect in spintronic multilayer antennas to achieve a resonant 20\% modulation in second harmonic generation (SHG) in the mid-infrared. We discuss mechanisms of this modulation and show that it cannot be explained by an unequal enhancement of the electromagnetic field in the two spin states of the multilayer. Instead, we propose a novel contribution to the nonlinear susceptibility, which relies on the spin-dependent electron mean free path in metals. In contrast to magneto-optics in ferromagnets, our approach results in no shift of the resonance and thus ensures that the largest SHG and its strongest modulation are simultaneously observed.

Nanoscale magnetophotonics

This Perspective surveys the state-of-the-art and future prospects of science and technology employing the nanoconfined light (nanophotonics and nanoplasmonics) in combination with magnetism. We denote this field broadly as nanoscale magnetophotonics. We include a general introduction to the field and describe the emerging magneto-optical effects in magnetoplasmonic and magnetophotonic nanostructures supporting localized and propagating plasmons. Special attention is given to magnetoplasmonic crystals with transverse magnetization and the associated nanophotonic non-reciprocal effects, and to magneto-optical effects in periodic arrays of nanostructures. We give also an overview of the applications of these systems in biological and chemical sensing, as well as in light polarization and phase control. We further review the area of nonlinear magnetophotonics, the semiconductor spin-plasmonics, and the general principles and applications of opto-magnetism and nano-optical ultrafast control of magnetism and spintronics.

Second Harmonic Generation from Phononic Epsilon-Near-Zero Berreman Modes in Ultrathin Polar Crystal Films

Immense optical field enhancement was predicted to occur for the Berreman mode in ultrathin films at frequencies in the vicinity of epsilon near zero (ENZ). Here, we report the first experimental proof of this prediction in the mid-infrared by probing the resonantly enhanced second harmonic generation (SHG) at the longitudinal optic phonon frequency from a deeply subwavelength-thin aluminum nitride (AlN) film. Employing a transfer matrix formalism, we show that the field enhancement is completely localized inside the AlN layer, revealing that the observed SHG signal of the Berreman mode is solely generated in the AlN film. Our results demonstrate that ENZ Berreman modes in intrinsically low-loss polar dielectric crystals constitute a promising platform for nonlinear nanophotonic applications.

Ultrafast transport and relaxation of hot plasmonic electrons in metal-dielectric heterostructures

We analyze ultrafast electron dynamics in the time domain upon optical excitation of propagating surface plasmon-polaritons (SPs) in metal-dielectric heterostructures. Developing a kinetic model where both local and non-local electron relaxation in metals are included, we identify relevant timescales and extend the existing non-equilibrium electron dynamics framework onto the case of collective electronic excitations. The experimental data obtained in two distinct series of pump-probe measurements (with varied pump wavelength and angle of incidence) demonstrate SP-driven, one order of magnitude enhanced efficiency of the hot electron generation and the fourfold (up to 200 fs) slowdown of their non-local relaxation at the SP resonance. We discuss the perspectives of the SP-enabled manipulation of the non-equilibrium electron population lying at the crossover of photonics and ultrafast spintronics.

Strong Coupling of Epsilon-Near-Zero Phonon Polaritons in Polar Dielectric Heterostructures

We report the first observation of epsilon near zero (ENZ) phonon polaritons in an ultrathin AlN film fully hybridized with surface phonon polaritons (SPhP) supported by the adjacent SiC substrate. Employing a strong coupling model for the analysis of the dispersion and electric field distribution in these hybridized modes, we show that they share the most prominent features of the two precursor modes. The novel ENZ-SPhP coupled polaritons with a highly propagative character and deeply sub-wavelength light confinement can be utilized as building blocks for future infrared and terahertz (THz) nanophotonic integration and communication devices.

Observation of the nonlinear Wood's anomaly on periodic arrays of nickel nanodimers

Linear and nonlinear magneto-photonic properties of periodic arrays of nickel nanodimers are governed by the interplay of the (local) optical response of individual nanoparticles and (non-local) diffraction phenomena, with a striking example of Wood's anomaly. Angular and magnetic-field dependencies of the second harmonic intensity evidence Wood's anomaly when new diffraction orders emerge. Near-infrared spectroscopic measurements performed at different optical wavelengths and grating constants discriminate between the linear and nonlinear excitation mechanisms of Wood's anomalies. In the nonlinear regime the Wood's anomaly is characterized by an order-of-magnitude larger effect in intensity redistribution between the diffracted beams, as compared to the linear case. The nonlinear Wood's anomaly manifests itself also in the nonlinear magnetic contrast highlighting the prospects of nonlinear magneto-photonics.

Second harmonic generation from strongly coupled localized and propagating phonon-polariton modes

We experimentally investigate second harmonic generation from strongly coupled localized and propagative phonon polariton modes in arrays of silicon carbide nanopillars. Our results clearly demonstrate the hybrid nature of the system's eigenmodes and distinct manifestation of strong coupling in the linear and nonlinear response. While in linear reflectivity the intensity of the two strongly-coupled branches is essentially symmetric and well explained by their respective localized or propagative components, the second harmonic signal presents a strong asymmetry. Analyzing it in detail, we reveal the importance of interference effects between the nonlinear polarization terms originating in the bulk and in the phonon polariton modes, respectively.

Controlling the Infrared Dielectric Function through Atomic-Scale Heterostructures

Surface phonon polaritons (SPhPs) - the surface-bound electromagnetic modes of a polar material resulting from the coupling of light with optic phonons - offer immense technological opportunities for nanophotonics in the infrared (IR) spectral region. Here, we present a novel approach to overcome the major limitation of SPhPs, namely the narrow, material-specific spectral range where SPhPs can be supported, called the Reststrahlen band. We use an atomic-scale superlattice (SL) of two polar semiconductors, GaN and AlN, to create a hybrid material featuring layer thickness-tunable optic phonon modes. As the IR dielectric function is governed by the optic phonon behavior, such control provides a means to create a new dielectric function distinct from either constituent material and to tune the range over which SPhPs can be supported. This work offers the first glimpse of the guiding principles governing the degree to which the dielectric function can be designed using this approach.

Micromagnetic view on ultrafast magnon generation by femtosecond spin current pulses

In this Article we discuss a micromagnetic modelling approach to describe the ultrafast spin-transfer torque excitation of coherent and incoherent magnons on the nanoscale. Implementing the action of a femtosecond spin current pulse entering an orthogonally magnetized thin ferromagnetic film, we reproduce recent experimental results and reveal the factors responsible for the unequal excitation efficiency of various spin waves. Our findings are in an excellent agreement with the results of an analytical description of spin-wave excitation based on classical kinetic equations. Furthermore, we suggest an experimental design allowing for the excitation of laterally propagating spin waves beyond the optical diffraction limit. Our findings demonstrate that the classical micromagnetic picture retains its predictive and interpretative power on femtosecond temporal and nanometer spatial scales.

Surface plasmon-mediated nanoscale localization of laser-driven sub-THz spin dynamics in magnetic dielectrics

Ultrafast all-optical control of spins with femtosecond laser pulses is one of the hot topics at the crossroads of photonics and magnetism with a direct impact on future magnetic recording. Unveiling light-assisted recording mechanisms for an increase of the bit density beyond the diffraction limit without excessive heating of the recording medium is an open challenge. Here we show that surface plasmon-polaritons in hybrid metal-dielectric structures can provide spatial confinement of the inverse Faraday effect, mediating the excitation of localized coherent spin precession with 0.41 THz frequency. We demonstrate a two orders of magnitude enhancement of the excitation efficiency at the surface plasmon resonance within the 100 nm layer in dielectric garnet. Our findings broaden the horizons of ultrafast spin-plasmonics and open pathways towards non-thermal opto-magnetic recording at the nano-scale.

Second Harmonic Generation from Critically Coupled Surface Phonon Polaritons

Mid-infrared nanophotonics can be realized using sub-diffractional light localization and field enhancement with surface phonon polaritons in polar dielectric materials. We experimentally demonstrate second harmonic generation due to the optical field enhancement from critically coupled surface phonon polaritons at the 6H-SiC-air interface, employing an infrared free-electron laser for intense, tunable, and narrowband mid-infrared excitation. Critical coupling to the surface polaritons is achieved using a prism in the Otto geometry with adjustable width of the air gap, providing full control over the excitation conditions along the polariton dispersion. The calculated reflectivity and second harmonic spectra reproduce the full experimental data set with high accuracy, allowing for a quantification of the optical field enhancement. We also reveal the mechanism for low out-coupling efficiency of the second harmonic light in the Otto geometry. Perspectives on surface phonon polariton-based nonlinear sensing and nonlinear waveguide coupling are discussed.

Femtosecond spin current pulses generated by the non-thermal spin-dependent Seebeck effect and interacting with ferromagnets in spin valves

Using the sensitivity of magneto-induced second harmonic generation to spin currents (SC), we demonstrate in Fe/Au/Fe/MgO(001) pseudo spin valves the generation of 250 fs-long SC pulses. Their temporal profile indicates that superdiffusive hot electron transport across a sub-100~nm Au layer is close to the ballistic limit and the pulse duration is primarily determined by the thermalization time of laser-excited hot carriers in Fe. Considering the calculated spin-dependent Fe/Au interface transmittance we conclude that a non-thermal spin-dependent Seebeck effect is responsible for the generation of ultrashort SC pulses. We also show that hot electron spins rotate upon interaction with non-collinear magnetization at the Au/Fe interface, which holds high potential for future spintronic devices.
