Successive Electronic Topological Transitions in the Antiferromagnet UPd$_2$Al$_3$

We report successive anomalies at low temperature in the magnetic field dependence of the thermoelectric signal in the heavy fermion compound UPd$_{2}$Al$_{3}$ inside the antiferromagnetic state up to the metamagnetic transition at $H_\text{M} =18$~T. Based on renormalisation perturbation theory and the partitioning of the $f$ orbitals into localized and delocalized parts, our analysis attributes these anomalies to complex topological changes of the Fermi surface driven by Zeeman effect. The observation of a sudden change of sign both in the thermoelectric power and in the Hall coefficient at $H_\text{M}$ in addition to the appearance of large quantum oscillations in the thermoelectric power above $H_\text{M}$ indicate a strong Fermi surface reconstruction at the metamagnetic transition due to the unfolding of the electronic bands.

Unusual upper critical field in UTe2 revealed by magnetotransport measurements up to 42 T

The heavy-fermion superconductor UTe2 is unique in that, at ambient pressure, it exhibits three distinct superconducting phases, two of which are induced by magnetic field. When the field is applied along the crystallographic b axis in the orthorhombic structure, the field-induced phase SC2 develops above approximately 20 T and persists up to the metamagnetic transition at Hm about 34 T. When the magnetic field is tilted towards the c axis, another superconducting phase, SC3, emerges at very high fields above about 40 T over a certain angular range. The origin of this exotic phase remains under debate. One of the key open questions regarding the origin of SC3 is whether it is confined to the spin-polarized state above Hm, or whether it already develops at lower fields. Here, we report magnetoresistance measurements performed on a high-quality single crystal of UTe2 in static magnetic fields up to 42 T applied in the (bc) plane at temperatures down to 0.35 K. At this temperature, we find that the SC3 phase first appears at an angle of 20 deg from the b axis. At larger angles, the onset of the SC3 phase, defined by a maximum in resistivity, occurs below Hm. However, zero resistivity is reached only above Hm throughout the entire angular range investigated. These results are summarized in the resulting field-angle phase diagram. Furthermore, we find that at 21 deg the SC3 phase is rapidly suppressed with increasing temperature, whereas at 24 deg it becomes considerably more robust and persists up to about 1 K. Finally, we observe Shubnikov de Haas (SdH) oscillations in the vicinity of the c axis. The observed oscillation frequencies are in good agreement with our previous results. The field dependence of the strongest SdH frequency and of the effective mass is discussed.

Fermi surface and magnetic breakdown in PdGa

We study the electronic structure of the chiral semimetal PdGa by means of the de Haas-van Alphen and Shubnikov-de Haas effect. We find that the Fermi surface of PdGa comprises multiple pockets split by spin-orbit coupling. We compare our experimental findings with the band structure calculated ab initio. We demonstrate that the quantum oscillation spectra can be fully understood by considering nodal plane degeneracies at the Brillouin zone boundary and magnetic breakdown between individual Fermi surface pockets. Expanding traditional analysis methods, we explicitly calculate magnetic breakdown frequencies and cyclotron masses while taking into account that extremal breakdown trajectories may reside away from the planes of the single-band orbits. We further analyze high-frequency contributions arising from breakdown trajectories involving multiple revolutions around the Fermi surface which are distinct from conventional harmonic frequencies. Our results highlight the existence of gaps induced by spin-orbit coupling throughout the band structure of PdGa, the relevance of nodal planes on the Brillouin zone boundary, and the necessity for a comprehensive analysis of magnetic breakdown.

High Field Superconducting Phases of Ultra Clean Single Crystal UTe2

We report the magnetoresistance of high-quality single crystals of UTe2 with Tc=2.1K in high magnetic fields up to 36T, with the field direction between the b and c-axes. From the angular dependence of the upper critical field Hc2, we found that the field-reentrant superconducting phase near H // b-axis extends up to a field angle (24 deg) from the b to c-axis, where another field-reentrant superconducting phase begins to appear above the metamagnetic transition field, Hm. Our results suggest that the field-reentrant superconductivity below Hm near the b-axis is closely related to the superconductivity above Hm when the field is tilted toward the c-axis. Superconductivity appears to be robust when the field direction is maintained perpendicular to the magnetization easy axis, implying that fluctuations boosting superconductivity may persist. At first glance, these findings resemble the field-reentrant (reinforced) superconductivity observed in ferromagnetic superconductors URhGe and UCoGe, where Ising-type ferromagnetic fluctuations play a crucial role. However, in UTe2, the fluctuations are more complex. The angular dependence of the upper critical field Hc2 contrasts with that of the initial slope of Hc2 near Tc, revealing the anisotropic field response of fluctuations. Thanks to the high-quality samples, quantum oscillations were detected for field directions close to the c-axis using magnetoresistance (Shubnikov-de Haas effect) and torque (de Haas-van Alphen effect) measurements. The angular dependence of frequencies is in good agreement with those observed previously using the field-modulation technique, confirming quasi-two-dimensional Fermi surfaces.

Fermi surface of the chiral topological semimetal CoSi

We report a study of the Fermi surface of the chiral semimetal CoSi and its relationship to a network of multifold topological crossing points,Weyl points, and topological nodal planes in the electronic band structure. Combining quantum oscillations in the Hall resistivity, magnetization, and torque magnetization with ab initio electronic structure calculations, we identify two groups of Fermi-surface sheets, one centered at the R point and the other centered at the $Γ$ point. The presence of topological nodal planes at the Brillouin zone boundary enforces topological protectorates on the Fermi-surface sheets centered at the R point. In addition, Weyl points exist close to the Fermi-surface sheets centered at the R and the $Γ$ points. In contrast, topological crossing points at the R point and the $Γ$ point, which have been advertised to feature exceptionally large Chern numbers, are located at a larger distance to the Fermi level. Representing a unique example in which the multitude of topological band crossings has been shown to form a complex network, our observations in CoSi highlight the need for detailed numerical calculations of the Berry curvature at the Fermi level, regardless of the putative existence and the possible character of topological band crossings in the band structure.

Field-induced compensation of magnetic exchange as the possible origin of reentrant superconductivity in UTe$_2$

The potential spin-triplet heavy-fermion superconductor UTe$_2$ exhibits signatures of multiple distinct superconducting phases. For field aligned along the $b$ axis, a metamagnetic transition occurs at $μ_0 H_\mathrm{m}\approx35\,$T. It is associated with magnetic fluctuations that may be beneficial for the field-reinforced superconductivity surviving up to $H_\mathrm{m}$. Once the field is tilted away from the $b$ towards the $c$ axis, a reentrant superconducting phase emerges just above $H_\mathrm{m}$. In order to better understand this remarkably field-resistant superconducting phase, we conducted magnetic-torque and magnetotransport measurements in pulsed magnetic fields. We determine the record-breaking upper critical field of $μ_0 H_\mathrm{c2}\approx 73\,$T and its evolution with angle. Furthermore, the normal-state Hall effect experiences a drastic suppression indicative of a reduced band polarization above $H_\mathrm{m}$ in the angular range around $30^\circ$ caused by a partial compensation between the applied field and an exchange field. This promotes the Jaccarino-Peter effect as a likely mechanism for the reentrant superconductivity above $H_\mathrm{m}$.

de Haas-van Alphen Oscillations for the Field Along c-axis in UTe2

We performed de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) experiments in the spin-triplet superconductor UTe2 for magnetic field along the c-axis above 15T. Three fundamental dHvA frequencies, named alpha1, alpha2 and beta corresponding to the cross sections of cylindrical Fermi surfaces (FSs) with large cyclotron effective masses (33-43 m0) were detected. No other fundamental dHvA frequencies were detected at high frequency range, suggesting a cylindrical-shaped electron FS without connecting at the Z point of the Brillouin zone. However, the existence of small pocket FSs associated with extremely heavy masses cannot be fully excluded.

Field-reentrant superconductivity close to a metamagnetic transition in the heavy-fermion superconductor UTe$_2$

We present a study of the upper critical field of the newly discovered heavy fermion superconductor UTe$_2$ by magnetoresistivity measurements in pulsed magnetic fields up to 60~T and static magnetic fields up to 35~T. We show that superconductivity survives up to the metamagnetic transition at $H_{\rm m} \approx 35$~T at low temperature. Above $H_{\rm m}$ superconductivity is suppressed. At higher temperature superconductivity is enhanced under magnetic field leading to reentrance of superconductivity or an almost temperature independent increase of $H_{\rm c2}$. By studying the angular dependence of the upper critical field close to the $b$ axis (hard magnetization axis) we show that the maximum of the reentrant superconductivity temperature is depinned from the metamagnetic field. A key ingredient for the field-reinforcement of superconductivity on approaching $H_{\rm m}$ appears to be an immediate interplay with magnetic fluctuations and a possible Fermi-surface reconstruction.

Electronic transport in high magnetic fields of thin film MnSi

We present a study of the magnetoresistivity of thin film MnSi in high magnetic fields. We establish that the magnetoresistivity can be understood in terms of spin fluctuation theory, allowing us to compare our data to studies of bulk material. Despite of a close qualitative resemblance of bulk and thin film data, there are clear quantitative differences. We propose that these reflect a difference of the spin fluctuation spectra in thin film and bulk material MnSi.

Lifshitz Transitions in the Ferromagnetic Superconductor UCoGe

We present high field magnetoresistance, Hall effect and thermopower measurements in the Ising-type ferromagnetic superconductor UCoGe. Magnetic field is applied along the easy magnetization $c$ axis of the orthorhombic crystal. In the different experimental probes we observed five successive anomalies at $H \approx 4$, 9, 12, 16, and 21~T. Magnetic quantum oscillations were detected both in resistivity and thermoelectric power. At most of the anomalies, significant changes of the oscillation frequencies and the effective masses have been observed indicating successive Fermi surface instabilities induced by the strong magnetic polarization under magnetic field.

Field-Temperature Phase Diagram and Entropy Landscape of CeAuSb$_2$

We report a field-temperature phase diagram and an entropy map for the heavy fermion compound CeAuSb$_2$. CeAuSb$_2$ orders antiferromagnetically below $T_N=6.6$~K, and has two metamagnetic transitions, at 2.8 and 5.6~T. The locations of the critical endpoints of the metamagnetic transitions, which may play a strong role in the putative quantum criticality of CeAuSb$_2$ and related compounds, are identified. The entropy map reveals an apparent entropy balance with Fermi liquid behavior, implying that above the Néel transition the Ce moments are incorporated into the Fermi liquid. High-field data showing that the magnetic behavior is remarkably anisotropic are also reported.

Incomplete devil's staircase in the magnetization curve of SrCu2(BO3)2

We report on NMR and torque measurements on the frustrated quasi-two-dimensional spin-dimer system SrCu2(BO3)2 in magnetic fields up to 34 T that reveal a sequence of magnetization plateaus at 1/8, 2/15, 1/6, and 1/4 of the saturation and two incommensurate phases below and above the 1/6 plateau. The magnetic structures determined by NMR involve a stripe order of triplets in all plateaus, suggesting that the incommensurate phases originate from proliferation of domain walls. We propose that the magnetization process of SrCu2(BO3)2 is best described as an incomplete devil's staircase.

High-Field Fermi Surface Properties in the Low Carrier Heavy Fermion Compound URu2Si2

We performed the Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) experiments of the low carrier heavy fermion compound URu2Si2 at high fields up to 34T and at low temperatures down to 30mK. All main SdH branches named alpha, beta and gamma were observed for all the measured field-directions (H // [001] -> [100], [100] -> [110] and [001] -> [110]), indicating that these are attributed to the closed Fermi surfaces with nearly spherical shapes. Anomalous split of branch alpha was detected for the field along the basal plane, and the split immediately disappears by tilting the field to [001] direction, implying a fingerprint of the hidden order state. High field experiments reveal the complicated field-dependence of the SdH frequencies and the cyclotron masses due to the Zeeman spin-splitting associated with the Fermi surface reconstruction in the hidden order state with small carrier numbers. A new SdH branch named omega with large cyclotron mass of 25m0 was detected at high fields above 23T close to the hidden order instabilities.

Field-induced Phenomena in Ferromagnetic Superconductors UCoGe and URhGe

We review our recent studies on ferromagnetic superconductors, UGe2, URhGe and UCoGe, where the spin-triplet state with the so-called equal spin pairing is realized. We focus on experimental results of URhGe and UCoGe in which the superconductivity occurs already at ambient pressure. The huge upper critical field Hc2 on UCoGe for the field along the hard magnetization axis (b-axis) is confirmed by the AC susceptibility measurements by the fine tuning of field angle. Contrary to the huge Hc2 along the hard-magnetization axis, Hc2 along the easy-magnetization axis (c-axis) is relatively small in value. However, the initial slope of Hc2, namely dHc2/dT (H -> 0) both in UCoGe and in URhGe indicates the large value, which can be explained by the magnetic domain effect detected in the magnetization measurements. The specific heat measurements using a high quality single crystal of UCoGe demonstrate the bulk superconductivity, which is extended under magnetic field for the field along c-axis.

Field induced phases in UPt2Si2

The tetragonal compound UPt2Si2 has been characterised as a moderately mass enhanced system with an antiferromagnetic ground state below T_N = 32 K. Here, we present an extensive study of the behavior in high magnetic fields. We have performed pulsed field magnetization and static field resistivity measurements on single crystalline samples UPt2Si2. Along the crystallographic a axis, at low temperatures, we find a metamagnetic-like transition in fields of the order 40 T, possibly indicating a first order transition. Along the crystallographic c axis, in magnetic fields of B>= ~24 T, we find distinct anomalies in both properties. From our analysis of the data we can distinguish new high field phases above the AFM ground state. We discuss the emergence of these new phases in the context of Fermi surface effects and the possible occurrence of a Lifshitz or electronic topological transition, this in contrast to previous modellings of UPt2Si2 based on crystal electric field effects.

High-Field de Haas-van Alphen Effect in non-centrosymmetric CeCoGe3 and LaCoGe3

We report on de Haas-van Alphen effect measurements in the non-centrosymmetric systems CeCoGe3 and LaCoGe3 in magnetic field up to 28 Tesla. In both compounds, two new high frequencies were observed in high fields. The frequencies were not detected in previous lower field measurements. The frequencies do not originate from magnetic breakdown, and, therefore, are likely to be intrinsic features of the compounds. In CeCoGe3, the corresponding effective masses are strongly enhanced, being of the order of 30 bare electron masses.

Superconductivity Reinforced by Magnetic Field and the Magnetic Instability in Uranium Ferromagnets

We review our recent results on ferromagnetic superconductors, URhGe and UCoGe. High quality single crystals of both compounds were successfully grown. The specific heat shows a clear jump related to the superconducting transition in UCoGe. The finite values of C/T at 0K are discussed in terms of the self-induced vortex state and the value of the ordered moment. With increasing fields for H // b-axis in URhGe, the jump of thermal expansion increases and shifts to lower temperature. The re-entrant and S-shaped superconducting phases for URhGe and UCoGe respectively are explained by the unusual field dependence of the effective mass, which is induced by the ferromagnetic instability when the field is applied along the hard magnetization b-axis. The magnetic fluctuations are very sensitive to the field orientation. This is reflected in the Hc2 and the anisotropy of the effective mass.

First Observation of Quantum Oscillations in the Ferromagnetic Superconductor UCoGe

We succeeded in growing high quality single crystals of the ferromagnetic superconductor UCoGe and measured the magnetoresistance at fields up to 34T. The Shubnikov-de Haas signal was observed for the first time in a U-111 system (UTGe, UTSi, T: transition metal). A small pocket Fermi surface (F~1kT) with large cyclotron effective mass 25m0 was detected at high fields above 22T, implying that UCoGe is a low carrier system accompanyed with heavy quasi-particles. The observed frequency decreases with increasing fields, indicating that the volume of detected Fermi surface changes nonlinearly with field. The cyclotron mass also decreases, which is consistent with the decrease of the A coefficient of resistivity.
