Electromagnetic wave analogue of electronic diode

An electronic diode is a nonlinear semiconductor circuit component that allows conduction of electrical current in one direction only. A component with similar functionality for electromagnetic waves, an electromagnetic isolator, is based on the Faraday effect of the polarization state rotation and is also a key component of optical and microwave systems. Here we demonstrate a chiral electromagnetic diode, which is a direct analogue of an electronic diode: its functionality is underpinned by an extraordinary strong nonlinear wave propagation effect in the same way as electronic diode function is provided by a nonlinear current characteristic of a semiconductor junction. The effect exploited in this new electromagnetic diode is an intensity-dependent polarization change in an artificial chiral metamolecule. This microwave effect exceeds a similar optical effect previously observed in natural crystals by more than 12 orders of magnitude and a direction-dependent transmission that differing by a factor of 65.

Metamaterial tuning by manipulation of near-field interaction

We analyze the near-field interaction between the resonant sub-wavelength elements of a metamaterial, and present a method to calculate the electric and magnetic interaction coefficients. We show that by adjusting the relative configuration of the neighboring split ring resonators it becomes possible to manipulate this near-field interaction, and thus tune the response of metamaterials. We use the results of this analysis to explain the experimentally observed tuning of microwave metamaterials.

Rotational tuning of interaction in metamaterials

We experimentally observe the tuning of metamaterials through the relative rotation of the elements about their common axis. In contrast to previous results we observe a crossing of resonances, where the symmetric and anti-symmetric modes become degenerate. We associate this effect with an interplay between the magnetic and electric near-field interactions and verify this by calculations based on the interaction energy between resonators.

Tunable fishnet metamaterials infiltrated by liquid crystals

We analyze numerically the optical response and effective macroscopic parameters of fishnet metamaterials infiltrated with a nematic liquid crystal. We show that even a small amount of liquid crystal can provide tuning of the structures due to reorientation of the liquid crystal director. This enables switchable optical metamaterials, where the refractive index can be switched from positive to negative by an external field. This tuning is primarily determined by the shift of the cut-off wavelength of the holes, with only a small influence due to the change in plasmon dispersion

Anderson Localization of Classical Waves in Weakly Scattering Metamaterials

We study the propagation and localization of classical waves in one-dimensional disordered structures composed of alternating layers of left- and right-handed materials (mixed stacks) and compare them to the structures composed of different layers of the same material (homogeneous stacks). For weakly scattering layers, we have developed an effective analytical approach and have calculated the transmission length within a wide region of the input parameters. When both refractive index and layer thickness of a mixed stack are random, the transmission length in the long-wave range of the localized regime exhibits a quadratic power wavelength dependence with the coefficients different for mixed and homogeneous stacks. Moreover, the transmission length of a mixed stack differs from reciprocal of the Lyapunov exponent of the corresponding infinite stack. In both the ballistic regime of a mixed stack and in the near long-wave region of a homogeneous stack, the transmission length of a realization is a strongly fluctuating quantity. In the far long-wave part of the ballistic region, the homogeneous stack becomes effectively uniform and the transmission length fluctuations are weaker. The crossover region from the localization to the ballistic regime is relatively narrow for both mixed and homogeneous stacks. In mixed stacks with only refractive-index disorder, Anderson localization at long wavelengths is substantially suppressed, with the localization length growing with the wavelength much faster than for homogeneous stacks. The crossover region becomes essentially wider and transmission resonances appear only in much longer stacks. All theoretical predictions are in an excellent agreement with the results of numerical simulations.

Surface Bloch waves in metamaterial and metal-dielectric superlattices

We study the properties of electromagnetic Bloch waves in semi-infinite periodic structures created by alternating metamaterial and dielectric layers. We derive and analyze the dispersion relations in the long-wavelength limit for both TE- and TM-polarized surface Bloch modes, for magnetic metamaterials with negative refraction and metal-dielectric plasmonic superlattices. We reveal that in the subwavelength regime the bulk modes are characterized by three different refractive indices ("tri-refringence") while the surface modes can propagate parallel to the Bloch wavevector and along the interface between superlattice and semi-infinite dielectric.

Nonlinear Electric Metamaterials

We propose and design a new type of nonlinear metamaterials exhibiting a resonant electric response at microwave frequencies. By introducing a varactor diode as a nonlinear element within each resonator, we are able to shift the frequency of the electric mode stop-band by changing the incident power, without affecting the magnetic response. These elements could be combined with the previously developed nonlinear magnetic metamaterials in order to create negative index media with control over both electric and magnetic nonlinearities.

Asymmetric parametric amplification in nonlinear left-handed transmission lines

We study parametric amplification in nonlinear left-handed transmission lines, which serve as model systems for nonlinear negative index metamaterials. We experimentally demonstrate amplification of a weak pump signal in three regimes: with the signal in the left-handed band, with the signal in the stop band, and with the signal at a defect frequency. In particular, we demonstrate the amplification of the incident wave by up to 15dB in the left-handed regime.

Dispersion extraction with near-field measurements in periodic waveguides

We formulate and demonstrate experimentally the high-resolution spectral method based on Bloch-wave symmetry properties for extracting mode dispersion in periodic waveguides from measurements of near-field profiles. We characterize both the propagating and evanescent modes, and also determine the amplitudes of forward and backward waves in different waveguide configurations, with the estimated accuracy of several percent or less. Whereas the commonly employed spatial Fourier-transform (SFT) analysis provides the wavenumber resolution which is limited by the inverse length of the waveguide, we achieve precise dispersion extraction even for compact photonic structures.

Goos-Hänchen and Imbert-Fedorov shifts of polarized vortex beams

We study, analytically and numerically, reflection and transmission of an arbitrarily polarized vortex beam on an interface separating two dielectric media and derive general expressions for linear and angular Goos-Hanchen and Imbert-Fedorov shifts. We predict a novel vortex-induced Goos-Hanchen shift, and also reveal direct connection between the spin-induced angular shifts and the vortex-induced linear shifts.

Tunable transmission and harmonic generation in nonlinear metamaterials

We study the properties of a tunable nonlinear metamaterial operating at microwave frequencies. We fabricate the nonlinear metamaterial composed of double split-ring resonators and wires where a varactor diode is introduced into each resonator so that the magnetic resonance can be tuned dynamically by varying the input power. We show that at higher powers the transmission of the metamaterial becomes power dependent, and we demonstrate experimentally power-dependent transmission properties and selective generation of higher harmonics.

Cut-wire-pair structures as two-dimensional magnetic metamaterials

We study numerically and experimentally magnetic metamaterials based on cut-wire pairs instead of split-ring resonators. The cut-wire pair planar structure is extended in order to create a truly two-dimensional metamaterial suitable for scaling to optical frequencies. We fabricate the cut-wire metamaterial operating at microwave frequencies with lattice spacing around 10% of the free-space wavelength, and find good agreement with direct numerical simulations. Unlike the structures based on split-ring resonators, the nearest-neighbor coupling in cut-wire pairs can result in a magnetic stop-band with propagation in the transverse direction.

Multistability in nonlinear left-handed transmission lines

Employing a nonlinear left-handed transmission line as a model system, we demonstrate experimentally the multi-stability phenomena predicted theoretically for microstructured left-handed metamaterials with a nonlinear response. We show that the bistability is associated with the period doubling which at higher power may result in chaotic dynamics of the transmission line.

Ideal and nonideal electromagnetic cloaks

We employ the analytical results for the spatial transformation of the electromagnetic fields to obtain and analyze explicit expressions for the structure of the electromagnetic fields in invisibility cloaks, beam splitters, and field concentrators. We study the efficiency of nonideal electromagnetic cloaks and discuss the effect of scattering losses on the cloak invisibility.

Optical Bloch oscillations in periodic structures with metamaterials

We predict that optical Bloch oscillations can be observed in layered structures with left-handed metamaterials and zero average refractive index where the layer thickness varies linearly across the structure. We demonstrate a new type of the Bloch oscillations associated with coupled surface waves excited at the interfaces between the layers with left-handed material and conventional dielectric.

Tunable split-ring resonators for nonlinear negative-index metamaterials

We study experimentally the dynamic tunability and self-induced nonlinearity of split-ring resonators incorporating variable capacitance diodes. We demonstrate that the eigenfrequencies of the resonators can be tuned over a wide frequency range, and significantly, we show that the self-induced nonlinear effects observed in the varactor-loaded split-ring resonator structures can appear at relatively low power levels.

Backward Tamm states in left-handed metamaterials

We study the electromagnetic surface waves localized at an interface separating a one-dimensional photonic crystal and left-handed metamaterial, the so-called surface Tamm states. We demonstrate that the metamaterial allows for a flexible control of the dispersion properties of surface states, and can support the Tamm states with a backward energy flow and a vortex-like structure.

Nonlinear magnetoinductive waves and domain walls in composite metamaterials

We describe novel physics of nonlinear magnetoinductive waves in left-handed composite metamaterials. We derive the coupled equations for describing the propagation of magnetoinductive waves, and show that in the nonlinear regime the magnetic response of a metamaterial may become bistable. We analyze modulational instability of different nonlinear states, and also demonstrate that nonlinear metamaterials may support the propagation of domain walls (kinks) connecting the regions with the positive and negative magnetization.
