Enhanced parametric processes in binary metamaterials

We suggest double-resonant (binary) metamaterials composed of two types of magnetic resonant elements, and demonstrate that in the nonlinear regime such metamaterials provide unique possibilities for phase-matched parametric interaction and enhanced second-harmonic generation.

Effect of microscopic disorder on magnetic properties of metamaterials

We analyze the effect of microscopic disorder on the macroscopic properties of composite metamaterials and study how weak statistically independent fluctuations of the parameters of structure elements can modify their collective magnetic response and left-handed properties. We demonstrate that even a weak microscopic disorder may lead to a substantial modification of the metamaterial magnetic properties, and 10% deviation in the parameters of the microscopic resonant elements may lead to a substantial suppression of wave propagation in a wide frequency range. A noticeable suppression occurs also if more than 10% of resonant magnetic elements possess strongly different properties, but in this latter case the defects can create an additional weak resonant line. These results are of the key importance for characterizing and optimizing the novel composite metamaterials with left-handed properties at terahertz and optical frequencies.

Wave scattering by metamaterial wedges and interfaces

We outline specific features of numerical simulations of metamaterial wedges and interfaces. We study the effect of different positioning of a grid in the Yee method, which is necessary to obtain consistent convergence in modeling of interfaces with metamaterials characterized by negative dielectric permittivity and negative magnetic permeability. We demonstrate however that, in the framework of the continuous-medium approximation, wave scattering on the wedge may result in a resonant excitation of surface waves with infinitely large spatial frequencies, leading to non-convergence of the simulation results that depend on the discretization step.

Complete bandgaps in one-dimensional left-handed periodic structures

Artificially fabricated structures with periodically modulated parameters such as photonic crystals offer novel ways of controlling the flow of light due to the existence of a range of forbidden frequencies associated with a photonic bandgap. It is believed that modulation of the refractive index in all three spatial dimensions is required to open a complete bandgap and prevent the propagation of electromagnetic waves in all directions. Here we reveal that, in a sharp contrast to what was known before and contrary to the accepted physical intuition, a one-dimensional periodic structure containing the layers of transparent left-handed (or negative-index) metamaterial can trap light in three-dimensional space due to the existence of a complete bandgap.

Second-harmonic generation in nonlinear left-handed metamaterials

We study the second-harmonic generation in left-handed metamaterials with a quadratic nonlinear response. We demonstrate a novel type of the exact phase matching between the backward propagating wave of the fundamental frequency and the forward propagating wave of the second harmonics. We show that this novel parametric process can convert a surface of the left-handed metamaterial into an effective mirror totally reflecting the second harmonics generated by an incident wave. We derive and analyze theoretically the coupled-mode equations for a semi-infinite nonlinear metamaterial. We also study numerically the second-harmonic generation by a metamaterial slab of a finite thickness, and reveal the existence of multistable nonlinear effects.

Birefringent left-handed metamaterials and perfect lenses

We describe the properties of birefringent left-handed metamaterials and introduce the concept of a birefringent perfect lens. We demonstrate that, in a sharp contrast to the conventional left-handed perfect lens at $ε=μ=-1$, where $ε$ is the dielectric constant and $μ$ is the magnetic permeability, the birefringent left-handed lens can focus either TE or TM polarized waves or both of them, allowing a spatial separation of the TE and TM images. We discuss several applications of the birefringent left-handed lenses such as the beam splitting and near-field diagnostics at the sub-wavelength scale.

Bistable diode action in left-handed periodic structures

We study nonlinear transmission of an asymmetric multilayer structure created by alternating slabs of two materials with positive and negative refractive index. We demonstrate that such a structure exhibits passive spatially nonreciprocal transmission of electromagnetic waves, the analogue of the electronic diode. We study the properties of this left-handed diode and confirm its highly nonreciprocal and bistable transmittance by employing direct simulations.

Excitation of guided waves in layered structures with negative refraction

We study the electromagnetic beam reflection from layered structures that include the so-called double-negative materials, also called left-handed metamaterials. We predict that such structures can demonstrate a giant lateral Goos-Hanchen shift of the scattered beam accompanied by splitting of the reflected and transmitted beams due to the resonant excitation of surface waves at the interfaces between the conventional and double-negative materials as well as due to excitation of leaky modes in the layered structures. The beam shift can be either positive or negative, depending on the type of the guided waves excited by the incoming beam. We also perform finite-difference time-domain simulations and confirm the major effects predicted analytically.

Suppression of left-handed properties in disordered metamaterials

We study the effect of disorder on the effective magnetic response of composite left-handed metamaterials and their specific properties such as negative refraction. We show that relatively weak disorder in the split-ring resonators can reduce and even completely eliminate the frequency domain where the composite material demonstrates the left-handed properties. We introduce the concept of the order parameter to describe novel physics of this effect.

Nonlinear left-handed metamaterials

We analyze nonlinear properties of microstructured materials with negative refraction, the so-called left-handed metamaterials. We demonstrate that the hysteresis-type dependence of the magnetic permeability on the field intensity allows changing the material properties from left- to right-handed and back. Using the finite-difference time-domain simulations, we study wave transmission through the slab of nonlinear left-handed material, and predict existence of temporal solitons in such materials. We demonstrate also that nonlinear left-handed metamaterials can support both TE- and TM-polarized self-trapped localized beams, spatial electromagnetic solitons. Such solitons appear as single- and multi-hump beams, being either symmetric or antisymmetric, and they can exist due to the hysteresis-type magnetic nonlinearity and the effective domains of negative magnetic permeability.

Tunable transmission and bistability in left-handed bandgap structures

We study the defect-induced nonlinear transmission of a periodic structure created by alternating slabs of two materials with positive and negative refractive index. We demonstrate bistable switching and tunable nonlinear transmission in a novel type of bandgap that corresponds to the vanishing average refractive index, and compare the observed effects for two types of the bandgaps.

Subwavelength imaging with opaque left-handed nonlinear lens

We introduce the concept of subwavelength imaging with an opaque nonlinear left-handed lens by generating the second-harmonic field. We consider a slab of composite left-handed metamaterial with quadratic nonlinear response and show that such a flat lens can form, under certain conditions, an image of the second-harmonic field of the source being opaque at the fundamental frequency.

Transmission properties of left-handed band-gap structures

We analyze transmission of electromagnetic waves through a periodic band-gap structure consisting of slabs of a left-handed metamaterial and air. Using the effective parameters of the metamaterial derived from its microscopic structure, we study, with the help of the transfer-matrix approach and by means of the finite-difference-time-domain numerical simulations, the transmission properties of such a left-handed photonic crystals in a novel type of band gap associated with the zero averaged refractive index. We demonstrate that the transmission can be made tunable by introducing defects, which allow to access selectively two different types of band gaps.

Nonlinear surface waves in left-handed materials

We study both linear and nonlinear surface waves localized at the interface separating a left-handed medium (i.e. the medium with both negative dielectric permittivity and negative magnetic permeability) and a conventional (or right-handed) dielectric medium. We demonstrate that the interface can support both TE- and TM-polarized surface waves - surface polaritons, and we study their properties. We describe the intensity-dependent properties of nonlinear surface waves in three different cases, i.e. when both the LH and RH media are nonlinear and when either of the media is nonlinear. In the case when both media are nonlinear, we find two types of nonlinear surface waves, one with the maximum amplitude at the interface, and the other one with two humps. In the case when one medium is nonlinear, only one type of surface wave exists, which has the maximum electric field at the interface, unlike waves in right-handed materials where the surface-wave maximum is usually shifted into a self-focussing nonlinear medium. We discus the possibility of tuning the wave group velocity in both the linear and nonlinear cases, and show that group-velocity dispersion, which leads to pulse broadening, can be balanced by the nonlinearity of the media, so resulting in soliton propagation.

Nonlinear guided waves and symmetry breaking in left-handed waveguides

We analyze nonlinear guided waves in a planar waveguide made of a left-handed material surrounded by a Kerr-like nonlinear dielectric. We predict that such a waveguide can support fast and slow symmetric and antisymmetric nonlinear modes. We study the symmetry breaking bifurcation and asymmetric modes in such a symmetric structure. We analyze nonlinear dispersion properties of the guided waves, and show that the modes can be both forward and backward.

Giant Goos-Hanchen effect at the reflection from left-handed metamaterials

We study the beam reflection from a layered structure with a left-handed metamaterial. We predict a giant lateral (Goos-Hanchen) shift and splitting of the beam due to the resonant excitation of surface polaritons with a vortex-like energy flow between the right- and left-handed materials.

Nonlinear properties of left-handed metamaterials

We analyze nonlinear properties of microstructured materials with negative refraction, the so-called left-handed metamaterials. We consider a two-dimensional periodic structure created by arrays of wires and split-ring resonators embedded into a nonlinear dielectric, and calculate the effective nonlinear electric permittivity and magnetic permeability. We demonstrate that the hysteresis-type dependence of the magnetic permeability on the field intensity allows changing the material from left- to right-handed and back. These effects can be treated as the second-order phase transitions in the transmission properties induced by the variation of an external field.
