Deformation quantization of moduli spaces of Higgs bundles on a Riemann surface with translation structure

Let X be a compact connected Riemann surface of genus g > 0 equipped with a nonzero holomorphic 1-form. Let M denote the moduli space of semistable Higgs bundles on X of rank r and degree r(g-1)+1; it is a complex symplectic manifold. Using the translation structure on the open subset of X where the 1-form does not vanish, we construct a natural deformation quantization of a certain nonempty Zariski open subset of M.

Uniformization of branched surfaces and Higgs bundles

Given a compact Riemann surface $Σ$ of genus $g_Σ\, \geq\, 2$, and an effective divisor $D\, =\, \sum_i n_i x_i$ on $Σ$ with $\text{degree}(D)\, <\, 2(g_Σ-1)$, there is a unique cone metric on $Σ$ of constant negative curvature $-4$ such that the cone angle at each $x_i$ is $2πn_i$ (see McOwen and Troyanov [McO,Tr]). We describe the Higgs bundle corresponding to this uniformization associated to the above conical metric. We also give a family of Higgs bundles on $Σ$ parametrized by a nonempty open subset of $H^0(Σ,\,K_Σ^{\otimes 2}\otimes{\mathcal O}_Σ(-2D))$ that correspond to conical metrics of the above type on moving Riemann surfaces. These are inspired by Hitchin's results in [Hi1], for the case $D\,=\, 0$.

Branes and moduli spaces of Higgs bundles on smooth projective varieties

Given a smooth complex projective variety $M$ and a smooth closed curve $X \subset M$ such that the homomorphism of fundamental groups $π_1(X) \rightarrow π_1(M)$ is surjective, we study the restriction map of Higgs bundles, namely from Higgs bundles on $M$ to those on $X$. In particular, we investigate the interplay between this restriction map and various types of branes contained in the moduli spaces of Higgs bundles on $M$ and $X$. We also consider the set-up where a finite group is acting on $M$ via holomorphic automorphisms or anti-holomorphic involutions, and the curve $X$ is preserved by the action. Branes are studied in this context.

Higher dimensional formal orbifolds and orbifold bundles in positive characteristic

In \cite{KP}, the last two authors introduced formal orbifold curves defined over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristics. They studied both étale and Nori fundamental group schemes associated to such objects. Our aim here is to study the higher dimensional analog of these objects objects and their fundamental groups.

Vector bundles and connections on Riemann surfaces with projective structure

Let ${\mathcal B}_g(r)$ be the moduli space of triples of the form $(X,\, K^{1/2}_X,\, F)$, where $X$ is a compact connected Riemann surface of genus $g$, with $g\, \geq\, 2$, $K^{1/2}_X$ is a theta characteristic on $X$, and $F$ is a stable vector bundle on $X$ of rank $r$ and degree zero. We construct a $T^*{\mathcal B}_g(r)$--torsor ${\mathcal H}_g(r)$ over ${\mathcal B}_g(r)$. This generalizes on the one hand the torsor over the moduli space of stable vector bundles of rank $r$, on a fixed Riemann surface $Y$, given by the moduli space of holomorphic connections on the stable vector bundles of rank $r$ on $Y$, and on the other hand the torsor over the moduli space of Riemann surfaces given by the moduli space of Riemann surfaces with a projective structure. It is shown that ${\mathcal H}_g(r)$ has a holomorphic symplectic structure compatible with the $T^*{\mathcal B}_g(r)$--torsor structure. We also describe ${\mathcal H}_g(r)$ in terms of the second order matrix valued differential operators. It is shown that ${\mathcal H}_g(r)$ is identified with the $T^*{\mathcal B}_g(r)$--torsor given by the sheaf of holomorphic connections on the theta line bundle over ${\mathcal B}_g(r)$.

Quillen connection and the uniformization of Riemann surfaces

The Quillen connection on ${\mathcal L} \rightarrow {\mathcal M}_g$, where ${\mathcal L}^*$ is the Hodge line bundle over the moduli stack of smooth complex projective curves curves ${\mathcal M}_g$, $g \geq 5$, is uniquely determined by the condition that its curvature is the Weil--Petersson form on ${\mathcal M}_g$. The bundle of holomorphic connections on ${\mathcal L}$ has a unique holomorphic isomorphism with the bundle on ${\mathcal M}_g$ given by the moduli stack of projective structures. This isomorphism takes the $C^\infty$ section of the first bundle given by the Quillen connection on ${\mathcal L}$ to the $C^\infty$ section of the second bundle given by the uniformization theorem. Therefore, any one of these two sections determines the other uniquely.

A canonical connection on bundles on Riemann surfaces and Quillen connection on the theta bundle

We investigate the symplectic geometric and differential geometric aspects of the moduli space of connections on a compact Riemann surface $X$. Fix a theta characteristic $K^{1/2}_X$ on $X$; it defines a theta divisor on the moduli space ${\mathcal M}$ of stable vector bundles on $X$ of rank $r$ degree zero. Given a vector bundle $E \in {\mathcal M}$ lying outside the theta divisor, we construct a natural holomorphic connection on $E$ that depends holomorphically on $E$. Using this holomorphic connection, we construct a canonical holomorphic isomorphism between the following two: \begin{enumerate} \item the moduli space $\mathcal C$ of pairs $(E, D)$, where $E\in {\mathcal M}$ and $D$ is a holomorphic connection on $E$, and \item the space ${\rm Conn}(Θ)$ given by the sheaf of holomorphic connections on the line bundle on $\mathcal M$ associated to the theta divisor. \end{enumerate} The above isomorphism between $\mathcal C$ and ${\rm Conn}(Θ)$ is symplectic structure preserving, and it moves holomorphically as $X$ runs over a holomorphic family of Riemann surfaces.

Canonical subsheaves of torsionfree semistable sheaves

Let $F$ be a torsionfree semistable coherent sheaf on a polarized normal projective variety. We prove that $F$ has a unique maximal locally free subsheaf $V$ such that $F/V$ is torsionfree and $V$ admits a filtration of subbundles for which each successive quotient is stable whose slope is $μ(F)$. We also prove that $F$ has a unique maximal reflexive subsheaf $W$ such that $F/W$ is torsionfree and $W$ admits a filtration of subsheaves for which each successive quotient is a stable reflexive sheaf whose slope is $μ(F)$. We show that these canonical subsheaves behave well with respect to the pullback operation by étale Galois covering maps. Given a separable finite surjective map $ϕ:Y \, \rightarrow X$ between normal projective varieties, we give a criterion for the induced homomorphism of étale fundamental groups $ϕ_* : π^{\rm et}_{1}(Y) \rightarrow π^{\rm et}_{1}(X)$ to be surjective; this criterion is in terms of the above mentioned unique maximal locally free subsheaf associated to $ϕ_*{\mathcal O}_Y$.

Fundamental group of moduli of principal bundles on curves

Let $X$ be a compact connected Riemann surface of genus at least two, and let ${G}$ be a connected semisimple affine algebraic group defined over $\mathbb C$. For any $δ\in π_1({G})$, we prove that the moduli space of semistable principal ${G}$--bundles over $X$ of topological type $δ$ is simply connected. In contrast, the fundamental group of the moduli stack of principal ${G}$--bundles over $X$ of topological type $δ$ is shown to be isomorphic to $H^1(X, π_1({G}))$.

On the generalized SO(2n,C)-opers

Since their introduction by Beilinson-Drinfeld \cite{BD,Opers1}, opers have seen several generalizations. In \cite{BSY} a higher rank analog was studied, named {generalized $B$-opers}, where the successive quotients of the oper filtration are allowed to have higher rank and the underlying holomorphic vector bundle is endowed with a bilinear form which is compatible with both the filtration and the oper connection. Since the definition didn't encompass the even orthogonal groups, we dedicate this paper to study generalized $B$-opers whose structure group is ${\rm SO}(2n,\mathbb{C})$, and show their close relationship with geometric structures on a Riemann surface.

Generalized symmetry in noncommutative (complex) geometry

We introduce Hopf algebroid covariance on Woronowicz's differential calculus. Using it, we develop quite a general framework of noncommutative complex geometry that subsumes the one in [2]. We present transverse complex and Kähler structures as examples and discuss several other examples. Relation with past literature is described.

On certain Tannakian categories of integrable connections over Kaehler manifolds

Given a compact Kaehler manifold X, it is shown that pairs of the form (E, D), where E is a trivial holomorphic vector bundle on X, and D is an integrable holomorphic connection on $E$, produce a neutral Tannakian category. The corresponding pro-algebraic affine group scheme is studied. In particular, it is shown that this pro-algebraic affine group scheme for a compact Riemann surface determines uniquely the isomorphism class of the Riemann surface.

Holomorphic $\mathfrak{sl}(2,\mathbb C)$-systems with Fuchsian monodromy (with an appendix by Takuro Mochizuki)

For every integer $g \,\geq\, 2$ we show the existence of a compact Riemann surface $Σ$ of genus $g$ such that the rank two trivial holomorphic vector bundle ${\mathcal O}^{\oplus 2}_Σ$ admits holomorphic connections with $\text{SL}(2,{\mathbb R})$ monodromy and maximal Euler class. Such a monodromy representation is known to coincide with the Fuchsian uniformizing representation for some Riemann surface of genus $g$. The construction carries over to all very stable and compatible real holomorphic structures for the topologically trivial rank two bundle over $Σ$ and gives the existence of holomorphic connections with Fuchsian monodromy in these cases as well.

Surface group representations in ${\rm SL}_2({\mathbb C})$ with finite mapping class orbits

Given an oriented surface of positive genus with finitely many punctures, we classify the finite orbits of the mapping class group action on the moduli space of semisimple complex special linear two dimensional representations of the fundamental group of the surface. For surfaces of genus at least two, such orbits correspond to homomorphisms with finite image. For genus one, they correspond to the finite or special dihedral representations. We also obtain an analogous result for bounded orbits in the moduli space.

On vector bundles over moduli spaces trivial on Hecke curves

Let $M_X(r,ξ)$ be the moduli space of stable vector bundles, on a smooth complex projective curve $X$, of rank $r$ and fixed determinant $ξ$ such that $°(ξ)$ is coprime to $r$. If $E$ is a vector bundle $M_X(r,ξ)$ whose restriction to every Hecke curve in $M_X(r,ξ)$ is trivial, we prove that $E$ is trivial.
