Brauer Group of Moduli Spaces of PGL(r)-Bundles over a curve

We compute the Brauer group of the moduli stack of stable PGL(r)-bundles on a curve $X$ over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. We also show that the Brauer group of such a moduli stack coincides with the Brauer group of the smooth locus of the corresponding coarse moduli space of stable PGL(r)-bundles on $X$.

Principal bundles over finite fields

Let M be an irreducible smooth projective variety defined over \bar{{\mathbb F}_p}. Let π(M, x_0) be the fundamental group scheme of M with respect to a base point x_0. Let G be a connected semisimple linear algebraic group over \bar{{\mathbb F}_p}. Fix a parabolic subgroup P \subsetneq G, and also fix a strictly anti-dominant character χof P. Let E_G \to M be a principal G-bundle such that the associated line bundle E_G(χ) \to E_G/P is numerically effective. We prove that E_G is given by a homomorphism π(M, x_0)\to G. As a consequence, there is no principal G-bundle E_G \to M such that degree(ϕ^*E_G(χ)) > 0 for every pair (Y ,ϕ), where Y is an irreducible smooth projective curve, and ϕ: Y\to E_G/P is a nonconstant morphism.

Universal vector bundle over the reals

Let X_R be a geometrically irreducible smooth projective curve, defined over R, such that X_R does not have any real points. Let X= X_R\times_R C be the complex curve. We show that there is a universal real algebraic line bundle over X_R x Pic^d(X_R)$ if and only if $χ(L)$ is odd for L in Pic^d(X_R)$. There is a universal quaternionic algebraic line bundle over X x Pic^d(X) if and only if the degree d is odd. Take integers r and d such that r > 1, and d is coprime to r. Let M_{X_R}(r,d) (respectively, M_X(r,d)$) be the moduli space of stable vector bundles over X_R (respectively, X) of rank r and degree d. We prove that there is a universal real algebraic vector bundle over X_R x M_{X_R}(r,d) if and only if χ(E) is odd for E in M_{X_R}(r,d). There is a universal quaternionic vector bundle over X x M_X(r,d) if and only if the degree d is odd. The cases where X_R is geometrically reducible or X_R has real points are also investigated.

Morse theory for the space of Higgs G-bundles

Fix a $C^\infty$ principal $G$--bundle $E^0_G$ on a compact connected Riemann surface $X$, where $G$ is a connected complex reductive linear algebraic group. We consider the gradient flow of the Yang--Mills--Higgs functional on the cotangent bundle of the space of all smooth connections on $E^0_G$. We prove that this flow preserves the subset of Higgs $G$--bundles, and, furthermore, the flow emanating from any point of this subset has a limit. Given a Higgs $G$--bundle, we identify the limit point of the integral curve passing through it. These generalize the results of the second named author on Higgs vector bundles.

Vector bundles trivialized by proper morphisms and the fundamental group scheme

Let X be a smooth projective variety defined over an algebraically closed field k. Nori constructed a category of vector bundles on X, called essentially finite vector bundles, which is reminiscent of the category of representations of the fundamental group (in characteristic zero). In fact, this category is equivalent to the category of representations of a pro--finite group scheme which controls all finite torsors. We show that essentially finite vector bundles coincide with those which become trivial after being pulled back by some proper and surjective morphism to X.

On semistable principal bundles over a complex projective manifold, II

Let (X, ω) be a compact connected Kaehler manifold of complex dimension d and E_G a holomorphic principal G-bundle on X, where G is a connected reductive linear algebraic group defined over C. Let Z (G) denote the center of G. We prove that the following three statements are equivalent: (1) There is a parabolic subgroup P of G and a holomorphic reduction of the structure group of E_G to P (say, E_P) such that the bundle obtained by extending the structure group of E_P to L(P)/Z(G) (where L(P) is the Levi quotient of P) admits a flat connection; (2) The adjoint vector bundle ad(E_G) is numerically flat; (3) The principal G-bundle E_G is pseudostable, and the degree of the charateristic class c_2(ad(E_G) is zero.

On principal bundles over a projective variety defined over a finite field

Let M be a geometrically irreducible smooth projective variety, defined over a finite field k, such that M admits a k-rational point x_0. Let \varpi(M,x_0) denote the corresponding fundamental group--scheme introduced by Nori. Let E_G be a principal G-bundle over M, where G is a reduced reductive linear algebraic group defined over the field k. Fix a polarization ξon M. We prove that the following three statements are equivalent: The principal G-bundle E_G over M is given by a homomorphism \varpi(M,x_0) --> G. There are integers b > a > 0 such that the principal G-bundle (F^b_M)^*E_G is isomorphic to (F^a_M)^*E_G, where F_M is the absolute Frobenius morphism of M. The principal G-bundle E_G is strongly semistable, degree(c_2(ad(E_G))c_1(ξ)^{d-2}) = 0, where d = \dim M, and degree(c_1(E_G(χ))c_1(ξ)^{d-1}) = 0 for every character χof G, where E_G(χ) is the line bundle over $M$ associated to $E_G$ for χ. The equivalence between the first statement and the third statement was proved by S. Subramanian under the extra assumption that dim(M) = 1 and $G$ is semisimple.

The moduli space of stable vector bundles over a real algebraic curve

We study the spaces of stable real and quaternionic vector bundles on a real algebraic curve. The basic relationship is established with unitary representations of an extension Z/2 by the fundamental group. By comparison with the space of real or quaternionic connections, some of the basic topological invariants of these spaces are calculated.

Homogeneous principal bundles and stability

Let G/P be a rational homogeneous variety, where P is a parabolic subgroup of a simple and simply connected linear algebraic group G defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. A homogeneous principal bundle over G/P is semistable (respectively, polystable) if and only if it is equivariantly semistable (respectively, equivariantly polystable). A stable homogeneous principal H-bundle (E_H ,ρ) is equivariantly stable, but the converse is not true in general. If a homogeneous principal H-bundle (E_H ,ρ) is not equivariantly stable but not stable, then E_H admits an action ρ' of G such that the pair (E_H ,ρ') is a homogeneous principal H-bundle which is not equivariantly stable.

Semistability and restrictions of tangent bundle to curves

We consider all complex projective manifolds X that satisfy at least one of the following three conditions: 1. There exists a pair $(C ,φ)$, where $C$ is a compact connected Riemann surface and $φ: C\to X$ a holomorphic map, such that the pull back $φ^*TX$ is not semistable. 2. The variety $X$ admits an étale covering by an abelian variety. 3. The dimension $\dim X \leq 1$. We conjecture that all complex projective manifolds are of the above type, and prove that the following classes are among those that are of the above type. i) All $X$ with a finite fundamental group. ii) All $X$ such that there is a nonconstant morphism from the projective line to $X$. iii) All $X$ such that the canonical line bundle $K_X$ is either positive or negative or $c_1(K_X) \in H^2(X, {\mathbb Q})$ vanishes. iv) All projective surfaces.

Compact Kähler manifolds with elliptic homotopy type

Simply connected compact Kähler manifolds of dimension up to three with elliptic homotopy type are characterized in terms of their Hodge diamonds. This is applied to classify the simply connected Kähler surfaces and Fano threefolds with elliptic homotopy type.

Torelli theorem for the Deligne--Hitchin moduli space

Fix integers $g\geq 3$ and $r\geq 2$, with $r\geq 3$ if $g=3$. Given a compact connected Riemann surface $X$ of genus $g$, let $\MDH(X)$ denote the corresponding $\text{SL}(r, {\mathbb C})$ Deligne--Hitchin moduli space. We prove that the complex analytic space $\MDH(X)$ determines (up to an isomorphism) the unordered pair $\{X, \overline{X}\}$, where $\overline{X}$ is the Riemann surface defined by the opposite almost complex structure on $X$.

Holomorphic Cartan geometries and Calabi--Yau manifolds

We prove that the only Calabi--Yau projective manifolds which bear holomorphic Cartan geometries are precisely the abelian varieties. (Nous démontrons que les seules variétés projectives de Calabi--Yau qui possèdent des géométrie holomorphes de Cartan sont les variétés abéliennes.)

Symplectic geometry of semisimple orbits

We prove that any coadjoint orbit with real eigenvalues of a complex semisimple Lie group, equipped with the real part of the canonical holomorphic symplectic form, is symplectomorphic to the cotangent bundle of a (partial) flag manifold. Moreover, we generalize this result to hyperbolic orbits in a real semisimple Lie algebra.

Some moduli stacks of symplectic bundles on a curve are rational

Let C be a smooth projective curve of genus at least 2 over a field k. Given a line bundle L on C, we consider the moduli stack of rank 2n vector bundles E on C endowed with a nowhere degenerate symplectic form $b: E \otimes E \to L$ up to scalars. We prove that this stack is birational to BG_m times an affine space A^s if n and the degree of L are both odd and C admits a k-rational point as well as a line bundle of degree 0 whose square is nontrivial. It follows that the corresponding coarse moduli scheme is rational in this case.

Torelli theorem for moduli spaces of SL(r,C)-connections on a compact Riemann surface

Let $X$ be any compact connected Riemann surface of genus $g \geq 3$. For any $r\geq 2$, let $M_X$ denote the moduli space of holomorphic $SL(r,C)$-connections over $X$. It is known that the biholomorphism class of the complex variety $M_X$ is independent of the complex structure of $X$. If $g=3$, then we assume that $r\geq 3$. We prove that the isomorphism class of the variety $M_X$ determines the Riemann surface $X$ uniquely up to isomorphism. A similar result is proved for the moduli space of holomorphic $GL(r,C)$-connections on $X$. We also show that the Torelli theorem remains valid for the moduli spaces of connections, as well as those of stable vector bundles, on geometrically irreducible smooth projective curves defined over the field of real numbers.
