Chen--Ruan cohomology of some moduli spaces

Let X be a compact connected Riemann surface of genus at least two. We compute the Chen--Ruan cohomology ring of the moduli space of stable PSL(2, C)--bundles of nontrivial second Stiefel--Whitney class over X.

Coupled vortex equations and Moduli: Deformation theoretic Approach and Kaehler Geometry

We investigate differential geometric aspects of moduli spaces parametrizing solutions of coupled vortex equations over a compact Kaehler manifold X. These solutions are known to be related to polystable triples via a Kobayashi-Hitchin type correspondence. Using a characterization of infinitesimal deformations in terms of the cohomology of a certain elliptic double complex, we construct a Hermitian structure on these moduli spaces. This Hermitian structure is proved to be Kaehler. The proof involves establishing a fiber integral formula for the Hermitian form. We compute the curvature tensor of this Kaehler form. When X is a Riemann surface, the holomorphic bisectional curvature turns out to be semi--positive. It is shown that in the case where X is a smooth complex projective variety, the Kaehler form is the Chern form of a Quillen metric on a certain determinant line bundle.

Torelli theorem for the moduli space of framed bundles

Let X be an irreducible smooth complex projective curve of genus g>2, and let x be a fixed point. A framed bundle is a pair (E,ϕ), where E is a vector bundle over X, of rank r and degree d, and ϕ:E_x\to C^r is a non-zero homomorphism. There is a notion of (semi)stability for framed bundles depending on a parameter τ>0, which gives rise to the moduli space of τ-semistable framed bundles M^τ. We prove a Torelli theorem for M^τ, for τ>0 small enough, meaning, the isomorphism class of the one-pointed curve (X,x), and also the integer r, are uniquely determined by the isomorphism class of the variety M^τ.

On the stratified vector bundles

The stratified vector bundles on a smooth variety defined over an algebraically closed field $k$ form a neutral Tannakian category over $k$. We investigate the affine group--scheme corresponding to this neutral Tannakian category.

Parabolic principal Higgs bundles

In ``Ramified G-bundles as parabolic bundles'' (J. Ramanujan Math. Soc. (2003) Vol. 18) with Balaji and Nagaraj we introduced the ramified principal bundles. The aim here is to define the Higgs bundles in the ramified context.

Generalization of a criterion for semistable vector bundles

It is known that a vector bundle E on a smooth projective curve Y defined over an algebraically closed field is semistable if and only if there is a vector bundle F on Y such that the cohomologies of E\otimes F vanish. We extend this criterion for semistability to vector bundles on curves defined over perfect fields. Let X be a geometrically irreducible smooth projective curve defined over a perfect field k, and let E be a vector bundle on X. We prove that E is semistable if and only if there is a vector bundle F on $X$ such that the cohomologies of E\otimes F vanish. We also give an explicit bound for the rank of $F$.

On some Moduli spaces of stable vector bundles on cubic and quartic threefolds

We study certain moduli spaces of stable vector bundles of rank two on cubic and quartic threefolds. In many cases under consideration, it turns out that the moduli space is complete and irreducible and a general member has vanishing intermediate cohomology. In one case, all except one component of the moduli space has such vector bundles.

Automorphisms of curves fixing the order two points of the Jacobian

Let X be an irreducible smooth projective curve, of genus at least two, defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic different from two. If X admits a nontrivial automorphism σthat fixes pointwise all the order two points of Pic}^0(X), then we prove that X is hyperelliptic with σbeing the unique hyperelliptic involution. As a corollary, if a nontrivial automorphisms σ' of X fixes pointwise all the theta characteristics on X, then X is hyperelliptic with σ' being its hyperelliptic involution.

Yang-Mills equation for stable Higgs sheaves

We establish a Kobayashi-Hitchin correspondence for the stable Higgs sheaves on a compact Kaehler manifold. Using it, we also obtain a Kobayashi-Hitchin correspondence for the stable Higgs G-sheaves, where G is any complex reductive linear algebraic group.

On semistable principal bundles over a complex projective manifold

Let G be a simple linear algebraic group defined over the complex numbers. Fix a proper parabolic subgroup P of G and a nontrivial antidominant character χof P. We prove that a holomorphic principal G-bundle E over a connected complex projective manifold M is semistable and the second Chern class of its adjoint bundle vanishes in rational cohomology if and only if the line bundle over E/P defined by χis numerically effective. Similar results remain valid for principal bundles with a reductive linear algebraic group as the structure group. These generalize an earlier work of Y. Miyaoka where he gave a characterization of semistable vector bundles over a smooth projective curve. Using these characterizations one can also produce similar criteria for the semistability of parabolic principal bundles over a compact Riemann surface.

On the rational homotopy type of a moduli space of vector bundles over a curve

We study the rational homotopy of the moduli space ${\mathcal N}_X$ of stable vector bundles of rank two and fixed determinant of odd degree over a compact connected Riemann surface $X$ of genus $g\geq 2$. The symplectic group $Aut(H_1(X,{\mathbb Z}))=Sp(2g,{\mathbb Z})$ has a natural action on the rational homotopy groups $π_n({\mathcal N}_X) \otimes {\mathbb Q}$. We prove that this action extends to an action of $Sp(2g,{\mathbb C})$ on $π_n({\mathcal N}_X) \otimes {\mathbb C}$. We also show that $π_n({\mathcal N}_X) \otimes {\mathbb C}$ is a non-trivial $Sp(2g,{\mathbb C})$-representation for each $n\geq 2g-1$. In particular, ${\mathcal N}_X$ is a rationally hyperbolic space. In the special case where $g=2$, we compute the leading $Sp(2g,{\mathbb C})$-representation occurring in $π_n({\mathcal N}_X) \otimes {\mathbb C}$, for each $n$.

Parabolic Raynaud bundles

Let X be an irreducible smooth projective curve defined over complex numbers, S= {p_1, p_2,...,p_n} \subset X$ a finite set of closed points and N > 1 a fixed integer. For any pair (r,d) in Z X Z/N, there exists a parabolic vector bundle R_{r,d,*} on X, with parabolic structure over S and all parabolic weights in Z/N, that has the following property: Take any parabolic vector bundle E_* of rank r on X whose parabolic points are contained in S, all the parabolic weights are in Z/N and the parabolic degree is d. Then E_* is parabolic semistable if and only if there is no nonzero parabolic homomorphism from R_{r,d,*} to E_*.

Rational real algebraic models of topological surfaces

Comessatti proved that the set of real points of a rational real algebraic surface is either a nonorientable surface, or the two-sphere, or the torus. Conversely, it is easy to see that all of these surfaces admit a rational real algebraic model. We prove that they admit exactly one rational real algebraic model. This was known earlier only for the two-sphere, torus, projective plane and the Klein bottle.

Comparison of fundamental group schemes of a projective variety and an ample hypersurface

Let $X$ be a smooth projective variety defined over an algebraically closed field, and let $L$ be an ample line bundle over $X$. We prove that for any smooth hypersurface $D$ on $X$ in the complete linear system $| L^{\otimes d}|$, the inclusion map $D\hookrightarrow X$ induces an isomorphism of fundamental group schemes, provided $d$ is sufficiently large and $\dim X \geq 3$. If $\dim X = 2$, and $d$ is sufficiently large, then the induced homomorphism of fundamental group schemes remains surjective. We give an example to show that the homomorphism of fundamental group schemes induced by the inclusion map of a reduced ample curve in a smooth projective surface is not surjective in general.

Supersymmetric states of N=4 Yang-Mills from giant gravitons

Mikhailov has constructed an infinite family of 1/8 BPS D3-branes in AdS(5) x S**5. We regulate Mikhailov's solution space by focussing on finite dimensional submanifolds. Our submanifolds are topologically complex projective spaces with symplectic form cohomologically equal to 2 pi N times the Fubini-Study Kahler class. Upon quantization and removing the regulator we find the Hilbert Space of N noninteracting Bose particles in a 3d Harmonic oscillator, a result previously conjectured by Beasley. This Hilbert Space is isomorphic to the classical chiral ring of 1/8 BPS states in N=4 Yang-Mills theory. We view our result as evidence that the spectrum of 1/8 BPS states in N=4 Yang Mills theory, which is known to jump discontinuously from zero to infinitesimal coupling, receives no further renormalization at finite values of the `t Hooft coupling.

Connections on a parabolic principal bundle, II

In \cite{Bi2} (Canad. Jour. Math. Vol. 58) we defined connections on a parabolic principal bundle. While connections on usual principal bundles are defined as splittings of the Atiyah exact sequence, it was noted in \cite{Bi2} that the Atiyah exact sequence does not generalize to the parabolic principal bundles. Here we show that a twisted version of the Atiyah exact sequence generalize to the context of parabolic principal bundles. For usual principal bundles, giving a splitting of this twisted Atiyah exact sequence is equivalent to giving a splitting of the Atiyah exact sequence. Connections on a parabolic principal bundle can be defined using the generalization of the twisted Atiyah exact sequence.

Monodromy group for a strongly semistable principal bundle over a curve, II

Let $X$ be a geometrically irreducible smooth projective curve defined over a field $k$. Assume that $X$ has a $k$-rational point; fix a $k$-rational point $x\in X$. From these data we construct an affine group scheme ${\mathcal G}_X$ defined over the field $k$ as well as a principal ${\mathcal G}_X$-bundle $E_{{\mathcal G}_X}$ over the curve $X$. The group scheme ${\mathcal G}_X$ is given by a ${\mathbb Q}$--graded neutral Tannakian category built out of all strongly semistable vector bundles over $X$. The principal bundle $E_{{\mathcal G}_X}$ is tautological. Let $G$ be a linear algebraic group, defined over $k$, that does not admit any nontrivial character which is trivial on the connected component, containing the identity element, of the reduced center of $G$. Let $E_G$ be a strongly semistable principal $G$-bundle over $X$. We associate to $E_G$ a group scheme $M$ defined over $k$, which we call the monodromy group scheme of $E_G$, and a principal $M$-bundle $E_M$ over $X$, which we call the monodromy bundle of $E_G$. The group scheme $M$ is canonically a quotient of ${\mathcal G}_X$, and $E_M$ is the extension of structure group of $E_{{\mathcal G}_X}$. The group scheme $M$ is also canonically embedded in the fiber ${\rm Ad}(E_G)_{x}$ over $x$ of the adjoint bundle.
