Torelli theorem for the moduli spaces of connections on a Riemann surface

Let $(X,x_0)$ be any one--pointed compact connected Riemann surface of genus $g$, with $g\geq 3$. Fix two mutually coprime integers $r>1$ and $d$. Let ${\mathcal M}_X$ denote the moduli space parametrizing all logarithmic $\text{SL}(r,{\mathbb C})$--connections, singular over $x_0$, on vector bundles over $X$ of degree $d$. We prove that the isomorphism class of the variety ${\mathcal M}_X$ determines the Riemann surface $X$ uniquely up to an isomorphism, although the biholomorphism class of ${\mathcal M}_X$ is known to be independent of the complex structure of $X$. The isomorphism class of the variety ${\mathcal M}_X$ is independent of the point $x_0 \in X$. A similar result is proved for the moduli space parametrizing logarithmic $\text{GL}(r,{\mathbb C})$--connections, singular over $x_0$, on vector bundles over $X$ of degree $d$.

Stable principal bundles and reduction of structure group

Let $E_G$ be a stable principal $G$--bundle over a compact connected Kaehler manifold, where $G$ is a connected reductive linear algebraic group defined over the complex numbers. Let $H\subset G$ be a complex reductive subgroup which is not necessarily connected, and let $E_H\subset E_G$ be a holomorphic reduction of structure group. We prove that $E_H$ is preserved by the Einstein-Hermitian connection on $E_G$. Using this we show that if $E_H$ is a minimal reductive reduction in the sense that there is no complex reductive proper subgroup of $H$ to which $E_H$ admits a holomorphic reduction of structure group, then $E_H$ is unique in the following sense: For any other minimal reductive reduction $(H', E_{H'})$ of $E_G$, there is some element $g$ of $G$ such that $H'= g^{-1}Hg$ and $E_{H'}= E_Hg$. As an application, we give an affirmative answer to a question of Balaji and Kollár.

Geometry of moduli spaces of Higgs bundles

We construct a Petersson-Weil type Kähler form on the moduli spaces of Higgs bundles over a compact Kähler manifold. A fiber integral formula for this form is proved, from which it follows that the Petersson-Weil form is the curvature of a certain determinant line bundle, equipped with a Quillen metric, on the moduli space of Higgs bundles over a projective manifold. The curvature of the Petersson-Weil Kähler form is computed. We also show that, under certain assumptions, a moduli space of Higgs bundles supports of natural hyper-Kähler structure.

The Jacobian of a nonorientable Klein surface

Using divisors, an analog of the Jacobian for a compact connected nonorientable Klein surface $Y$ is constructed. The Jacobian is identified with the dual of the space of all harmonic real one-forms on $Y$ quotiented by the torsion-free part of the first integral homology of $Y$. Denote by $X$ the double cover of $Y$ given by orientation. The Jacobian of $Y$ is identified with the space of all degree zero holomorphic line bundles $L$ over $X$ with the property that $L$ is isomorphic to $σ^*\bar{L}$, where $σ$ is the involution of $X$.

Symplectic Structures on Moduli Spaces of Parabolic Higgs Bundles and Hilbert Scheme

Parabolic triples of the form $(E_*,θ,σ)$ are considered, where $(E_*,θ)$ is a parabolic Higgs bundle on a given compact Riemann surface $X$ with parabolic structure on a fixed divisor $S$, and $σ$ is a nonzero section of the underlying vector bundle. Sending such a triple to the Higgs bundle $(E_*,θ)$ a map from the moduli space of stable parabolic triples to the moduli space of stable parabolic Higgs bundles is obtained. The pull back, by this map, of the symplectic form on the moduli space of stable parabolic Higgs bundles will be denoted by $\text{d}Ω'$. On the other hand, there is a map from the moduli space of stable parabolic triples to a Hilbert scheme $\text{Hilb}^δ(Z)$, where $Z$ denotes the total space of the line bundle $K_X\otimes{\mathcal O}_X(S)$, that sends a triple $(E_*,θ,σ)$ to the divisor defined by the section $σ$ on the spectral curve corresponding to the parabolic Higgs bundle $(E_*,θ)$. Using this map and a meromorphic one--form on $\text{Hilb}^δ(Z)$, a natural two--form on the moduli space of stable parabolic triples is constructed. It is shown here that this form coincides with the above mentioned form $\text{d}Ω'$.

Theta Functions and Szegö Kernels

We study relations between two fundamental constructions associated to vector bundles on a smooth complex projective curve: the theta function (a section of a line bundle on the moduli space of vector bundles) and the Szegö kernel (a section of a vector bundle on the square of the curve). Two types of relations are demonstrated. First, we establish a higher--rank version of the prime form, describing the pullback of determinant line bundles by difference maps, and show the theta function pulls back to the determinant of the Szegö kernel. Next, we prove that the expansion of the Szegö kernel at the diagonal gives the logarithmic derivative of the theta function over the moduli space of bundles for a fixed, or moving, curve. In particular, we recover the identification of the space of connections on the theta line bundle with moduli space of flat vector bundles, when the curve is fixed. When the curve varies, we identify this space of connections with the moduli space of {\em extended connections}, which we introduce.

Opers and Theta Functions

We construct natural maps (the Klein and Wirtinger maps) from moduli spaces of vector bundles on an algebraic curve $X$ to affine spaces, as quotients of the nonabelian theta linear series. We prove a finiteness result for these maps over generalized Kummer varieties (moduli of torus bundles), leading us to conjecture that the maps are finite in general. The conjecture provides canonical explicit coordinates on the moduli space. The finiteness results give low--dimensional parametrizations of Jacobians (in $\Pp^{3g-3}$ for generic curves), described by $2Θ$ functions or second logarithmic derivatives of theta. We interpret the Klein and Wirtinger maps in terms of opers on $X$. Opers are generalizations of projective structures, and can be considered as differential operators, kernel functions or special bundles with connection. The matrix opers (analogues of opers for matrix differential operators) combine the structures of flat vector bundle and projective connection, and map to opers via generalized Hitchin maps. For vector bundles off the theta divisor, the Szegö kernel gives a natural construction of matrix oper. The Wirtinger map from bundles off the theta divisor to the affine space of opers is then defined as the determinant of the Szegö kernel. This generalizes the Wirtinger projective connections associated to theta characteristics, and the assoicated Klein bidifferentials.

A Torelli theorem for the moduli space of Higgs bundles on a curve

Let X be a smooth projective complex curve, and let M be the moduli space of stable Higgs bundles on X (with genus g>1), with rank n and fixed determinant ξ, with n and deg(ξ) coprime. Let X' and ξ' be another such curve and line bundle, and M' the corresponding moduli space. We prove that if M and M' are isomorphic as algebraic varieties, then X and X' are isomorphic.

Nakano positivity and the L2-metric on the direct image of an adjoint positive line bundle

We prove that the $L^2$ metric on the direct image of an adjoint positive line bundle by a locally trivial submersion between projective manifolds is Nakano positive, under the assumption that the typical fiber has zero first Betti number. As a consequence, we get that the symmetric powers of an ample vector bundle tensorized by its determinant are Nakano positive, in particular Griffiths positive. This in turn gives vanishing theorems and an analytic characterization of ample vector bundles.

Infinitesimal deformations of a Calabi-Yau hypersurface of the moduli space of stable vector bundles over a curve

Let $X$ be a compact connected Riemann surface of genus $g$, with $g\geq 2$, and ${\cal M}_ξ$ a smooth moduli space of fixed determinant semistable vector bundles of rank $n$, with $n\geq 2$, over $X$. Take a smooth anticanonical divisor $D$ on ${\cal M}_ξ$. So $D$ is a Calabi-Yau variety. We compute the number of moduli of $D$, namely $\dim H^1(D, T_D)$, to be $3g-4 + \dim H^0({\cal M}_ξ, K^{-1}_{{\cal M}_ξ})$. Denote by $\cal N$ the moduli space of all such pairs $(X',D')$, namely $D'$ is a smooth anticanonical divisor on a smooth moduli space of semistable vector bundles over the Riemann surface $X'$. It turns out that the Kodaira-Spencer map from the tangent space to $\cal N$, at the point represented by the pair $(X,D)$, to $H^1(D, T_D)$ is an isomorphism. This is proved under the assumption that if $g =2$, then $n\neq 2,3$, and if $g=3$, then $n\neq 2$.

Thurston boundary of Teichmüller spaces and the commensurability modular group

If $p : Y \to X$ is an unramified covering map between two compact oriented surfaces of genus at least two, then it is proved that the embedding map, corresponding to $p$, from the Teichmüller space ${\cal T}(X)$, for $X$, to ${\cal T}(Y)$ actually extends to an embedding between the Thurston compactification of the two Teichmüller spaces. Using this result, an inductive limit of Thurston compactified Teichmüller spaces has been constructed, where the index for the inductive limit runs over all possible finite unramified coverings of a fixed compact oriented surface of genus at least two. This inductive limit contains the inductive limit of Teichmüller spaces, constructed in \cite{BNS}, as a subset. The universal commensurability modular group, which was constructed in \cite{BNS}, has a natural action on the inductive limit of Teichmüller spaces. It is proved here that this action of the universal commensurability modular group extends continuously to the inductive limit of Thurston compactified Teichmüller spaces.

Restriction of the Poincaré bundle to a Calabi-Yau hypersurface

Let $\cMx$ be the moduli space of stable vector bundles of rank $n\geq 3$ and determinant $ξ$ over a connected Riemann surface $X$, with $n$ and $d(ξ)$ coprime. Let $D$ be a Calabi-Yau hypersurface of $\cMx$. Denote by $U_D$ the restriction of the universal bundle to $X\times D$. It is shown that the restriction $(U_D)_x$ to $x\times D$ is stable, for any $x\in X$. Furthermore, for a general curve the connected component of the moduli space of semistable sheaves over $D$, containing $(U_D)_x$, is isomorphic to $X$. It is also shown that $U_D$ is stable for any polarisation, and the connected component of the moduli space of semistable sheaves over $X\times D$, containing $U_D$, is isomorphic to the Jacobian. Moreover, this is an isomorphism of polarised varieties, and hence such a moduli spaces determine the Reimann surface.

Limit constructions over Riemann surfaces and their parameter spaces, and the commensurability group actions

To any compact hyperbolic Riemann surface $X$, we associate a new type of automorphism group -- called its *commensurability automorphism group*, $ComAut(X)$. The members of $ComAut(X)$ arise from closed circuits, starting and ending at $X$, where the edges represent holomorphic covering maps amongst compact connected Riemann surfaces (and the vertices represent the covering surfaces). This group turns out to be the isotropy subgroup, at the point represented by $X$ (in $T_{\infty}$), for the action of the universal commensurability modular group on the universal direct limit of Teichmüller spaces, $T_{\infty}$. Now, each point of $T_{\infty}$ represents a complex structure on the universal hyperbolic solenoid. We notice that $ComAut(X)$ acts by holomorphic automorphisms on that complex solenoid. Interestingly, this action turns out to be ergodic (with respect to the natural measure on the solenoid) if and only if the Fuchsian group uniformizing $X$ is *arithmetic*. Furthermore, the action of the commensurability modular group, and of its isotropy subgroups, on some natural vector bundles over $T_{\infty}$, are studied by us.

Weil-Petersson geometry and determinant bundles on inductive limits of moduli spaces

In an earlier paper [Acta Mathematica, v. 176, 1996, 145-169, alg-geom/9505024 ] the present authors and Dennis Sullivan constructed the universal direct system of the classical Teichmüller spaces of Riemann surfaces of varying genus. The direct limit, which we called the universal commensurability Teichmüller space, $T_{infty}$, was shown to carry on it a natural action of the universal commensurability mapping class group, $MC_{\infty}$. In this paper we identify an interesting cofinal sub-system corresponding to the tower of finite-sheeted characteristic coverings over any fixed base surface. Utilizing a certain subgroup inside $MC_{\infty}$, (associated intimately to the inverse system of characteristic coverings), we can now descend to an inductive system of moduli spaces, and construct the direct limit ind-variety $M_{\infty}$. Invoking curvature properties of Quillen metrics on determinant bundles, and naturality under finite coverings of Weil-Petersson forms, we are able to construct on $M_{\infty}$ the natural sequence of determinant of cohomology line bundles, as well as the Mumford isomorphisms connecting these.

Projective structures on a Riemann surface

For a compact Riemann surface $X$ of any genus $g$, let $L$denote the line bundle $K_{X\times X}\otimes {\cal O}_{X\times X}(2Δ)$ on $X\times X$, where $K_{X\times X}$ is the canonical bundle of $X\times X$ and $Δ$ is the diagonal divisor. We show that $L$ has a canonical trivialisation over the nonreduced divisor $2Δ$. Our main result is that the space of projective structures on $X$ is canonically identified with the space of all trivialisations of $L$ over $3Δ$ which restrict to the canonical trivialisation of $L$ over $2Δ$ mentioned above. We give a direct identification of this definition of a projective structure with a definition of Deligne. We also describe briefly the origin of this work in the study of the so-called "Sugawara form" of the energy-momentum tensor in a conformal quantum field theory.

A remark on the jet bundles over the projective line

This is a footnote of a recent interesting work of Cohen, Manin and Zagier, where they, among other things, produce a natural isomorphism between the sheaf of (n-1)-th order jets of the n-th tensor power of the tangent bundle of a Riemann surface equipped with a projective structure and the sheaf of differential operators of order n (on the trivial bundle) with vanishing 0-th order part. We give a different proof of this result without using the coordinates, and following the idea of this proof we prove: Take a line bundle L with $L^2 = T$ on a Riemann surface equipped with a projective structure. Then the jet bundle $J^n(L^n)$ has a natural flat connection with $J^n(L^n) = S^n(J^1(L))$. For any $m >n$ the obvious surjection $J^m(L^n) \rightarrow J^n(L^n)$ has a canonical splitting. In particular, taking $m = n+1$, one gets a natural differential operator of order $n+1$ from $L^n$ to $L^{-n-2}$.
