Finite-dimensional approximations for C*-algebras of product systems

We study C*-algebras generated by representations of product systems over unital subsemigroups of amenable discrete groups. In the first part, we show that exactness of the generated C*-algebra is equivalent to exactness of the cores over the constructible ideals. Nuclearity of the generated C*-algebra is equivalent to nuclear embeddability of the cores in the fixed point algebra. In the second part, we further study injective equivariant Fock covariant representations, and whether the properties of the cores are inherited from properties of the coefficient C*-algebra, as in the case of compactly aligned saturated product systems over right LCM semigroups. If the semigroup is finitely aligned and the product system is saturated and compactly aligned, then exactness of the cores is equivalent to exactness of the coefficient C*-algebra. If in addition the semigroup is strongly finitely aligned, then nuclear embeddability of the cores is equivalent to nuclear embeddability of the coefficient C*-algebra. These results do not hold without the compact alignment hypothesis, even for right LCM semigroups.

The reduced Hao-Ng isomorphism problem for product systems

We prove that the reduced Hao-Ng isomorphism problem has an affirmative answer for every generalised gauge action of a locally compact Hausdorff group on a product system over a unital subsemigroup of a discrete group, without any assumptions on the product system or the subsemigroup. We show that the Fock C*-algebra of the induced product system is canonically isomorphic to the reduced crossed product of the Fock C*-algebra, by identifying the Fock space of the induced product system with the reduced crossed product of the Fock space. This also yields the corresponding completely isometric isomorphism for the tensor algebras. Using the representations of the fixed point algebra that detect Sehnem's strong covariance relations, we show that the canonical representation of the induced product system in the reduced crossed product of the reduced strong covariant C*-algebra is strong covariant.

Morita equivalence for quantum graphs

We introduce an operator-algebraic framework for Morita equivalence of quantum graphs based on $Δ$-equivalence of operator systems introduced by Eleftherakis, Kakariadis and Todorov. Adopting the perspective of Weaver, we view quantum graphs as quantum relations, that is, operator systems endowed with a bimodule structure over the commutant of a von Neumann algebra. Within this framework, we show that two irreducibly acting quantum graphs are Morita equivalent if and only if they are both full pullbacks of a common quantum graph. This extends a result of Eleftherakis, Kakariadis and Todorov for graph operator systems to the quantum graph setting. In passing we construct a true-twin reduction analogue for an irreducibly acting quantum graph. We further characterise the case where we have simultaneous TRO-equivalence of the quantum graphs and their associated algebras, thus giving a second, stronger notion of Morita equivalence. In the special case of noncommutative graphs, corresponding to the zero-error quantum communication setting, the two notions coincide and we obtain a characterisation in terms of strong co-homomorphisms of noncommutative graphs. Finally, we show that connectivity, the independence number, Shannon capacity, quantum complexity and subcomplexity, Haemers bound, and the Lovász number are invariant under Morita equivalence.

On the embeddings of selfadjoint operator spaces

We investigate when a map on a selfadjoint operator space $E$ is an embedding, i.e., when its unitisation in the sense of Werner is completely isometric. Combining with results of Russell, of Ng, and of Dessi, the second and the last author, it is shown that this is equivalent to: (a) extending bounded positive functionals on each matrix level with the same norm; (b) extending quasistates to quasistates in each matrix level; (c) extending completely bounded completely positive maps with the same cb-norm; and (d) the map being a gauge maximal isometry in the sense of Russell. If $E$ is approximately positively generated and $\mathrm{C}^*(E)$ is unital, or if $E_{sa}$ is singly generated, then completely positive maps on $E \subseteq \mathcal{B}(H)$ have completely positive extensions on $\mathrm{C}^*(E)$, but possibly not with the same cb-norm; and this is not enough for the inclusion $E \subseteq \mathrm{C}^*(E)$ to be an embedding. We show that the inclusion $E \subseteq \mathrm{C}^*(E)$ is always an embedding when $E$ is completely approximately 1-generated, and we fully resolve the case when $E_{sa}$ is singly generated. Combining with the works of Salomon, Humeniuk--Kennedy--Manor, and previous work of the third author, we show that if the inclusion $E \subseteq \mathrm{C}^*(E)$ is an embedding, then rigidity at zero, in the sense of Salomon, coincides with $E$ being approximately positively generated. Consequently, we show that $E$ is approximately positively generated if and only if $M_n(E)$ is approximately positively generated for all $n\in \mathbb{N}$, thus extending a previous result of Humeniuk--Kennedy--Manor to the approximation setting. As an application we show that hyperrigidity of $E$ in $\mathrm{C}^*(E)$ allows to identify $\mathrm{C}^*(E)$ as the C*-envelope of $E$ in several (non-unital) contexts.

On hyperrigidity and non-degenerate C*-correspondences

We revisit the results of Kim, and of Katsoulis and Ramsey concerning hyperrigidity for non-degenerate C*-correspondences. We show that the tensor algebra is hyperrigid, if and only if Katsura's ideal acts non-degenerately, if and only if Katsura's ideal acts non-degenerately under any representation. This gives a positive answer to the question of Katsoulis and Ramsey, showing that their necessary condition and their sufficient condition for hyperrigidity of the tensor algebra are equivalent. Non-degeneracy of the left action of Katsura's ideal was also shown by Kim to be equivalent to hyperrigidity for the selfadjoint operator space associated with the C*-correspondence, and our approach provides a simplified proof of this result as well. In the process we study unitisations of selfadjoint operator spaces in the sense of Werner, and revisit Arveson's criterion connecting maximality with the unique extension property and hyperrigidity, in conjunction with the work of Salomon on generating sets.

On Fock covariance for product systems and the reduced Hao-Ng isomorphism problem by discrete actions

We provide a characterisation of equivariant Fock covariant injective representations for product systems. We show that this characterisation coincides with Nica covariance for compactly aligned product systems over right LCM semigroups of Kwaśniewski and Larsen, and with the Toeplitz representations of a discrete monoid of Laca and Sehnem. By combining with the framework established by Katsoulis and Ramsey, we resolve the reduced Hao-Ng isomorphism problem for generalised gauge actions by discrete groups.
