A monad measure space for logarithmic density

We provide a framework for proofs of structural theorems about sets with positive Banach logarithmic density. For example, we prove that if $A\subseteq \mathbb{N}$ has positive Banach logarithmic density, then $A$ contains an approximate geometric progression of any length. We also prove that if $A,B\subseteq \mathbb{N}$ have positive Banach logarithmic density, then there are arbitrarily long intervals whose gaps on $A\cdot B$ are multiplicatively bounded, a multiplicative version Jin's sumset theorem. The main technical tool is the use of a quotient of a Loeb measure space with respect to a multiplicative cut.

Games and elementary equivalence of $\rm II_1$ factors

We use Ehrenfeucht-Fraïssé games to give a local geometric criterion for elementary equivalence of II$_1$ factors. We obtain as a corollary that two II$_1$ factors are elementarily equivalent if and only their unitary groups are elementarily equivalent as $\mathbb Z_4$-metric spaces.

On Kirchberg's Embedding Problem

Kirchberg's Embedding Problem (KEP) asks whether every separable C$^*$ algebra embeds into an ultrapower of the Cuntz algebra $\mathcal{O}_2$. In this paper, we use model theory to show that this conjecture is equivalent to a local approximate nuclearity condition that we call the existence of good nuclear witnesses. In order to prove this result, we study general properties of existentially closed C$^*$ algebras. Along the way, we establish a connection between existentially closed C$^*$ algebras, the weak expectation property of Lance, and the local lifting property of Kirchberg. The paper concludes with a discussion of the model theory of $\mathcal{O}_2$. Several results in this last section are proven using some technical results concerning tubular embeddings, a notion first introduced by Jung for studying embeddings of tracial von Neumann algebras into the ultrapower of the hyperfinite II$_1$ factor.

Independence relations in randomizations

The randomization of a complete first order theory $T$ is the complete continuous theory $T^R$ with two sorts, a sort for random elements of models of $T$, and a sort for events in an underlying probability space. We study various notions of independence in models of $T^R$.

On a sumset conjecture of Erdős

Erdős conjectured that for any set $A\subseteq \mathbb{N}$ with positive lower asymptotic density, there are infinite sets $B,C\subseteq \mathbb{N}$ such that $B+C\subseteq A$. We verify Erdős' conjecture in the case that $A$ has Banach density exceeding $\frac{1}{2}$. As a consequence, we prove that, for $A\subseteq \mathbb{N}$ with positive Banach density (a much weaker assumption than positive lower density), we can find infinite $B,C\subseteq \mathbb{N}$ such that $B+C$ is contained in the union of $A$ and a translate of $A$. Both of the aforementioned results are generalized to arbitrary countable amenable groups. We also provide a positive solution to Erdős' conjecture for subsets of the natural numbers that are pseudorandom.

High density piecewise syndeticity of sumsets

Renling Jin proved that if A and B are two subsets of the natural numbers with positive Banach density, then A+B is piecewise syndetic. In this paper, we prove that, under various assumptions on positive lower or upper densities of A and B, there is a high density set of witnesses to the piecewise syndeticity of A+B. Most of the result are shown to hold more generally for subsets of Z^d. The key technical tool is a Lebesgue density theorem for measure spaces induced by cuts in the nonstandard integers.

Existentially closed II_1 factors

We examine the properties of existentially closed (R^omega-embeddable) II_1 factors. In particular, we use the fact that every automorphism of an existentially closed (R^omega-embeddable) II_1 factor is approximately inner to prove that Th(R) is not model-complete. We also show that Th(R) is complete for both finite and infinite forcing and use the latter result to prove that there exist continuum many nonisomorphic existentially closed models of Th(R).

A computability-theoretic reformulation of the Connes Embedding Problem

The Connes Embedding Problem (CEP) asks whether every separable II_1 factor embeds into an ultrapower of the hyperfinite II_1 factor. We show that the CEP is equivalent to the computability of the universal theory of every type II_1 von Neumann algebra. We also derive some further computability-theoretic consequences of the CEP.

Definable closure in randomizations

The randomization of a complete first order theory T is the complete continuous theory T^R with two sorts, a sort for random elements of models of T, and a sort for events in an underlying probability space. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for an element to be definable over a set of parameters in a model of T^R.

Amalgamating R^ω-embeddable von Neumann algebras

We observe how a classical model-theoretic fact proves the existence of many strong amalgamation bases for the class of R^ω-embeddable von Neumann algebras, where R is the hyperfinite II_1 factor. In particular, we shows that R itself is a strong amalgamation base.

An approximate logic for measures

We present a logical framework for formalizing connections between finitary combinatorics and measure theory or ergodic theory that have appeared various places throughout the literature. We develop the basic syntax and semantics of this logic and give applications, showing that the method can express the classic Furstenberg correspondence and to give a short proof of the Szemerédi Regularity Lemma. We also derive some connections between the model-theoretic notion of stability and the Gowers uniformity norms from combinatorics.

The theory of tracial von Neumann algebras does not have a model companion

In this note, we show that the theory of tracial von Neumann algebras does not have a model companion. This will follow from the fact that the theory of any locally universal, McDuff II_1 factor does not have quantifier elimination. We also show how a positive solution to the Connes Embedding Problem implies that there can be no model-complete theory of II_1 factors.

Transseries and Todorov-Vernaeve's asymptotic fields

We study the relationship between fields of transseries and residue fields of convex subrings of non-standard extensions of the real numbers. This was motivated by a question of Todorov and Vernaeve, answered in this paper.

The fundamental group of a locally finite graph with ends: a hyperfinite approach

The end compactification |Γ| of the locally finite graph Γis the union of the graph and its ends, endowed with a suitable topology. We show that π_1(|Γ|) embeds into a nonstandard free group with hyperfinitely many generators, i.e. an ultraproduct of finitely generated free groups, and that the embedding we construct factors through an embedding into an inverse limit of free groups, recovering a result of Diestel and Sprüssel.

Nonstandard hulls of locally uniform groups

We present a nonstandard hull construction for locally uniform groups in a spirit similar to Luxembourg's construction of the nonstandard hull of a uniform space. Our nonstandard hull is a local group rather than a global group. We investigate how this construction varies as one changes the family of pseudometrics used to construct the hull. We use the nonstandard hull construction to give a nonstandard characterization of Enflo's notion of groups that are uniformly free from small subgroups. We prove that our nonstandard hull is locally isomorphic to Pestov's nonstandard hull for Banach-Lie groups. We also give some examples of infinite-dimensional Lie groups that are locally uniform.

Pseudofinite and pseudocompact metric structures

We initiate the study of pseudofiniteness in continuous logic. We introduce a related concept, namely that of pseudocompactness, and investigate the relationship between the two concepts. We establish some basic properties of pseudofiniteness and pseudocompactness and provide many examples. We also investigate the injective-surjective phenomenon for definable endofunctions in pseudofinite structures.

An approximate Herbrand's theorem and definable functions in metric structures

We develop a version of Herbrand's theorem for continuous logic and use it to prove that definable functions in infinite-dimensional Hilbert spaces are piecewise approximable by affine functions. We obtain similar results for definable functions in Hilbert spaces expanded by a group of generic unitary operators and Hilbert spaces expanded by a generic subspace. We also show how Herbrand's theorem can be used to characterize definable functions in some absolutely ubiquitous structures from classical logic.
