Definable Operators on Hilbert Spaces

Let H be an infinite-dimensional (real or complex) Hilbert space, viewed as a metric structure in its natural signature. We characterize the definable linear operators on H as exactly the "scalar plus compact" operators.

Ends of groups: a nonstandard perspective

We give a nonstandard treatment of the notion of ends of proper geodesic metric spaces. We then apply this nonstandard treatment to Cayley graphs of finitely generated groups and give nonstandard proofs of many of the fundamental results concerning ends of groups. We end with an analogous nonstandard treatment of the ends of relatively Cayley graphs, that is Cayley graphs of cosets of finitely generated groups.

Definable Functions in Urysohn's Metric Space

Let U denote the Urysohn sphere and consider U as a metric structure in the empty continuous signature. We prove that every definable function from U^n to U is either a projection function or else has relatively compact range. As a consequence, we prove that many functions natural to the study of the Urysohn sphere are not definable. We end with further topological information on the range of the definable function in case it is compact.

Thorn-Forking in Continuous Logic

We study thorn forking and rosiness in the context of continuous logic. We prove that the Urysohn sphere is rosy (with respect to finitary imaginaries), providing the first example of an essentially continuous unstable theory with a nice notion of independence. In the process, we show that a real rosy theory which has weak elimination of finitary imaginaries is rosy with respect to finitary imaginaries, a fact which is new even for classical real rosy theories.

Hilbert's Fifth Problem for Local Groups

We solve Hilbert's fifth problem for local groups: every locally euclidean local group is locally isomorphic to a Lie group. Jacoby claimed a proof of this in 1957, but this proof is seriously flawed. We use methods from nonstandard analysis and model our solution after a treatment of Hilbert's fifth problem for global groups by Hirschfeld.

Locally Compact Contractive Local Groups

We study locally compact contractive local groups, that is, locally compact local groups with a contractive pseudo-automorphism. We prove that if such an object is locally connected, then it is locally isomorphic to a Lie group. We also prove a related structure theorem for locally compact contractive local groups which are not necessarily locally connected. These results are local analogues of theorems for locally compact contractive groups.

Nonstandard Hulls of Locally Exponential Lie Algebras

We show how to construct the nonstandard hull of certain infinite-dimensional Lie algebras in order to generalize a theorem of Pestov on the enlargeability of Banach-Lie algebras. In the process, we consider a nonstandard smoothness condition on functions between locally convex spaces to ensure that the induced function between the nonstandard hulls is smooth. We also discuss some conditions on a function between locally convex spaces which guarantee that its nonstandard extension maps finite points to finite points.
