Dissipative flows of 2D foams

We analyze the flow of a liquid foam between two plates separated by a gap of the order of the bubble size (2D foam). We concentrate on the salient features of the flow that are induced by the presence, in an otherwise monodisperse foam, of a single large bubble whose size is one order of magnitude larger than the average size. We describe a model suited for numerical simulations of flows of 2D foams made up of a large number of bubbles. The numerical results are successfully compared to analytical predictions based on scaling arguments and on continuum medium approximations. When the foam is pushed inside the cell at a controlled rate, two basically different regimes occur: a plug flow is observed at low flux whereas, above a threshold, the large bubble migrates faster than the mean flow. The detailed characterization of the relative velocity of the large bubble is the essential aim of the present paper. The relative velocity values, predicted both from numerical and from analytical calculations that are discussed here in great detail, are found to be in fair agreement with experimental results.

Dynamics and Topological Aspects of a Reconstructed Two-Dimensional Foam Time Series Using Potts Model on a Pinned Lattice

We discuss a method to reconstruct an approximate two-dimensional foam structure from an incomplete image using the extended Potts mode with a pinned lattice we introduced in a previous paper. The initial information consists of the positions of the vertices only. We locate the centers of the bubbles using the Euclidean distance-map construction and assign at each vertex position a continuous pinning field with a potential falling off as $1/r$. We nucleate a bubble at each center using the extended Potts model and let the structure evolve under the constraint of scaled target areas until the bubbles contact each other. The target area constraint and pinning centers prevent further coarsening. We then turn the area constraint off and let the edges relax to a minimum energy configuration. The result is a reconstructed structure very close to the simulation. We repeated this procedure for various stages of the coarsening of the same simulated foam and investigated the simulation and reconstruction dynamics, topology and area distribution, finding that they agree to good accuracy.

Vesicle propulsion in haptotaxis : a local model

We study theoretically vesicle locomotion due to haptotaxis. Haptotaxis is referred to motion induced by an adhesion gradient on a substrate. The problem is solved within a local approximation where a Rayleigh-type dissipation is adopted. The dynamical model is akin to the Rousse model for polymers. A powerful gauge-field invariant formulation is used to solve a dynamical model which includes a kind of dissipation due to bond breaking/restoring with the substrate. For a stationary situation where the vesicle acquires a constant drift velocity, we formulate the propulsion problem in terms of a nonlinear eigenvalue (the a priori unknown drift velocity) one of Barenblat-Zeldovitch type. A counting argument shows that the velocity belongs to a discrete set. For a relatively tense vesicle, we provide an analytical expression for the drift velocity as a function of relevant parameters. We find good agreement with the full numerical solution. Despite the oversimplification of the model it allows the identification of a relevant quantity, namely the adhesion length, which turns out to be crucial also in the nonlocal model in the presence of hydrodynamics, a situation on which we have recently reported [I. Cantat, and C. Misbah, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 83}, 235 (1999)] and which constitutes the subject of a forthcoming extensive study.
