Lattice QCD Spectra at Finite Temperature: a Random Matrix Approach

We suggest that the lattice Dirac spectra in QCD at finite temperature may be understood using a gaussian unitary ensemble for Wilson fermions, and a chiral gaussian unitary ensemble for Kogut-Susskind fermions. For Kogut-Susskind fermions, the lattice results by the Columbia group are in good agreement with the spectral distribution following from a cubic equation, both for the valence quark distribution and the anomalous symmetry breaking. We explicitly construct a number of Dirac spectra for Wilson fermions at finite temperature, and use the end-point singularities to derive analytically the pertinent critical lines. For the physical current masses, the matrix model shows a transition from a delocalized phase at low temperature, to a localized phase at high temperature. The localization is over the thermal wavelength of the quark modes. For heavier masses, the spectral distribution reflects on localized states with competitive effects between the quark Compton wavelength and the thermal wavelength. Some further suggestions for lattice simulations are made.

Dilepton and Photon Emission Rates from a Hadronic Gas

We analyze the dilepton and photon emission rates from a hadronic gas using chiral reduction formulas and a virial expansion. The emission rates are reduced to pertinent vacuum correlation functions, most of which can be assessed from experiment. Our results indicate that in the low mass region, the dilepton and photon rates are enhanced compared to most of the calculations using chiral Lagrangians. The enhancement is further increased through a finite pion chemical potential. An estimate of the emission rates is also made using Haag's expansion for the electromagnetic current. The relevance of these results to dilepton and photon emission rates in heavy-ion collisions is discussed.

The Pion-Nucleon Sigma Term and the Goldberger-Treiman Discrepancy

The pion-nucleon sigma term is shown to be equal to the Goldberger-Treiman discrepancy at tree level. Its value estimated this way is very sensitive to the pion-nucleon coupling constant g_{pi NN}. This relation, when combined with the pion-nucleon S-wave scattering lengths, yields a new determination of g_{pi NN} at tree level. The results of a one-loop analysis are also summarized determining an allowed range for the induced pseudoscalar coupling constant g_P.

BRST Quantization, Strong CP Violation, the U(1) Problem and $θ$ Vacua

The non-perturbative implications of BRST quantization are examined for $θ$ vacua and related issues. Strong CP violation is shown to be absent for QCD in the BRST formalism. Previous evidence for CP violation is reexamined, and much of it is found to be inconclusive. It is proposed that some lattice calculations be redone to clarify the situation. For the U(1) problem, difficulties are encountered for a conventional solution within the BRST framework. We also find problems with previous instanton and non-instanton approaches.

Master Formula Approach to Chiral Symmetry Breaking: Pi-Pi scattering

The master formula approach to chiral symmetry breaking is used to analyze the phase shifts for $ππ$ scattering in the elastic region. The results are in excellent agreement with the data for the phase shifts up to the K-K bar threshold. Our analysis shows that the pi-pi data near threshold in the scalar channel favors a large quark condensate in the vacuum, i.e. \sim -(240 MeV)^3.

General Correlation Functions in the Schwinger Model at Zero and Finite Temperature

The general correlations between massless fermions are calculated in the Schwinger model at arbitrary temperature. The zero temperature calculations on the plane are reviewed and clarified. Then the finite temperature fermionic Green's function is computed and the results on the torus are compared to those on the plane. It is concluded that a simpler way to calculate the finite temperature results is to associate certain terms in the zero temperature structure with their finite temperature counterparts.

The Invariant Fermion Correlator in the Schwinger Model on the Torus

We construct the gauge invariant fermion correlator in the Schwinger model on the torus. At zero temperature, this correlator falls off with a rate given by the Coulomb energy of an infinitely heavy charge. At high temperature, the screening mass approaches $πT/2$, and this in the presence of a mass gap. The fractional Matsubara frequency arises from the action of a pair of induced merons at high temperature that are localized over a range on the order of the meson Compton wavelength $1/m=\sqrtπ/g$. We discuss the quenched approximation in this model, and comment on the possible relevance of some of these results to higher dimensions.

Scattering in Soliton Models and the Bosonic Exchange description

We argue that the description of meson-nucleon dynamics based on the boson-exchange approach, is compatible with the description of the nucleon as a soliton in the nonrelativistic limit. Our arguments are based on an analysis of the meson-soliton form factor and the exact meson-soliton and soliton-soliton scattering amplitudes in the Sine-Gordon model.
