Randall-Sundrum brane cosmology: modification of late-time cosmic dynamics by exotic matter

In this paper we show, through the study of concrete examples, that, depending on the cosmic dynamics of the energy density of matter degrees of freedom living in the brane, Randall-Sundrum (RS) brane effects can be important not only at short distances (UV regime), but also at large cosmological scales (IR regime). Our first example relies on the study, by means of the dynamical systems tools, of a toy model based in a non-linear electrodynamics (NLED) Lagrangian. Then we show that other, less elaborated models, such as the inclusion of a scalar phantom field, and of a tachyon phantom field -- trapped in the brane -- produce similar results. The form of the RS correction seems to convert what would have been future attractors in general relativity into saddle points. The above "mixing of scales" effect is distinctive only of theories that modify the right-hand-side (matter part) of the Friedmann equation, so that, for instance, DGP-brane models do not show this feature.

Conformal transformations and the conformal equivalence principle

It is demonstrated that, unless the meaning of conformal transformations for the underlying geometrical structure is discussed on a same footing as it is done for the equations of the given gravity theory, the notion of "conformal equivalence", as it has been mostly used in the bibliography to date, lacks physical and mathematical content. A principle of conformal equivalence is then formulated and its consequences are investigated within a conformally invariant modification of Brans-Dicke (BD) theory of gravity. It is also demonstrated that vacuum BD theory ($ω\neq -3/2$) is not conformally invariant and, consequently, the different conformal frames in which the theory can be formulated are just different - conformally related - representations of a same phenomenon. Hence these can not be compared: either both are physically correct, or none is it.

Can noncommutative effects account for the present speed up of the cosmic expansion?

In this paper we investigate to which extent noncommutativity, a intrinsically quantum property, may influence the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker cosmological dynamics at late times/large scales. To our purpose it will be enough to explore the asymptotic properties of the cosmological model in the phase space. Our recipe to build noncommutativity into our model is based in the approach of reference [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 88} (2002) 161301], and can be summarized in the following steps: i) the Hamiltonian is derived from the Einstein-Hilbert action (plus a self-interacting scalar field action) for a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker spacetime with flat spatial sections, ii) canonical quantization recipe is applied, i. e., the minisuperspace variables are promoted to operators, and the WDW equation is written in terms of these variables, iii) noncommutativity in the minisuperspace is achieved through the replacement of the standard product of functions by the Moyal star product in the WDW equation, and, finally, iv) semi-classical cosmological equations are obtained by means of the WKB approximation applied to the (equivalent) modified Hamilton-Jacobi equation. We demonstrate, indeed, that noncommutative effects of the kind considered here, can be those responsible for the present speed up of the cosmic expansion.

Dirac-Born-Infeld Field Trapped in the Braneworld

We apply the dynamical systems tools to study the (linear) cosmic dynamics of a Dirac-Born-Infeld-type field trapped in the braneworld. We focus, exclusively, in Randall-Sundrum and in Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati brane models. We analyze the existence and stability of asymptotic solutions for the AdS throat and the quadratic potential and a particular choice of the warp factor and of the potential for the DBI field ($f(ϕ)=1/V(ϕ)$). It is demonstrated, in particular, that in the ultra-relativistic approximation matter-scaling and scalar field-dominated solutions always arise. In the first scenario the empty universe is the past attractor, while in the second model the past attractor is the matter-dominated phase.

Study Of Tachyon Dynamics For Broad Classes of Potentials

We investigate in detail the asymptotic properties of tachyon cosmology for a broad class of self-interaction potentials. The present approach relies in an appropriate re-definition of the tachyon field, which, in conjunction with a method formerly applied in the bibliography in a different context, allows to generalize the dynamical systems study of tachyon cosmology to a wider class of self-interaction potentials beyond the (inverse) square-law one. It is revealed that independent of the functional form of the potential, the matter-dominated solution and the ultra-relativistic (also matter-dominated) solution, are always associated with equilibrium points in the phase space of the tachyon models. The latter is always the past attractor, while the former is a saddle critical point. For inverse power-law potentials $V\proptoϕ^{-2λ}$ the late-time attractor is always the de Sitter solution, while for sinh-like potentials $V\propto\sinh^{-α}(λϕ)$, depending on the region of parameter space, the late-time attractor can be either the inflationary tachyon-dominated solution or the matter-scaling (also inflationary) phase. In general, for most part of known quintessential potentials, the late-time dynamics will be associated either with de Sitter inflation, or with matter-scaling, or with scalar field-dominated solutions.

Power-Law NLED-Based Magnetic Universe Can Mimic Phantom Behavior

We study the cosmic dynamics of a magnetic universe supported by non-linear electrodynamics (NLED) Lagrangeans that are proportional to powers of the electromagnetic invariant $\propto F^{1/(1-m)}$ ($m$ is an overall constant). For simplicity we focus in the case when $F$ depends on the magnetic field alone, a case dubbed in the bibliography as ''magnetic universe''. Our results demonstrate that, depending on the values of the free parameter $m$, the magnetic field can mimic phantom field behavior, an effect previously found in other contexts. It is demonstrated that, since there are found equilibrium points in the phase space of these models that can be associated with magnetic-dominated past and future attractors, a combination of positive and negative powers of $F$ may lead to interesting cosmological behavior. In particular, a cosmological scenario where the universe might evolve from a past NLED-driven (non-inflationary) state into a future (late-time) -- also NLED-driven -- inflationary stage, transiting through a matter-dominated solution, is envisioned. The impact of braneworld gravity on the dynamics driven by such NLED Lagrangeans is also investigated. It is demonstrated that, due to phantom property at late times, the non-linear electromagnetic effects may play an important role in deciding the fate of the cosmic evolution. Randall-Sundrum brane effects, in particular, modify the nature of the starting point of the cosmic evolution, as well as the fate of the expansion: both, the big bang singularity and the big rip event -- inherent in general relativity with phantom matter source --, may be avoided.

Vacuum Structure of Cosmologically Viable Quadratic Modifications of Gravity that are Functions of the Gauss-Bonnet Invariant

We perform a thorough study of the theoretical consistency of recently proposed, viable, quadratic modifications of gravity that are functions of the the Gauss-Bonnet invariant, regarding the stability of their perturbations around vacuum, maximally symmetric spaces of constant curvature. We pay special attention, in particular, to the investigation of pathological instabilities associated with the occurrence of propagating spin-0 tachyon modes, and with the development of a graviton ghost. The latter effect is associated with the known "Ricci stability" issue, well studied in $f(R)$-theories. Within quadratic modifications of gravity it is discussed for the first time. Special attention is paid to the requirement of non-negativity of the effective gravitational coupling, which warrants that the graviton is not a negative-norm state. It is demonstrated that, several theories that pass the cosmological as well as the solar system tests, have to be rule out on the basis of the unavoidable character of these pathological instabilities.

Does Dirac-Born-Infeld Modification Of Quadratic Theories Really Matter?

We study the consequences of further modification of $f(R,R_{μν} R^{μν}, R_{μνσρ} R^{μνσρ}) / f(R)$-theories by means of the Dirac-Born-Infeld deformation procedure, which amounts to the replacement of $f$ by $λ(\sqrt{1+2f/λ}-1)$ (the free parameter $λ$ fixes an additional energy scale). We pay special attention to the definition of masses of the linearized propagating degrees of freedom since these are important to judge about the stability of the linearization around vacuum background spaces. In this context we discuss the subtleties associated with expanding $f(R,R_{μν} R^{μν},R_{μνσρ} R^{μνσρ})$-Lagrangians around maximally symmetric spaces of constant curvature, as well as with equivalence of the linearized Lagrangian to a scalar-tensor theory. Investigation of the consequences of applying the Dirac-Born-Infeld strategy to further modify quadratic theories, on the stability of de Sitter vacuum, as well as its impact on the cosmological dynamics, is the main concern of this paper.

Asymptotic Properties of a Supposedly Regular (Dirac-Born-Infeld) Modification of General Relativity

We apply the dynamical systems tools to study the asymptotic properties of a cosmological model based on a non-linear modification of General Relativity in which the standard Einstein-Hilbert action is replaced by one of Dirac-Born-Infeld type. It is shown that the dynamics of this model is extremely rich: there are found equilibrium points in the phase space that can be associated with matter-dominated, matter-curvature scaling, de Sitter, and even phantom-like solutions. Depending on the value of the overall parameters the dynamics in phase space can show multi-attractor structure into the future (multiple future attractors may co-exist). This is a consequence of bifurcations in control parameter space, showing strong dependence of the model's dynamical properties on the free parameters. Contrary to what is expected from non-linear modifications of general relativity of this kind, removal of the initial spacetime singularity is not a generic feature of the corresponding cosmological model. Instead, the starting point of the cosmic dynamics -- the past attractor in the phase space -- is a state of infinitely large value of the Hubble rate squared, usually associated with the big bang singularity.

Dynamics of a Self-interacting Scalar Field Trapped in the Braneworld for a Wide Variety of Self-interaction Potentials

We apply the dynamical systems tools to study the linear dynamics of a self-interacting scalar field trapped in the braneworld, for a wide variety of self-interaction potentials. We focus on Randall-Sundrum (RS) and on Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati (DGP) braneworld models exclusively. These models are complementary to each other: while the RS brane produces ultra-violet (UV) corrections to general relativity, the DGP braneworld modifies Einstein's theory at large scales, i. e., produces infra-red (IR) modifications of general relativity. This study of the asymptotic properties of both braneworld models, shows -- in the phase space -- the way the dynamics of a scalar field trapped in the brane departs from standard general relativity behaviour.

A Note on de Sitter Embedding of $f(R)$ Theories

The consequences of the constraints which de Sitter embedding of $f(R)$ theories imposes on the Lagrangian's parameters, are investigated within the metric formalism. It is shown, in particular, that several common $f(R)$ Lagrangians do not actually admit such an embedding. Otherwise, asymptotic matching of local solutions of the corresponding models with background (maximally symmetric) spaces of constant curvature is either unstable or, anti-de Sitter embedding is the only stable embedding. Additional arguments are given in favour of a previous claim that a class of $f(R)$ models comprising both positive and negative powers of $R$ (two different mass scales), could be a nice scenario where to address, in a united picture, both early-time inflation and late-time accelerated expansion of the universe. The approach undertaken here is used, also, to check ghost-freedom of a Dirac-Born-Infeld modification of general relativity previously studied in the bibliography.

Dynamics of Scalar Field Dark Matter With a Cosh-like Potential

The dynamics of a cosmological model fueled by scalar field dark matter with a cosh-like potential plus a cosmological constant is investigated in detail. It is revealed that the late-time attractor is always the de Sitter solution, and that, depending on the values of the free parameters, the oscillating solution of the scalar field -- modeling cold dark matter -- mediates between some early stage (say, the radiation-dominated solution) and the accelerating de Sitter attractor.

Dynamics of FRW Universes Sourced by Non-Linear Electrodynamics

We apply the dynamical systems tools to study the (linear) dynamics of Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universes that are fuelled by non-linear electrodynamics. We focus, mainly, in two particular models. In the first model the cosmic evolution is fuelled by cold dark matter, a cosmological constant and a non-linear electrodynamics field. In the second case non-singular cosmology and late-time accelerated expansion are unified in a model where the Einstein's field equations are sourced only by cold dark matter and a non-linear electrodynamics field. It is shown that, in contrast to previous claims, the cosmological effects coming from the non-linear electrodynamics field are not as generic as though. In fact, critical points in the phase space that could be associated with non-linear electrodynamic effects are not found.

Self accelerating solutions in a DGP brane with a scalar field trapped on it: the dynamical systems perspective

We apply the dynamical systems tools to study the linear dynamics of a self-interacting scalar field trapped on a DGP brane. The simplest kinds of self-interaction potentials are investigated: a) constant potential, and b) exponential potential. It is shown that the dynamics of DGP models can be very rich and complex. One of the most interesting results of this study shows that dynamical screening of the scalar field self-interaction potential, occuring within the Minkowski cosmological phase of the DGP model and mimetizing 4D phantom behaviour, is an attractor solution for a constant self-interaction potential but not for the exponential one. In the latter case gravitational screening is not even a critical point of the corresponding autonomous system of ordinary differential equations.

Self-interacting Scalar Field Trapped in a Randall-Sundrum Braneworld: The Dynamical Systems Perspective

We apply the dynamical systems tools to study the linear dynamics of a self-interacting scalar field trapped on a Randall-Sundrum brane. The simplest kinds of self-interaction potentials are investigated: a) constant potential, and b) exponential potential. It is shown that the dynamics of the Randall-Sundrum model significantly differs from the standard four-dimensional behavior at early times: in all cases of interest the (singular) empty universe is the past attractor for every trajectory in phase space, meanwhile the kinetic energy-dominated solution is always a saddle critical point. The late-time dynamics is not affected by the brane effects.

Critical comments on the paper "Crossing $ω=-1$ by a single scalar field on a Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati brane" by H Zhang and Z-H Zhu [Phys.Rev.D75,023510(2007)]

It is demonstrated that the claim in the paper "Crossing $ω=-1$ by a single scalar field on a Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati brane" by H Zhang and Z-H Zhu [Phys.Rev.D75,023510(2007)], about a prove that there do not exist scaling solutions in a universe with dust in a Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati (DGP) braneworld scenario, is incorrect.

Thick DGP braneworlds

We study Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati braneworlds with finite thickness. In respect to standard (thin) DGP Friedmann equation, finite thickness of the brane causes a subtle modification of the cosmological equations that can lead to significant physical consequences. The resulting cosmology is governed by two length scales which are associated with the brane thickness and with the crossover length respectively. In this setup both early inflation and late-time acceleration of the expansion are a consequence of the 5D geometry. At early times, as well as at late times, 5D effects become dominant (gravity leaks into the extra dimension), while, at intermediate times, gravity is effectively 4D due to non-trivial physics occuring in standard (thin) DGP scenarios.

Exact models with non-minimal interaction between dark matter and (either phantom or quintessence) dark energy

A method for deriving Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) solutions developed in Int. J. Mod. Phys. D{\bf 5}(1996)71-84, is generalized to account for models with non-minimal coupling between the dark energy and the dark matter. New quintessence and phantom (flat) FRW solutions are found. Their physical significance is discussed. Additionally, the aforementioned method is modified so that, "coincidence free" solutions can be readily derived. Besides, we review some aspects of the phantom barrier crossing. In this regard we present a model which is free from the coincidence problem and, at the same time, does the crossing of the phantom barrier $ω=-1$ at late time. Finally, we give additional comments on the non predictive properties of scalar field cosmological models with or without energy transfer.
