Evolution of density perturbations in double exponential quintessence models

In this work we investigate the evolution of matter density perturbations for quintessence models with a self-interaction potential that is a combination of exponentials. One of the models is based on the Einstein theory of gravity, while the other is based on the Brans-Dicke scalar tensor theory. We constrain the parameter space of the models using the determinations for the growth rate of perturbations derived from data of the 2-degree Field Galaxy Redshift Survey.

Time-like vs Space-like Extra Dimensions

Higher-dimensional theories with time-like and space-like extra dimensions are compared both from the conceptual and from the phenomenological points of view. In this context causality and unitarity are discussed. It is shown that additional time-like dimensions allow to recover four-dimensional phenomenology without invoking neither Kaluza-Klein compactification procedure nor brane world construct. It is shown, also, that contrary to scenarios with space-like extra dimensions, in higher-dimensional space-times with additional time-like dimensions the cosmological constant problem can be safely solved.

Causality and Unitarity Are Not Violated in Space-Times with an Additional Compact Time-like Dimension

The hypothesis that the causal properties of space-time, as well as other properties of physical systems like unitarity, charge conservation, etc., might be decided by the higher dimensional structure (in particular, higher-dimensional physical laws), rather than by the four-dimensional one, is explored in order to evade the most awkward problems of higher-dimensional theories with compact extra time-like dimensions: violation of causality and of unitarity.

Quintom cosmologies with arbitrary potentials

In this paper we investigate quintom cosmologies with arbitrary potentials from the dynamical systems perspective. The dynamical systems analysis is complete in the sense that it includes the asymptotic regime where both scalar fields diverge, which proves to be particularly relevant in connection with the existence of tracking phases. The results of the present study indicate that the existence of phantom attractors is not generic: for quintom models there may exist either de Sitter attractors associated with the saddle points of the potential, or tracking attractors in the asymptotic regime where the scalar fields diverge.

Dynamics of Quintessence Models of Dark Energy with Exponential Coupling to the Dark Matter

We explore quintessence models of dark energy which exhibit non-minimal coupling between the dark matter and the dark energy components of the cosmic fluid. The kind of coupling chosen is inspired in scalar-tensor theories of gravity. We impose a suitable dynamics of the expansion allowing to derive exact Friedmann-Robertson-Walker solutions once the coupling function is given as input. Self-interaction potentials of single and double exponential types emerge as result of our choice of the coupling function. The stability and existence of the solutions is discussed in some detail. Although, in general, models with appropriated interaction between the components of the cosmic mixture are useful to handle the coincidence problem, in the present study the coincidence can not be evaded due to the choice of the solution generating ansatz.

Crossing the phantom divide without phantom matter

A class of braneworld models can lead to phantom-like acceleration of the late universe, but without the need for any phantom matter. In the simplest models, the universe contains only cold dark matter and a cosmological constant. We generalize these models by introducing a quintessence field. The new feature in our models is that quintessence leads to a crossing of the phantom divide, $w=-1$. This is a purely gravitational effect, and there is no phantom instability. Furthermore, the Hubble parameter is always decreasing, and there is no big rip singularity in the future.

Inhomogeneous models of interacting dark matter and dark energy

We derive and analyze a class of spherically symmetric cosmological models whose source is an interactive mixture of inhomogeneous cold dark matter (DM) and a generic homogeneous dark energy (DE) fluid. If the DE fluid corresponds to a quintessense scalar field, the interaction term can be associated with a well motivated non--minimal coupling to the DM component. By constructing a suitable volume average of the DM component we obtain a Friedman evolution equation relating this average density with an average Hubble scalar, with the DE component playing the role of a repulsive and time-dependent $Λ$ term. Once we select an ``equation of state'' linking the energy density ($μ$) and pressure ($p$) of the DE fluid, as well as a free function governing the radial dependence, the models become fully determinate and can be applied to known specific DE sources, such as quintessense scalar fields or tachyonic fluids. Considering the simple equation of state $p= (γ-1) μ$ with $0\leqγ<2/3$, we show that the free parameters and boundary conditions can be selected for an adequate description of a local DM overdensity evolving in a suitable cosmic background that accurately fits current observational data. While a DE dominated scenario emerges in the asymptotic future, with total $Ω$ and $q$ tending respectively to 1 and -1/2 for all cosmic observers, the effects of inhomogeneity and anisotropy yield different local behavior and evolution rates for these parameters in the local overdense region. We suggest that the models presented can be directly applied to explore the effects of various DE formalisms on local DM cosmological inhomogeneities.

Quintessence models of Dark Energy with non-minimal coupling

We explore quintessence models of dark energy which exhibit non-minimal coupling between the dark matter and the dark energy components of the cosmic fluid. The kind of coupling chosen is inspired in scalar-tensor theories of gravity. We impose a suitable dynamics of the expansion allowing to derive exact Friedmann-Robertson-Walker solutions once the coupling function is given as input. Coupling functions that lead to self-interaction potentials of the single and double exponential types are the target of the present investigation. The stability and existence of the solutions is discussed in some detail. The models are tested against the observational evidence.

Symmetry relating Gravity with Antigravity: A possible resolution of the Cosmological Constant Problem?

I discuss possible implications a symmetry relating gravity with antigravity might have for smoothing out of the cosmological constant puzzle. For this purpose, a very simple model with spontaneous symmetry breaking is explored, that is based on Einstein-Hilbert gravity with two self-interacting scalar fields. The second (exotic) scalar particle with negative energy density, could be interpreted, alternatively, as an antigravitating particle with positive energy.

Unified Models of Inflation and Quintessence

We apply an extended version of the method developed in reference Int.J.Mod.Phys.D5(1996)71, to derive exact cosmological (flat) Friedmann-Robertson-Walker solutions in RS2 brane models with a perfect fluid of ordinary matter plus a scalar field fluid trapped on the brane. We found new exact solutions, that can serve to unify inflation and quintessence in a common theoretical framework.

Exact Scaling Solutions in Normal and Brans-Dicke Models of Dark Energy

A linear relationship between the Hubble expansion parameter and the time derivative of the scalar field is explored in order to derive exact cosmological, attractor-like solutions, both in Einstein's theory and in Brans-Dicke gravity with two fluids: a background fluid of ordinary matter, together with a self-interacting scalar field accounting for the dark energy in the universe. A priori assumptions about the functional form of the self-interaction potential or about the scale factor behavior are not necessary. These are obtained as outputs of the assumed relationship between the Hubble parameter and the time derivative of the scalar field. A parametric class of scaling quintessence models given by a self-interaction potential of a peculiar form: a combination of exponentials with dependence on the barotropic index of the background fluid, arises. Both normal quintessence described by a self-interacting scalar field minimally coupled to gravity and Brans-Dicke quintessence given by a non-minimally coupled scalar field are then analyzed and the relevance of these models for the description of the cosmic evolution are discussed in some detail. The stability of these solutions is also briefly commented on.

New exact cosmological solutions to Brans-Dicke gravity with a self-interacting scalar-field

We derive a new parametric class of exact cosmological solutions to Brans-Dicke theory of gravity with a self-interacting scalar field and a barotropic perfect fluid of ordinary matter, by assuming a linear relationship between the Hubble expansion parameter and the time derivative of the scalar field. As a consequence only a class of exponential potentials and their combinations can be treated. The relevance of the solutions found for the description of the cosmic evolution are discussed in detail. We focus our discussion mainly on the possibility to have superquintessence behavior.

New exact cosmological solutions to Einstein's gravity minimally coupled to a Quintessence field

A linear relationship between the Hubble expansion parameter and the time derivative of the scalar field is assumed in order to derive exact analytic cosmological solutions to Einstein's gravity with two fluids: a barotropic perfect fluid of ordinary matter, together with a self-interacting scalar field fluid accounting for the dark energy in the universe. A priori assumptions about the functional form of the self-interaction potential or about the scale factor behavior are not neccessary. These are obtained as outputs of the assumed linear relationship between the Hubble expansion parameter and the time derivative of the scalar field. As a consequence only a class of exponential potentials and their combinations can be treated. The relevance of the solutions found for the description of the cosmic evolution are discussed in some detail. The possibility to have superaccelerated expansion within the context of normal quintessence models is also discussed.

A Model of the Universe including dark Energy

In this work we explore a model of the universe in which dark energy is modelled explicitely with both a dynamical quintessence field (with a double exponential self-interaction potential) and a cosmological constant. For a given region of the parameter space, our results confirm the possibility of a collapsing universe, which is necessary for an adequate definition of both perturbative quantum field and string theories. We have also reproduced the measurements of modulus distance from supernovae with good accuracy.

A model of the Universe including Dark Energy accounted for by both a Quintessence Field and a (negative) Cosmological Constant

In this work we present a model of the universe in which dark energy is modelled explicitely with both a dynamical quintessence field and a cosmological constant. Our results confirm the possibility of a future collapsing universe (for a given region of the parameter space), which is necessary for a consistent formulation of string theory and quantum field theory. We have also reproduced the measurements of modulus distance from supernovae with good accuracy.

In this talk we present a model of the universe in which dark energy is modelled explicitely with both a dynamical quintessence field and a cosmological constant. Our results confirm the possibility of a collapsing universe (for a given region of the parameter space), which is advantageous for an adequate formulation of both perturbative quantum field and string theories. We have also reproduced the measurements of modulus distance from supernovae with good accuracy.

Thick Brane Worlds Arising From Pure Geometry

We study a non-Riemannian modification of 5-dimensional Kaluza-Klein theory. In our proposal the Riemannian structure of the five-dimensional manifold is replaced by a Weyl-integrable one. In this context a 4-dimensional Poincar$\grave{e}$ invariant solution is studied. Spacetime structures with thick smooth branes separated in the extra dimension arise. We focus our attention, mainly, in a case where the massless graviton is located in one of the thick branes at the origin, meanwhile the matter degrees of freedom are confined to the other brane. Due to the small overlap of the graviton's wave-function with the second thick brane, the model accounts for a resolution of the mass hierarchy problem a la Randall-Sundrum. Although, initially, no assumptions are made about the topology of the extra dimension, the solution found yields an extra space that is effectivelly compact and respects $Z_2$ symmetry. Unlike some other models with branes, a preliminary study (not including the effect of scalar perturbations) shows that the spectrum of massive Kaluza-Klein states is quantized and free of tachyonic modes.

Comments on the paper astro-ph/0103335 by C Rubano and P Scudellaro

We briefly comment on a paper by Rubano and Scudellaro [astro-ph/0103335] where they found general exact solutions for two classes of exponential potentials in a scalar field model for quintessence. In that paper the authors were led to some interesting conclusions after a proper choice of the integration constants. By using dimensionless variables we show that the integration constants can be found explicitly without additional assumptions. In consequence we revise some results and conclusions in that paper. We also reproduce observations for Type-1a supernovae with good accuracy.
