On the Log-submodularity for zonoids: from Mixed Volume inequalities to the Hypercube

We prove a log-submodularity-type inequality for zonoids in $\mathbb{R}^4$, extending the three-dimensional result of Fradelizi, Madiman, Meyer, and Zvavitch. More generally, we conjecture a log-submodularity-type inequality for zonoids in arbitrary dimension. This inequality admits several equivalent formulations in terms of volumes of coordinate projections as well as in terms of mixed volumes, thereby unifying several geometric perspectives. We reduce the conjectured inequality to a polynomial inequality whose variables are associated with the vertices of a hypercube and whose coefficients encode the volumes of 0/1 simplices. This reduction reveals unexpected connections between mixed volumes of zonoids, matroid theory, and real algebraic geometry.

On the discrete Heine-Shephard problem for four lattice polygons

We study the set of square-free parts of volume polynomials associated with four planar lattice polytopes. This is motivated by the problem of describing possible pairwise intersection numbers of four curves in $(\mathbb{C}^*)^2$ with prescribed Newton polytopes and generic coefficients. It is known that for arbitrary convex bodies in $\mathbb{R}^2$, the corresponding square-free polynomials are characterized by the Pl\"ucker-type inequalities. We show that this characterization fails in the lattice setting: the interior of the space defined by the Pl\"ucker-type inequalities contains integer polynomials that are and are not realizable by lattice polytopes. This phenomenon arises from additional arithmetic constraints on the mixed areas of lattice polytopes. These constraints become apparent when we study a "discrete diagram", which maps a pair of planar lattice polytopes to their mixed area together with their lattice widths in a given direction.

Binary Triorthogonal and CSS-T Codes for Quantum Error Correction

In this paper, we study binary triorthogonal codes and their relation to CSS-T quantum codes. We characterize the binary triorthogonal codes that are minimal or maximal with respect to the CSS-T poset, and we also study how to derive new triorthogonal matrices from existing ones. Given a binary triorthogonal matrix, we characterize which of its equivalent matrices are also triorthogonal. As a consequence, we show that a binary triorthogonal matrix uniquely determines the parameters of the corresponding triorthogonal quantum code, meaning that any other equivalent matrix that is also triorthogonal gives rise to a triorthogonal quantum code with the same parameters.

An algebraic characterization of binary CSS-T codes and cyclic CSS-T codes for quantum fault tolerance

CSS-T codes were recently introduced as quantum error-correcting codes that respect a transversal gate. A CSS-T code depends on a CSS-T pair, which is a pair of binary codes $(C_1, C_2)$ such that $C_1$ contains $C_2$, $C_2$ is even, and the shortening of the dual of $C_1$ with respect to the support of each codeword of $C_2$ is self-dual. In this paper, we give new conditions to guarantee that a pair of binary codes $(C_1, C_2)$ is a CSS-T pair. We define the poset of CSS-T pairs and determine the minimal and maximal elements of the poset. We provide a propagation rule for nondegenerate CSS-T codes. We apply some main results to Reed-Muller, cyclic, and extended cyclic codes. We characterize CSS-T pairs of cyclic codes in terms of the defining cyclotomic cosets. We find cyclic and extended cyclic codes to obtain quantum codes with better parameters than those in the literature.

On the affine permutation group of certain decreasing Cartesian codes

A decreasing Cartesian code is defined by evaluating a monomial set closed under divisibility on a Cartesian set. Some well-known examples are the Reed-Solomon, Reed-Muller, and (some) toric codes. The affine permutations consist of the permutations of the code that depend on an affine transformation. In this work, we study the affine permutations of some decreasing Cartesian codes, including the case when the Cartesian set has copies of multiplicative or additive subgroups.

Mixed volumes of zonoids and the absolute value of the Grassmannian

Zonoids are Hausdorff limits of zonotopes, while zonotopes are convex polytopes defined as the Minkowski sums of finitely many segments. We present a combinatorial framework that links the study of mixed volumes of zonoids (a topic that has applications in algebraic combinatorics) with the study of the absolute value of the Grassmannian, defined as the image of the Grassmannian under the coordinate-wise absolute value map. We use polyhedral computations to derive new families of inequalities for n zonoids in dimension d, when (n,d)=(6,2) and (6,3). Unlike the classical geometric inequalities, originating from the Brunn-Minkowski and Aleksandrov-Fenchel inequalities, the inequalities we produce have the special feature of being Minkowski linear in each of the n zonoids they involve.

The volume polynomial of lattice polygons

We prove that every indefinite quadratic form with non-negative integer coefficients is the volume polynomial of a pair of lattice polygons. This solves the discrete version of the Heine-Shephard problem for two bodies in the plane. As an application, we show how to construct a pair of planar tropical curves (or a pair of divisors on a toric surface) with given intersection number and self-intersection numbers.

Relative hulls and quantum codes

Given two $q$-ary codes $C_1$ and $C_2$, the relative hull of $C_1$ with respect to $C_2$ is the intersection $C_1\cap C_2^\perp$. We prove that when $q>2$, the relative hull dimension can be repeatedly reduced by one, down to a certain bound, by replacing either of the two codes with an equivalent one. The reduction of the relative hull dimension applies to hulls taken with respect to the $e$-Galois inner product, which has as special cases both the Euclidean and Hermitian inner products. We give conditions under which the relative hull dimension can be increased by one via equivalent codes when $q>2$. We study some consequences of the relative hull properties on entanglement-assisted quantum error-correcting codes and prove the existence of new entanglement-assisted quantum error-correcting maximum distance separable codes, meaning those whose parameters satisfy the quantum Singleton bound.

The dual of an evaluation code

The aim of this work is to study the dual and the algebraic dual of an evaluation code using standard monomials and indicator functions. We show that the dual of an evaluation code is the evaluation code of the algebraic dual. We develop an algorithm for computing a basis for the algebraic dual. Let $C_1$ and $C_2$ be linear codes spanned by standard monomials. We give a combinatorial condition for the monomial equivalence of $C_1$ and the dual $C_2^\perp$. Moreover, we give an explicit description of a generator matrix of $C_2^\perp$ in terms of that of $C_1$ and coefficients of indicator functions. For Reed--Muller-type codes we give a duality criterion in terms of the v-number and the Hilbert function of a vanishing ideal. As an application, we provide an explicit duality for Reed--Muller-type codes corresponding to Gorenstein ideals. In addition, when the evaluation code is monomial and the set of evaluation points is a degenerate affine space, we classify when the dual is a monomial code.

Plücker-type inequalities for mixed areas and intersection numbers of curve arrangements

Any collection of $n$ compact convex planar sets $K_1,\dots, K_n$ defines a vector of ${n\choose 2}$ mixed areas $V(K_i,K_j)$ for $1\leq i<j\leq n$. We show that for $n\geq 4$ these numbers satisfy certain Plücker-type inequalities. Moreover, we prove that for $n=4$ these inequalities completely describe the space of all mixed area vectors $(V(K_i,K_j) : 1\leq i<j\leq 4)$. For arbitrary $n\geq 4$ we show that this space has a semialgebraic closure of full dimension. As an application, we obtain an inequality description for the smallest positive homogeneous set containing the configuration space of intersection numbers of quadruples of tropical curves.

$\mathbb{F}_q$-zeros of sparse trivariate polynomials and toric 3-fold codes

For a given lattice polytope $P$ in $\mathbb{R}^3$, consider the space $\mathcal{L}_P$ of trivariate polynomials over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$, whose Newton polytopes are contained in $P$. We give an upper bound for the maximum number of $\mathbb{F}_q$-zeros of polynomials in $\mathcal{L}_P$ in terms of the Minkowski length of $P$ and $q$, the size of the field. Consequently, this produces lower bounds for the minimum distance of toric codes defined by evaluating elements of $\mathcal{L}_P$ at the points of the algebraic torus $(\mathbb{F}_q^*)^3$. Our approach is based on understanding factorizations of polynomials in $\mathcal{L}_P$ with the largest possible number of non-unit factors. The related combinatorial result that we obtain is a description of Minkowski sums of lattice polytopes contained in $P$ with the largest possible number of non-trivial summands.

Classification of triples of lattice polytopes with a given mixed volume

We present an algorithm for the classification of triples of lattice polytopes with a given mixed volume $m$ in dimension 3. It is known that the classification can be reduced to the enumeration of so-called irreducible triples, the number of which is finite for fixed $m$. Following this algorithm, we enumerate all irreducible triples of normalized mixed volume up to 4 that are inclusion-maximal. This produces a classification of generic trivariate sparse polynomial systems with up to 4 solutions in the complex torus, up to monomial changes of variables. By a recent result of Esterov, this leads to a description of all generic trivariate sparse polynomial systems that are solvable by radicals.

Coding theory package for Macaulay2

In this Macaulay2 \cite{M2} package we define an object called {\it linear code}. We implement functions that compute basic parameters and objects associated with a linear code, such as generator and parity check matrices, the dual code, length, dimension, and minimum distance, among others. We define an object {\it evaluation code}, a construction which allows to study linear codes using tools of algebraic geometry and commutative algebra. We implement functions to generate important families of linear codes such as Hamming codes, cyclic codes, Reed--Solomon codes, Reed--Muller codes, Cartesian codes, monomial--Cartesian codes, and toric codes. In addition, we define functions for the syndrome decoding algorithm and locally recoverable code construction, which are important tools in applications of linear codes. The package \textit{CodingTheory.m2} is available at \url{https://github.com/Macaulay2/Workshop-2020-Cleveland/tree/CodingTheory/CodingTheory}

Inequalities between mixed volumes of convex bodies: volume bounds for the Minkowski sum

In the course of classifying generic sparse polynomial systems which are solvable in radicals, Esterov recently showed that the volume of the Minkowski sum $P_1+\dots+P_d$ of $d$-dimensional lattice polytopes is bounded from above by a function of order $O(m^{2^d})$, where $m$ is the mixed volume of the tuple $(P_1,\dots,P_d)$. This is a consequence of the well-known Aleksandrov-Fenchel inequality. Esterov also posed the problem of determining a sharper bound. We show how additional relations between mixed volumes can be employed to improve the bound to $O(m^d)$, which is asymptotically sharp. We furthermore prove a sharp exact upper bound in dimensions 2 and 3. Our results generalize to tuples of arbitrary convex bodies with volume at least one.

Monomial-Cartesian codes and their duals, with applications to LCD codes, quantum codes, and locally recoverable codes

A monomial-Cartesian code is an evaluation code defined by evaluating a set of monomials over a Cartesian product. It is a generalization of some families of codes in the literature, for instance toric codes, affine Cartesian codes and $J$-affine variety codes. In this work we use the vanishing ideal of the Cartesian product to give a description of the dual of a monomial-Cartesian code. Then we use such description of the dual to prove the existence of quantum error correcting codes and MDS quantum error correcting codes. Finally we show that the direct product of monomial-Cartesian codes is a locally recoverable code with $t$-availability if at least $t$ of the components are locally recoverable codes.

Wulff shapes and a characterization of simplices via a Bezout type inequality

Inspired by a fundamental theorem of Bernstein, Kushnirenko, and Khovanskii we study the following Bezout type inequality for mixed volumes $$ V(L_1,\dots,L_{n})V_n(K)\leq V(L_1,K[{n-1}])V(L_2,\dots, L_{n},K). $$ We show that the above inequality characterizes simplices, i.e. if $K$ is a convex body satisfying the inequality for all convex bodies $L_1, \dots, L_n \subset {\mathbb R}^n$, then $K$ must be an $n$-dimensional simplex. The main idea of the proof is to study perturbations given by Wulff shapes. In particular, we prove a new theorem on differentiability of the support function of the Wulff shape, which is of independent interest. In addition, we study the Bezout inequality for mixed volumes introduced in arXiv:1507.00765 . We introduce the class of weakly decomposable convex bodies which is strictly larger than the set of all polytopes that are non-simplices. We show that the Bezout inequality in arXiv:1507.00765 characterizes weakly indecomposable convex bodies.

Criteria for strict monotonicity of the mixed volume of convex polytopes

Let $P_1,\dots, P_n$ and $Q_1,\dots, Q_n$ be convex polytopes in $\mathbb{R}^n$ such that $P_i\subset Q_i$. It is well-known that the mixed volume has the monotonicity property: $V(P_1,\dots,P_n)\leq V(Q_1,\dots,Q_n)$. We give two criteria for when this inequality is strict in terms of essential collections of faces as well as mixed polyhedral subdivisions. This geometric result allows us to characterize sparse polynomial systems with Newton polytopes $P_1,\dots,P_n$ whose number of isolated solutions equals the normalized volume of the convex hull of $P_1\cup\dots\cup P_n$. In addition, we obtain an analog of Cramer's rule for sparse polynomial systems.
