Generalized multiplicities of edge ideals

We explore connections between the generalized multiplicities of square-free monomial ideals and the combinatorial structure of the underlying hypergraphs using methods of commutative algebra and polyhedral geometry. For instance, we show the $j$-multiplicity is multiplicative over the connected components of a hypergraph, and we explicitly relate the $j$-multiplicity of the edge ideal of a properly connected uniform hypergraph to the Hilbert-Samuel multiplicity of its special fiber ring. In addition, we provide general bounds for the generalized multiplicities of the edge ideals and compute these invariants for classes of uniform hypergraphs.

Bezout Inequality for Mixed volumes

In this paper we consider the following analog of Bezout inequality for mixed volumes: $$V(P_1,\dots,P_r,Δ^{n-r})V_n(Δ)^{r-1}\leq \prod_{i=1}^r V(P_i,Δ^{n-1})\ \text{ for }2\leq r\leq n.$$ We show that the above inequality is true when $Δ$ is an $n$-dimensional simplex and $P_1, \dots, P_r$ are convex bodies in $\mathbb{R}^n$. We conjecture that if the above inequality is true for all convex bodies $P_1, \dots, P_r$, then $Δ$ must be an $n$-dimensional simplex. We prove that if the above inequality is true for all convex bodies $P_1, \dots, P_r$, then $Δ$ must be indecomposable (i.e. cannot be written as the Minkowski sum of two convex bodies which are not homothetic to $Δ$), which confirms the conjecture when $Δ$ is a simple polytope and in the 2-dimensional case. Finally, we connect the inequality to an inequality on the volume of orthogonal projections of convex bodies as well as prove an isomorphic version of the inequality.

Eventual quasi-linearity of the Minkowski length

The Minkowski length of a lattice polytope $P$ is a natural generalization of the lattice diameter of $P$. It can be defined as the largest number of lattice segments whose Minkowski sum is contained in $P$. The famous Ehrhart theorem states that the number of lattice points in the positive integer dilates $tP$ of a lattice polytope $P$ behaves polynomially in $t\in\mathbb{N}$. In this paper we prove that for any lattice polytope $P$, the Minkowski length of $tP$ for $t\in\mathbb{N}$ is eventually a quasi-polynomial with linear constituents. We also give a formula for the Minkowski length of coordinates boxes, degree one polytopes, and dilates of unimodular simplices. In addition, we give a new bound for the Minkowski length of lattice polygons and show that the Minkowski length of a lattice triangle coincides with its lattice diameter.

Characterization of Simplices via the Bezout Inequality for Mixed volumes

We consider the following Bezout inequality for mixed volumes: $$V(K_1,\dots,K_r,Δ[{n-r}])V_n(Δ)^{r-1}\leq \prod_{i=1}^r V(K_i,Δ[{n-1}])\ \text{ for }2\leq r\leq n.$$ It was shown previously that the inequality is true for any $n$-dimensional simplex $Δ$ and any convex bodies $K_1, \dots, K_r$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$. It was conjectured that simplices are the only convex bodies for which the inequality holds for arbitrary bodies $K_1, \dots, K_r$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$. In this paper we prove that this is indeed the case if we assume that $Δ$ is a convex polytope. Thus the Bezout inequality characterizes simplices in the class of convex $n$-polytopes. In addition, we show that if a body $Δ$ satisfies the Bezout inequality for all bodies $K_1, \dots, K_r$ then the boundary of $Δ$ cannot have strict points. In particular, it cannot have points with positive Gaussian curvature.

Multigraded Hilbert function and toric complete intersection codes

Let $X$ be a complete $n$-dimensional simplicial toric variety with homogeneous coordinate ring $S$. We study the multigraded Hilbert function $H_Y$ of reduced $0$-dimensional subschemes $Y$ in $X$. We provide explicit formulas and prove non-decreasing and stabilization properties of $H_Y$ when $Y$ is a $0$-dimensional complete intersection in $X$. We apply our results to computing the dimension of some evaluation codes on $0$-dimensional complete intersection in simplicial toric varieties.

Lattice polytopes in coding theory

In this paper we discuss combinatorial questions about lattice polytopes motivated by recent results on minimum distance estimation for toric codes. We also prove a new inductive bound for the minimum distance of generalized toric codes. As an application, we give new formulas for the minimum distance of generalized toric codes for special lattice point configurations.

Tropical determinant on transportation polytope

Let ${\mathcal D}^{k,l}(m,n)$ be the set of all the integer points in the transportation polytope of $kn\times ln$ matrices with row sums $lm$ and column sums $km$. In this paper we find the sharp lower bound on the tropical determinant over the set ${\mathcal D}^{k,l}(m,n)$. This integer piecewise-linear programming problem in arbitrary dimension turns out to be equivalent to an integer non-linear (in fact, quadratic) optimization problem in dimension two. We also compute the sharp upper bound on a modification of the tropical determinant, where the maximum over all the transversals in a matrix is replaced with the minimum.

On dual toric complete intersection codes

In this paper we study duality for evaluation codes on intersections of d hypersurfaces with given d-dimensional Newton polytopes, so called toric complete intersection codes. In particular, we give a condition for such a code to be quasi-self-dual. In the case of d=2 it reduces to a combinatorial condition on the Newton polygons. This allows us to give an explicit construction of dual and quasi-self-dual toric complete intersection codes. We provide a list of examples over the field of 16 elements.

Toric complete intersection codes

In this paper we give lower bounds for the minimum distance of evaluation codes constructed from complete intersections in toric varieties. This generalizes the results of Gold-Little-Schenck and Ballico-Fontanari who considered evaluation codes on complete intersections in the projective space.

Bringing Toric Codes to the next dimension

This paper is concerned with the minimum distance computation for higher dimensional toric codes defined by lattice polytopes. We show that the minimum distance is multiplicative with respect to taking the product of polytopes, and behaves in a simple way when one builds a k-dilate of a pyramid over a polytope. This allows us to construct a large class of examples of higher dimensional toric codes where we can compute the minimum distance explicitly.

Toric surface codes and Minkowski length of polygons

In this paper we prove new lower bounds for the minimum distance of a toric surface code defined by a convex lattice polygon P. The bounds involve a geometric invariant L(P), called the full Minkowski length of P which can be easily computed for any given P.

Global residues for sparse polynomial systems

We consider families of sparse Laurent polynomials f_1,...,f_n with a finite set of common zeroes Z_f in the complex algebraic n-torus. The global residue assigns to every Laurent polynomial g the sum of its Grothendieck residues over the set Z_f. We present a new symbolic algorithm for computing the global residue as a rational function of the coefficients of the f_i when the Newton polytopes of the f_i are full-dimensional. Our results have consequences in sparse polynomial interpolation and lattice point enumeration in Minkowski sums of polytopes.
