Controlled flavor violation in the MSSM from a unified $Δ(27)$ flavor symmetry

We study the phenomenology of a unified supersymmetric theory with a flavor symmetry $Δ(27)$. The model accommodates quark and lepton masses, mixing angles and CP phases. In this model, the Dirac and Majorana mass matrices have a unified texture zero structure in the $(1,1)$ entry that leads to the Gatto-Sartori-Tonin relation between the Cabibbo angle and ratios of the masses in the quark sectors, and to a natural departure from zero of the $θ_{13}^\ell$ angle in the lepton sector. We derive the flavor structures of the trilinears and soft mass matrices, and show their general non-universality. This causes large flavor violating effects. As a consequence, the parameter space for this model is constrained, allowing it to be (dis)proven by flavor violation searches in the next decade. Although the results are model specific, we compare them to previous studies to show similar flavour effects (and associated constraints) are expected in general in supersymmetric flavor models, and may be used to distinguish them.

Fermion Masses and Mixings and Dark Matter Constraints in a Model with Radiative Seesaw Mechanism

We formulate a predictive model of fermion masses and mixings based on a $Δ(27)$ family symmetry. In the quark sector the model leads to the viable mixing inspired texture where the Cabibbo angle comes from the down quark sector and the other angles come from both up and down quark sectors. In the lepton sector the model generates a predictive structure for charged leptons and, after radiative seesaw, an effective neutrino mass matrix with only one real and one complex parameter. We carry out a detailed analysis of the predictions in the lepton sector, where the model is only viable for inverted neutrino mass hierarchy, predicting a strict correlation between $θ_{23}$ and $θ_{13}$. We show a benchmark point that leads to the best-fit values of $θ_{12}$, $θ_{13}$, predicting a specific $\sin^2θ_{23} \simeq 0.51$ (within the $3 σ$ range), a leptonic CP-violating Dirac phase $δ\simeq 281.6 ^\circ$ and for neutrinoless double-beta decay $m_{ee} \simeq 41.3$ meV. We turn then to an analysis of the dark matter candidates in the model, which are stabilized by an unbroken $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry. We discuss the possibility of scalar dark matter, which can generate the observed abundance through the Higgs portal by the standard WIMP mechanism. An interesting possibility arises if the lightest heavy Majorana neutrino is the lightest $\mathbb{Z}_2$-odd particle. The model can produce a viable fermionic dark matter candidate, but only as a feebly interacting massive particle (FIMP), with the smallness of the coupling to the visible sector protected by a symmetry and directly related to the smallness of the light neutrino masses.

Spontaneous CP violation in multi-Higgs potentials with triplets of $Δ(3n^2)$ and $Δ(6n^2)$

Motivated by discrete flavour symmetry models, we analyse Spontaneous CP Violation (SCPV) for potentials involving three or six Higgs fields (both electroweak doublets and singlets) which fall into irreducible triplet representations of discrete symmetries belonging to the $Δ(3n^2)$ and $Δ(6n^2)$ series, including $A_4$, $S_4$, $Δ(27)$ and $Δ(54)$. For each case, we give the potential and find various global mimima for different regions of the parameter space of the potential. Using CP-odd basis Invariants that indicate the presence of Spontaneous CP Violation we separate the VEVs into those that do or do not violate CP. In cases where CP is preserved we reveal a CP symmetry of the potential that is preserved by those VEVs, otherwise we display a non-zero CP-odd Invariant. Finally we identify interesting cases where there is Spontaneous Geometrical CP Violation in which the VEVs have calculable phases.

Minima of multi-Higgs potentials with triplets of $Δ(3n^2)$ and $Δ(6n^2)$

We analyse the minima of scalar potentials for multi-Higgs models where the scalars are arranged as either one triplet or two triplets of the discrete symmetries $A_4$, $S_4$, $Δ(27)$, $Δ(54)$, as well as $Δ(3n^2)$ and $Δ(6n^2)$ with $n>3$. The results should be useful for both multi-Higgs models involving electroweak doublets and multi-flavon models involving electroweak singlets, where in both cases the fields transform as triplets under some non-Abelian discrete symmetry.

CP-odd invariants for multi-Higgs models and applications with discrete symmetry

CP-odd invariants are useful for studying the CP properties of Lagrangians in any basis. We explain how to build basis invariants for the scalar sector, and how to distinguish CP-odd invariants from CP-even invariants. Up to a certain order, we use these methods to systematically build all the CP-odd invariants. The CP-odd invariants signal either explicit or spontaneous violation of CP. Making use of the CP-odd invariants, we determine the CP properties of potentials with 3 and with 6 Higgs fields arranged as triplets of specific discrete symmetries in the $Δ(3n^2)$ or $Δ(6n^2)$ series (inlcuding $A_4$, $S_4$, $Δ(27)$ and $Δ(54)$ as well as the cases for $n>3$).

Bottom-Up Discrete Symmetries for Cabibbo Mixing

We perform a bottom-up search for discrete non-Abelian symmetries capable of quantizing the Cabibbo angle that parameterizes CKM mixing. Given a particular Abelian symmetry structure in the up and down sectors, we construct representations of the associated residual generators which explicitly depend on the degrees of freedom present in our effective mixing matrix. We then discretize those degrees of freedom and utilize the Groups, Algorithms, Programming (GAP) package to close the associated finite groups. This short study is performed in the context of recent results indicating that, without resorting to special model-dependent corrections, no small-order finite group can simultaneously predict all four parameters of the three-generation CKM matrix and that only groups of $\mathcal{O}(10^{2})$ can predict the analogous parameters of the leptonic PMNS matrix, regardless of whether neutrinos are Dirac or Majorana particles. Therefore a natural model of flavour might instead incorporate small(er) finite groups whose predictions for fermionic mixing are corrected via other mechanisms.

Leptogenesis in a $Δ(27) \times SO(10)$ SUSY GUT

Although $SO(10)$ Supersymmetric (SUSY) Grand Unification Theories (GUTs) are very attractive for neutrino mass and mixing, it is often quite difficult to achieve successful leptogenesis from the lightest right-handed neutrino $N_1$ due to the strong relations between neutrino and up-type quark Yukawa couplings. We show that in a realistic model these constraints are relaxed, making $N_1$ leptogenesis viable. To illustrate this, we calculate the baryon asymmetry of the Universe $ Y_B $ from flavoured $ N_1 $ leptogenesis in a recently proposed $ Δ(27) \times SO(10) $ SUSY GUT. The flavoured Boltzmann equations are solved numerically, and comparison with the observed $ Y_B $ places constraints on the allowed values of right-handed neutrino masses and neutrino Yukawa couplings. The flavoured $SO(10)$ SUSY GUT is not only fairly complete and predictive in the lepton sector, but can also explain the BAU through leptogenesis with natural values in the lepton sector albeit with some tuning in the quark sector.

CP-odd invariants for multi-Higgs models: applications with discrete symmetry

CP-odd invariants provide a basis independent way of studying the CP properties of Lagrangians. We propose powerful methods for constructing basis invariants and determining whether they are CP-odd or CP-even, then systematically construct all of the simplest CP-odd invariants up to a given order, finding many new ones. The CP-odd invariants are valid for general potentials when expressed in a standard form. We then apply our results to scalar potentials involving three (or six) Higgs fields which form irreducible triplets under a discrete symmetry, including invariants for both explicit as well as spontaneous CP violation. The considered cases include one triplet of Standard Model (SM) gauge singlet scalars, one triplet of SM Higgs doublets, two triplets of SM singlets, and two triplets of SM Higgs doublets. For each case we study the potential symmetric under one of the simplest discrete symmetries with irreducible triplet representations, namely $A_4$, $S_4$, $Δ(27)$ or $Δ(54)$, as well as the infinite classes of discrete symmetries $Δ(3n^2)$ or $Δ(6n^2)$.

Towards a complete $Δ(27) \times SO(10)$ SUSY GUT

We propose a renormalisable model based on $Δ(27)$ family symmetry with an $SO(10)$ grand unified theory (GUT) leading to a novel form of spontaneous geometrical CP violation. The symmetries, including $Δ(27)$ and $\mathbb{Z}_{9} \times \mathbb{Z}_{12} \times \mathbb{Z}_{4}^{R}$, are broken close to the GUT breaking scale to yield the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) with the standard R-parity. $SO(10)$ is broken via $SU(5)$ with doublet-triplet splitting achieved by a version of the Dimopoulos-Wilczek (missing VEV) mechanism. Low-scale Yukawa structure is dictated by the coupling of matter to $ Δ(27) $ antitriplets $ \barϕ $ whose VEVs are aligned in the CSD3 directions by the superpotential. Light physical Majorana neutrinos masses emerge from a specific implementation of the seesaw mechanism within $SO(10)$. The model predicts a normal neutrino mass hierarchy with the best-fit lightest neutrino mass $ m_1 = 0.13 $ meV and the PMNS mixing parameters $θ^l_{13} \approx 8.35^{\circ}$, $θ^l_{12}\approx 34^{\circ}$, $θ^l_{23}\approx 43^{\circ}$ and an oscillation phase $δ^l\approx -90^{\circ}$.

Non-Abelian family symmetries as portals to dark matter

Non-Abelian family symmetries offer a very promising explanation for the flavour structure in the Standard Model and its extensions. We explore the possibility that dark matter consists in fermions that transform under a family symmetry, such that the visible and dark sector are linked by the familons - Standard Model gauge singlet scalars, responsible for spontaneously breaking the family symmetry. We study three representative models with non-Abelian family symmetries that have been shown capable to explain the masses and mixing of the Standard Model fermions. One of our central results is the possibility to have dark matter fermions and at least one familon with masses on and even below the experimentally accessible TeV scale. In particular we discuss the characteristic signatures in collider experiments from light familon Fields with a non-Abelian family symmetry, and we show that run I of the LHC is already testing this class of models.

Leptogenesis in minimal predictive seesaw models

We estimate the Baryon Asymmetry of the Universe (BAU) arising from leptogenesis within a class of minimal predictive seesaw models involving two right-handed neutrinos and simple Yukawa structures with one texture zero. The two right-handed neutrinos are dominantly responsible for the "atmospheric" and "solar" neutrino masses with Yukawa couplings to $(ν_e, ν_μ, ν_τ)$ proportional to $(0,1,1)$ and $(1,n,n-2)$, respectively, where $n$ is a positive integer. The neutrino Yukawa matrix is therefore characterised by two proportionality constants with their relative phase providing a leptogenesis-PMNS link, enabling the lightest right-handed neutrino mass to be determined from neutrino data and the observed BAU. We discuss an $SU(5)$ SUSY GUT example, where $A_4$ vacuum alignment provides the required Yukawa structures with $n=3$, while a $\mathbb{Z}_9$ symmetry fixes the relatives phase to be a ninth root of unity.

Clues for flavor from rare lepton and quark decays

Flavor symmetries successfully explain lepton and quark masses and mixings yet it is usually hard to distinguish different models that predict the same mixing angles. Further experimental input could be available, if the agents of flavor breaking are sufficiently low in mass and detectable or if new physics with non-trivial flavor charges is sufficiently low in mass and detectable. The recent hint for lepton-nonuniversality in the ratio of branching fractions $B \to K μμ$ over $B \to K e e$, $R_K$, suggests the latter, at least for indirect detection via rare decays. We demonstrate the discriminating power of the rare decay data on flavor model building taking into account viable leptonic mixings and show how correlations with other observables exist in leptoquark models. We give expectations for branching ratios $B \to K \ell \ell^\prime, B_{(s)} \to \ell \ell^\prime$ and $\ell \to \ell^\prime γ$, and Higgs decays $h \to \ell \ell^\prime$.

$Δ(27)$ family symmetry and neutrino mixing

The observed neutrino mixing, having a near maximal atmospheric neutrino mixing angle and a large solar mixing angle, is close to tri-bi-maximal. This structure may be related to the existence of a discrete non-Abelian family symmetry. In this paper the family symmetry is the non-Abelian discrete group $Δ(27)$, a subgroup of $SU(3)$ with triplet and anti-triplet representations. Different frameworks are constructed in which the mixing follows from combining fermion mass terms with the vacuum structure enforced by the discrete symmetry. Mass terms for the fermions originate from familon triplets, anti-triplets or both. Vacuum alignment for the family symmetry breaking familons follows from simple invariants.

$A_4$ symmetry at colliders and in the universe

Two puzzling facts of our time are the observed patterns in the fermion masses and mixings and the existence of non-baryonic dark matter, which are both often associated with extensions of the Standard Model at higher energy scales. In this paper, we consider a solution to these two problems with the flavour symmetry ${\mathbb A}_4\times {\mathbb Z}_2\times {\mathbb Z}_2^\prime$, in a model which has been shown before to explain large leptonic mixings with a specific texture. The model contains 3 generations of $SU(2)_L$-doublet scalar fields, arranged as an ${\mathbb A}_4$-triplet, that spontaneously break the electroweak symmetry, and a "dark sector" of ${\mathbb Z}_2$-odd fields, containing one Majorana neutrino and an ${\mathbb A}_4$-triplet $SU(2)_L$-doublet scalar field, the lightest of which provides a candidate for dark matter. Concerning the ${\mathbb Z}_2$-even scalar fields, compared to the Standard Model, we predict additional fields with masses at the electroweak scale. We therefore investigate present phenomenological constraints from lepton flavour violation experiments, obtaining a lower bound on the extra scalar masses of 140 GeV. Furthermore we consider the oblique parameters, Higgs boson decay properties and possible flavour violating signals at the LHC. Concerning the "dark sector", we study bounds from dark matter search experiments and identify the parameter space of the dark matter candidate that is compatible with the observed relic density. We find two allowed mass ranges for the dark matter within which the experimental constraints can be accommodated: the low-mass range is from 47 GeV to 74 GeV and the high-mass range is from 600 GeV and 3.6 TeV.

Invariant approach to CP in unbroken $Δ(27)$

The invariant approach is a powerful method for studying CP violation for specific Lagrangians. The method is particularly useful for dealing with discrete family symmetries. We focus on the CP properties of unbroken $Δ(27)$ invariant Lagrangians with Yukawa-like terms, which proves to be a rich framework, with distinct aspects of CP, making it an ideal group to investigate with the invariant approach. We classify Lagrangians depending on the number of fields transforming as irreducible triplet representations of $Δ(27)$. For each case, we construct CP-odd weak basis invariants and use them to discuss the respective CP properties. We find that CP violation is sensitive to the number and type of $Δ(27)$ representations.

Invariant approach to CP in family symmetry models

We propose the use of basis invariants, valid for any choice of CP transformation, as a powerful approach to studying specific models of CP violation in the presence of discrete family symmetries. We illustrate the virtues of this approach for examples based on $A_4$ and $Δ(27)$ family symmetries. For $A_4$, we show how to elegantly obtain several known results in the literature. In $Δ(27)$ we use the invariant approach to identify how explicit (rather than spontaneous) CP violation arises, which is geometrical in nature, i.e. persisting for arbitrary couplings in the Lagrangian.

Towards a complete $A_4 \times SU(5)$ SUSY GUT

We propose a renormalisable model based on $A_4$ family symmetry with an $SU(5)$ grand unified theory (GUT) which leads to the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) with a two right-handed neutrino seesaw mechanism. Discrete $\mathbb{Z}_9\times \mathbb{Z}_6$ symmetry provides the fermion mass hierarchy in both the quark and lepton sectors, while $\mathbb{Z}_4^R$ symmetry is broken to $\mathbb{Z}_2^R$, identified as usual R-parity. Proton decay is highly suppressed by these symmetries. We discuss both the $A_4$ and $SU(5)$ symmetry breaking sectors, including doublet-triplet splitting, Higgs mixing and the origin of the $μ$ term. The model provides an excellent fit (better than one sigma) to all quark and lepton (including neutrino) masses and mixing with spontaneous CP violation. With the $A_4$ vacuum alignments, $(0,1,1)$ and $(1,3,1)$, the model predicts the entire PMNS mixing matrix with no free parameters, up to a relative phase, selected to be $2π/3$ from a choice of the nine complex roots of unity, providing a direct link between neutrino oscillations and leptogenesis.

Towards predictive flavour models in SUSY SU(5) GUTs with doublet-triplet splitting

We discuss how the double missing partner mechanism solution to the doublet-triplet splitting problem in four-dimensional supersymmetric SU(5) Grand Unified Theories (GUTs) can be combined with predictive models for the quark-lepton Yukawa coupling ratios at the GUT scale. It is argued that towards this goal a second SU(5) breaking Higgs field in the adjoint representation is very useful and we discuss all possible renormalizable superpotentials with two adjoint Higgs fields and calculate the constraints on the GUT scale and effective triplet mass from a two-loop gauge coupling unification analysis. Two explicit flavour models with different predictions for the GUT scale Yukawa sector are presented, including shaping symmetries and a renormalizable messenger sector. Towards calculating the rates for proton decay induced by the exchange of colour triplets, the required Clebsch-Gordan coefficients for their couplings are calculated for the possible dimension five and six operators. They are provided in detailed tables in the appendix, together with additional helpful material for GUT flavour model building.
