Lectures on flips and minimal models

This document contains notes from the lectures of Corti, Kollár, Lazarsfeld, and Mustaţă at the workshop ``Minimal and canonical models in algebraic geometry" at MSRI, Berkeley, April 2007. The lectures give an overview of the recent advances on canonical and minimal models of algebraic varieties obtained by Hacon--McKernan and Birkar--Cascini--Hacon--McKernan.

Non--quasi--projective moduli spaces

We show that every smooth toric variety (and many other algebraic spaces as well) can be realized as a moduli space for smooth, projective, polarized varieties. Some of these are not quasi--projective. This contradicts a recent paper (Quasi--projectivity of moduli spaces of polarized varieties, Ann. of Math. 159 (2004) 597--639.).

Resolution of Singularities -- Seattle Lecture

These are the notes for my lecture ``Resolution of Sigularities in Charcteristic 0" given at the AMS Summer Institute at Seattle. It gives a self contained proof of the strong Hironaka resolution theorem.

Quotients of Calabi-Yau varieties

Let $X$ be a complex Calabi-Yau variety, that is, a complex projective variety with canonical singularities whose canonical class is numerically trivial. Let $G$ be a finite group acting on $X$ and consider the quotient variety $X/G$. The aim of this paper is to determine the place of $X/G$ in the birational classification of varieties. That is, we determine the Kodaira dimension of $X/G$ and decide when it is uniruled or rationally connected. If $G$ acts without fixed points, then $κ(X/G)=κ(X)=0$; thus the interesting case is when $G$ has fixed points. We answer the above questions in terms of the action of the stabilizer subgroups near the fixed points. We give a rough classification of possible stabilizer groups which cause $X/G$ to have Kodaira dimension $-\infty$ or equivalently (as we show) to be uniruled. These stabilizers are closely related to unitary reflection groups.

Positive Sasakian structures on 5-manifolds

The aim of this paper is to study compact 5--manifolds which carry a positive Sasakian structure. Strong restrictions are derived for the integral homology groups. In some cases, all positive Sasakian structures are classified. A key step is to study log Del Pezzo surfaces whose boundary divisor contains positive genus curves.

Holonomy groups of stable vector bundles

We define the notion of holonomy group for a stable vector bundle F on a variety in terms of the Narasimhan--Seshadri unitary representation of its restriction to curves. Next we relate the holonomy group to the minimal structure group and to the decomposition of tensor powers of F. Finally we illustrate the principle that either the holonomy is large or there is a clear geometric reason why it should be small.

Kaehler-Einstein metrics on orbifolds and Einstein metrics on spheres

A construction of Kaehler-Einstein metrics using Galois coverings, studied by Arezzo-Ghigi-Pirola, is generalized to orbifolds. By applying it to certain orbifold covers of P^n which are trivial set theoretically, one obtains new Einstein metrics on odd-dimensional spheres. The method also gives Kaehler-Einstein metrics on degree 2 Del Pezzo surfaces with A_1 or A_2-singularities.

Circle actions on simply connected 5--manifolds

The aim of this paper is to study compact 5--manifolds which admit fixed point free circle actions. The first result implies that the torsion in the second homology and the second Stiefel--Whitney class have to satisfy strong restrictions. We then show that for simply connected 5--manifolds these restrictions are necessary and sufficient.

Einstein metrics on 5-dimensional Seifert bundles

The aim of this paper is to study Seifert bundle structures on simply connected 5--manifolds. We classify all such 5--manifolds which admit a Seifert bundle structure, and in a few cases all Seifert bundle structures are also classified. These results are then used to construct positive Ricci curvature Einstein metrics on these manifolds. The proof has 4 main steps. First, the study of the Leray spectral sequence of the Seifert bundle, based on work of Orlik--Wagreich. Second, the study of log Del Pezzo surfaces. Third, the construction of Kähler--Einstein metrics on Del Pezzo orbifolds using the algebraic existence criterion of Demailly--Kollár. Fourth, the lifting of the Kähler--Einstein metric on the base of a Seifert bundle to an Einstein metric on the total space using the Kobayashi--Boyer--Galicki method.

Einstein Metrics on Spheres

We prove the existence of an abundance of new Einstein metrics on odd dimensional spheres including exotic spheres, many of them depending on continuous parameters. The number of families as well as the number of parameter grows double exponentially with the dimension. Our method of proof uses Brieskorn-Pham singularities to realize spheres (and exotic spheres) as circle orbi-bundles over complex algebraic orbifolds, and lift a Kaehler-Einstein metric from the orbifold to a Sasakian-Einstein metric on the sphere.

Seifert $G_m$-bundles

A Seifert bundle over a variety X is a variety Y with a proper action of the multiplicative group such that the quotient is X. The topological version of this notion (using circle actions) was introduced by Seifert, the holomorphic version by Orlik and Wagreich. The aim of this paper is to provide the foundational results for Seifert bundles over an arbitrary normal variety X. The main results are a classification and a smoothness criterion.

Einstein metrics on connected sums of $S^2\times S^3$

The aim of this paper is to construct infinitely many families of Einstein metrics on the connected sums of arbitrary number of copies of $S^2\times S^3$. We realize these 5-manifolds as total spaces of Seifert bundles over Del Pezzo orbifolds. A Kähler--Einstein metric on the Del Pezzo orbifold is then lifted to an Einstein metric using the Kobayashi--Boyer--Galicki method.

Einstein Metrics on Exotic Spheres in Dimensions 7, 11, and 15

In a recent article the first three authors proved that in dimension $4m+1$ all homotopy spheres that bound parallelizable manifolds admit Einstein metrics of positive scalar curvature which, in fact, are Sasakian-Einstein. They also conjectured that all such homotopy spheres in dimension $4m-1, m\geq2$ admit Sasakian-Einstein metrics \cite{BGK}, and proved this for the simplest case, namely dimension $7.$ In this paper we describe computer programs that show that this conjecture is also true for 11-spheres and 15-spheres. Moreover, a program is given that determines the partition of the 8610 deformation classes of Sasakian-Einstein metrics into the 28 distinct oriented diffomorphism types in dimension $7.$

Conics in the Grothendieck ring

This note describes the subring of the Grothendieck ring of k-varieties generated by smooth conics; finding many zero divisors. The proof uses only elementary projective geometry.

The Nash problem on arc families of singularities

Nash proved that every irreducible component of the space of arcs through a singularity corresponds to an exceptional divisor that occurs on every resolution. He asked if the converse also holds: does every such exceptional divisor correspond to an arc family? We prove that the converse holds for toric singularities but fails in general.

Rationally connected varieties over finite fields

Let X be a geometrically rational (or more generally, separably rationally connected) variety over a finite field K. We prove that if K is large enough then X contains many rational curves defined over K. As a consequence we prove that R-equivalence is trivial on X if K is large enough. These imply that if Y is defined over a local field and it has good, separably rationally connected reduction then the Chow group of zero cycles is trivial for any residue field. R-equivalence is also trivial if the residue field is large enough.
